The Bosch 18V Flexiclick Drill/Driver (the Chameleon) presents a big dilemma for those Pros that are heavily invested in or partial to a different platform. With the recent addition of the SDS-Plus attachment, the Bosch GSR18V-535FCB15 doesn’t just excel at cabinetry, casework, and all other tight-spot drilling and driving, but also at light masonry tasks, too. Here’s a closer look.

Pros

  • Lots of power with 535 inch-pounds of torque
  • Attachments make it the most versatile drill/driver available
  • Runtime benefits of Bosch’s CORE18V battery
  • Kickback control for user safety
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • SDS-Plus attachment (sold separately) completes the suite for light masonry tasks

Cons

  • No significant downsides

Recommendation

You won’t find a more versatile drill/driver, especially with as much power, as the Flexiclick. The locking bit holder and 1/2-inch metal chuck do just fine but its the right angle and offset attachments that really steal the show. With them, the Bosch 18V Flexiclick can perform tasks in spaces where even a 12V drill would fail. Pick up the (sold separately) SDS-Plus attachment to add light masonry tasks to all the cabinetry and casework at which the Flexiclick excels and you’ll be a happy carpenter.

Bosch 18V Flexiclick Drill/Driver with SDS-Plus Attachments

Overview

The standard Bosch 18V Flexiclick Drill/Driver kit (GSR18V-535FCB15) boasts four ways to drill or drive with its 1/4-inch hex bit holder (on the bare tool). It also includes three attachments.

As you might expect from Bosch, the attachment points use a heavy-duty metal design that creates a tight fit. Fit the attachment to the drill and with a slight turn, they’ll stay until you remove them. Also, the Bosch 18V Chameleon FlexiClick puts out 535 in-lbs of torque. That puts it in the compact 18V class and gives this tool enough power for its varied drill+driver duties.

Right Angle Drill Attachment

Bosch Flexiclick 18V right angle drill attachment

The right angle drill attachment locks into any of 16 different positions to get the angle of attack you need. We used it to drill out recessed screw holes in cabinetry. The right angle drill head let us position the tool perfectly square to the attachment point for our hinge. It gave us more room to apply the proper amount of guidance and pressure to the tool. Given the space requirements, even a smaller 12V drill would have been unable to fit the space.

We did notice another change from the smaller 12V version. You can no longer put other attachments on top of the right angle head. Bosch made the 18V Flexiclick “nonstackable”.

Bosch 18V Flexiclick right angle attachment

Offset Angle Driver Bit Attachment

Like the right angle drill attachment, you get the same 16-point rotation to help you get exactly the position needed to drive a fastener. Most will use the extreme left, right, or top positions to extend the bit to its furthest possible point. Still, options help—and you never know where you may need to place the tool to reach a stubborn fastener.

Bosch Flexiclick offset angle head

For us, the right angle and offset attachments really make the Bosch 18V Flexiclick Drill/Driver shine. For cabinetry, casework, between studs, up against a wall/ceiling/floor—these two attachments solve the headaches of real-world drilling and driving. It’s an elegant solution to have them combined in the Flexiclick.

Keyless Chuck Attachment

The metal keyless chuck attachment turns the Bosch 18V chameleon driver into a standard two-speed drill.

Bosch 18V Flexiclick SDS-Plus Attachment

The Bosch 18V Flexiclick SDS-Plus attachment for light masonry is the newest option. It’s sold separately as an option. After seeing its performance, we highly recommend it if you need to drill masonry.

More Access Than a 12V

Quite often a custom cabinetry job requires a 9- or 12-inch box when the room won’t accommodate a full-sized one. This happened with a recent job. Here’s where the Bosch Flexiclick Drill/Driver strutted its stuff. We wanted this narrower cabinet to draw tight against its neighbor. We also needed to hit the stud behind it.

By pre-drilling the back from behind, we can then used the offset attachment to drive a screw square to the back of the cabinet from inside. With a standard driver, the screw head would inevitably stick out slightly because of the angle. However, using the right angle attachment, we could both drill and drive the screws needed to secure the cabinet to its neighbor.

With these attachments, this powerful 18V drill effectively worked better than a smaller 12V drill!

Other Great Features

Drilling into Masonry with SDS-Plus Attachment and Bits

The SDS-Plus attachment is just icing on the Bosch Flexiclick Drill/Driver cake. We no longer need an additional tool if we want to secure our cabinetry to a masonry wall. Of course, the utility of the attachment is much greater than that.

Reviewer’s note: put the Bosch Flexiclick Drill/Driver in speed 2 for best results with the SDS-Plus attachment.

Compatible with Bosch Dust Collection

When you work with concrete and masonry, you tend to encounter dust. The Bosch Chameleon also works with the HDC200 dust collection hood for OSHA-approved silica dust control on the job site.

GSR18V-535FC Bosch Chameleon 18V FlexiClick

Bosch 18V Flexiclick Kickback Control

The Bosch 18V FlexiClick integrates Kickback Control into the system. It’s a sensor that stops the motor if it senses a bind up to reduce the chances you’ll wrench your wrist or elbow.

Bosch GCY42 Connectivity Module

You can also add a Bosch GCY42 Connectivity Module to the drill. After downloading the Bosch Toolbox App, you will have access to getting tool feedback and customizing your settings. There’s no word yet how much control you’ll have over the tool, but Bosch seems to keep expanding functionality in this area. Learn more about that here.

Quick Note on Working at Height

‘From our experience, we did notice one small potential issue when using the Flexiclick on a ladder. It might not even apply to your work, but it does if you work at height. Normally, we may have two or even three drill/drivers slung on our belt with different attachments. While holding the ladder with one hand, we can grab another tool. You can’t really do this with the Bosch Flexiclick drill/driver. You need two hands to change attachments. That means letting go of the ladder—which is, of course, unsafe.

