Milwaukee Expands Woodworking Line With M18 Cordless 1/4-Sheet Orbital Sheet Sander

There aren’t many areas where Milwaukee’s cordless lineup isn’t as deep, but cordless sanders are one of them. That’s beginning to change as the Milwaukee M18 Cordless Orbital 1/4-Sheet Sander joins the brand’s expanding selection of cordless woodworking tools.

Milwaukee M18 Orbital Sheet Sander Performance

Material Removal

Milwaukee M18 Cordless Orbital 1/4-Sheet Sheet Sander

This orbital sander uses an M18 battery to power the brushed motor between 11,000 and 13,000 oscillations per minute with a 1.6mm orbit diameter. That’s a somewhat narrower operating range than we’ve seen on some models and it has a slightly lower top speed.

However, we don’t have any complaints about our material removal rates. Paired with 60-grit sandpaper, it can keep up just fine.

To turn the sander on, flip the power switch on the front of the housing. Speed adjustments are also easy with a dial around the left side towards the back. Both are easily in reach while you’re sanding.

Dust Collection

Dust Collection

Milwaukee tells us the M18 sheet sander’s integrated dust collection bag gathers up to 95% of the dust output you create while in use. It also features a universal hose adapter so that you can hook up a vacuum hose for even better dust containment.

We did have the opportunity to use it extensively on our 2×4 bench build. Even without connecting it to a dust extractor, we saw less dust than we expected considering how much sanding we were doing.

Runtime

Milwaukee tells us that when paired with a 5.0Ah battery you can expect to get up to 40 minutes of continuous runtime, depending on your sanding speed. During our testing, we used a 3.0Ah High Output battery at high speed and swapped batteries after about 25 minutes of sanding time.

Milwaukee M18 Orbital Sheet Sander Design Notes

Ergonomics

Milwaukee M18 Cordless 1/4-Sheet Orbital Sheet Sander 2649

With a 5.0Ah battery, this sander weighs a very reasonable 4.4 pounds. If you go with a smaller pack like we did, you can shave the weight down a bit more. While it’s heavier than its corded counterparts, the weight isn’t a significant concern for a handheld sander of this size.

Overall, Milwaukee doesn’t stray from the foundations of a good sander design. The rounded top easily contours to your palm and the rubber overmold helps you easily maintain your grip, even if your hands are sweaty.

The front of the sander recesses in and offers a secondary grip location. With the vibration that a sander produces, it’s nice to have multiple grip locations as you’re switching between one-hand and two-hand use for longer tasks.

Sandpaper

Sandpaper Clamp

As a 1/4-sheet sander, the Milwaukee 2649 sticks with a traditional paper clamp system over the hook and loop (Velcro) connections you find on other sander styles. Just use the clamp in the front to hold one edge and set the back edge using the wire clamp.

It’s easiest to use pre-punched 1/4-sheet sandpaper, but that’s not always what you have on hand. Whether you’re cutting down larger sheets, have 1/4 sheets without holes, or it has a different pattern, there’s a hole punch in the box. To use it, clamp your paper in place, clip the punch on and press in to get the correct hole pattern.

Milwaukee M18 Orbital Sheet Sander Price

The Milwaukee 2649 retails for $149 as a bare tool and $329 as a kit. The kit includes a 5.0Ah battery and charger. Both options are backed by a 5-year tool warranty and a 3-year battery warranty.

The Bottom Line

The Milwaukee M18 Orbital Sheet Sander is proof that you can cut the cord without sacrificing material-removing performance. The design is solid and while the runtime might benefit from a brushless motor, it’s an excellent addition to Milwaukee’s cordless woodworking lineup.

Are you a fan of Milwaukee tools? Be sure to keep stay tuned to see what’s coming down the Pipeline.

Hilti Nuron Cordless Angle Grinder Line Anchored By Intelligent 6-Inch Model

With its 6-cell system and upgraded tech, Hilti Nuron is redefining what you can expect from its 21.6-volt system. Anchoring the grinder line, the Hilti Nuron AG 6D-22 cordless 6-inch angle grinder opened our eyes.

Pros

  • 6-inch grinder performance using a single 22V battery
  • Lighter and more compact than cordless competitors
  • Nuron diagnostic and reporting technology built-in
  • 360° Active Vibration Control
  • SensTech combines slide switch convenience with paddle switch safety
  • Electronic wheel brake

Cons

  • Wheel lock button can be a bit awkward to hold down

Hilti Nuron Cordless 6-Inch Angle Grinder AG 6D-22 Performance

Surface Grinding

Hilti impressed us by powering a 6-inch grinder with a brushless motor and a single 22-volt battery. While the 6-cell system does have an extra cell per row compared to the 5-cell 18V/20V Max packs, most brands moving into the medium angle grinder class are doing it with 36V/40V Max or 54V/60V Max voltage levels.

For cutting and grinding, you have up to 8500 RPM at your disposal. Because of the single 22V power source, you get that performance with less weight than some of the other options.

The cutting performance is excellent, though we can tell that some of the higher voltage systems have more torque in reserve. Even so, it takes some effort to bog down Hilti’s brushless motor, and the majority of your grinding, cutting, and polishing tasks are just as easy and fast as you can work with other cordless options.

Hilti Nuron Cordless 6-Inch Angle Grinder Design

360° Active Torque Control

Hilti’s performance is impressive, but the new intelligence redefines angle grinder safety completely. It starts with 360° Active Torque Control. Effectively, the tool now senses your full working area and if it quickly leaves that zone in any direction, the motor shuts off.

