The Hilti Nuron Cordless Impact Driver Packs A Serious Punch In A Compact Frame

The Hilti Nuron cordless impact driver is part of the latest generation of tools coming down the pipe from Hilti and it’s boasting eye-opening performance improvements. We’re putting it to the test and diving deeper to see how it compares to Hilti’s other cordless impact drivers.

Pros

  • Strongest impact driver we’ve tested
  • Significant improvement in performance compared to the SID 4-A22
  • More compact than the previous model
  • Excellent ergonomics
  • LED light ring surrounding the collet
  • Nuron technology

Cons

  • Slower driving light and medium-size fasteners than some competitors
  • On the heavy side when you’re not using the most compact battery

Hilti Nuron Cordless Impact Driver Performance

Hilti Nuron Cordless Impact Driver Review SID 6-22

Diving into the details on this impact driver reveals some truly impressive specs. It’s Hilti’s most powerful 1/4-inch impact driver and the most powerful we’ve seen on paper. The brushless motor produces up to 2,655 in-lbs of torque. The previous leader was Flex at 2500 in-lbs.

For speed, it’s a bit slower than some of the top dogs, topping out at 3600 RPM. With some models hitting 4000 RPM or more in high speed, we expect this to run a little slower with light to medium-size fasteners.

That’s not an unusual move with impact tools, though. If you consider impact wrenches, as they grow in overall power from compact through mid-torque all the way to high-torque, the top speed tends to drop.

That’s what we saw in our 8-inch GRK rugged structural screws test. Driving into stacked OSB, Hilti’s Nuron impact driver averaged 10.4 seconds. That’s significantly slower than the 5.8 seconds of Milwaukee’s M18 Fuel which currently holds the record.

Before we close the door on this part of the conversation, there are a couple of important takeaways. First, it’s a big jump from the SID 4-A22 on Hilti’s previous line. That one had just 2700 RPM and a max torque of 1717 in-lbs.

The other side is the impressive torque level. Particularly in wood fastening when adapters and bits hold up better, you can drive lag screws and other large fasteners… all the way up to M16 bolts according to Hilti’s ratings.

Hilti Nuron Cordless Impact Driver Design Notes

Ergonomics

Hilti Nuron Cordless Impact Driver Review SID 6-22

The textured and contoured grip is very comfortable and gives you a ton of control during long periods of use, or when working overhead. With the recommended B 22-85 battery in place, the SID 6-22 has a good balance and isn’t too top or bottom-heavy.

While it’s still a beefy tool (2.2 pounds bare, 3.9 pounds with a 4.0Ah battery), it’s more compact than the SID 4-A22. Measuring 5.4 inches from front to back, it’s about 1/2 an inch shorter.

LED Worklight

SID 6-22

One thing we love about this impact driver is the LED light ring surrounding the collet. It helps to fully illuminate the work area and has a diffuser on it which softens the light and cuts glare on your material.

Additional Features

  • Protective rubber bumpers
  • One-handed bit insertion

Nuron Technology Benefits

HIlti Nuron Battery

With Nuron’s updated battery design, we expect longer runtime, especially when you need to keep the tool under a heavier load for longer periods of time. It’s a combination of cell selection, cooling technology, and lower resistance of the pack design that makes it happen. All of that works together to power this impact driver more efficiently than before.

On the inventory management side of things, the batteries’ ability to automatically store and transmit data about the tool and battery can be a big help. Even if You’re using multiple tools with one battery, it stores the data and transmits it via the charger when you put it on.

Hilti Nuron Cordless Impact Driver Price

This Hilti Nuron retails for $169 as a bare tool. From there, you can customize your kit with the exact batteries and chargers you want. Hilti backs the tool with its signature 20-year warranty, 2 years of free service, and 1-day turnaround on service.

If you’re looking to outfit an entire tool crib, be sure to check out Hilti’s fleet pricing program. It includes free service, maintenance, and loaner tools to help mitigate downtime. On this program, the price for the SID 6-22 comes to $5.50 per month.

