Ridgid Launches Long-Awaited 18V Cordless Rear-Handle Circular Saw

Ridgid has been on a run fulfilling the requests of its user base. First, it was outdoor power equipment. Today, we’re getting our hands on the Ridgid 18V cordless rear handle circular saw. Was it worth waiting for? Let’s find out!

Pros

  • Excellent cutting speed and power
  • Smooth guard action
  • Incredibly lightweight for a rear-handle saw
  • Excellent value
  • High-contrast depth and bevel markings

Cons

  • No significant drawbacks

Ridgid 18V Cordless Rear Handle Circular Saw Performance

Ridgid 18V Cordless Rear Handle Circular Saw Review

Ridgid turns to a brushless motor to drive this saw’s blade speeds up to 5800 RPM. It’s one of the first products we’ve seen specifically designed around the 8.0Ah Max Output EXP battery with members of the OPE line also using it.

The big deal is that this battery provides not only higher capacity, but also even more power output than the original Max Output packs. Like all Ridgid 18V tools, this saw can use any Ridgid 18V battery. However, you’ll see better performance with a Max Output battery and the best performance with a Max Output EXP pack.

All of that translates into blade speed and torque that exceeds what 15-amp worm drive models can produce. The cutting is confident and we weren’t able to stall the blade, even when pushing it hard. Like most saws, you can stall it if you’re cutting without regard to cutting accuracy, but that’s not realistic on the job.

The cutting depth is right where we expect it to be: 2 1/2 inches at 90° and 1 7/8 inches at 45°. The saw also has the standard 53° maximum bevel.

As you would expect with an advanced circular saw, the Ridgid R8658 has an electric blade brake to stop the blade quickly.

Ridgid 18V Cordless Rear Handle Circular Saw Design Notes

Ergonomics

Ridgid 18V Cordless Rear Handle Circular Saw Review

Aside from the performance, this saw’s weight is a really big deal. Thanks to an all-magnesium construction, the bare tool weighs just 9.5 pounds (10.1 pounds with blade and dust port).

With its 8.0Ah battery and blade, the Ridgid R8658 has a working weight of 12.4 pounds. That’s a hair under Makita’s XSR01 at 12.5 pounds with its 5.0Ah battery loadout which was the previous lightweight champ. However, it’s not as light as Metabo HPT’s 36V model which has a working weight of just 10.6 pounds.

Compare that to Milwaukee’s M18 Fuel rear handle saw that weighs 10.3 pounds before you add the hefty 12.0Ah battery that comes with it and 13.7 pounds fully loaded.

Adjustments

Bevel Cut

Blade depth and bevel adjustments are standard with an all-metal clamp lock taking care of security. Both have high-contrast white markings against black that make the measurements very easy to see.

The bevel range has built-in detents to hit the 15°, 22.5°, 30°, and 45° marks you commonly need.

Blade Changes

There aren’t any surprises when you need to change the blade. Just be aware that you do need to remove the diamond knockout on new blades and that the blade-left orientation means you’re using a reverse-thread arbor bolt to secure it.

Additional Highlights

  • Removable dust port accepts 1 1/4 or 1 7/8-inch hoses without an adapter
  • Integrated rafter hook

Ridgid 18V Cordless Rear Handle Circular Saw Price

You can get your hands on this saw at your local Home Depot or homedepot.com for $239.00 as a bare tool. There’s also a kit that comes with an 8.0Ah Max Output EXP battery and charger for $349.00.

As usual, Ridgid offers a Lifetime Service Agreement on your purchase if you register within 90 days.

The Bottom Line

Ridgid did it right with the design of its cordless rear-handle circular saw. It’s lightweight and ergonomically sound with excellent cutting speed and power. While there are a couple of minor feature trade-offs compared to other options, the R8658 has the performance Pros need with the value you’re used to getting from Ridgid.

DeWalt’s 60V Cut-Off Saw Gives You Versatile Cuts

For cutting concrete, tile, and metal, a cut-off saw gives you the variability and power you need. Only a few brands offer 9-inch handheld cut-off saws, so your options are kind of limited. However, the DeWalt 60V Cut-Off Saw DCS692 adds to the list to fill out that market gap. We’ll walk you through what this tool brings to the table and how it updates the brand’s previous model.

DeWalt 60V Max Cordless 9-Inch Cut-Off Saw: The Big Deal

DeWalt 60V Max Cordless 9-Inch Cut-Off Saw

There are a couple of differences between this cut-off saw and DeWalt’s previous iteration, the DCS690. For starters, this saw updates its battery box to accommodate DeWalt’s larger 15.0Ah (5.0Ah at 60V Max) batteries. You can latch and seal the battery box to protect the battery from harsh jobsite conditions.