SensTech

Another innovative element is SensTech. It’s a sensor in the handle that can tell when you have control of the tool. If you drop it, set it down, or take your hand off for any other reason, the motor shuts down. Thanks to this technology, you have the always-on convenience of a slide switch with the deadman function of a paddle switch—it’s the best of both worlds!

Additional Nuron Benefits

One of the Nuron system’s benefits improved the overall performance of each tool with a better pack design allowing for more efficient energy flow. It also shifts away from a separate 36V system for higher-draw tools and goes with a 2 x 22V design so the same batteries support both performance tiers.

New technology is also built into the system. As you use a Nuron tool, diagnostic and use information stores on the battery pack and can be uploaded when you place it on the charger. That might not be a big deal for individual tradesmen, but it’s a big time-saver for crib managers working with maintenance schedules and asset management.

Size and Weight

Without a battery, the grinder only weighs 4.6 pounds. With the B 22-170 battery (2P pack, 8.0Ah), the total weight is 7.5 pounds.

The tool is also just 11.8 inches long and your battery selection will determine the total length. Regardless, it’s more compact than DeWalt’s FlexVolt grinder. It’s close as a bare tool but adds more length and weight with its battery.

Additional Highlights

  • Slim, compact design
  • 2-position side handle
  • Electronic overheating and overload protection
  • Wheel brake
  • Compatible with DG-EX 125/5 and DC-EX 125/5 M dust hoods

Hilti Nuron Cordless 6-Inch Angle Grinder AG 6D-22 Price

Hilti’s 6-Inch Nuron angle grinder starts at $297 for the bare tool and you can build out a configuration specific to your needs from there. If you’re on Hilti’s fleet program, each AG 6D-22 is $9.50 per month. Here are the compatible batteries and chargers:

Battery Selection

  • 2.50Ah (B 22-54): $89.00 each (okay for short-duration tasks)
  • 3.95 Ah (B 22-85): $121 each (best balance of performance and weight)
  • 7.90Ah (B 22-170): $185 each (best for higher performance and runtime)
  • 11.85Ah (B 22-255): $217 each (not recommended due to higher weight)

Chargers

  • Hilti C 4-22 (91W) Compact Charger: $39
  • Hilti C 6-22 (241W) Fast Charger: $84

As usual, Hilti backs this grinder with its 20-2-1 warranty program.

The Bottom Line

The Hilti Nuron 6-inch cordless angle grinder redefines safety and convenience expectations for this class of power tool. While there are models that can reach higher performance, The AG 6D-22 is no slouch and the advantages Nuron offers makes it one of the best grinders you can get your hands on.

Next-Gen Ridgid 18V Cordless Angle Grinder Pushes Performance Forward

Ridgid is coming in strong this year with a fresh batch of updated tools and among them is an updated Ridgid 18V cordless 4 1/2-inch angle grinder. We’re going to break down the key details and give you a first-hand look at what makes this grinder worth considering.

Want more angle grinders? Check out our top recommendations!

Ridgid 18V Cordless Angle Grinder Performance

Triggered

Ridgid 18V 4 1/2-Inch Cordless Angle Grinder R86047

There’s a lot of debate in the tool industry over paddle triggers vs slide switches on angle grinders. I tend to prefer a paddle trigger simply because I feel like I have greater control of the tool but that’s just my preference. On the other hand, Kenny likes a slide switch.

For this model, Ridgid goes with a large paddle switch that spans the majority of the grip. This gives you the opportunity for multiple hand positions to best suit your needs. Just like other paddle switch tools, there’s a spring-loaded safety for added security during transport.

Once you activate the paddle switch, the Ridgid R86047’s brushless motor spins its 4 1/2-inch grinding wheel up to 9,000 RPM.

Let’s Talk Power

Ridgid 18V 4 1/2-Inch Cordless Angle Grinder R86047

Ridgid doesn’t provide an exact corded equivalent for this angle grinder, but from our experience, it feels and performs very similarly to a 9-amp model. During our testing, we were able to really put some good pressure on it, but it’s not too difficult to slow it down compared to larger cordless angle grinder options.

In terms of application, the Ridgid R86047 is really helpful for light to medium-duty applications such as knocking off rust/paint, polishing, and cutting frozen nuts and bolts. It can reach into some of the tougher applications, but those are the kinds of things you want to move up to a larger, stronger class for the best productivity.

Ridgid 18V Cordless Angle Grinder Design

Ergonomics

Handle Profile

Overall, we really like the ergonomics of this angle grinder. The rubber overmolded grip section is slim and very comfortable in my hands.

Its 5.8-pound weight (including a 4.0Ah Max Output battery) is very manageable and similar to corded small angle grinders.

From tip to tail this angle grinder measures 13.3 inches. While it’s not labeled as a “compact” tool, it is highly maneuverable and excellent in tight spaces.

Electric Brake

Ridgid includes an electric braking mechanism that quickly stops the wheel’s rotation in a matter of seconds once you release the switch.

On Guard

Guard Adjustment

One nice thing about this grinder is the simple tool-free guard adjustments. To rotate, simply press down on the spring-loaded button and move it into the position that keeps you from getting a spark shower.

One thing to note is that there’s no cut-off wheel shroud. The guard that comes with it is perfectly capable of pulling double duty, and it’s not unusual for small angle grinders to only include one style.