Compatible Batteries

  • 2.5Ah (B 22-55): $84 each (most compact option)
  • 4.0 Ah (B 22-85): $114 each (best for balancing size and weight with performance and runtime)
  • 8.0 Ah (B 22-170): $174 each (best for long runtime and extra performance but heavy)
  • 12.0 Ah (B 22-255): $204 each (compatible but not recommended due to size and weight)

The Bottom Line

The Hilti SID 6-22 impact driver is another example of how Nuron technology is resulting in significantly higher performance. It leaves its predecessor in the dust with far greater speed and torque. While it still has some room to grow in speed, its impressive power makes it far more capable of driving large fasteners than its competition.

Masterforce Cordless Hammer Drill Gets a Big Boost in Performance From New Tech

The Masterforce Boost cordless hammer drill joins the ranks of advanced cordless tools with its Boost technology. Merging better battery and motor tech together, we tested it against the previous FlexPower brushless model to see what kind of difference you should expect.

Pros

  • Brushless motor
  • Big performance upgrade from the previous model
  • More compact and lighter than the previous model
  • Impulse mode
  • Separate clutch and mode collars
  • Metal chuck
  • Excellent value

Cons

  • On the heavy side

Masterforce Boost Hammer Drill Performance

Masterforce Boost Cordless Hammer Drill

As you can see from the chart below, the Masterforce Boost hammer drill gets a pretty significant performance upgrade thanks to the updated technology. Even drilling our first few test holes, we could feel the difference.

Masterforce Boost Vs Masterforce Brushless Hammer Drill

20V FlexPower
(241-0464)

Max Torque700 in-lbs800 in-lbs
Hammer Rate6,500/24,050 BPM8,000/32,000 BPM

The performance of the previous model wasn’t bad at all. The speed and torque were on par with other top Prosumer models and it outperformed pure DIY options.

However, the landscape began changing with advanced battery and motor technology. Premium brands took advantage first and now Masterforce and other Prosumers brands have. That’s the Boost difference.

Now, the performance reaches where mid-range professional models are and significantly boosts your productivity. Feel free to use your full range of twist bits, spade bits, and auger bits. Even self-feed bits up to 2 9/16 inches and hole saws up to 3 inches are well within its capabilities.

Impulse Mode

Masterforce Impulse Mode

In addition to the 2-speed gearbox on top of the housing, Masterforce also includes an impulse mode you can select on the foot. This mode creates a pulsing action by cycling the motor on and off. It’s nowhere near the rate of an impact driver, pulsing about 100 times per minute.

This mode works in high or low gear and is useful to encourage stubborn fasteners or to get a more accurate start on smooth material surfaces.

Battery Compatibility

Masterforce Boost Battery

Like many advanced cordless tools, you get the best performance when you pair this hammer drill with an advanced Boost battery. However, you can still use your Masterforce FlexPower 20V batteries. You’ll just notice a drop in performance.

Masterforce Boost Hammer Drill Design Notes

Masterforce Boost Cordless Hammer Drill

The overall design is about a 1/2-inch shorter and a couple of ounces lighter than the previous model. The drill driver version drops another 1/2-inch off of that and is impressively compact for its performance level.

It’s on the hefty side at 3.1 pounds bare. Stick the with 2.5Ah battery to keep the overall weight to a manageable 4.2 pounds.

The handle is agreeably curvy and comfortable for a wide range of hand sizes.

Feature Set

  • Metal chuck
  • Foot-mounted LED light
  • Auxiliary handle included
  • Belt clip
  • Integrated bit holder

Masterforce Boost Cordless Hammer Drill Price

You can find Masterforce’s latest cordless hammer drill at Menards for $167.97 with a 2.5Ah battery and charger. We’ve seen it under $150.00 with a mail-in rebate offer. Considering its performance, that’s a pretty attractive price tag.

If you don’t need the concrete drilling capabilities of a hammer drill, the drill driver kit is $144.89.

The Bottom Line

With the Masterforce Boost cordless hammer drill, we find an impressive blend of performance and value. It’s a drill that legitimately performs at a professional level with a price that’s well within reach of serious DIYers. If getting a lot of bang for your buck is a big deal for you, Masterforce Boost cordless tools should be on your shortlist.

Skil 12V Brushless Drill Drops Size While Maintaining Performance

The big draw for 12V power tools is undoubtedly their compact size and lightweight design. Well, the folks over at Skil decided they could do better with its 12V drill offerings. We’re taking a close-up look at the Skil PWRCore 12V 2-Speed Brushless Drill and Hammer Drill to see what’s changed from the previous generation.

Want more drills? Check out our top cordless drill recommendations!

