Use a generous amount of oil daily or every other day of use. Spray your canister and the advancing mechanism with WD-40 every morning before you load it so that the coils don’t stick.
Make sure you have a compressor that can run your gun. Without enough air, you are better off to break out your roofing hammer and start hand nailing. You should have a nice, thick main hose that leads into a lightweight lead hose. If you are shooting thousands of nails every day, you don’t need the drag of a heavy main line plugged into your nailer.
Stand up as much as possible, using your left hand to grab and position your shingle. Unless you are installing three tab, don’t bother to gauge. Line your shingle up with with laminate line of the shingle below, eliminating a step. Take your gauge off and throw it away in order to further lighten the resitance on your arm.
Find the rhythm that works for the number of fasteners you are installing. Try to get an uninterrupted series of shots with no stutter. A seasoned pro can fire off six nails so quickly that individual shots are often indistinguishable. Don’t use too much force when nailing, and your shoulder will thank you in fifteen years.
Always have a full load of nails in your pouch before you start, and a full coil in your gun. Never go to work without a tool belt, and always have a hook blade knife and a hammer, at the very least. A true pro will have a pry bar jammed in the a slot on his pouch where the belt slides through.
I know guys who slam down twelve squares a day, including felt, all while loading for themselves, day in and day out.
