Stihl’s MS 250 Chainsaw Gives Homeowners A Reliable Wood-Cutting Solution

Heading into the winter months, some homeowners may rely on fireplaces to warm their homes, which means having a stockpile of firewood is a must. Plus, with cold weather often comes snow, as well as all of the cleanup to do once that snow starts to melt. Luckily, the Stihl MS 250 chainsaw has your winter worries covered. We’re taking a brief look to see why this tried-and-true chainsaw has stuck around throughout the years to help homeowners with various woodcutting tasks.

Stihl MS 250 Chainsaw Basics

Stihl MS 250 Chainsaw

Stihl starts with a 45.4 cc engine and uses it to drive a 3/8-inch RM3 chain around its 18-inch bar. If you prefer, it’s also rated to take a 16-inch bar.

According to Stihl, The MS 250 chainsaw was built and designed specifically for cutting firewood. Since the majority of firewood gets cut during the fall and winter, you don’t want to worry about cold weather preventing the engine from starting. Luckily, its winter/summer shutter allows the carburetor to remain at the optimum temperature for the season. It also helps prevent the carburetor from icing when working below 50°F by drawing air from around the cylinder to warm the carburetor.

Additionally, the side-access chain tensioner allows for better access to the saw chain with a bar wrench, as opposed to the typical guide bar adjustment screw location. Along with the easy-access air filter cover, this chainsaw definitely emphasizes easy maintenance.

Additional Features

  • Master control lever operates the choke, starting throttle lock, and power switch
  • Rear hand guard reduces the risk of injury, as well as provides a wide foot-placement area during starting

This chainsaw is also made in the U.S.A from American and foreign materials.

Stihl MS 250 Chainsaw: Why So Popular?

With its 16-inch or 18-inch bar and 10.1-pound powerhead dry weight, this saw is right in the wheelhouse for homeowners who have a larger property to maintain. With its 45.4cc gas engine, it’s not as powerful as the MS 271 Farm Boss that makes its living on farm and ranch properties, but it’s not as heavy and it’s $80 less.

Looking in the other direction, it’s a more capable saw than Stihl’s less expensive models and more feature-rich than the MS 271 Wood Boss.

At the end of the day, the MS 250 simply balances performance, weight, features, and price well for homeowners who want a solid all-around chainsaw for storm cleanup, property maintenance, and firewood cutting.

Stihl MS 250 Chainsaw Price

This chainsaw retails for $399.99 and you can find it at several local and online Stihl retailers. Stihl backs your purchase with a 1-year warranty.

DeWalt’s 60V Cut-Off Saw Gives You Versatile Cuts

For cutting concrete, tile, and metal, a cut-off saw gives you the variability and power you need. Only a few brands offer 9-inch handheld cut-off saws, so your options are kind of limited. However, the DeWalt 60V Cut-Off Saw DCS692 adds to the list to fill out that market gap. We’ll walk you through what this tool brings to the table and how it updates the brand’s previous model.

DeWalt 60V Max Cordless 9-Inch Cut-Off Saw: The Big Deal

DeWalt 60V Max Cordless 9-Inch Cut-Off Saw

There are a couple of differences between this cut-off saw and DeWalt’s previous iteration, the DCS690. For starters, this saw updates its battery box to accommodate DeWalt’s larger 15.0Ah (5.0Ah at 60V Max) batteries. You can latch and seal the battery box to protect the battery from harsh jobsite conditions.

Then there’s the Wireless Tool Control function, which lets you connect to and control a secondary tool remotely. Connecting this cut-off saw to a FlexVolt 60V Max Dust Extractor using Wireless Tool Control activates the extractor when you pull the saw’s trigger. When you release the trigger, the vacuum turns off automatically.

Same Performance

This tool’s 6600 no-load RPM allows for fast single-pass cuts and scores in hard materials like concrete, stone, and rebar. Its 9-inch wheel has a cut capacity of up to 3 1/4 inches deep.

Like the last model, this cut-off saw features a 5-position blade guard which lets you choose the ideal cutting angle for visibility and mobility in confined spaces. Additionally, you can perform both horizontal and vertical cuts comfortably with the adjustable, 3-position handle.