Skil 12V Brushless Drill Performance

Brushless Motor

As far as performance is concerned, Skil really didn’t make any changes from the previous models. These drills employ brushless motors that produce up to 450 RPM in low gear and 1,700 RPM in high gear. The torque tops out at 350 in-lbs.

If you go with the hammer drill (which we recommend), you get the additional 6750 BPM in low and 25500 BPM in high gear to help with concrete and masonry drilling.

Skil 12V Brushless Drill and Hammer Drill Review

So what does that mean in terms of real-world performance?

With this kind of performance, you have the power to tackle most of your everyday household drilling and driving tasks. We found that it was confident while driving screws and drilling with a full range of twist bit sizes.

For the sake of science (and to satisfy our own curiosity), we tested several types of bits and found that a 1-inch spade bit or auger bit is about as big as this drill is comfortable with. We successfully drilled with a 1 1/2-inch self-feed bit, but it’s making the drill work hard at that point. If you find yourself needing a bit more power, consider one of Skil’s full-sized models for the best performance.

Skil 12V Brushless Drill Design Notes

Ergonomics

Ergonomics

The most significant change for these drills is definitely the size reduction. The drill is 6.06 inches from end to end and the hammer drill measures 6.54 inches. That’s almost an entire inch shorter compared to their predecessors!

Bare, the drill weighs 1.9 pounds while the hammer drill clocks in at 2.1 pounds. There’s a slight drop in weight from the previous models.

Along with being compact, they feel very comfortable in the hand. The grip is slightly angled forward which makes for a more favorable working angle when using this drill.

Additional Features

  • LED light
  • Reversible belt hook
  • Ratcheting 1/2-inch chuck
  • 17 clutch settings
  • Tether ready
  • Bit holder on the back of the foot
  • Compatible with all Skil PWRCore 12 batteries

Skil 12V Brushless Drill Price

Skil 12V Brushless Drill and Hammer Drill Review

These Skil 12V drills are hitting the shelves with an exceptionally attractive price tag. The drill driver kit retails for $69.99 and the hammer drill kit is only $99.00! Both come with a 12V 2.0Ah battery, an upgraded PWRJump charger, and a 5-year warranty. Plus, the batteries feature a USB-A port on the back so they can double as a portable power supply for your devices.

The Bottom Line

As we mentioned earlier, the big deal with these drills is their significant drop in size without losing anything on the performance side. Not to mention, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a deal much better than this. I mean, a compact brushless drill kit under $100 and a killer warranty to back it up? Yes, please!

Overall, these drills are a fantastic option for homeowners and DIYers that you’ll enjoy much more than what some of the other DIY brands offer. The hammer drill, in particular, is also a good option for Pros that want a high-value compact supplement to their premium workhorse drills for light-duty work.

HART’s 4V Screwdriver Helps With Household Driving Tasks

Driving screws with a manual screwdriver can get old fast. This goes double for people with wrist or hand mobility issues, where repetitive motions can cause discomfort. A drill could work instead, but they’re often bulky and can be too powerful and fast for small household driving tasks. The HART 4V Cordless Screwdriver serves as an inviting middle ground and we got it in our hands to take a closer look.

Using HART 4V Cordless Screwdriver

HART 4V Cordless Screwdriver Review

Being almost like the baby brother of the cordless drill, the concept of a cordless screwdriver isn’t new. Many of the ones we see on the market feature a straight, inline design but HART’s HFSD02 is reminiscent of a mini-drill (or the Noisy Cricket from Men in Black if you ask Josh McGaffigan). Either way, it’s small and the design is 40% more compact than the previous HSFD01 cordless screwdriver model.

HART 4V Cordless Screwdriver Review

The tool’s motor produces up to 250 RPM, which is 50 RPM more than the previous model. It features two buttons that form the trigger— forward and reverse— making the design simple, yet effective for tightening and loosening small fasteners.

The trigger isn’t variable speed like a drill, but the RPMs are low enough that you still have plenty of control. Plus, the torque is low enough that there’s little risk of damaging the material you’re working with by overdriving.

Trigger

The motor uses an internal 4V battery that recharges via USB cable. With the battery fully down, it takes 2 hours to recharge.