Aside from this, the Flexiclick with the new SDS-Plus attachment is brilliant through and through!

Price

It’s difficult to make comparisons with the competition for a league-of-its-own tool like the Bosch Flexiclick Drill/Driver (model GSR18V-535FCB15). You can pick it up without the $99 SDS-Plus attachment (model GFA18-H) for $299.

The only direct competition for the Bosch 18V FlexiClick is its 12V compact brother ($199) and Festool’s PDC 18/4 or T 18+3. Both Festool sets will set you back $660 to get a kit with two batteries and the full range of attachments.

For its quality and capabilities, we think Bosch priced this tool right in the sweet spot.

The Bottom Line

The Bosch Chameleon Flexiclick Drill/Driver offers a convenient, money- and space-saving tool combination. Even better, it succeeds in tight places and tough angles where other drills and driver systems will fail. For cabinetry, casework, framing—and now light masonry with the new SDS-Plus attachment—you’ll be able to do better work with it at a lower cost than assembling dedicated tools. We find that hard to beat.

We think of the Ridgid Octane JobMax Multi-Tool like this: Buy it for the oscillating tool. Then, benefit from the whole 7-tool suite if you decide to purchase the other heads separately. Having already played with the Ridgid 18V JobMax multi-tool, the Octane “big brother” oscillating tool and sander came in handy on the job site. In fact, it has come in handy enough times to pay for itself several times over.

Pros

  • Performs seven different functions using interchangeable heads (sold separately): sander, jigsaw, oscillating tool, reciprocating saw, metal shears, right angle drill, and right angle impact
  • Handy for cutting drywall, trim, and anything involving plunge cuts
  • Each head can be rotated in four positions around the power base
  • Lots of power and runtime from the Octane battery system

Cons

  • Spring-loaded lever provides tool-free blade changes but can snap back on your hand painfully if you’re not careful
  • It’s hard to press the buttons to remove the head
  • The work light doesn’t rotate with the head

Ridgid Octane JobMax Performance

Back and Forth

Like the impact driver, the oscillating tool is in the What did we do before we had them? category. Our crew uses them for flooring, finish work, rough-ins, general carpentry—you name it. After our first experience with the impressive Octane Megamax, the Ridgid Octane JobMax Multi-Tool sounded like a fine idea to us.

Ridgid Octane 18V JobMax cutting

It turns out we were right. When you take an eminently useful tool and boost the power and runtime, you get something special. It can certainly out-cut any of its peers—at least any we’ve used. Plunge cuts, flush cuts, on-the-fly mortises, trim work, making holes in drywall—we always take the JobMax along. It seems like there’s always something it can do better than another tool. We’re not sure if it’s the best oscillating multi-tool on the market, but it has plenty of power.

Heads on a Swivel

As is usually the case, we couldn’t resist playing with the Ridgid Octane JobMax Multi-Tool as soon as we got it to the shop. You know, before it did any “real” work. We cut some quick field mortises and used the sanding head to ease some edges.

Ridgid Octane JobMax plunge cut

Of course, those are just two of the JobMax’s seven functions. For around $50 each, you can also pick up a jigsaw, recip saw, metal sheers, right angle drill, and right angle impact. We don’t have those yet (do we smell a future review update?) but all indications are that they work well.

Ridgid JobMax Octane connect

All is not perfect with the Ridgid Octane JobMax Multi-Tool, though. The buttons that release the head from the power base are stubbornly hard to push—at least simultaneously, which is what you need to do to switch heads or rotate it to one of its four positions. We had the same experience with the Octane 7-inch Grinder’s buttons. Also, the work light is on the power base and therefore doesn’t swivel as you rotate the head. That’s a bit of a nitpicky caveat, but it’s worth pointing out that the light will only illuminate your work in the “standard” position.

Ridgid JobMax Octane angled

Spring Forward

You’ve probably seen about as many tool-free oscillating blade change mechanisms as there are manufacturers. The Ridgid Octane JobMax Multi-Tool’s uses a spring-loaded lever that can snap back on your hand if you’re not careful. It holds the blade and sanding block very tightly, but it’s still not our favorite part of the design.

Ridgid JobMax Octane detail sanding

A lot of guys on our crew are big fans of Ridgid because of the Lifetime Service Agreement (LSA). If you’ve had difficulty registering for the LSA in the past, RIDGID has streamlined the process considerably, It’s also nice to know that if you do register the JobMax, it’s covered.

Price

The Ridgid Octane JobMax Multi-Tool is in a class of its own. Its competitors only offer a couple of functions—usually an oscillating tool and a sanding tool. The bare Octane Jobmax comes in at $129 which we think is quite a deal given its capabilities.

The Bottom Line

Ridgid Octane has been flexing its muscle with some impressive tools lately. The new JobMax is no exception. We used it as an oscillating tool and sander and found it excels with lots of power and runtime.

You also have options to add a jigsaw, recip saw, metal sheers, right angle drill, and right angle impact head for around $50 each. It won’t replace your tool fleet, but Octane’s capability allows the JobMax to more closely approximate dedicated tools.

We’d like it to be easier to remove/rotate the heads and the spring-loaded blade exchange lever gave us some difficulty. Still, all things considered, the souped-up Octane JobMax means versatility at a great price.

The 1-1/8-inch DeWalt 20V Max XR SDS Plus Rotary Hammer with Dust Extractor (model DCH263R2DH) is a powerful, light, and OSHA Table 1 compliant tool that impressed us from the first trigger pull. We used it for chipping and drilling on several jobs and even made a large hole in a concrete wall for a hood exhaust. This DeWalt tool helps put airborne particles in the dust bin of history!

