I have on several occasions had problems with, not only the 12V drill, but the 18V too.
I absolutely love the power and durability of the 18V Octane drill, but sadly the bit will fall out with 2 or 3 pulls of the trigger. As an HVAC contractor, we do a lot of drilling, and using the Rigid 12V to drive screws or the 18V to dtrill is an exercise in futility, and they got returned. It’s a shame because the 18V Octane hammer drill makes drilling a 2-5/8″ hole thru concrete block or brick for plastic vent pipe a breeze. What a shame, and the fix is so simple, spec out a different chuck. The Octane spindle brake is so abrupt that I don’t know if any chuck would withstand the hammering it takes when it stops. Take a look at Dewalt or Milwaukee and you’ll see a more “soft” stop than the Rigid. When I returned the Octane drill to HD, I demonstrated it for the clerk who was amazed how easily it dropped bits. I actually like, or at least don’t mind the larger size of Rigids 18V drills as it gives you a bit more drill to hold on to when doing heavy duty drilling, fix the chuck issue and I’d be a customer again.
