Ryobi ONE+ HP Power Tools – More Compact Power

Ryobi ONE+ HP power tools

Ryobi One+ HP power tools launched as a more compact and capable lineup of DIY and tradesmen tools. These new tools introduce brushless motors, new electronics, and updated slim battery packs. The Ryobi One+ HP (High Performance) launch has a lot to do with producing more powerful tools in a more compact form factor. One+ HP batteries also bring new oversize fuel gauges in addition to really slimming down the pack size.

Ryobi ONE+ HP Power Tools Overview

The initial Ryobi ONE+ HP Power Tools lineup included six new tools in several configurations. More tools quickly joined the initial releases. All tools exist as bare tools or as part of a kit with one or more 1.5Ah Ryobi One+ HP battery packs. Ryobi also has a two-tool kit (PSBCK01K) with the new 1/2-inch drill driver and 1/4-inch impact driver. The new tools look capable at first glance, though they certainly stick to the company’s primary focus on DIY applications.

The Ryobi PSBDD01K 18V ONE+ HP drill optimizes weight and size to deliver a powerful new drill that matches up well against the competition. They demonstrated the tool drilling through a metal stud using a 1-inch hole saw. Ryobi also demonstrated the runtime against a similar tool. With the new One+ HP battery pack loaded with a 1/2-inch spade bit, it accomplished 111 holes in 2×4 pine.

Ryobi HP PSBRA02B Compact Brushless Right Angle Drill

Ryobi claims this is the industry’s most compact right-angle drill measuring just 3.6 inches deep from the chuck to the back of the head. The targeted compactness and power make this a handy-looking tool for jobs where you need to get in close. A demo included drilling through double-stacked 2x4s with a 3/4-inch bit.

Because of the paddle trigger, you can choke up on it near the top of the handle, or use it traditionally. iI also lets you get additional leverage by placing your hand on the back of the tool. In terms of compactness, you can really squeeze it into those smaller spaces—say when driving an electrical box between two closely-spaced studs or installing hinges or drawer pulls.

  • Model (bare tool): PSBRA02B
  • Chuck: 3/8-inch single sleeve
  • 2-speed gearbox

Ryobi targeted Pros and DIYers looking for a compact lightweight solution for repetitive and/or overhead applications. The brushless motor on the Ryobi PSBID01 delivers enough runtime to last all day long with a pair of ONE+ HP batteries.

Ryobi included the expected LED work light as well as a variable-speed trigger. One feature we really liked was the one-handed bit release. For driving larger fasteners, Ryobi upped the torque to 1,700 inch-pounds. The runtime also looks good as we saw this impact driver sink 211 2.5-inch deck screws into pressure-treated 4×4 lumber on a single 1.5Ah One+ HP battery.

  • Model (kit): PSBID01K
  • Brushless motor
  • Impacts: 3,800 IPM
  • Speed: 2,900 RPM
  • Torque: 1,700 in-lbs
  • One-handed bit release

Ryobi One+ HP One-handed Reciprocating Saw

Ryobi HP PSBRS01B One-handed Reciprocating Saw
Ryobi One+ HP One-handed Reciprocating Saw PSBRS01B

The Ryobi ONE+ HP compact one-handed recip saw looks similar to other models we’ve seen. One-handed reciprocating saws, as you might expect, reduce the size of the overall tool. They also reduce weight. Pros find these tools helpful when working with arms extended or when getting into tight areas in crawlspaces or attics. It certainly saves a lot of room over the Ryobi P517 18V reciprocating saw.

We saw the tool cut through 2×4 and PVC material quickly and easily. While not surprising or unusual, we did like the implementation of an easy-release blade lever. It releases the blade without forcing you to grab it when it’s hot or use gloves. Cutting through EMT, it also showed the 5/8-inch stroke length optimizes this tool for metal, PVC, and clean wood cutting. It’s a nice addition to your full-sized reciprocating saw.