Pros

  • Table 1 Compliant with a replaceable HEPA filter
  • Plenty of power at 3 joules
  • Dust collector is unobtrusive and easy to empty
  • SHOCKS Active Vibration Control reduces fatigue
  • Light tool at under 6 pounds (without battery)
  • Extractor runs for several seconds after trigger release for maximum dust capture

Cons

  • No significant downsides

Recommendation

We really couldn’t find a weakness in this tool. It eliminates a big, corded dust extractor from the workflow while being light and powerful. The vibration dampening system makes the DeWalt DCH263R2DH ride easy in your hands as it quickly drills and chips. It doesn’t have the bind-up eliminating E-Clutch found on the DeWalt Stud and Joist Drill, but they designed the factory-set clutch to protect against bind-ups (we didn’t experience any). The dust bin and replaceable filter are easy to clean, so your lungs can stay safe and your jobsite can stay Table 1 Compliant. If finding dust control while drilling seemed an onerous task, DeWalt puts your fears to rest.

DeWalt DCH263R2DH Performance

As OSHA’s Table 1 regulations approached a while back, some tradesmen were understandably concerned that compliance would require burdensome equipment. But those concerns weren’t justified, at least in the case of a tool like the DeWalt 20V Max XR SDS Plus Rotary Hammer with integrated DWH205DH dust extractor. Its 3 Joules of impact energy have drilled through and broken up everything we’ve thrown at it.

DeWalt DCH263R2DH rotary Hammer

Since the DeWalt DWH205DH accessory included with this rotary hammer provides onboard dust collection, you don’t even need a separate system like the DeWalt FlexVolt 60V Max Dust Extractor.

DeWalt DCH263R2DH SDS-Plus rotary hammer

The integrated DeWalt DWH205DH dust collector on the DeWalt DCH263R2DH has a similar design as other tools we’ve used. The “magic” begins in the brushed dust nozzle head that slides back and forth. It stays in contact with the drilling surface and maximizes dust collection. The dust is vacuumed up through the sliding bar where it passes through the filter into the dust bin. You just work normally, and the extractor unobtrusively captures a majority of the dust.

How Do You Drill a Large Hole with a Rotary Hammer?

We needed to drill out a large hole for a hood exhaust and lacked a core drill with a suitable circumference. That work also had to occur while atop scaffolding. We opted to drill several small holes in order to create a large one through which the hood exhaust could fit.

DeWalt SDS Plus Rotary Hammer with Dust Extraction

This would have created a lot of airborne particles in the old days. However, the sliding dust nozzle head caught nearly all of it. The three DeWalt dust nozzle heads support 1-inch diameter bits, all stop bits up to 1.5 in. shoulder, and small diameter bits up to ½-inch. The slide also accommodates SDS-Plus bits up to 10 inches long.

The DeWalt DWH205DH dust extractor takes its power from the 60V Max FlexVolt battery we used. That means you save the weight of having to use a separate power source for dust collection. We appreciated how the extractor runs for a couple of seconds after you release the trigger. It wastes very little battery run-time and keeps you from losing dust as you withdraw the bit.

DeWalt DCH263R2DH HEPA container

How It Handles Bind-Ups

This DeWalt SDS Plus Rotary Hammer seemed to hit a lot harder than my last rotary hammer. In fact, an older bit I first used snapped off inside the chuck! That was surely a fluke (and a failure on the bit’s part), but I found it noteworthy.

Of course, when you use a powerful rotary tool there’s a risk of injury in a bind-up.

Editor’s Note: What is a Bind-Up?
A bind-up occurs when a bit encounters rebar or another obstruction and transfers the rotational force to the tool. It can sprain your wrist (or worse). Some rotary hammers and even hammer drills are starting to include accelerometers, clutches, or other mechanisms that sense when this occurs and stop the tool immediately.

This DeWalt 20V Max XR rotary hammer uses a factory set clutch. It’s designed to reduce sudden, high-torque reactions. We never experienced a bind-up during this review (nor do we go looking for them!), but this feature differs from DeWalt’s effective E-Clutch system that shuts high-torque tools off in a bind-up.

We had quite a few holes to drill on this particular job. The DeWalt 20V Max XR SDS Plus Rotary Hammer is light—even with the integrated dust extractor. It also proved strong enough to drill serial holes without causing a lot of fatigue.

How Do You Clean the Filter?

You can knock the HEPA filter clean every few holes by pressing the button on the dust bin. This lets you maintain suction until the container fills up. When it’s time to empty the dust bin, simply unlock it and remove it from the extractor. It’s a smart design that keeps your work brisk and your lungs free of those dangerous particles.

Price

You can pick up the DeWalt DCH263R2DH for around $599 (see below). Here’s a look at the competition.

Reader Poll

The Bottom Line

The DeWalt 20V Max XR SDS Plus Rotary Hammer with its integrated DWH205DH dust extractor is an excellent tool for the majority of chipping and drilling work. Its inline design, effective dust capture, and light weight make it easy to use for serial drilling. We couldn’t find a true weakness. Priced comparably to its competition, it’s a great Table 1 compliant rotary hammer for any contractor.

]]>

It’s quite rare that tools don’t change much from one decade to the next, to say nothing of one century to the next. But the bubble, or spirit, level has been used in much the same way since the late 1600s. It’s really only been during the last few years that technology has attempted to improve the bubble level’s function with digital versions that offer great accuracy and more information in the form of angle measurements. But is it all too much? Perhaps it’s one of those rare cases where the technology is superfluous? There’s only one way to find out – by field-testing one of the newest high-tech digital levels available, the Empire E105.48 48-inch Digital Box Level. It’s loaded with features and built for longevity, so let’s see how it works.

First Impressions

We weren’t kidding when we said that the Empire Level e105.48 is loaded with features. The most important one must be auto-calibration. It’s the industry’s first digital level to auto-calibrate. That means it’s designed to power up and be ready to measure accurately without additional checks.