Then there’s the Wireless Tool Control function, which lets you connect to and control a secondary tool remotely. Connecting this cut-off saw to a FlexVolt 60V Max Dust Extractor using Wireless Tool Control activates the extractor when you pull the saw’s trigger. When you release the trigger, the vacuum turns off automatically.

Same Performance

This tool’s 6600 no-load RPM allows for fast single-pass cuts and scores in hard materials like concrete, stone, and rebar. Its 9-inch wheel has a cut capacity of up to 3 1/4 inches deep.

Like the last model, this cut-off saw features a 5-position blade guard which lets you choose the ideal cutting angle for visibility and mobility in confined spaces. Additionally, you can perform both horizontal and vertical cuts comfortably with the adjustable, 3-position handle.

Additional Features

  • Heavy-load indicator light
  • OSHA Table 1 compliant for dust management with dual-sided water feed system
  • 2-stage trigger switch helps prevent accidental activation
  • Tool Connect Tag-ready

DeWalt 60V Max Cordless 9-Inch Cut-Off Saw Price

You can find the DCS692 cut-off saw as a bare tool for $629. If you need batteries to go along with it, there’s also a kit that includes two FlexVolt 15.0Ah batteries for $949. That kit option is pretty attractive considering those batteries run $249 each when they’re on sale.

DeWalt backs your purchase with a 3-year warranty and a 1-year free service contract.

Greenworks 24V Cordless Speed Saw Makes Quick Work Of More Than Drywall

Anyone who has ever tried their hand at drywall work will tell you that it’s no easy task, especially when it comes time to cut out switches and outlets. It’s messy, and using a jab saw is a pain. Luckily, the Greenworks 24V Cordless Speed Saw is here to help move things along a little quicker and might just be more versatile than you realize.

Greenworks Cordless Speed Saw Cut-Out Tool Performance

Greenworks 24V Cordless Speed Saw Cut-Out Tool Review

The single-speed brushless motor spins the bit up to 27,000 RPM allowing it to smoothly glide through material with ease. The on/off slide switch is in a convenient spot to easily access without having to reposition your hand.

Despite the speed, rotary saws like these tend to leave a messy edge, so get a little practice on some scrap material if this is a new type of tool for you.

You might think that rotary cut-out tools are for drywall and that’s partially correct. They’re also useful for dense foam, plaster, and plywood, making them more versatile than some folks realize.

However, we definitely recommend using both PPE in the way of glasses and a mask because these tools can make one heck of a mess no matter what you’re cutting in. If you have a vacuum, check out Milwaukee’s Air-Tip Dust Collector accessory as a way to contain the dust more easily.

Greenworks Cordless Speed Saw Cut-Out Tool Design Notes

Ergonomics

Ergonomics

As rotary tools go, the Greenworks speed saw has a competitive weight and profile that are both comfortable for longer cuts and easy on the hands. From tip to tail it measures 9.25 inches with the depth guide fully extended and the main handle is only two inches in diameter. Along with being compact, it weighs in at just 2.75 pounds with a 2.0Ah battery.

The barrel grip design feels similar to a compact router and allows for various hand positions. This gives you excellent control when making precise cuts.

Depth Adjustments

Adjusting the tool-free depth guide is easy. Just loosen the plastic nut to adjust the guard and tighten it back down when you’re ready to work. Greenworks designed this guard with just over an inch of travel so you can dial in an exact cutting depth.

Bits and Accessories

Greenworks 24V Cordless Speed Saw Cut-Out Tool Review

The bare tool comes standard with a 1/8-inch wood bit and a 1/8-inch drywall bit along with a 1/4-inch collet insert. This allows you to use two different size bits depending on your application.

Additional Features

  • Tether ready
  • Multi-position belt hook

Greenworks Cordless Speed Saw Cut-Out Tool Price

The Greenworks 24V Cordless Speed Saw retails for $49.99 as a bare tool or $99.99 as a 2.0 battery/charger kit from Amazon. Either way, it’s not a bad deal when you consider the time you’re likely to save on some of your upcoming projects. It’s also backed by a 3-year limited tool warranty.

The Bottom Line

The Greenworks 24V Cordless Speed Saw packs excellent performance under the hood and it has a price tag that’s hard to pass up. All in all, this is a great option for DIYers that like to tackle intermediate to advanced home improvement/remodeling projects as well as handymen and building maintenance crews who want a high-value option for occasional tasks.

Masterforce Upgrades Brushless Circular Saw with Boost Package

The Masterforce Boost 20V cordless circular saw doesn’t look much different than its brushless predecessor. It’s what’s inside that counts, though. We decided to take a deeper dive and see what’s noteworthy about this updated model.