The screwdriver includes a #2 Phillips and a slotted bit. There’s onboard bit storage for a spare, so while you’re using one bit, you can nestle the other in the storage slot on top of the tool. The tool accepts any 1/4-inch hex shank bit. Stick with 2-inch long bits at a minimum for the easiest screwdriving. However, you can use a 1-inch bit if you need to work in a really tight spot.

Bit Holder

Additionally, If you’re working in a low-light area, the integrated LED turns on automatically when you press the trigger.

Additional Features

  • Rubberized grip
  • Integrated lanyard loop for easy hanging storage

HART 4V Cordless Screwdriver Price

This tool retails for $24.88, including the two bits and a 4V charging cord. Like all HART tools, you can find it exclusively at Walmart. HART backs your purchase with a 3-year warranty.

The Bottom Line

HART’s 4V cordless screwdriver is a super-handy tool to have in your home. Its pistol-grip design is more comfortable than inline versions and being able to drive in forward or reverse without having to flip a switch is convenient. For less than $25, it’s a tool every household should have.

Skil 20V Compact Impact Driver Delivers Higher Performance In A Smaller Package

If you take a look at the best names in the business, many offer a compact impact driver with lower weight and smaller size to fit in tighter spaces. The trade-off is performance, and you need to jump up to the more expensive flagship models to get the best. Is that always the case? We got our hands on the Skil 20V Compact Impact Driver to see what the product team came up with.

Skil 20V Compact Impact Driver Performance

Speed and Power

Skil 20V Brushless Compact Impact Driver Review

The Skil ID6739B features three standard drive modes and a Control Mode, which is an upgrade from the previous model’s 2-mode system. In high, the brushless motor tops out at 3100 RPM—400 RPM higher than the previous PWRCore 20 brushless model. The impact rate is higher as well, jumping from 3400 IPM all the way to 3950 IPM.

The only thing that stays the same is the torque. At 1800 in-lbs, it didn’t really need to increase, though. That’s enough power to drive the majority of fasteners you come across. Considering it’s also enough to break those socket adapters you might be tempted to use, the speed increase was a more important improvement.

Skil 20V Brushless Compact Impact Driver Review

It’s still not as fast as some of the top-tier Pro models, but it drives with confidence in an array of deck screws, structural screws, and small-diameter lag screws. Here’s a quick look at some recommendations for each mode:

Impacts Per MinuteNo-Load RPMsMain PurposeBest Application
Mode 12,4501,800Applies less torque to avoid damaging fastenersDriving small screws during light-duty work, such as assembling furniture
Mode 23,4002,500Applies medium speed and torqueDriving medium-duty deck screws and smaller bolts
Mode 33,9503,100Applies max torque and speedDriving heavy-duty wood fasteners and tightening small bolts
Control Mode3,950VariableSteady control while driving fastenersPerfect for driving long screws

Using Control Mode

In control mode, the tool runs at low speed at first to help engage the fastener into your material. Once the screw is well engaged, the tool increases the speed automatically to finish the work efficiently. The control mode only functions when the tool is set in forward rotation. If you switch to reverse rotation while in control mode, the impact rate and speed are the same as in Mode 2.

Skil 20V Compact Impact Driver Design Notes

Ergonomics

Holding the Tool

This compact impact driver weighs in at 2.1 pounds bare and 3.1 pounds with the kitted 2.0Ah battery, which is what we expect from this category. Additionally, it measures 4.9 inches from tip to tail which makes it ideal for working in tight spaces such as a cabinet or crawlspace.

These are both significant improvements as well. The weight is down by nearly 1/2 a pound and the length is 8/10ths of an inch shorter. Holding them side-by-side, it’s an obvious difference.

Ergonomically, this impact driver feels pretty good in the hand. The compact battery doesn’t throw the tool off balance at all and the handle has a nice form-fitting curve to it. Skil also added some larger texturing and grooves to channel away sweat to maintain a secure hold while it’s in use.

LED Light

LED Halo

Much like most modern tools, this impact driver features an LED light for low-light conditions. This tool is equipped with a diffused halo-style light that surrounds the collet and it’s a more effective way of lighting than foot-mounted lights. In addition to the trigger activation, there’s also an option to turn it on for 10 minutes and to turn it back off if you don’t need the light for the full time.