In addition to the two e-Band vials, two backlit digital displays (one top read and one side read) indicate levelness and plumbness in 7 measuring modes. Precision Modes are Degree Tenths, Degree Hundredths, MM/M, and Percentage along with Rough-In Modes of Degrees, In/Ft Fractional, and In/Ft Decimal.

Digital arrows also indicate what direction the level needs to move to find level or plumb and an audible indicator emits a continuous tone when you hit the sweet spot.

Empire Level Digital Box Level: 48-Inch e105.48

A hold button locks measurement for verification, an inspect mode make repeat measurements easy, four power save modes shut the level off to save the two AA batteries that power it, and the whole package is IP65-rated for dust and water protection. It’s all quite impressive – and there are even a few more minor features you can see in the list below.

Stop, Auto-Calibrate, and Listen

I already prefer Empire Levels and own the company’s 2-, 4-, 6-, 8-foot regular box levels. Of course, every tradesman owns or has owned many different brands of levels including what has for a long time been considered the gold standard – Stabila. But I often pass over even my Stabila for one of my Empire levels. It’s not just the attractive color combination, either! They are just well-made, tough, and accurate – not mention easier on the wallet. But let’s see how this Empire Level Digital Box Level measures up.

Our business spans the spectrum of landscaping to new construction and everything in between. We have many different jobs in process simultaneously, so I might be helping a crew frame one minute, and putting in sprinklers, building a ramp, or installing shingles the next. It might also be in the middle of the night since we offer emergency services.

Suffice it to say, there’s no shortage of times where I need a level. I love the idea of the dual functionality of this Empire level. It has a traditional feel, look, and operation with respect to the bubbles in vials augmented with the precision, audible help, and speed of a digital level.

Now I know some guys out there just won’t like it. They know the slope when the bubble hits one line, the slope when it hits the other line, and that’s all they need. But if the skeptic will give it a chance, I think they’ll find, as I found during this review, that the benefits are worth it.

Empire Level Digital Box Level: 48-Inch e105.48

Auto Calibration

Let’s start with the auto-calibration. One reason experienced tradesmen might be slow to adopt other digital levels is the complete annoyance of manual calibration. Some of them ask you to calibrate each time you turn it on or just every so often, but it takes you finding a level surface to begin with, hitting a calibration button, and then spinning the level 180 degrees to repeat the process and find the average. That’s not necessary with the Empire Level Digital Box Level. Turn it on and you’re ready to accurately level, plumb, and measure.

Digital Displays

Then there are the digital displays. You get a large side view and the smaller top view. Not only can you backlight both displays, but they allow you to use the level in many orientations because you can see them easily. Using it overhead becomes much simpler. When we were leveling floors, I can remove a slat, insert the level between the floor joists, and see what was out of level. The level also tells me by how much it’s out so we can precisely fix the problem.

top-readable LCD screen

Alarming Feature

The audible level alarm is great for the times when you can’t see the display and/or when you need complete precision. It’s almost a European level of tolerance at 0.0005-inch. Nothing in the US is measured to that tight of a tolerance. Acceptable tolerance is within 1/8 inch, but we build within 1/32 when possible.

Empire Level Digital Box Level: 48-Inch e105.48

This alarm helps you be that good as the sound changes as you get closer to perfect. Some reviewers have generally found the tolerance to be so tight that it’s annoying. If your work is out of level by what is really an imperceptible amount, the alarm squawks at you. Fortunately, you can turn it off at the press of a button.

When Digital Wins

We have a particularly challenging job right now where an enclosed, second-floor porch is pulling away from the main house. The level has been very helpful here. The degree measurements – for floors and roofs – quickly display the degrees you’ll need to accommodate. Select the mode and you can immediately calculate the pitch and the angle.

This is also perfect for grading elevations. The inspect mode is made specifically for checking ramps around a building or a similar, repeatable measurement that must be precise.

digital slope function

The rare-earth magnets are very strong, as tradesmen have come to expect from high-end magnetic levels. There are many applications for the magnets, but one often overlooked one that I use all the time – simply getting the level out of harm’s way when it’s not in use: stick it to something metal to get it out of the way when it could be stepped on, knocked over, or otherwise damaged.

Finally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that there’s a tilt indicator and that the rubber end caps come off if necessary to be sure you’re making an accurate measurement.

removable endcaps

Empire 48-inch Digital Box Level Bottom Line

The Empire Level Digital Box Level is a beautiful tool – and a highly functional one at that. Not only does it make the work of a traditional job easier, but the technology also allows you to do things that traditional level cannot – find a slope, see how far out of level something is, inspect repeatable grades, determine angles, and much more. For $129, it’s too good to pass up – and for an Empire Level fan like me, it’s time to go get the 8-footer because, well, more tools = more toys!

The Metabo HPT 18ga Narrow Crown Stapler (N3804A5) is technically a new tool but it’s backed up by the fine pedigree of Hitachi nailers. We use this kind of stapler to install soffits where a brad nail would pass through the material completely. Of course, there are many woodworking, production work, and upholstery applications, too. Let’s take a closer look.

Pros

  • Remarkably light at 2.7 pounds
  • Handy air duster to blow dust and debris from work area
  • Quick-release nose for jams (we didn’t experience any)
  • Sequential and bump fire modes

Cons

  • No significant drawbacks

Recommendation

Metabo HPT’s new, remarkably light narrow crown stapler is an excellent solution for fastening those materials that a nail or brad can’t handle. It has all the premium features you’d expect including a quick-release mechanism, no-mar nose, and comfortable grip. The tool even has a helpful integrated air duster. It certainly looks like Metabo HPT aims to maintain the reliable, easy-to-use Hitachi nailer heritage.