  • Model (bare tool): PSBRS01B
  • Speed: 3,000 SPM
  • Brushless motor
  • Easy-release blade lever
  • Stroke: 5/8-inch
  • Compact 13 in. length
  • Adjustable pivoting shoe
  • LED light
  • Price: $99 (bare tool)

Ryobi One+ 4-Mode 3/8″ Impact Wrench

Ryobi One+ 4-Mode 3-8-inch Impact Wrench

On top of having three speeds, the new Ryobi HP 3/8-inch impact wrench features a fourth mode. This mode does a couple of things. First, in Forward, it stops the tool as soon as the impact mechanism kicks in. This stops the rotation, letting you use a torque wrench to manually torque to spec. In reverse, it stops the tool as soon as the fastener breaks free. That keeps you from losing nuts and bolts during removal.

They demoed the Ryobi impact wrench removing various nuts and bolts. With up to 160 ft-lbs of torque, it makes for a handy tool. They also did some fastening tests to show off the torque control.

  • Model (bare tool): PSBIW01B
  • 3/8-inch friction-ring anvil
  • Brushless motor
  • Torque: 160 ft-lbs.
  • 3-speeds (up to 1,900 RPM)
  • 3,900 IPM
  • 4-mode speed control
  • Variable speed trigger
  • LED light
  • Length: 5.4 in.
  • Price: $119 (bare tool)

Ryobi One+ HP 3-inch Multi-material Cutoff Tool

Ryobi HP PSBCS02B Multi-material Cutoff Tool

You can use this tool to cut anything from wire shelving to diamond plate to vinyl siding or threaded rod. It even cuts through ceramic or porcelain tile. Of course, it also handles drywall or 3/4-inch sheet goods like OSB or plywood.

Ryobi tested it using a carbide abrasive blade to cut vinyl siding (in reverse mode). You can switch the direction of the blade, letting you cut forward when that rotation offers better performance (think tile cutting vs ripping plywood). During the demo, the abrasive blade made quick work of cutting through wire shelving—though it did make a bunch of sparks.

  • Model (bare tool): PSBCS02B
  • Dual LED lights before the blade and on the foot of the shoe
  • Brushless motor
  • Forward/reverse cutting
  • Supports 3-inch wheels
  • Speed (max): 19,500 RPM
  • Arbor: 3/8-inch (also includes 5/8-inch flange)
  • Adjustable guard
  • Wire base for stability
  • Onboard blade wrench storage
  • Compact 8.5″ size
  • Price: $99 (bare tool)
  • Includes: Cut-off Tool, Metal Cut-off Wheel, Carbide Abrasive Blade, Diamond Tile Blade, Hex Key, and Operator’s Manual.

Ryobi ONE+ 18V High-Performance Battery Packs

These new battery packs include oversized fuel gauges. The batteries also seem more compact than earlier designs. It’s like they put their battery on a South Beach diet and made it do some pull-ups. Currently, Ryobi makes these new High Performance batteries in the following sizes:

  • 2Ah
  • 4Ah

Ryobi ONE+ vs ONE+ HP Tools

Practically speaking, Ryobi smoothed out the front and the edges of the new tools. It gives the new batteries and tools a “sleeker” look. You can’t argue with the results—these batteries make Ryobi all tools look better. We look forward to seeing these packs take over and also slim up the company’s 4Ah batteries.

Ryobi continues to offer a 3-year warranty on these and other Ryobi power tools. All Ryobi ONE+ HP power tools and batteries remain cross-compatible with the company’s entire line of 175+ lithium-ion cordless products. All tools are exclusive to The Home Depot.

WTF? Quote “Practically-speaking, Ryobi smoothed out the front and the edges, giving the new packs a “sleek” look. You can’t argue with the results—these batteries make Ryobi all tools look better.” I can argue it all day long. There’s nothing practical about a battery that just makes the tool easier to tip over and I could care less how sleek my tool battery looks, just that it has impact resistance and of course supplies the needed current and runtime. Towards that end I have no interest in anything smaller than their 3.0Ah, and more often choose 4.0Ah for the better… Read more »

Those are not HP batteries. Nowhere does it say anything about HP on them. They are also missing the extra contact tabs which is what makes the actually HP batteries high powered

Ronnie E Hale

What are the battery specifications?