Additional Features

  • One-hand collet
  • Onboard bit storage
  • Reversible belt hook
  • Tether ready
  • Battery doubles as a USB-A power supply
  • Compatible with all Skil PWRCore 20 batteries

The Skil 20V Compact Brushless Impact Driver improves its performance while dropping in size and weight. Combined with a sub-$100 price tag, it’s one of the best values currently available. Do More With The Updated Ridgid 18V SubCompact Impact Driver

Ridgid is revamping its 18V SubCompact lineup in a big way by improving overall power, performance, and design across the board. Today, we’re taking a quick look at the next-gen Ridgid 18V SubCompact Impact Driver.

Ridgid 18V SubCompact Impact Driver Performance

Ridgid 18V SubCompact Impact Driver Review

Side by side, there are a number of similarities between this model and the previous SubCompact generation from Ridgid. However, there are also some pretty significant differences when you look under the hood. Here’s a quick comparison between the two that highlights the key differences:

Ridgid R8723
(Original)
Ridgid R872311
(New)
Impact Rate3,800 IPM4,200 IPM
Max Torque1,800 in-lbs.1,850 in-lbs.
No-Load Speed2,900 RPM2,900 RPM
Number of Drive Modes14
Weight (with 2.0Ah battery)2.75 lbs.2.60 lbs.
Price$99 (bare)$139 (kit)

The big deal here is that Ridgid has upped the torque and impact rate which allow this tool to work quicker and more effectively than its predecessor.

Mode Selection

Mode selection

Another upgrade on this impact driver is the mode selection system. This lets you quickly dial in the top speed from 900 to 2,900 RPMs to match whatever material you’re working with rather than constantly feathering the trigger to adjust speed.

Pressing the rear-mounted mode selector button allows you to cycle between low, medium, high, and self-tapping modes. The self-tapping mode starts fast and then drops the speed down to 2,150 RPMs, reducing the chances of stripping fasteners or damaging your material.

Comparison Shot
Original (left) vs New (right)

Much like its predecessor, this SubCompact impact driver is quite small in stature. It stands 8.75 inches tall with a 2.0Ah battery and only measures 4.75 inches from end to end. Using that same 2.0Ah battery, this impact driver weighs 2.6 pounds—slightly lighter than the previous model.

As a matter of personal preference, I tend to really enjoy the feel of Ridgid tools because they contour nicely to my medium hands. The overmold design on this model departs from the full Hex-Grip style and has a little more curve and forward angle for a more favorable grip position.

Additional Features

  • LED light
  • Two-position belt hook (left or right)
  • One-handed bit insertion
  • Active bit ejection

Ridgid 18V SubCompact Impact Driver Price

This updated Ridgid 18V SubCompact Impact Driver retails as a kit for $139 from The Home Depot. It comes standard with a single 2.0Ah battery, charger, soft carrying case, and the Ridgid Lifetime Service Agreement. Just be sure to register your purchase within 90 days to take advantage of the LSA.

The Bottom Line

Side by side with the original R8723, Ridgid improved the ergonomics as well as expanded its performance. Adding the multi-speed gearbox and the self-tapping mode make this a more versatile choice for Pros. It’s an excellent choice for Pros who need a compact impact driver and it has the performance to be a primary option for many tradesmen.

Ridgid 18V SubCompact Drill Gets A Power Upgrade

The Ridgid 18V SubCompact lineup includes a number of tools that rival most 12V tools in size but keep you on the popular 18V battery system. Today we’re examining the next-generation versions of the Ridgid 18V SubCompact drill driver and hammer drill.

Ridgid 18V SubCompact Drill Performance

Ridgid 18V SubCompact Drill and Hammer Drill Review

Both tools feature a 24-position clutch, all-metal gears, and brushless motors. These motors churn out up to 450 RPMS in Low and 1,750 RPMs in High, plus, 500 in-lbs. of torque. The hammer drill’s impact mechanism works at a rate of 26,000 BPM. Compared to the previous version, that’s the same speed with a 75 in-lbs more torque. Considering their size, those are impressive specifications and they have more power than you’re going to get out of 12V drills.

Hands-On Testing

Drilling Wood

We took both of these drills out to our shop to get see how they performed under pressure. Testing a variety of different bits in wood, the drill performed confidently as it powered through the material.

We also chucked up several sizes of masonry bits and drilled them into 4000 PSI concrete. To no surprise, the hammer drill handled those bits with relative ease.