Metabo HPT 18ga Narrow Crown Stapler Performance

We don’t always use a narrow crown stapler on the job but, when we do, there’s no other tool that can substitute. Could we be the most interesting contractors in the world? That’s up for debate. What isn’t is that the Metabo HPT 18ga narrow crown stapler didn’t disappoint us as we installed soffits on a handful of recent jobs.

Metabo HPT N3804A5 Stapler

This stapler is compact and feather-light at 2.7 pounds which is excellent because we typically use it for overhead work. Even if you’re doing production work or upholstery, you’ll appreciate its maneuverability.

You may notice an “Oil Daily” reminder on the gun which made us chuckle a bit. That’s not because we think you should disregard the manufacturer’s instructions, but the likelihood of that happening when you’re running a medium or even small crew is pretty low! Still, be sure to maintain the gun as best you can when it gets back to the tool crib.

Metabo HPT N3804A5 Favorite Features

It’s no surprise this 18ga narrow crown stapler from Metabo HPT has all the premium features you’d expect. It has a tool-less depth of drive and belt hook. You get a no-mar nose tip with a quick release for (hypothetical) jams as well as a switch for sequential or bump fire actuation. The magazine seems tough, and an adjustable exhaust and comfortable grip round out the features. Everything comes together very well in a nice compact package.

Metabo HPT Narrow Crown Stapler trigger

In addition to all those fine features is one that you don’t see on every nailer: an air duster. That’s the small black button that protrudes from under the exhaust cap.

Metabo HPT Narrow Crown air duster

When depressed, air bypasses the staple chamber and shoots out of the side of the gun to blow away dust, cleaning the work area. It’s a really great feature, though you have to twist the tool to the side to direct air at the workpiece.

Price

The 18ga Metabo HPT narrow crown stapler is a premium tool with a premium price. Here’s a look at some of the competition:

  • Ridgid R150FSF: $99
  • Makita AT638A: $109
  • Bostitch SX1838K: $91.75
  • DeWalt DWFP1838: $124
  • Metabo HPT 18GA Narrow Crown Stapler: $169.97
Metabo HPT N3804A5 narrow crown stapler

The Bottom Line

The Metabo HPT N3804A5 narrow crown stapler easily became our favorite stapler for installing soffits and other fastening tasks where a brad nail won’t cut it. It offers all the bells and whistles you could want and even ones you didn’t know you needed—like the air duster. Compact, very light, and easy to use, we couldn’t ask the stapler for much more. At $169, it does carry a premium price, but we think it’s well worth it.

The Metabo HPT 10-inch MultiVolt Table Saw doesn’t need to compromise on cutting capacity or power because it offers both 36V battery and AC options. We’ve used this table saw to build a bar in an Orlando restaurant, trim out several jobs, and even cut up a stack of pressure-treated wood for making gate posts.

Pros

  • Hybrid power for its muscular brushless motor comes from either a 36V MultiVolt Battery or the AC Adapter with a generously long cord
  • 10-inch blade—unheard of on a cordless table saw until now
  • 35-inch rip capacity
  • Material support on fence and out-feed
  • Sturdy, smooth cutting experience
  • Big safety switch and adjustable riving knife
  • Effective rack-and-pinion fence adjustment mechanism

Cons

  • Bigger and heavier comparable cordless blue and yellow saws (it’s a 10-inch after all), so you’ll need to plan transport accordingly
  • No stand available at the time of this review
  • No on-board blade storage

Recommendation

The Metabo HPT MultiVolt Table Saw’s hybrid power capability brings contractors the best of both corded and cordless worlds. The battery’s 21700 cells offer ample power for cordless applications. The Metabo HPT AC adapter means you don’t need multiple batteries if you want the saw to work all day long. But that’s not the end of the story. Its 10-inch blade, 35-inch rip capacity, side supports, outfeed supports, smooth trunnion action for bevels, rack-and-pinion fence adjustment, and multiple safety features clear away any vestiges of a cordless table saw as a supplementary tool. The MultiVolt can very likely be your primary tool on the job and in the shop because of its hybrid feature—a feature the competition will almost certainly have to imitate.

Performance

Hybrid Power Sources

The Metabo HPT 10-inch MultiVolt Table Saw’s marquee feature is undoubtedly the unique hybrid power option. The saw accepts the new 21700-cell MultiVolt battery delivering 36V to the saw (and 18V when inserted in the product line’s 18V tools). But it can also be powered with an AC adapter.

This results in a tool that can work all day long. Several manufacturers have made impressive cordless table saws over the last few years (and we own most of them!), but unless you buy, carry, and charge several batteries, those saws can’t be in near-constant use throughout the day. However, with hybrid power, this MultiVolt Table Saw gives the impression that it never meant to be a supplementary cordless tool. It’s in the game to be your main table saw.

That powerful advantage translates to another advantage. While others run 8-1/4-inch blades, the Metabo HPT MultiVolt Table Saw runs with a 10-inch. Combine that with a footprint and table space that’s significantly bigger than the competition, and you’ve got a cordless table saw that is sturdy and smooth throughout the cut—even on larger stock.

Sink Your Teeth In

The saw came together easily out of the box with little effort. We also found that we didn’t have to do much to calibrate the table saw before we were up and running.

An effective soft start assists the process of getting up to speed (and helps tame the inrush current in corded mode). The table saw’s tall fence adjusts smoothly using the popular rack-and-pinion design.

Metabo HPT 10-in Table Saw fence gear

Metabo HPT also included a plastic fence attachment for thinner and shorter cuts. It’s probably not sturdy enough to survive the job site, but it’s a nice idea. The 35-inch rip capacity complements this saw’s other larger-than-the-competition features.

MultiVolt table saw cutting width

The trunnion’s action is as smooth as we’ve ever used. It doesn’t have freely-swinging, loose feel that many other saws exhibit. The gearing lets you easily dial it in and hold the correct angle until you lock it in place.