Accessory Changes

Ridgid 18V 4 1/2-Inch Cordless Angle Grinder R86047

One thing I really love about this angle grinder is how Ridgid simplified the flange nut. There’s a built-in folding tab that flips up to give you a better grip and loosen/tighten by hand. We love any option that lets us leave the spanner wrench in the toolbox.

2-Position Side Handle

As with most grinders, the Ridgid R86047 has a 2-position forward assist handle. It gives you a much more stable grip as well as helps to dampen some of the vibrations felt during use.

Ridgid 18V Cordless Angle Grinder Price

The Ridgid R86047 retails for $159 as a bare tool at your local Home Depot or online. It includes the tool, type 27 grinding wheel, guard, side handle, and manual.

Ridgid backs this grinder with its lifetime service agreement when you register within 90 days of purchase.

The Bottom Line

After using the updated Ridgid 18V cordless angle grinder, it’s pretty hard not to like. It’s a great fit for lighter jobs and tight spaces when the size, weight, and power of medium and large angle grinders are overkill.

Milwaukee M18 Fuel Cordless Belt Sander Targets Fast Material Removal

Many cordless tools on the market today are able to replace their corded counterparts. Since cordless tools are more convenient than dealing with power cords at every jobsite, it makes sense that Pros want the corded level of performance they’re used to in a cordless body. Milwaukee’s M18 Fuel Belt Sander is the company’s solution to replace corded belt sanders. Check out the details and see if it has what you need to cut the cord.

Milwaukee M18 Fuel Cordless Belt Sander: The Big Deal

Milwaukee M18 Fuel Cordless Belt Sander

Milwaukee designed this belt sander with professionals in mind. While some cordless options opt for a brushed motor, Milwaukee turns to its brushless PowerState motor for better performance and runtime. Whether you’re a carpenter, remodeler, or even a Nothing But Heavy-Duty DIYer, this cordless belt sander is meant to replace your corded version with power equivalent to an 8-amp corded belt sander.

This tool has a variable speed dial with five different belt speed settings. You can control your material removal rate with speeds ranging from 700 to 1,350 surface feet per minute. A lock-on button lets you focus on the work without worrying about keeping a finger on the trigger.

Milwaukee didn’t estimate a runtime for us. However, having a few 6.0Ah High Output batteries on-hand should give you more than enough trigger time to power through most jobs.

The Milwaukee 2832 includes a dust collection system, too. On top of the integrated universal vacuum hose adapter, the tool comes with a multi-layer dist collection bag. This dust collection method helps you maintain a tidy work area, collecting more than 80% of dust during use.

One cool feature is an adjustable pommel on the front. It doesn’t require any tools to move as you shift it forward or back to get the best feel for the job at hand.

Additional Features

  • Dual LED light
  • Compact design for working in tight spaces
  • Belt tracking knob
  • Tool-free belt changes

First Impressions

We got some hands-on time with this tool and immediately went to work on some 3/4-inch plywood sub-flooring. Half-expecting it to drop somewhat in speed as I bore down, my eyes widened as I pushed harder and harder. This tool, very much like the Milwaukee M18 FUEL braking grinder, doesn’t bog down when you run it hard.

Milwaukee M18 Fuel Belt Sander

I took off about 1/4-inches of material across several inches in just a few seconds using a 60-grit belt. This tool is a beast! The belt tracking works really well and I quickly changed the blade using the tool-free lever mechanism. All in all, this tool looks like an excellent solution for short-term work where you want to cut the cord.

Milwaukee M18 Fuel Cordless Belt Sander Price

The Milwaukee 2832-20 retails for $279 without a battery or charger. In the box, you get one 80-grit sanding belt, a dust collection bag, and a universal vacuum adapter. Milwaukee backs your purchase with a 5-year limited warranty.

There are no kit options, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see some carpentry-specific combos after the sander’s August 2022 launch.

  • Height: 7.5 in

Give Yourself An Extra Hand When Working With Rotary Tools

Rotary tools have so many uses that it’s hard to keep count. The Ryobi Hobby Station is designed to make your rotary tools even more versatile and help you reimagine what you can accomplish.

Ryobi Hobby Station: The Big Deal

Ryobi Hobby Station for Rotary Tools

The biggest and most obvious feature that the Hobby Station provides is the ability to use your tool hands-free. With your rotary tool mounted, you have the option to hold your project in both hands, which improves your control. Furthermore, it has several features that make it stand out.

The Ryobi Hobby Station features a keyless tool change system. To mount a rotary tool to the collar, you simply twist the collar’s rotating base around the tool’s neck to ensure it’s secure.

There’s a lockable height function that helps with routing. There’s also a drill press with a depth stop. You can even turn the tool connection up to 90° to the right for off-angle techniques.

Ryobi Hobby Station for Rotary Tools

The baseplate of the station is reversible. One side functions as a routing fence joint, and the other side acts as a downdraft to catch dust. On the left side, there’s a vacuum hookup that connects to most standard vacuum hoses. This feature ensures you can easily collect any dust that falls through the downdraft.

Additional Features

  • On-board accessory compartments
  • 2-inch depth gauge
  • Integrated telescoping tool hanger
  • Cord management

Ryobi Hobby Station Price and Availability

The Ryobi Hobby Station is exclusive to The Home Depot, like all Ryobi tools. It is available now for a retail price of $99. Ryobi backs it with a 3-year limited warranty. The package includes the Hobby Station, router fence attachment, and 1 7/8-inch vacuum adapter.