Of course, neither drill is designed to compete against the best of the best. For the compact class, though, they do an excellent job.

One particular factor that we weren’t expecting was the sound that both of these drills make during operation. Even though it may not be a deciding factor for many, these drills produce a smooth whirring sound that is much more pleasant than other drills on the market.

Ridgid 18V SubCompact Drill Design Notes

Ergonomics

Ridgid 18V SubCompact Drill and Hammer Drill Review

As we expect from a related drill driver and hammer drill, these tools are nearly identical, apart from a few identifying marks and a little weight. With a 2.0Ah battery, the drill driver weighs 2.9 pounds while the hammer drill driver comes in at 3.1 pounds. They also measure 6 inches and 6 1/2 inches from tip to tail, respectively. Those compact designs come in handy when space is limited. If you need to reach into even tighter spaces, check out Ridgid’s SubCompact right angle drill.

Generally speaking, I tend to really enjoy the feel of Ridgid tools because they contour nicely to my hands. In this case, they added a little more curve and angle to the grip compared to the prior Ridgid R8701/R8711 and added a full rubber overmold that improves your overall grip.

The design team over at Ridgid did a great job of refining and softening some of the hard edges on these tools to give them a smoother feel. They also slimmed up the base of the tool and increased the size of the vents on the rear for better airflow and cooling.

  • LED work light
  • 2-position belt hook

Both of these tools are currently available as kits from The Home Depot and come with a pair of 2.0Ah batteries, a single-port charger, and a carrying case. The drill driver retails for $149.00 and the hammer drill goes for $159.00. Both carry Ridgid’s lifetime service agreement when you register them within 90 days of purchase.

The Bottom Line

Compared to the original SubCompact drill and hammer drill, Ridgid primarly tweaked the ergonomics while boosting the overall torque significantly. They are perfect for those light to medium-duty applications where working space is limited or a lighter tool simply proves advantageous. If you’re considering buying into a compact 12V tool platform for these reasons, take a look at the Ridgid 18V SubCompact lineup instead. In most cases, you’ll have access to far more tools that work on the same batteries and you still get a compact, lightweight drill.

Nuron Technology Boosts Hilti Hammer Drill Performance and Intelligence

Hilti is making waves with a sweeping change to their cordless platform, shifting from a separate 22V and 36V approach to the Nuron system that uses either one or two 22V batteries for power. What does that mean for core tools, such as the Hilti Nuron 22V cordless hammer drill?

Hilti Nuron 22V Cordless Hammer Drill Performance

Hilti Nuron 22V Cordless Hammer Drill SF 6H-22

Out of the gate, the SF 6H-22 is Hilti’s high-performance Power Class model for the Nuron lineup. That model number may look familiar to you if you’ve been around Hilti very long. The SF 6H-A22 is the model that this one replaces. Here’s a quick comparison of the two drills:

The previous model was no slouch and picking up some additional torque without losing any speed only helps matters. It’s even able to drill with a 2 9/16-inch self-feed bit through SPF studs in high gear. Here are the recommended max capacities:

  • Masonry Twist Bit: 14mm (9/16 in.)
  • Metal Twist Bit: 13mm (1/2 in.)
  • Wood Hole Saw: 127mm (5 in.)
  • Wood Auger or Spade Bits: 32mm (1 1/4 in.)
  • Screws in Metal: 6.3mm (1/4 in.)

Size and Weight

Hilti SF 6H-22 Profile

As part of Hilti’s Power class, the SF 6H-22 has a pretty robust profile. With a B 22-85 battery, it stands just over 10 inches tall and measures 8.25 inches from tip to tail. Hilti did manage to shave off about half an inch from the tool width making it just a little bit slimmer than the SF 6H-A22.

As a bare tool, the weight is exactly the same as the previous model at 3.7 pounds. For light-to-medium duty work, the 4.0Ah battery is the way to go, bringing the total weight up to 5.4 pounds.

Ergonomics

Hilti Nuron Cordless Hammer Drill

As you’d expect from any professional-grade model, this drill features a textured rubber overmold grip that contours nicely and feels good in your hand. Plus, the addition of larger rubber grooves helps channel away sweat.

Active Torque Control

Hilti Nuron SF 6H-22 Cordless Hammer Drill ATC

Hilti equipped the SF 6H-22hammer drill with Active Torque Control (ATC) technology. This helps to prevent the tool from uncontrolled spinning if the drill bit binds up. The drill’s motor automatically shuts off when the sensor picks up a quick twist of the tool body.