Additional Features

  • Heavy-load indicator light
  • OSHA Table 1 compliant for dust management with dual-sided water feed system
  • 2-stage trigger switch helps prevent accidental activation
  • Tool Connect Tag-ready

DeWalt 60V Max Cordless 9-Inch Cut-Off Saw Price

You can find the DCS692 cut-off saw as a bare tool for $629. If you need batteries to go along with it, there’s also a kit that includes two FlexVolt 15.0Ah batteries for $949. That kit option is pretty attractive considering those batteries run $249 each when they’re on sale.

DeWalt backs your purchase with a 3-year warranty and a 1-year free service contract.

Ryobi Has A Snow Shovel For Every Application On A Battery System That Helps You All Year

If you live in a climate that gets snow in the winter, you know the “joys” of having to shovel snow manually. With Ryobi’s impressive range of homeowner tools, it’s no surprise that it’s tapped into the winter cleanup market. We’ve covered Ryobi’s 40V Snow Blowers in the past, but you may be looking for something for lighter snow-clearing jobs. That’s where Ryobi cordless snow shovels come in. We’re giving you an overview of each model to help you sort out the options.

Ryobi 40V 12-Inch Wheeled Snow Shovel (RY408130VNM): The High-Performance Specialist

Ryobi Cordless Snow Shovel Ultimate Buyer's Guide

The RY408130VNM Ryobi snow shovel gives you a 12-inch clearing path in snow up to 6 inches deep. It has a throwing distance of 25 feet to tackle areas you don’t want a full-size snow blower for. There’s also a 2-speed trigger that lets you customize the speed based on your clearing needs.

As a compact, lightweight shovel, this 40V Ryobi snow shovel gives you a break from manual shovels and scrapers. It weighs just 16.6 pounds and features a 2-wheel design that reduces fatigue even further and makes maneuverability much easier.

This one retails for $249 as a bare tool. There’s also a kit, including a 4.0Ah battery and charger for $329. Ryobi backs your purchase with a 5-year warranty for the tool and a 3-year warranty for the battery.

Considerations

This is the highest-performing snow shovel in Ryobi’s lineup and the wheels are very helpful in offsetting the tool’s higher weight. With its 4.0Ah battery, you’re going to get longer runtime than 18V options.

High performance always comes at a higher price, and as the flagship of Ryobi’s line, it’s also the most expensive.

  • Model: Ryobi RY408130VNM
  • Clearing Width: 12 in
  • Clearing Depth: 6 inches
  • Max Throw: 25 ft
  • Weight: 16.6 lbs

Ryobi 18V One+ Snow Shovel (P2706BTL): The Lightweight Option

Ryobi Cordless Snow Shovel Ultimate Buyer's Guide

The smallest of the Ryobi cordless snow shovel lineup, the P2706BTL has a 10-inch clearing width. It keeps the same clearing depth of up to 6 inches, however. This shovel is also the lightest in the lineup at 12.3 pounds, making it a good option if strength or back pain is a concern.

Even though this tool isn’t as mighty in terms of size and performance as the rest of the ones on this list, you’re not sacrificing much in the way of snow-throwing distance. It throws snow up to 20 feet away, which is only five feet less than Ryobi’s top models achieve.

This is a more compact solution than Ryobi’s other snow shovel options and the price reflects that. It retails as a bare tool for $139. There’s also a kit option that includes a 4.0Ah battery and charger for $199. You can find both options at The Home Depot starting in November 2022. Ryobi backs your purchase with a 3-year limited warranty.

Considerations

The 18V system is the same one that runs the entire 18V One+ line of power tools, OPE, and lifestyle products. In terms of the number of compatible tools, none of the 40V models come close. It’s also lighter and less expensive than the higher-voltage models.

The big trade-offs are going to be a slightly narrower clearing width, shorter throw distance, and significantly lower runtime thanks to the lower-capacity battery.

  • Model: Ryobi P2706BTL
  • Clearing Width: 10 in
  • Clearing Depth: 6 inches
  • Max Throw: 20 ft
  • Weight: 12.3 lbs

Ryobi 40V HP Brushless 12-Inch Snow Shovel (RY408120VNM): Brushless Attachment-Capable Snow Clearing

Ryobi Cordless Snow Shovel Ultimate Buyer's Guide

The Ryobi RY408120VNM gives you the ability to clear a 12-inch path in snow up to 6 inches deep. Like its bigger brother, it features a brushless motor that throws snow up to 25 feet.