Specifications

  • Model: Ryobi RHS01
  • Depth: 13.4 in
  • Length: 13.4 in
  • Width: 16.05 in
  • Height: 15.85 in
  • Number of pieces: 3

Ryobi 18V One+ Brushless Rotary Makes Accessory Changes A Tool-Free Snap

Rotary tools are super-helpful for a variety of chores and projects, but many of them require a power cord and an outlet. Ryobi is jumping headfirst into the rotary tool class and they’ve looking to upend the traditional powerhouse. We brought in the Ryobi 18V One+ Brushless Rotary Tool to see where it fits as they build out a complete lineup.

Using The Ryobi 18V One+ Brushless Rotary Tool

Performance

One of the big deals about Ryobi’s PBLRT01 is that it has a brushless motor. That’s going to give you more runtime, a boost in performance, and longer life than a brushed motor doing the same job.

The variable speed dial adjusts from 5,000 to 25,000 RPMs in 5,000 RPM increments. This lets you set an appropriate speed for the material or accessory you’re working with, or gain more control on those precision projects. It’s also compatible with Ryobi’s foot control pedal if you want variable speed control while keeping both hands free.

Speed Dial

Tool-Free Accessory Changes

The Ryobi brushless rotary tool features a Quick-Change 1/8-inch collet that makes switching between accessories a breeze. The best part? No wrench required! Press down the spindle lock detent and twist the collet counterclockwise, insert the bit, and turn back clockwise until you hear the collet stop clicking.

Ryobi 18V One+ Brushless Rotary Tool PBLRT01B

It is possible to overdo it, though. If you find the collet isn’t opening back up, turn it to the unlock position, unscrew it from the top, and insert a bit from the bottom up. That’s the easiest way we’ve found to open it back up.

Just in case your fingers aren’t as strong as they used to be, there’s also a wrench to help you out.

Accessories

Ryobi Rotary Tool Accessories

The Ryobi brushless rotary tool collet accepts most standard rotary tool accessories and it comes with a 40-piece set to give you a head start. Here’s what’s in the box:

  • 3/8-inch aluminum oxide grinding stone: 1 pc.
  • 3/16-inch silicon carbide grinding stone: 1 pc.
  • 1/2-inch felt polishing wheel: 2 pc.
  • 1-inch felt polishing wheel: 2 pc.
  • 3/4-inch carbon steel brush: 1 pc.
  • Polishing paste: 1 pc.
  • Tapered screw mandrel: 1 pc.
  • 1/4-inch sanding mandrel: 1 pc.
  • 1/2-inch sanding mandrel: 1 pc.

  • 1/4-inch 120-grit sanding band: 3 pc.
  • 1/2-inch 60-grit sanding band: 4 pc.
  • 1/2-inch 120-grit sanding band: 4 pc.
  • 1/2-inch 240-grit sanding band: 4 pc.

Ryobi Brushless Rotary Tool Design Notes

Ergonomics

The precision handpiece uses durable aluminum for its construction to reduce weight. I really like the size and weight of the handpiece—it feels similar to gripping a large Sharpie permanent marker. It’s the pen-type grip that gives you more precise control than standard rotary tool designs.

Using the Ryobi 18V One+ Brushless Rotary Tool PBLRT01B

Its 36-inch flexible shaft puts a little distance between your hand and the motor, helping to reduce the vibration in your hand compared to traditional all-in-one rotary tools.

Pro Tip: Yes, it looks like a dentist’s tool. No, don’t use it like one. DIY dentistry never ends well.

Additional Features

  • Integrated hanger
  • Molded keyholes for secure wall mounting

The rotary tool retails for $149 as a bare tool. It’s $179 as kit which includes a single 2.0Ah 18V High-Performance battery and charger, plus you get the foot pedal. Considering it’s only $30 more to complete the full set, we recommend going the kit route.

Ryobi backs it with a 3-year warranty as well as a 90-day money-back guarantee.

The Bottom Line

With several Ryobi rotary tools available, we set out to discover where this one fits. As the only brushless model, it’s the high-performance king of the hill. Thanks to its precision handpiece, it’s also an excellent choice for detail work. There may be some times when you’d rather have an all-in-one handheld tool rather than the separation of a cable. For everything else, this is Ryobi’s best rotary tool.

Ridgid Raises Performance With New Brushless Angle Grinder

When using an angle grinder, you want something that’s going to have the power to get the job done quickly and efficiently. Ridgid tells us that its 18V Brushless Angle Grinder (R86047B) delivers better performance than its predecessor.

Ridgid 18V 4 1/2-Inch Brushless Angle Grinder: The Big Deal

Ridgid 18V Brushless 4 1/2-Inch Angle Grinder R86047

There are a few notable aspects that differentiate the Ridgid R86047B brushless angle grinder from its previous 18V Octane model. For starters, it has a 9,000 RPM output compared to the 10,000 RPM we saw from Octane, which may seem like a step down in performance. However, Ridgid tells us it actually has 25% more power, so expect tough cuts and grinds to be easier for the updated tool. Remember to use Max Output batteries to get the peak performance.

Ridgid 18V Brushless 4 1/2-Inch Angle Grinder R86047

It also changes over to a paddle switch, as opposed to the sliding switch on the previous model. It’s a nod toward safety. As soon as you let go of the paddle switch, the wheel quickly stops rotating using an electronic brake mechanism.