Nuron Benefits

From there, we need to take a closer look at Nuron’s specific benefits. With the updated battery design, we expect longer runtime, especially when you need to keep the drill under a heavier load for longer periods of time. Part of it is the 21700 cell selection, part of it is the cooling technology inside, and part is the resistance reduction of the electrical connections. All of that works together to power the drill more efficiently than before.

For those of you managing an entire tool crib, the batteries’ ability to automatically store and transmit data about the tool and battery is a huge help in making your management duties more efficient. Even if You’re using multiple tools with one battery, it stores the data and transmits it via the charger when you put it on.

There’s a lot more to the Nuron story, so check out our deeper dive here.

Editor’s Note: Think you know everything? Our How to Use a Drill article might still manage to show you a thing or two. Also check out our best cordless drill article for our top picks.

Additional Features

  • All-metal 1/2-inch chuck
  • Rubber tool bumpers
  • Efficient airflow to cool the tool during use
  • LED light

Hilti Nuron 22V Cordless Hammer Drill Price

The Hilti SF 6H-22 starts at $199 for the bare tool. That’s $10 less than the model it replaces while including the upgraded benefits Nuron offers. This drill is backed by Hilti’s 20-year warranty.

With Hilti’s sales model, you can essentially build your own kit from there. Here’s the breakdown of your battery and charger options:

Compatible Batteries

  • 2.5Ah (B22 55-22): $99.75 each (compatible, but with limited runtime)
  • 4.0 Ah (B22 85-22): $136.00 each (best for keeping the weight down)
  • 8.0 Ah (B22 170-22): $207.00 each (best for long-duration applications)
  • 12.0 Ah (B22 255-22): $243.00 each (compatible, but not recommended due to high weight)

Compatible Chargers

  • Hilti C 4-22 (91W) Compact Charger: $43.75
  • Hilti C 6-22 (241W) Fast Charger: $84 (unavailable at the time of writing)

The Bottom Line

From dilling 1/2-inch holes with a masonry bit to using 5-inch hole saws, the Hilti Nuron Nuron SF 6H-22 cordless hammer drill has a broad resume. Even if Hilti decides to bring a more powerful hammer drill to the Nuron lineup, this model will be the workhorse thanks to its combination of size and performance.

Kobalt 24V Cordless Hammer Drill and Drill Driver Increase Power, Decrease Size

Kobalt’s next generation of 24V cordless tools is rolling out at Lowe’s. We wanted to see what’s different, where these tools fit, and who they’re designed for. Up first is the Kobalt 24V cordless hammer drill and its drill driver version.

Kobalt 24V Cordless Hammer Drill Performance

Kobalt 24V Cordless Hammer Drill and Drill Review

Kobalt has two major lines on the shelves at Lowe’s: a high-value standard line and a high-performance XTR line. The latest tools are taking over for the standard line.

Old Vs New

Here’s a quick overview of the updated hammer drill performance compared to the previous model:

KHD 524B-03KHD 124B-03 (Next-Gen)
No-Load Speed0-550/0-2,000 RPM0-550/0-2,000 RPM
Max Hammering Rate26,000 BPM32,000 BPM
Clutch Settings2424
Max Torque650 in-lbs850 in-lbs
Chuck Size1/2 in.1/2 in.

Now let’s take a look at the drill driver specs:

KDD 524B-03KDD 124B-03 (Next-Gen)
No-Load Speed0-550/0-2,000 RPM0-550/0-2,000 RPM
Clutch Settings2424
Max Torque650 in-lbs850 in-lbs
Chuck Size1/2 in.1/2 in.

Comparing the two generations, only two changes stand out, but they’re significant. The extra 200 in-lbs of torque the Kobalt 24V cordless hammer drill and drill driver get is more than 30% better. You don’t have to look back too many years when 850 in-lbs was the highest torque any brushless Pro-level drill was reaching.

The other change is only on the hammer drill. Its shift from a blow rate of 24,000 BPM to 32,000 BPM is a 23% improvement and should make concrete drilling noticeably faster.

We’ve only had these tools for a brief time and we’ll be putting them through a series of comparative tests. We’ll update this review as soon as we have those results.