This Ryobi snow shovel has a 2-speed switch, as well as a variable speed trigger. Unlike the wheeled model, it’s compatible with Ryobi’s Expand-It tool attachment system, featuring a 180° lock/unlock coupler that lets you remove the snow shovel head to attach another one of the tool heads in this system.

This shovel clocks in at 17 pounds, and although it’s tied for the heaviest model in Ryobi’s snow shovel lineup, it’s still a lot lighter than a walk-behind snow blower.

As far as pricing goes, you can find it as a kit retailing for $299. It includes a 4.0Ah battery and a charger. As with all Ryobi tools, you can find it exclusively at The Home Depot. Ryobi backs your purchase with a 5-year warranty.

Considerations

This model was Ryobi’s previous flagship until the wheeled design came out. Arguably, it still is with performance that matches its brother in capacity and throw. It also enjoys the longer runtime of a higher-capacity battery and brushless motor.

It’s a little heavier and doesn’t enjoy the easy maneuverability that wheels offer, though it is a little lower in price.

This model’s biggest advantage is its attachment-ready powerhead, making it a useful tool to have year-round.

  • Model: Ryobi RY408120VNM
  • Clearing Width: 12 inches
  • Clearing Depth: 6 inches
  • Max Throw: 25 feet
  • Weight: 17 lbs

Ryobi 40V 12-Inch Power Snow Shovel (RY408110VNM): Brushed Attachment-Capable Option

This snow shovel is very similar to the RY408120VNM model, but this one uses a brushed motor. Taking off that HP Brushless designation, you lose about three feet of maximum throwing distance (up to 22 feet). It has the same clearing path of 12 inches in up to 6 inches deep of snow, though.

It’s also lacking a two-speed switch, making it a little lighter on features as it targets a lower price point. Besides that, this model is almost identical to the HP Brushless shovel. It has the same weight of 17 pounds, and it features a variable speed trigger. It also features Expand-It compatibility with a 180° lock/unlock coupler.

The RY408120VNM 40V 12-inch snow shovel retails as a kit for $269. It includes a 4.0Ah battery and a charger, as well as a 5-year warranty from Ryobi. You can find it at The Home Depot.

Considerations

As we already mentioned, the big difference between this model and the one above it is the switch to a brushed motor. You won’t get as much runtime and the throw is a little shorter, but you save some money and the powerhead is still attachment capable.

  • Model: Ryobi RY408110VNM
  • Clearing Width: 12 inches
  • Clearing Depth: 6 inches
  • Runtime: 15 mins
  • Weight: 17 lbs

Ryobi Expand-It Snow Shovel Attachment

If you already have a Ryobi Expand-It powerhead, you can save some money by simply adding the attachment. It’s the same one as the two options above with a 12-inch clearing width and 6-inch maximum depth. Since the Expand-It system uses a universal connection design, you can also use it with other brands that have the same connection type, whether it’s a battery or gas unit.

Get it for $149.00

HART’s 4V Screwdriver Helps With Household Driving Tasks

Driving screws with a manual screwdriver can get old fast. This goes double for people with wrist or hand mobility issues, where repetitive motions can cause discomfort. A drill could work instead, but they’re often bulky and can be too powerful and fast for small household driving tasks. The HART 4V Cordless Screwdriver serves as an inviting middle ground and we got it in our hands to take a closer look.

Using HART 4V Cordless Screwdriver

HART 4V Cordless Screwdriver Review

Being almost like the baby brother of the cordless drill, the concept of a cordless screwdriver isn’t new. Many of the ones we see on the market feature a straight, inline design but HART’s HFSD02 is reminiscent of a mini-drill (or the Noisy Cricket from Men in Black if you ask Josh McGaffigan). Either way, it’s small and the design is 40% more compact than the previous HSFD01 cordless screwdriver model.

HART 4V Cordless Screwdriver Review

The tool’s motor produces up to 250 RPM, which is 50 RPM more than the previous model. It features two buttons that form the trigger— forward and reverse— making the design simple, yet effective for tightening and loosening small fasteners.

The trigger isn’t variable speed like a drill, but the RPMs are low enough that you still have plenty of control. Plus, the torque is low enough that there’s little risk of damaging the material you’re working with by overdriving.

Trigger

The motor uses an internal 4V battery that recharges via USB cable. With the battery fully down, it takes 2 hours to recharge.