Another noteworthy upgrade is the tool-free wheel changes. We’re beginning to see more of these trickle onto angle grinders, and it’s so nice to ditch the spanner wrench completely!

Additional Features

  • Multi-position side handle
  • Tool-free guard adjustment
  • Compatible with all Ridgid 18V batteries
  • Includes angle grinder, type 27 grinding wheel, guard, side handle, and operator’s manual

Price and Availability

This tool has a retail price of $159 for the bare tool (the battery and charger are sold separately). It will be available in May 2022 exclusively at The Home Depot. If you register within 90 days, you qualify for Ridgid’s Lifetime Service Agreement.

Makita 40V max XGT System Powers Innovative Large Angle Grinder

Nearly every manufacturer that has a cordless system makes at least one angle grinder for it. Moving from the small angle grinder class to the large angle grinder class is no easy feat, though. The Makita 40V max XGT 9-inch angle grinder pulls it off using just one battery and several innovative technologies.

Makita 40V max XGT 9-Inch Angle Grinder | The Big Deal

Only the elite play in the cordless large angle grinder class, so the fact that Makita’s GAG10 is there so early in line’s development is a big deal in itself. Using a 7 or 9-inch wheel, the brushless motor drives up to 6600 RPM using a single 40V max XGT battery.

Makita 40V max XGT 9-Inch Angle Grinder GAG10

Despite using such a high-mass wheel, Makita dialed in an electronic brake to add an element of safety and productivity. Within 4.5 seconds, a 9-inch wheel comes to a complete stop when you release the paddle switch.

Closely related, there’s kickback control, too. Active Feedback-sensing Technology senses a bind-up and shuts the motor down.

This is also an AWS-capable tool. Add the AWS chip, pair it with an AWS-enabled vacuum (or use the AWS universal adapter), and the vac kicks on as soon as you activate the grinder. It’s helpful across many applications, but perhaps best when you’re working on concrete.

Additional Highlights

  • Anti-restart protection prevents accidental start-up when you insert a battery
  • Vibration-absorbing back handle
  • Soft start
  • Tool-free quick guard rotation
  • Spiral bevel gears create smoother rotation and more efficient energy transfer
  • Reinforced metal gear housing
  • Wire mesh intake covers
  • Extreme Protection Technology design
  • Compatible with all Makita 40V max XGT batteries

Look for the Makita GAG10 at your favorite retailer for $309 as a bare tool or $469 as a kit. The kit includes the grinder, a 4.0Ah battery, single-port Rapid Optimum Charger, and a soft bag. Makita warranties the tool and battery for 3 years.

Let Our Team Help You Sort Through the Multitude of Excellent Angle Grinder Choices

When we set out to determine the best angle grinder, it didn’t seem like a terribly difficult task. However, when we got our team together, it was quickly apparent that there are so many outstanding models out there. Angle grinders are a core tool and nearly every brand makes multiple models.

While we’ve done our best to narrow things down based on our experience, we haven’t been able to put our hands on every model out there. So if you have a grinder you love, let us and your fellow readers know what makes it stand out in the comments section.

How to Choose the Right Angle Grinder

Choosing the right angle grinder for the job is mainly about size and performance. With three primary angle grinder classes (small, medium, and large), it’s all about which size wheel fits in the area you need to grind, cut, or polish.

When the wheel contacts the material, it then has to get the job done. An underpowered grinder might cut 1/4-inch steel plate or grind welds, but higher-performing ones are going to do it much more quickly.

From there, it’s about convenience and features. By far the most convenient way to go is to cut the cord and use battery power. The best cordless angle grinders keep up with corded models—even up to 9-inch models! The trade-off is a higher cost and limited runtime. On the other hand, electronic controls give cordless grinders some features that aren’t common on corded ones.

Here are some other features to look consider:

  • Electronic braking
  • Automatic kickback shut-off
  • Advanced vibration control system
  • Compatible shrouds for working with concrete/masonry
  • Brushless motor (on cordless and corded models)
  • Smart controls/tracking
  • Three total side handle install points

Read up on angle grinder uses and how cordless technology is influencing them here.

The Best Angle Grinder Overall | Our Top Pick

DeWalt 60V Max FlexVolt 6-Inch Angle Grinder DCG418

best DeWalt FlexVolt 60V Max angle grinder review

At the end of the day, the tool you pick up the most is the best for the way you work since you use it so much. The one we pick up more than any other in our shop is DeWalt’s second-generation FlexVolt angle grinder. It has the performance (13-amp equivalent, 9000 RPM) and safety features we demand (kickback control and electronic brake) with the convenience of cordless operation.

One of the other things that sets it apart from high-performance grinders in its class is the ergonomics of its handle design. It’s a slim profile with a trigger rather than a paddle or slide switch.

Price: $229.00 bare, $319.00 (1 x 3.0Ah battery) and $469.00 (2 x 3.0Ah battery) kit options

The Best Cordless Angle Grinder

With DeWalt taking the top spot overall, that model is also our number 1 pick as the best cordless angle grinder. Here are three more options we highly recommend:

The Best Cordless Small Angle Grinder (4-Inch and 5-Inch)

Milwaukee M18 Fuel 5-Inch Angle Grinder with One-Key 2883/2882

best Milwaukee M18 Fuel Braking Angle Grinder with One-Key Review 2883

Milwaukee’s latest flagship small angle grinder has outstanding power with the brake and kickback control we’re looking for. Capable of using 4 1/2 or 5-inch wheels, both styles have a top speed of 8500 RPM.

