I am in the roofing business for 50 years and I deal with the Texas Department of Insurance guidelines for Texas Windstorm Compliance and Certification of roofs and construction in Texas. In addition, I’m a retired Property and Casualty Adjuster. In our area we comply with the IRC 2006. Here is a video I found on youtube produced by GAF Roofing. Quite interesting. I like your post.

Regardless of whether the nails or the asphalt strip hold down the shingles—it’s still code here in “hurricane country”. Also, lab testing has shown that 6 nails delays catastrophic damage under actual wind load testing.

The nails just keeps the shingles from sliding down the roof. The real power house is the asphalt strip. Once the asphalt strip breaks, the shingles are going to fly with four or six nails.

In Eugene, Oregon, though, a four staple pattern using Senco PWs is still being done. Also, some guys are still installing for ten bucks a square there.