The screwdriver includes a #2 Phillips and a slotted bit. There’s onboard bit storage for a spare, so while you’re using one bit, you can nestle the other in the storage slot on top of the tool. The tool accepts any 1/4-inch hex shank bit. Stick with 2-inch long bits at a minimum for the easiest screwdriving. However, you can use a 1-inch bit if you need to work in a really tight spot.

Bit Holder

Additionally, If you’re working in a low-light area, the integrated LED turns on automatically when you press the trigger.

Additional Features

  • Rubberized grip
  • Integrated lanyard loop for easy hanging storage

HART 4V Cordless Screwdriver Price

This tool retails for $24.88, including the two bits and a 4V charging cord. Like all HART tools, you can find it exclusively at Walmart. HART backs your purchase with a 3-year warranty.

The Bottom Line

HART’s 4V cordless screwdriver is a super-handy tool to have in your home. Its pistol-grip design is more comfortable than inline versions and being able to drive in forward or reverse without having to flip a switch is convenient. For less than $25, it’s a tool every household should have.

DeWalt Impact Connect Makes Cutting Pipe Faster And Easier

For plumbers, HVAC techs, and anyone else who works with piping, it can be a struggle to find a cutting tool that balances speed and convenience. Cordless Pro-grade pipe cutters can be pricey and manual solutions take up time and energy. DeWalt aims to fill this gap with the Impact Connect Pipe Cutter. We dove deeper to see what this attachment brings to the table.

DeWalt Impact Connect Pipe Cutter Attachment: The Big Deal

DeWalt Impact Connect Pipe Cutter Attachment

Instead of releasing a dedicated cordless pipe cutter, DeWalt designed the system to attach to your existing impact driver. It leverages the power and rotational impact of your tool to cut pipe faster than manual methods to limit fatigue on the job.

There are two versions. The DeWalt Impact Connect PVC/PEX Pipe Cutter Attachment (DWAPVCIR) cuts material up to 2 inches in diameter. It makes clean, efficient cuts in PEX, PVC (up to Schedule 80), and other plastic piping or conduit. In terms of speed, it’s up to 6 times faster than manual cutting.

The second version is the Copper Pipe Cutting Attachment (DWACPIR) and comes with a 1/2-inch and a 3/4-inch cutting wheel. There’s also a 1-inch cutting wheel you can purchase separately. It’s rated for use with type K, L, and M copper pipes.

Additional Features

Both use a Quick-Change brace that allows you to switch between cutting and driving applications in seconds. Weighing a little over 3 1/2 pounds, it adds some heft to the end of your impact driver, but attaches to the base of the tool and helps support the weight.

As for maneuverability, the attachment has 360° rotation to help work around awkward angles and has a large hook window.

If you happen to own another brand’s impact driver, don’t worry. It works with DeWalt 20V Max impact drivers as well as Pro-grade impact drivers from other brands.

DeWalt Impact Connect Pipe Cutter Attachment Price

Both versions retail for $119 as an attachment only. Currently, there are no kit options available. DeWalt backs your purchase with a 3-year warranty.

Editor’s Note

Converting your impact driver into a pipe cutter is a really big deal, and not just for plumbers. Electricians. Irrigation specialists, HVAC techs, refrigeration techs, and many others can take advantage of Impact Connect.

Don’t miss the value proposition, though. With cordless solutions from brands such as Milwaukee running well over $200, DeWalt’s price tag makes it an awfully attractive way to relegate your manual cutters to the backup squad. It’s also no surprise that it’s a 2022 Pro Tool Innovation Award Winner.

Stihl Zero-Turn Lawn Mower Options Launch With Focuses On Pro And Homeowner Markets

Stihl joins forces with Briggs & Stratton for a line of zero-turn lawn mower models to add to their outdoor power equipment arsenal. The collaboration between these two companies aims to expand product offerings across the country. This mower lineup will even be made in the USA using global materials, bringing more jobs and opportunities to U.S.-based manufacturers.

Stihl makes some of the best chainsaws and other handheld equipment and manufactures a ton of products for lawn care and landscaping. With the introduction of zero-turn mowers to the company’s roster, Stihl will have what we consider to be one of the most robust ranges of outdoor power equipment in America.