The 2883 (slide lock) and 2882 (paddle switch) also include One-Key. While there are no control settings, it does offer tracking and inventory management, making it a great option for construction firms and shops that prefer help tracking tools from the crib.

Price: $219 bare, $469 kit (2 x 6.0Ah High Output battery)

The Best Cordless Medium Angle Grinder (6-Inch)

Bosch Spitfire ProFactor 18V Connected-Ready X-Lock 6-Inch Angle Grinder GWX18V-13CN

Best Bosch angle grinder

Bosch has a lot going on with their GWX18V-13CN angle grinder. It’s capable of using wheels from 5 to 6 inches and using the completely tool-free X-Lock interface, you can kiss your spanner wrench goodbye! As a 13-amp corded equivalent, the grinder’s BiTurbo brushless motor spins up to 8500 RPM.

In addition to electronic brake, kickback control, drop control, and restart protection features, this model is also Connected-Ready. Just add the Bosch Connected Module to gain smart tracking and diagnostic communication.

This grinder is also available without X-Lock as the GWS18V-13CN.

Price: $249 bare, $399 kit (1 x 8.0Ah Core18V battery)

The Best Cordless Large Angle Grinder (7-Inch and 9-Inch)

Makita 40V max XGT AWS-Capable 9-Inch Angle Grinder GAG10

best Makita angle grinde

The cordless large angle grinder group is ironically very small. Among the major brands, your choices are between Makita, Metabo, and Milwaukee. None of them are poor choices. However, our pick for the best cordless large angle grinder in Makita’s GAG10.

Using a single 40V max XGT battery instead of two 18V batteries for power, it kickback and brake safety features, and adds restart protection along with AWS. Makita’s Autostart Wireless System automatically turns on your vac when you pull the trigger, making this an excellent option for concrete and masonry work in addition to standard metalworking.

On the performance side, expect to run 7 or 9-inch wheels up to 6600 RPM. The tool also has an isolated rear handle to help absorb vibration and reduce fatigue in your hand and arm.

Price: $309 bare, $469 (1 x 4.0Ah battery)

The Best Corded Angler Grinder

In order to get the kickback control and electronic brake we’ve been talking about, the best way to get them is with the electronic controls that come with a brushless motor. In recent years, a couple of brands have introduced corded brushless angle grinders that offer those additional safety features.

That’s a big deal to our team, plus you don’t have carbon brushes to replace. If those features aren’t a big deal to you, you might find the best corded angle grinder for you is something different than what we’re recommending.

The Best Small Angle Grinder (4-Inch and 5-Inch)

Metabo HPT AC Brushless 5-Inch Angle Grinder G13BYEQ

Metabo HPT earns our pick for the best corded small angle grinder with its 5-inch AC brushless G13BYEQ. It uses a 12-amp brushless motor to spin the wheel up to 10,000 RPM. The paddle switch and electronic brake ensure the motor stops quickly if your hand comes off for some reason, and it has the built-in kickback control we prefer on grinders.

Price: $159

The Best Medium Angle Grinder (6-Inch)

DeWalt Brushless 6-Inch Angle Grinder DWE43244N

For your medium size grinder, we like DeWalt’s 5-inch/6-inch DWE43244N. It’s a corded paddle switch grinder that takes advantage of a brushless motor. As part of DeWalt’s Performance & Protect line, it has an electronic clutch with kickback control and an electronic brake.

For those of your working at height, there’s a lanyard attachment hook just below where the cord enters the housing.

Flipping over to the performance, the motor runs 13 amps and produces a solid 1800 watts of power with speeds up to 9000 RPM.

Price: $249

The Best Large Angle Grinder (7-Inch and 9-Inch)

Metabo 9-Inch Angle Grinder WEPB 24-230 MVT

When it’s time to go big, we prefer Metabo for the best corded large angle grinder. In particular, we like the WEPB 24-230 MVT for several reasons. This 15-amp grinder is well-built and can handle wheels up to 9 inches with speeds up to 6600 RPM. Even though it’s not a brushless model, it does have a mechanical disk brake that activates if the deadman switch is released, if the wheel binds up, or even in an unexpected power loss.

The “MVT” designation on this grinder stands for Metabo VibraTech and includes an internal dampening system along with a vibration reduction side handle.

We also really like the rat tail handle design. Grinders of all sizes can have pretty wide handles that small and medium-size hands have a tougher time with. Metabo’s rat tail handle offers a much more ergonomic grip to hands of all sizes.

Price: $359.99

The Best Budget Angle Grinder

Cordless

Ryobi 18V One+ HP Brushless 4 1/2-Inch Angle Grinder PBLAG01

Ryobi made a huge jump in performance with its HP Brushless line of cordless tools and the paddle switch angle grinder of the group is no exception. Paired with a High Performance battery, the brushless motor is capable of 9200 RPM using 4 1/2-inch wheels.

This is one of only a few grinders with a tool-free wheel removal. Ryobi’s FixTec flange nut has a flip-up section you can grab and twist to loosen or tighten with your fingers. If the nut happens to be too tight, there’s a spanner wrench you can use as a backup.

Even though this model is more expensive than some of the more budget-friendly options out there, its performance makes it an excellent value.

Price: $129 bare, $179 kit (1 x 4.0Ah High Performance battery)

Corded

Skil 8-Amp 5-Inch Corded Angle Grinder AG242001

Skil takes your basic grinder needs up a notch with its AG242001. As our top choice for the best corded budget angle grinder, this 5-inch paddle switch grinder is a bit more powerful than its competition with an 8-amp motor producing an impressive 12000 RPM.