C3610DRJQ4 rip 2x

Smooth Operator

An outfeed support bar slides out from the back of the saw to give you a hand. Its movement isn’t as smooth as the fence’s, but it’s satisfactory and we’d rather have it than not! Other safety and convenience features include a large, accident-proof safety power switch and an adjustable riving knife.

Metabo HPT MultiVolt table saw controls

When Pro Tool Reviews previewed the Metabo HPT 10-inch MultiVolt Table Saw, a commenter pointed out another fine feature: two rubber feet on one side for standing the saw on end.

It’s also worth mentioning the Metabo HPT 10-inch MultiVolt 36V Table Saw is a 2019 Pro Tool Innovation Award Winner. It didn’t win just for the big design choices. Smaller features, like a generously long cord AC adapter cord and detents on the miter gauge also contributed.

A Few Quirks

There’s no stand for the Metabo HPT 10-inch MultiVolt Table Saw at the time of this review. That seems like an oversight—one we hope to see options for in the near future.

Metabo HPT C3610DRJQ4 ripping

You’ll also notice that the AC adapter takes up a lot of space. That’s really not a big deal, but it will have to live somewhere in your work area when you use the cord. Just make sure it’s not a trip hazard.

Metabo HPT 36V table saw battery options

The same gentleman that referenced the rubber feet in the preview’s comment section pointed out (as others have noticed) that the table has a curiously rough texture. We expect a table saw top to be smooth but, even so, we didn’t notice a difference in operation. Dimensional lumber, trim, and composite all glided across it smoothly.

Hitachi 36V table saw ripping

Finally, there’s no place to store extra blades. Several other saws offer this feature—though those cordless saws do run smaller blades.

Price

Since the Metabo HPT 10-inch MultiVolt Table Saw is unique, price comparisons with its closest competition come with asterisks.

  • DeWalt DCS7485T1 (Kit) – $449
  • Milwaukee 2736-21HD: $624.98 (kit with 12.0 Ah High Output battery), $399 (bare tool), Stand: $79
  • Metabo HPT 10-inch MultiVolt Table Saw C3610DRJQ4: $499 including either the 36V MultiVolt battery and charger starter kit or the MultiVolt AC/DC corded adapter

The Bottom Line

The Metabo HPT 10-inch MultiVolt Table Saw continues to impress us. Its dual power options, 10-inch blade, large ripping capacity, and powerful and sturdy cutting experience stand apart. You can work all day on the job site or in the shop with a combination of its MultiVolt Battery and the AC Adapter. It would be surprising if other manufacturers didn’t follow suit with hybrid power options. We’re rooting for a fold-and-roll stand, but all told, the Metabo HPT C3610DRJQ4 sets a high bar for functionality and performance.

The light and compact Everwin Joist Hanger Nailer fits in tighter spaces than its competitors and improves upon manual metal framing hardware installation by a long shot. We’re using it to construct a porch over a home’s front door by tying into the existing roof – let’s show you how it works.

Pros

  • Notably light at 4.4 pounds
  • Compact design fits between 12-inch on-center joists
  • Anti-nail back up pawl and sequential trigger lock for safety
  • Comfortable grip and easy maneuverability

Cons

  • No significant downsides

Recommendation

The Everwin Joist Hanger Nailer is another impressive offering from a company that keeps pushing the lower bounds of nailer size and weight. The tool proved comfortable, reliable, and efficient throughout the review. It let us easily hit the target holes of metal framing hardware, getting on with the job quickly. The anti-nail back up pawl, trigger lockout, and dry-fire lockout are excellent touches that round out a nailer we highly recommend.

Performance

Ties That Bind

You already know it’s not easy for a nailer to differentiate itself. Is it relatively light and jam-free? Is the firing pin durable? Then we can work with it.

Fortunately, the Everwin Joist Hanger Nailer gives us noteworthy features to talk about just like the company’s recent coil framer did. First, the tool’s purpose requires a somewhat unusual nailer design. Second, Everwin has again made a remarkably compact and light nailer without compromising power.

Everwin MCN40 magazine

A joist hanger nailer is particularly useful to us since we do our work in Hurricane Alley. It’s handy for all sorts of metal framing hardware—joist hangers, metal strapping, rafter tie connectors, foundation caps. This nailer works well for all these applications.

Everwin MCN40 positive nail placement

The tip of the nail protrudes enough to make it easy to position it in the hole. Additionally, the patented safety nose only allows the nailer to fire when the nail tip is depressed. Contrast this to the Paslode positive placement nailer or the DeWalt cordless strap nailer—both of which use a dedicated mechanism to find the hole.

Using the Everwin Positive Placement Nailer

This Everwin positive placement nailer got a workout strapping 2×4 supports to 2×6 framing for a small porch overhang. We enhanced an entranceway to provide some cover for a front door. Aside from strapping the lumber together, we also strapped the new roof joists directly to the home’s existing supporting structure per code. The Everwin joist hanger nailer made the process go very quickly.

Everwin Joist Hanger Nailing

We particularly liked the Everwin joist hanger nailer’s Anti Nail Back Up Pawl which dampens the tool’s recoil. The nose of regular nailers rests on the material. However, since a joist hanger nailer rests on the nail’s tip, the nose travels toward the material during firing and wants to bounce back up after the drive. The pawl curtails that bounce a bit.

Everwin MCN40 angled

At just 4.4 pounds and 10.8 inches tall, this nailer can easily out-maneuver its peers. And since nailing metal framing hardware requires firing from tight spaces and awkward angles, this nailer feels really nimble. Other features we appreciate include a low nail lockout, sequential trigger lock, and rotating exhaust. It also has a nice, comfortable grip.