Made in the USA

These mowers will be manufactured in the USA to keep them consistent with Stihl’s production and quality standards. Stihl is understandably enthusiastic about working with Briggs & Stratton and its long history in the lawncare/landscape industry.

“The introduction of zero-turn mowers allows our network of authorized local STIHL Dealers to offer an even greater breadth of product solutions for our customers who turn to STIHL for world class products and support to meet their garden and landscape needs.

“Working with Briggs & Stratton, a well-established leader in this product category, allows us to bring a superior product to market for both demanding professionals and discerning homeowners.”

Terry Horan, Stihl CEO and President

“We take great pride that STIHL has seen in Briggs & Stratton what we have known for years… We design, engineer and manufacture the best zero-turn mowers on the market.

“With a 114-year legacy of power application and manufacturing expertise, Briggs & Stratton is a trusted leader in this industry… We look forward to applying our superior product and manufacturing capabilities to produce STIHL zero-turn mowers.”

Steve Andrews, Briggs & Stratton CEO and President

Bracketing the Market

Stihl zero-turn mowers are launching with 5 separate lines and a total of 19 individual models on the Briggs & Stratton system. These include a variety of engine options from Kawasaki, Vanguard, and Briggs & Stratton, as well as a suite of accessories.

Stihl is also including models for every ZT mowing application— from Pro-grade reliability to farming and ranching models, and even down to homeowner-targeted machines.

Stihl Zero Turn Lawn Mower: 700 and 900 Series

Stihl Zero Turn Lawn Mower: 700 and 900 Series

Beginning with the more high-end, professional-grade lineup, the Stihl 700-series and 900-series ZTs cover the meat of the lineup with a total of 12 models.

Deck widths range from 52 to 72 inches. While lines from other brands often include 48-inch options for their ZTs, it looks like Stihl is leaving that one out for now. Perhaps we’ll see a stand-on range in the future that covers the smaller deck widths.

There are a variety of high-performance engine options, including Vanguard or Kawasaki EFI engines, or a Kawasaki carbureted engine.

Both series mowers have four-wheel suspension with mowing deck height compensation. Additionally, they feature independent front suspension with upper and lower control arms reminiscent of the ISX mower series from Ferris (a Briggs & Stratton brand). This system uses four steel control rods and a coil-over shock suspension. In our experience, you get a smooth ride from mowers that use this system.

The Hydro-Gear ZT transaxles give you a top speed of 12 mph in the 900-series and 10 mph in the 700-series. Both go up to 5 mph in reverse.

With the 700-series, you get a deluxe seat with armrests. The 900-series takes it a step up, giving you a premium suspension seat with armrests and an adjustable backrest.

Additional Features and Specifications

  • Heavy-duty 8-inch and 10-inch cast iron, greaseable mower deck spindles
  • Efficient, cool-running two-belt mower drive system enables a longer lifespan and less maintenance

Ryobi Adds Long-Anticipated Cordless Framing Nailer To 18V Lineup

Ryobi has a tool solution for pretty much any application you can think of, but there actually are a few gaps. The Ryobi 18V One+ HP Brushless Framing Nailer fills one of the big ones that fans have been asking for. It enters the ring with two separate models and we wanted to know how they compare to other nailing solutions.

Ryobi 18V One+ HP Brushless Framing Nailer: The Big Deal

These two models mark Ryobi’s first venture into the cordless framing nailer world. They include a 21° full head nailer and a 30° full and clipped head nailer. The nailers’ brushless motors allow the driving power to sink nails from 2 inches to 3 1/2 inches in length and claim the power to drive flush in hardwoods.

Thanks to Ryobi’s Airstrike Technology, these cordless framing nailers don’t require wrangling around air hoses or consumable gas cartridges. Instead, this technology utilizes an internal piston to compress enough air to each nail you’re driving with just an 18V lithium-ion battery.

A couple of things stand out in the design. One is that there is a field-serviceable air-fill valve on the tool. Unlike some designs that require you to take the nailer into the service center for filling, you can do it yourself when you notice you’re not getting the driving depth you’re used to.

The other element is a shock absorber for the battery. We first saw this kind of feature on high-vibration tools, such as Milwaukee’s monster M18 Fuel 1-inch impact wrench, but it’s not so common on nailers. Still, vibration can significantly reduce the life of your battery, so its inclusion gets two thumbs up from us.