It also features three handle positions and the spanner wrench stores right inside the side handle where you’re much less likely to lose it.

Price: $49.99

The Best Angle Grinder Brand

Best Angle Grinder Brand

You can ask professionals which brand makes the best angle grinder and you’ll get a variety of answers. When we look at the grinders consistently doing the toughest jobs, no brand shows up as much as Metabo. The quality of Metabo’s engineering and design along with an incredibly deep line that covers the entire range of grinder needs makes it a top choice time after time. They’re more expensive than other professional brands, but that’s what we expect at this level.

More Options From Brands We Trust

Best Craftsman Angle Grinder

Craftsman’s CMCG450 is a 4 1/2-inch brushless model that’s a solid value at less than $100 for the bare tool. It has performance primarily meeting the needs of serious DIYers and has a 3-position side handle with a spanner wrench that stores conveniently in it.

Price: $99 bare tool

Best Flex Angle Grinder

Even though Flex has been around a long time as a brand, its 24V cordless system is one of the newest on the market. Their 5-inch brushless variable speed grinder doesn’t have a first-gen feel, though. With legitimate Pro-level performance and a comfortable design, kickback control reduces injury risk in a bind-up while the side handle absorbs vibration. It’s also the best value in the professional small angle grinder class.

This grinder is available with a slide switch or a paddle switch.

Price: $179 bare, $199 kit (1 x 5.0Ah battery)

Best HART Tools Angle Grinder

Hart 20V angle grinder

While Ryobi was our pick for the best budget cordless grinder, HART Tools makes a great case as another high-value pick with the HPAG25. Their brushless model boasts the same 9200 RPM as Ryobi and has a three-position side handle. The best part is the price—just $119 as a bare tool.

The downside is that it’s not sold as a kit with a battery and charger. However, you’re going to want more than just the grinder, so grab the brushless drill and impact driver combo to help you get started.

Price: $119 bare

Learn more from Hart Tools.

Best Kobalt Angle Grinder

Kobalt’s top grinder is the cordless brushless KAG 424B-03 (KAG 1724A-03 for the kit). It’s a 5-inch model with a paddle switch design that covers all the basics you need with a couple of bonuses. It has a three-position handle and the spanner wrench stores inside the handle so you have it when you need it.

The biggest story for Kobalt is the performance. The brushless motor and 6-cell 24V max battery system run your grinder wheels up to 8500 RPM with plenty of muscle to back it up.

Price: $129 bare tool, $219 kit (1 x 4.0Ah battery)

Best Porter-Cable Angle Grinder

Porter-Cable is back and Tractor Supply carries the entire line! With corded and cordless options, our top choice is Porter-Cable’s corded 7.5-amp grinder. It uses 4 1/2-inch wheels and has a 3-position side handle. The biggest deal is the price—it runs just $39.99 and has a 3-year warranty, making it one of the best angle grinders if you’re on a budget.

Price: $39.99

Best Ridgid Angle Grinder

Ridgid has several angle grinders to choose from with options on both the corded and cordless sides. If you’re on the hunt for something with a larger wheel and more muscle that doesn’t break the bank, check out the R10202. Its 15-amp motor powers 7-inch wheels up to 8000 RPM.

Not only does this model have a 3-position side handle, but it also has a rotating 3-position rat tail main handle design. No matter which way you’re cutting, you can get both hands in a natural, comfortable position so you can focus on the cut instead of your grip. Plus, this powerful grinder retails under the $150 mark.

Price: $149

The Best Angle Grinder for Wood Carving

Most people don’t think of an angle grinder for wood carving duties, but there are accessories out there specifically for that purpose. One of the most helpful is essentially a wheel with chainsaw teeth on the edge. You can also use flap disks just like you do for metal.

Most of the wood carving wheels are 4 or 4 1/2 inches, so a small angle grinder is your best bet, and we highly recommend a model with kickback control. The trick here is to make sure your grinder isn’t underpowered since this can be a very aggressive application. If you have spare batteries and a rapid charger, cordless can be a convenient option. However, the unlimited runtime of a corded grinder is our preference.

If you don’t already have a grinder in mind, give Metabo HPT’s G13BYEQ as our pick for the best corded small angle grinder.

Price: $259

The Best Angle Grinder for Tile Cutting

If you’re going to cut tile, granite, or other masonry with your angle grinder, you need to use a dust shroud and connect a dust extractor. A collection system keeps the dust from getting into your lungs while also pulling it away from your cutline.

There are several add-on shrouds you can buy that take the place of the grinder’s guard. Our top recommendation is DeWalt’s DWE46125 cutting shroud for small angle grinders ($84). If you’re looking for an all-in-one solution, DeWalt’s DWE46123 includes the cutting shroud with a grinder in one package for $219.

Price: $84 (shroud only), $219 (grinder and shroud)

The Best Angle Grinder for Concrete

Similar to tile cutting, the best angle grinder for concrete has plenty of muscle behind it, a shroud to help collect the dust, and has the unlimited runtime of corded AC power.

Check out Makita’s PC5010CX1 for a 5-inch grinder with a concrete shroud as an all-in-one tool. Its 12-amp motor has 1400 watts of muscle and there’s a vibration-dampening spring system to make the job less fatiguing.

