Gearwrench 40-Piece Tap and Die Sets

GearWrench Tap and Die Sets Innovate

We’ve used a variety of tap and die sets over the years. GearWrench has two 40-piece tap and die sets that look very handy for cutting new threads. The two kits give you the option of cutting threads in either SAE or Metric. Gearwrench makes these kits available in several sizes and configurations. You can grab an individual SAE or metric kit, or you can opt for a more expensive hybrid system that tackles both. We prefer having two around the shop—though we haven’t gotten these specific kits in for hands-on testing.

Our Take on the GearWrench 40-Pc Tap and Die Sets

The GearWrench 3885 SAE 40-Piece Tap and Die Set ($112.99) and the GearWrench 3886 Metric 40-Piece Tap and Die Set ($99.99) provide nearly everything you could possibly need for making new threads, transforming a metal rod into a bolt, or tapping out a new hole.

The 3885 and 3886 give you ratcheting tap and die cutting with some helpful tools. Both sets include GearWrench’s patented Twist Lock Guide System. This feature reduces the back walk of the die guard.

The ratcheting T wrench features a 5° ratcheting arc with a reversible lever that eliminates hand-over-hand turning. Having done this with the other tools—you should get a much easier bit on your threads with this system. Next, an auto-locking feature lets you remove the tap adapters safely. Finally, a spring-loaded cap allows a quick release of the large tap adapter.

Both of the sets feature die adapters that work with the GearWrench Pass-Thru ratchet and socket system, as well as Vortex socket adapters. The die adapters work on round and hex shaped dies. Extension adapters give you easier access into tight and confined spaces.

Each of the sets includes a T wrench, a medium adapter, a medium hex die adapter, 17 taps, and 17 dies. Each includes a blow mold case as well.

Pricing

You can pick up the GearWrench 40-Piece SAE Tap and Die Set for $112.99. The Metric edition of the set retails for $99.99. Both come with a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects (on the tools—the taps and dies are not covered according to the Gearwrench website). We did note some model confusion on the Gearwrench website and other retailers, with some SKUs showing up as 42-piece sets and others showing 40-piece. When we get one or both of these in for review we hope to clear up any confusion.

I have the Metric set. The “Lifetime Warranty” that you mention is useless because the individual taps and dies are specifically excluded. Here’s a link to the Gearwrench Warranty page so you can see for yourself: https://www.gearwrench.com/warranty.