Additional Features

  • Tool-free drive depth adjustment
  • Single and bump fire modes with a selection switch (no trigger changes required)
  • Integrated rafter hook for easy on-the-job storage
  • 21° capacity: 33 nails
  • 30° capacity: 60 nails
  • Drives up to 750 nails with a 4.0Ah High Performance battery

Ryobi 18V One+ HP Brushless Framing Nailer Price

Both nailer models have a retail price of $329 for the bare tool. Kit options are also on the way. You can find them exclusively at The Home Depot starting in 2023. Ryobi backs your purchase with a 3-year warranty.

Ryobi 80V Battery Platform Adds A 30-Inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

At the Equip Expo (formerly GIE) in Louisville, Kentucky, we got to see a huge variety of the latest OPE from some big-name brands. Among them was Ryobi, which showed off the newest addition to its 80V lawncare lineup. The Ryobi 80V 30-Inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower ushers in some major upgrades to the brand’s walk-behind roster.

Ryobi 80V Self-Propelled Lawn Mower: The Big Deal

This mower is Ryobi’s first 80V walk-behind model. Until now, the 80V system consisted of three ride-on mowers. Adding a 30-inch walk-behind mower supplements those tools with a more nimble tool that continues to use the same batteries.

Ryobi 80V Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Battery

A 10Ah 80V suitcase-style battery provides a higher capacity (720Wh) than you can get from the 40V slide packs Ryobi employs on its other mowers. In fact, you can expect up to 90 minutes of runtime on a full charge. That gives you 20 additional minutes over their next highest-capacity model, the Whisper Series 21-inch CrossCut mower.

Ryobi’s suitcase-style 80V battery

Blade Design And Cutting Width

Ryobi designed this mower to deliver aggressive cutting thanks to its multiple cross-cut blades. It features four blades—dual sets of two stacked blades that overlap slightly. Essentially, you get a pair of smaller CrossCut stacked blades. The side-by-side stacked design allows for better cut quality over using a single, higher-mass blade.

Another really big deal is that it gives this mower a 30-inch total cut width. This is a huge cut capacity for an electric walk-behind mower. In fact, the only other battery-powered walk-behind mower that we know of at the time of writing is the Greenworks Commercial 82V 30″ push mower which was also announced at Equip Expo this year.

Mulching and Bagging

Regardless of whether you plan to mulch or bag, Ryobi makes it easy. To choose or switch between modes, simply twist the lever on the top of the deck and a door moves to open up or block the pathway to the rear bagger. In this way, you avoid the complications of having to deal with (and potentially misplace) a removable mulch plug.

Cutting High Adjustment and Storage

Using a single-lever cutting height adjustment system, Ryobi makes it easy to lift or lower the blades. It simplifies the required adjustment to get that perfect cutting height. The dual locking side rails also make this a stable setting, providing a nice even cut without requiring a separate lever on each wheel.

When you finish mowing, the Ryobi 80V self-propelled lawn mower’s handle folds down completely for compact storage. To engage this feature, simply pull up on the handle release lever and push the handle down to the mower body.

Additional Features

  • Single-point height adjustment
  • Integrated mulch plug—just flip a lever!

Ryobi 80V Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Price

This lawn mower will include an 80V 10Ah battery and an 80V Super Charger. While there isn’t any pricing information publically available yet, we’ll know more leading up to its 2023 release. Like all Ryobi products, it will be available exclusively at The Home Depot.

This lawn mower will be manufactured at Ryobi’s Anderson, SC facility, making it the first 80V product to be made in the USA with global materials.

Final Thoughts

Ryobi is moving into an interesting position with its 80V line. On one hand, homeowners with 1/2-acre to 1 acre lawns may find a 30-inch walk-behind more affordable and/or advantageous than a ride-on mower. On the other hand, most professional crews have a walk-behind to get into areas such as fenced-in lawn that their large riders won’t fit. In classic Ryobi style, the team is carving out a Prosumer category between the residential and commercial lawn care sectors. Don’t be surprised if you start seeing Ryobi battery-powered equipment tempt value-minded Pros as they transition from gas to battery power.

Stihl Gives Homeowners A Value Option With The 16-Inch MS 170 Chainsaw

Stihl has an outstanding chainsaw reputation among professional users, but homeowners typically don’t need that level of performance. They also tend to go for saws that are lighter and more compact. Can a Pro-focused brand like Stihl dial it back for the needs of homeowners while maintaining a reputation for quality? We took a closer look at the Stihl MS 170 16-inch chainsaw to find out.