If you’re on the hunt for the absolute best in concrete cutting and polishing on an industrial level, take a look at what US Saws has to offer. The Mark III Dust Buggy is ideal for cleaning out joints. For floor prep, the TC-7 Stand-Up Edger lets you tackle the edges close the walls where your larger concrete polisher isn’t the best option. Incidentally, both use Metabo grinders to get the job done.

Price: $289

The Best Angle Grinder for Cutting Metal

The best angle grinder for cutting metal can be virtually any of the grinders we’ve recommended. It’s all about your expectations for performance, features, and budget. What makes a big difference here is choosing the right accessory for the job.

You have two major options: abrasive wheels or diamond wheels. Abrasive wheels are significantly cheaper, while diamond wheels last much, much longer. If you do a cost-per-cut analysis, diamond wheels end up being a better value if you don’t mind the upfront cost.

If you prefer abrasive cutting wheels, we like the performance and life we get from Makita, and they have both standard and X-Lock wheels available. Another one to keep your eyes on is DeWalt’s Elite Series.

For diamond cutting wheels, it’s tough to beat Diablo for both standard and X-Lock arbors. We also use Lenox MetalMax diamond cutting wheels frequently.

Angle Grinder Safety Tips

Angle grinders can spin up to 10,000 RPM or more. When something goes wrong on the business end, it can be catastrophic, sending shrapnel into your face and body, hurting bystanders, or damaging material and equipment around you. Here are some angle grinder safety tips to prevent it:

  • Always wear eye protection—no excuses!
  • Consider wearing a metalworking apron
  • Wear cut-resistant gloves
  • Never work without a guard in place
  • Use a braking grinder when you can
  • Get a grinder with kickback control
  • Consider a paddle switch instead of an on/off switch
  • Wait until the wheel stops moving before you set the grinder down

How We Make Our Choices

As we considered the dozens of quality grinders available, there were several things we prioritized to help us make our recommendations.

Performance

At the end of the day, performance is still the number one priority. We’re looking for grinders that have enough torque to keep their RPMs high and continue to work quickly when the going gets tough.

Size and Weight

When it’s an option, our team reaches for the lightest, most compact tool that still gets the job done with confidence.

Safety Features

Braking grinders with kickback control are two of the top safety features we look for. Any other innovations that improve safety also earn big bonus points.

Additional Features

After safety features, other design elements that make the job easier help improve a grinder’s overall score.

Price and Value

We’re big on value. It’s not about paying the least amount of money possible, it’s about getting the most you can from the angle grinder that fits the budget you have.

This polisher lets you skip the old-fashioned Mr. Miyagi “wax on, wax off” manual method and step into the 21st century. We put it in the hands of our resident rancher, Eli Mosley, who also happens to be a major league car care enthusiast and deals with maintenance on the vehicles on the ranch. He also happens to be tired of hand waxing.

What is a dual action polisher? Dual action polishers combine forced rotary and orbital motions into one action. The difference between this and a random orbit polisher is that a forced rotation drives both the rotating and orbiting motions. A random orbit polisher only drives orbit and relies on momentum to rotate the pad. A forced rotation dual action orbital polisher has a consistent pattern and therefore produces a better result.

The Ryobi PBF100 uses a brushed motor to deliver 3,000 to 7,500 orbits per minute (8mm throw) with force rotation to give it the dual action designation. The combination of orbital movement with forced rotation helps reduce heat build-up and the potential for swirl marks.

If you’re new to power polishers, here’s a general speed guideline (it’s also printed on the tool):

  • Finishing: 3,000 – 3,800 OPM
  • Correcting: 3,800 – 5,800 OPM
  • Cutting: 5,800 – 7,500 OPM

As Eli put a fresh coat of Brazilian carnauba wax on his truck, the polisher’s finishing pad left a clean path as he worked across the body.

Expect up to 2 hours of runtime using a 9.0Ah battery—enough to cover most full-size vehicles. If you’re using the 4.0Ah battery that comes in the kit, it’s closer to 50 minutes. Even though there’s a big difference between those values, we prefer the 4.0Ah battery to keep the overall weight down some.

Ryobi Cordless Dual Action Polisher Design Notes

For speed control, the polisher has a lock-on slide switch and combines it with a variable speed dial. Its removable auxiliary handle supports multiple grip positions and you can flip it around for left-handed use.

The overall feel of the polisher is very similar to Ryobi’s HP Brushless Angle Grinder with its slimmer handle. It’s very easy to maneuver and control, especially when working around delicate vehicle body lines.

All of this comes in a package that weighs just 3.75 pounds as a bare tool—the lightest in its class according to Ryobi. That’s a really big deal if you’re polishing for hours at a time on a busy day.

Additional Features

  • Battery life indicator
  • Anti-mar bumpers
  • Hex key storage in auxillary handle

Ryobi Cordless Dual Action Polisher Price

The Ryobi PBF100B is available from The Home Depot for $199 as a bare tool. We recommend spending $30 more to get it with a 4.0Ah battery and charger.

The polisher kit comes with a 5″ hook and loop backer pad, finishing pad, correcting pad, cutting pad, aux handle, hex key, and wrench. As usual, Ryobi backs it with a 3-year warranty.

The Bottom Line

Ryobi’s cordless dual action polisher produces excellent results with a design and features we expect to find on more expensive Pro-level models. While it doesn’t have the efficiency of a brushless motor, its price point is well under models that do. If you’re on the hunt for a dual action polisher that lets you cut the cord without breaking the bank, Ryobi has you covered.