Everwin MCN40 nailer mode switch

Price

Here’s a look at where the Everwin’s price falls among its competitors.

  • Bostitch MCN-150: $188.50
  • Metabo HPT NR38AK: $201.80
  • Everwin Joist Hanger Nailer MCN40: $249
  • Senco 6K0001N: $262

The Bottom Line

We know a lot of framers will simply use the “squint” method and fire nails into straps using a framer. The Everwin joist hanger nailer provides a better and safer way to get the job done.

Everwin Joist Hanger Nailer

Notably, the Everwin nailer’s lightweight and compact form make it an excellent tool for metal framing hardware installation. We didn’t experience any jams and appreciate the safety nose, kickback pawl, low nail lockout, and other premium features. You’ll notice its nimble performance from the first nail—and your work will benefit!

The Ridgid Octane 7-inch Grinder can run on standard Ridgid 18V packs, but the Octane platform gives it beastly power. But power isn’t the only thing beastly about the Ridgid R88040B – look at the size of the thing! Here’s what we’ve found out about it during our daily grind.

Pros

  • Lots of power on two Octane batteries although it can run on one Octane or two standard Ridgid 18V packs
  • Rotating grinding head and 3-position auxiliary handle for safe and comfortable operation
  • The grinding head is weighty enough to avoid bouncing during operation
  • Easy, tool-free guard rotation is excellent
  • Quick wheel brake

Cons

  • It’s big and heavy compared to a 4-inch grinder
  • There was a little play between grinding head and power base at the point of pivot
  • Pivot buttons were especially hard to push
  • Noticeable delay on spin-up

Recommendation

There’s no denying that a cordless 7-inch grinder with this much power is impressive. But you don’t want this to fill in for your 4-inch grinder—it’s just too big and heavy. Still, there are comfort and safety advantages to the rotating head, three handle positions, and easy-to-rotate blade guard. There is a short delay on spin-up which occurs each time you pulled the trigger. Ultimately, you can get a lot of work done with the Ridgid R88040B Octane grinder.

Performance

Back to the Grindstone

Before the Ridgid R88040B 7-inch Grinder’s wheel completed one revolution, our crew was apprehensive about its heft. It’s especially heavy with two Octane batteries inserted. The apprehension turned into a conversation about what tasks and which tradespeople the grinder best suited. Suddenly, the R88040B made a lot more sense. Perhaps you caught PTR’s interview with Kevin Gee, Senior Product Manager at Milwaukee (Ridgid’s cousin) a while back. Mr. Gee said 7- to 9-inch grinders are at home in shipyards and gas/oil industries where long, tough cuts and grinds are the norm.

Ridgid Octane angle grinder

That’s significant for a couple of reasons. First, contractors, MEP Pros, and industrial fabricators shouldn’t think this grinder replaces 4- to 6-inch tools. Neither should they dock it points for its size, especially given the monstrous amount of power it produces. It also shows Ridgid’s confidence in the Octane platform.

Ridgid Octane 7-inch grinder plate

We put the grinder to work at our shop before we even brought it to a job. First, we began the repairs on some trailer rust damage. Next, came a good deal of grinding on masonry—cutting it to fit or removing it. The Ridgid didn’t break a sweat! Since then, it’s been hard at work for our customers with equally impressive results.

Ridgid Octane 36V grinder

Handle It

The Ridgid Octane 7-inch Grinder mitigates its size/weight with a 3-position handle and a grinding head that pivots around the power base. It’s a design reminiscent of the MegaMax we reviewed a while back. In this case, however, the tool head is not interchangeable. Unfortunately, the button that allows it to pivot is very hard to push (and there are no slouches on our crew!).  There’s also a little bit of play between the head and base which we’re not crazy about.

Ridgid 7-inch grinder handle

However, the handle positions and the pivoting head make for safer, more comfortable operation—something we really liked.

Rubber meets the Road

Two things bugged us about the Ridgid Octane 7-inch Grinder. They are obviously worth mentioning but don’t break the deal. First, there’s a small separation where the front, bottom part of the handle approaches the power base’s body. This is a recipe for snags and peeled-back rubber.

Ridgid Octane 7-inch grinder handle

Second, our crew members sense a slight spin-up delay when they pull the trigger. This might be Ridgid’s intention for safety reasons due to the centrifugal force of the large wheel. But it doesn’t mimic the familiar feel of a corded grinder. Kevin Gee, in the interview we referenced above, said that brushless motors allow manufacturers to replicate a corded grinder’s feel by manipulating the spin-up speed.

Ridgid Octane grinder guard

Price

At $244 for the bare tool, the Ridgid Octane 7-inch Grinder is priced competitively. Here’s a look at the small field:

  • Makita 36V 7-inch Grinder XAG12Z1: $154.99
  • Ridgid Octane 7-inch Grinder R88040B: $244
  • Milwaukee Fuel 7- to 9-inch Grinder 2785-20: $210.00 (kit)

Ridgid R88040B Bottom Line

After hours of powerful grinding and cutting, this tool has grown on us. Ridgid’s first crack at a 7-inch grinder is an unquestionable success, especially if you emphasize cordless power over all else. Its size and weight surpass what a smaller 4-inch grinder can tackle. Other than a couple of design hiccups, we consider this tool a great option, particularly with no outlets nearby. There’s no doubt the Octane platform—and this 7-inch grinder—has opened up Ridgid tools to more trades like oil/gas and shipyard work. Ridgid has accomplished all of that at an excellent value.

We recently picked up the Lincoln Electric Power MIG 210 MP and told you about our adventures in MIG welding. For the hobbyist or the Pro contractor’s small-scale use, it packs a lot of value and performance into a transportable package. Now, we get to cover our experience using the MIG 210 MP TIG welding equipment, testing it out on some various projects.