Check out our picks for the best Stihl chainsaws here!

Stihl MS 170 Chainsaw: The Big Deal

This gas-powered Stihl chainsaw features a 16-inch bar length and is compatible with 12 or 14-inch bars as well. With the homeowner market as its target demographic, Stihl designed it to be more compact and lightweight than a lot of Pro-level chainsaws. In fact, its powerhead weight stands at just 8.6 pounds.

It’s no slouch in the performance department, though. Stihl uses a 30.1cc engine that produces 1.7 brake horsepower.

Ideal applications include trimming or cutting small trees, fallen limbs, and other tasks around the yard. It’s excellent for occasional property maintenance and storm cleanup. Stihl recommends a 17-inch maximum diameter.

Additional Features

The MS 170 employs includes an IntelliCarb compensating carburetor, which automatically adjusts the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes clogged or restricted, maintaining the engine’s correct RPM without pulling in dirty air to deal with it.

Additionally, Stihl’s anti-vibration system helps reduce operator fatigue and gives you a more comfortable working experience.

When you combine the Ematic guide bar with Stihl’s Oilomatic saw chain (both come with the saw), you’ll get the proper lubrication with up to 50% less oil consumption than other designs. The magic is in ramps on the bar rail. They contain the oil flow while getting it onto the parts that require it.

One area where you see a departure from professional models is in fuel and oil capacity. With an 8.5-ounce fuel tank and 4.9-ounce oil reservoir, you’re going to fill up more frequently than with other models.

Stihl MS 170 Chainsaw Price

This chainsaw retails for $199.99. That’s more than you might pay for budget brands at big box stores, but you get a higher-quality saw plus the backing of your local dealer for the price. Stihl backs your purchase with a 1-year warranty.

The Bottom Line

In its stock 16-inch bare configuration, the Stihl MS 170 has the performance and size to meet the needs of homeowners without being overly intimidating. Combined with features inspired by Stihl’s line of professional-grade models and being made in America with global materials, it’s no wonder the MS 170 is one of the top-selling homeowner chainsaws in the market.

  • Bar length: 16 in
  • Oilomatic chain: 3/8 in

Home Depot Path To Pro Network Connects Tradesmen With Employers

Hiring a tradesperson requires research, whether you’re seeking a one-time home improvement contractor or a permanent member of your team. You have to know their rate of pay, the skills they’re proficient in, and their level of training. Home Depot has cornered the jobseeking market for skilled tradespeople with the Path to Pro Network.

Home Depot Path To Pro Network: The Big Deal

Morning Consult and The Home Depot conducted a survey and 50% of trades professionals said that determining whether an applicant is qualified for a job is an obstacle to hiring. With the Path to Pro Network, skilled job seekers can create a professional profile where they can upload their resumé and add photos of their work. Home Depot Pro customers can also view tradespeople’s profiles and connect with them locally.

The Path to Pro Network features skill badges to display on your profile, including accredited training and U.S. Veteran status. This lets potential employers find the right tradesman for the job.

Professional profiles also show if a candidate has graduated from The Home Depot’s free trades training program, the Path to Pro Skills program. The Home Depot launched this program in 2021 to offer free training for people interested in a career in the skilled trades. The Path to Pro Network adds another feature to help address the skilled labor shortage and connect employers with tradesmen.

Eric Schelling, vice president of global talent acquisition for The Home Depot, says:

“There is not a leading jobseeker platform for the skilled trades and The Home Depot is committed to connecting skilled tradespeople with our Pro customers for jobs. The Path to Pro Network was designed to provide jobseekers with new career networking opportunities in the trades. Building a profile in the Path to Pro Network is the best way to showcase to potential employers that you have what it takes to work in the skilled trades.”

Skilled trades jobseekers can visit PathToPro.com to create a professional profile, as well as find out more about the program.

Editor’s Note

Hiring employees in today’s day and age is difficult, even with the technology that’s available. There are options for white collar jobs, but trying to find and vet potential candidates for jobs in the trades presents an even greater challenge. We applaud Home Depot’s efforts to help trade businesses find qualified labor. After all, with some 500,000 employees across North America, they certainly know a thing or two about hiring.