Kobalt 24V Cordless Hammer Drill Price

One of the good things about these drills is that you get additional performance without a big jump in price to match it. The drill kit is $139 with a 2.0Ah battery. The hammer drill is $129 as a bare tool.

These tools just launched today (as we’re writing), so we’ll have to wait and see if any additional bare tool or kit options show up.

Regardless, Kobalt has your back with a 5-year warranty on the tools and 3 years on batteries.

The Bottom Line

The next generation Kobalt 24V cordless hammer drill and drill driver benefit from improved torque and a more compact design. The changes come without a big jump in price, keeping them in the high-value category. While Kobalt is targeting serious DIYers and Prosumers with this line, the price and performance are sure to catch the eyes of value-minded Pros as well.

The Bosch Core18V GSB18V-975 Hammer Drill Improves Power And Performance

Bosch is one of the quieter brands in the power tool industry, but they make excellent tools. While they tend to trail others in development, two updated hammer drills are signaling a resurgence toward competitive performance. We got our hands on the Bosch GSB18V-975CN 18V hammer drill to see what the newest generation has in store for you.

Bosch Core18V Hammer Drill Performance

Bosch GSB18V-975CN 18V Hammer Drill

Bosch starts with a brushless motor and pairs it with Core18V batteries to produce up to 975 in-lbs of torque and 2100 RPM. In hammer drill mode, you can add 31,500 BPM to the mix.

Considering the last Bosch hammer drill we tested moved up to 755 in-lbs of torque, this is a nice improvement. However, it’s not the strongest model Bosch has. They also released a 1330 in-lbs model that creates a new flagship for the toughest jobs. While the price difference between the two is only $30, the higher-performance model comes with an extra pound of weight.

Mode Selection

Gearbox and Mode Selection

This drill features a 25-position clutch and a 2-speed gearbox that allow you to take on a variety of drilling and driving tasks. They also moved the mode selection switch away from the clutch collar which makes it easier to switch between hammer, drilling, and driving modes in our opinion.

Kickback Control

One of the more innovative features of this hammer drill is the customizable kickback control. When connected to the Bosch Toolbox app you can even adjust the tool’s kickback sensitivity. While Bosch isn’t a newcomer to kickback control, the smart connected controls over it are a recent innovation.

Like many drills that have this feature, the motor automatically shuts down when it senses the bit bind, and the drill twists about 90°. Adjusting the sensitivity will either stop rotation earlier or later than 90° base on your preferences.

Bosch Core18V Hammer Drill Design Notes

Ergonomics

Bosch GSB18V-975CN 18V Hammer Drill

From tip to tail this hammer drill measures just under 8 inches and stands 10.25 inches tall with a Core18V 6.3Ah battery attached. In total, this hammer drill weighs 3.6 pounds bare and 5.4 pounds with the same battery, making it an excellent option for heavy-duty all-day drilling.

Bosch grip designs are a fan favorite around our office. They are slightly larger than most others on the market but the general shape contours nicely in the palm of your hand. Plus, there are a few larger grooves on the front and back of the grip to help channel away sweat from your palm and fingers.

Tool Connectivity

Connected Module Install

Smart tools and tool connectivity are the way of the future from what we see in the industry. Bosch is no different and engineered a quarter-sized compartment on the side of the handle that accepts their battery-powered Bluetooth Tool Module.

The module connects to Bosch’s Toolbox app that offers a 100-foot range. It allows you to fine-tune your drill’s kickback control settings, monitor tool and battery statuses, and keep tabs on your equipment with tool-asset inventory management.

Additional Features

  • LED light
  • Metal belt hook

Bosch Core18V Hammer Drill Price

The Bosch GSB18V-975CN retails for $169 as a bare tool. Even though it doesn’t come with a battery, Bosch does include an adjustable side handle, a belt hook, as well as a few bits to get you started.

At the time we’re writing this, there is no kit option available so be sure to pick up a battery and charger if you’re not already on the Bosch 18V platform. Remember you’ll get the best performance with Core18V batteries.

Bosch backs the drill and battery with a 3-year limited warranty.

The Bottom Line

We’re going to go out on a limb and say the GSB18V-975CN is the best cordless hammer in Bosch’s lineup. While it’s not the strongest, it balances performance and weight while giving you all the best features Bosch has to offer.
