Good point. A 23 ga. pin left proud of the workpiece is a pain in the neck to sink. Usually bends over when struck with a nail set causing more of a mess than an 18 ga. nail. This is especially problematic when working with material (usually hardwoods) to be stained.

That’s a really great point about the magazine depth being smaller. For those looking for the most compact solution, nail length or capacity isn’t a benefit.

I have used many trim guns and each one leaves a different hole behind. Some are small and clean while others are larger and jagged. That applies to every gauge. It would also be good, as this is a review, and not an overview, to know how it works in different wood, can it drive what size nails in what matterial? Does it drive all sizes in all materials from oak and walnut to painted pine, or does it struggle with certain circumstances? Does the belt clip actually work? Covering the dry fire lockout was very helpful.

There are several 18v pinners (haven’t seen any 20v). Go with the 12v Makita. Small, light (for a battery unit) and does the job.

I’m a carpenter in business for over 40 years and totally agree. I’ve never looked back since I bought my first Grex. Now I own several including Cadex, Senco, Porter-Cable, Makita and Hitachi. Frankly, a refurbished Hitachi cost me around $80 and isn’t significantly different from my Cadex (at $250!). It should be noted that with that longer nail capacity, you also get a “deeper” more bulky magazine. Not a plus as one of the main features of pinners is their diminutive size allowing you to get into small, inaccessible areas. While I’m talking about these, it’s worth mentioning the Senco 21 ga. Just a bit thicker nail with a lot of holding power. But my fave is easily the Makita 12v. I bought the 18v version when it first came out but found it bulky and heavy and tended to bounce when fired marring the workpiece. Seems I’ll try almost anything to lose the compressor and hose! I (and my crew) find the 12v gun to be small, light and easy to use. And has plenty of power to sink the pins. Often when we’re doing fine trim work, we’re moving all over the job site. A real pleasure not to be dragging compressors, hoses and power cords. Not to mention losing the sonic grind of a compressor kicking in.
All said, I don’t see any real improvements in this DeWalt. All of them have the double trigger. The jam clearing feature seems nice and the 2″ capacity at the price is good. But as you say, I rarely need pins that long either.
BTW, I buy my compressors based primarily on decibel rating…

Cheers,
Pete MCG