Lincoln Electric Power MIG 210 MP Multi-Process TIG Features

  • Dual Voltage Inputs (120V or 230V)
  • Push-and-turn digital controls
  • Large color display guides you through the setup process
  • MIG, Flux-Cored, DC Stick, and DC TIG (Lift Arc)

A Time for TIG

As we mentioned in the initial review, this tool works well for occasional use. The MP or “Multi-Process” machine provides a great MIG/TIG solution for those who weld on a less frequent basis. The MIG 210 MP allows for “plug and play” MIG and stick welding. Getting it ready to work for TIG takes some setup.

In an engineering oddity we haven’t figured out, you have to disassemble the machine to add a plug for TIG. Plan on spending up to an hour doing this. Once you get the hardware in place, Lincoln has an online video showing you how to set it all up.

Once you add the TIG component, dialing in the machine works very much like the other processes. Lincoln Electric’s digital interface and easy setup process make it virtually fool-proof. This gives you a big advantage if you’re new to welding or if your skills get a little rusty between uses.

Heavy Mettle

TIG welding offers several advantages over other methods, however, it still takes a lot of mettle to perfect. Using the foot pedal allows you greater control over the amperage as does independently manipulating the electrode and gun. TIG welding also results in a cleaner weld, so it works great for products where the welds remain visible. We don’t often encounter that situation—our welding is more practical than aesthetic. Still, we like having that option with the Lincoln Electric Power MIG 210 MP.

If TIG isn’t your typical welding method, you’ll find the lift arc start to be easy. The Lincoln Electric Power MIG 210 MP does a consistently good job. Whether welding thin gauge lap joints or heavier gauge material, we found TIG welding easy to accomplish. With a little practice, this system makes it easy to improve your skills.

The Bottom Line

If you can get past the pain-in-the-neck TIG setup, the third process of the Power MIG 210 MP multi-purpose welding system performs as impressively as its MIG and stick welding.

The Everwin Coil Framing Nailer dubs itself the most compact 3-1/2 inch coil framing nailer on the market. The FCN90 model number differs slightly from the 2017 Pro Tool Innovation Award-winning FCN90L, which is the lightest coil framer available. Our crew put this Everwin framing tool to the test on many jobs over the last few months. Overall, it did a great job and kept us working efficiently.

Pros

  • Compact (as advertised) at just 11.9-inches long
  • Very powerful
  • Lightweight
  • Auto-adjusting trigger toggles between single and bump actuation

Cons

  • No significant downsides

Recommendation

Everwin has done a great job of making a powerful, light, and remarkably compact coil framing nailer. Although we know a lot of Pros prefer stick nailers, if you’re interested in one nailer to rule all your roofing, siding, and framing jobs, you’ll want to consider the FCN90.

Performance

All Coiled Up

There’s plenty of debate about coil versus stick nailers on our jobs and around the roofing industry. You get more nails, but also a relatively heavier nailer. Coils won’t easily fit in a pouch. If you drop a coil it could roll down even a low pitch roof…and so on. However, a lot of guys prefer coil nailers for sheathing and use stick nailers for framing.

Editor’s Note: Check out our review of the Everwin SCN90 siding nailer.

We picked up the Everwin Coil Framing Nailer just before the start of a remodel job. Our Pros were so interested in the noticeably compact profile (just 11.9 inches) that they had to test-fire it before going inside! We were immediately impressed with the nailer’s power. It hits hard. Over the course of the review and several more jobs, we began to prefer the FCN90 over our other framer. Not only does it require fewer reloads, but it’s also more flexible. Because it accommodates nails from 2 to 3-1/2 inches, our Pros can roof, side, and frame with the same tool.

It also helps that the coil nailer weighs a light 7.7 pounds before you add nails. The Everwin FCN90 nailer shaves at least some of its weight thanks to a nylon magazine. Although it feels flimsy, it’s actually quite tough.

Nosey Nailer

At just 11.9 inches from nose to exhaust, the Everwin coil nailer fits, as the company claims, between standard stud spacing. Now, we’ve framed walls for years with guns that wouldn’t fit between studs. As a practical matter, that might be impressive without being all that useful. Still, we can’t complain about the extra room the nailer affords in tight spaces, corners, decks, and so on.

If you looked at the red bumper around the Everwin’s nose, you might have guessed that it won’t do much framing like that. The bumper is for sheathing and siding work, and it’s removable. Underneath is a nicely spurred nose that grips wood sufficiently for toenailing and general framing.

Bells and Whistles

The Everwin Coil Framing Nailer features nearly all the premium things we like. The rubber grip is comfortable, adding to the tool’s well-balanced ergonomics.  It’s easy to switch between single actuation and bump fire. There’s a rotatable hook, too. A lot of Pros might remove the dust cover, but it certainly cuts down on collation shrapnel.

Everwin coil framing nailer back

The website specs report that the exhaust cover is “360° multi-directional”, but that’s clearly not the case as the exhaust can only be released through the top. That’s not a big deal to us. However, no rubber bumpers exist along the body to protect the tool. Even though the nailer is tough, we’d like to see some along the widest part of the body.

Price

The Everwin Coil Framing Nailer will set you back $295. Here’s a look at some similar tools’ prices.

  • Bostitch N89c-1: $260
  • Hitachi NV90AG(S): $280
  • Dewalt DW325C: $280
  • Everwin Coil Framing Nailer FCN90: $295
  • Senco SCN65: $340
  • Hitachi NV83A5: $399

The Bottom Line

Everwin’s effort to push forward the framing nailer’s power, compactness, and performance is clearly evident in the FCN90. It can easily handle sheathing, siding, and framing in tighter spaces with fewer reloads than many of its peers. We’d like to see some rubberized bumpers along the body but otherwise, it’s hard to find fault with this coil nailer—and easy to love it.