Pros

  • Brushless motor with Boost upgrade
  • Smooth guard action
  • Base glides well over material
  • All-metal blade cover, blade guard, bevel clamp, and depth clamp
  • Excellent performance for the price

Cons

  • No major drawbacks

Masterforce Boost Cordless Circular Saw Performance

The Masterforce Boost cordless circular saw uses its brushless motor to drive a 7-1/4″ blade. With a no-load speed of 4800 RPM, this saw cuts smoothly and the blade leaves a nice finish for a stock blade. The guard action is nice and smooth as well.

Masterforce Boost 20V Circular Saw Beauty

For more aggressive, quick cuts, you can feel the motor start to drop RPMs under a heavier load. It feels a lot like the Pro-level cordless circular saws from just a couple of years ago. It’s perfectly capable of making the cut—even compound miter cuts aren’t a problem. It’s just not going to have the hot-knife-through-butter feel that today’s premium-level saws do. However, it doesn’t have the same high-dollar price tag, either.

Masterforce Boost 20V Cordless Circular Saw Bevel Cutting

The max cutting capacity at 90º is 2 7/16 inches while at 45º, you can cut up to 1 13/16 inches.

The bevel maxes out at 56º and a flip-out plastic piece gives you a stop at 45º. That handles the majority of common cuts out there, so we don’t have any complaints on the capacity front.

Boost Upgrade

The Boost upgrade for this saw is primarily an inside job. Instead of just using a brushless motor to improve the performance, runtime, and life of the tool, Boost completes the package with updated electronics and a smarter battery system.

When the tool detects a Boost battery, it’s able to call on more power and give it a bump in performance. Compared to the previous brushless model, you’ll notice similar performance with a standard battery and more confidence in the cut with a Boost pack.

Masterforce Boost Cordless Circular Saw Design Notes

The Build

Masterforce Boost 20V Circular Saw Build Quality

Masterforce sticks with metal components for the base, blade cover, and blade guard. Often, high-value saws go for plastic blade guards, and we like that Masterforce avoids that temptation.

On their brushed FlexPower model, the lever locks for the bevel and depth were plastic as opposed to metal. Those levers were a little more flexible than I prefer, so we’re happy to see this updated version has all-metal levers.

Ergonomics

There’s nothing crazy about the general design of this blade-right sidewinder and ergonomically speaking, it’s a very sound design. The two handles are in line with each other and the secondary handle has enough girth to get a secure grip if your hands are larger or you’re wearing gloves. A simple push with your thumb releases the push-in trigger safety.

Masterforce Boost 20V Cordless Circular Saw Weight

As a bare tool, the Masterforce Boost cordless brushless circular saw weighs 7.8 pounds and 8.8 with a 2.5Ah Boost battery pack. We didn’t have a 5.0Ah Boost battery for testing but expect the weight to come up another 1/2-pound or so with the higher capacity.

Overall, Masterforce managed to reduce the weight a little bit compared to the FlexPower model, and it’s still on par with Pro saws that go with the same kind of metal construction.

Blade Changes

Masterforce Boost 20V Cordless Circular Saw Flat Motor housing

Blade changes are pretty standard—just push down the blade lock and use the onboard hex wrench to loosen the arbor bolt. Masterforce adds a modern twist with its flat motor housing. It lets you set the saw on the motor housing so you can change it more conveniently.

Additional Features

  • Electric brake
  • LED light has a pre-light and afterglow
  • Stout rafter hook

Masterforce Boost Cordless Circular Saw Price

The regular price on this saw is $156.95 as a bare tool and, at the moment, there aren’t any kit options available. However, if you’re on the Menards mail-in rebate train, we’ve seen it as low as $139.69.

There’s a 6 1/2-inch version available that also has the Boost upgrade. It runs $119.99 as a bare tool if you’re looking for something lighter and more compact.

Menard’s often runs rebates and sales, so it’s very possible to snag a deal for even less!

The Bottom Line

The Masterforce Boost circular saw quietly sits in a favorable position without much competition as a brushless 7 1/4-inch model in the sub-$200 price range. While it’s not designed to compete with high-dollar premium saws, it has a solid design and feature set to go with performance that’s perfectly capable of handling all of your circular saw cuts.

Hilti Nuron Cordless Jigsaw Gives You The Control You’re Craving

Cordless jigsaws have been a part of our lives for years and have really come into their own as full corded replacements. We got our hands on the Hilti Nuron cordless jigsaw to see how it compares to the other major players in this space.

Pros

  • Excellent cutting speed
  • Outstanding vibration control
  • Three orbital action modes plus off
  • One-hand bit insertion
  • Spring-loaded blade eject
  • Low shoe friction
  • D-handle (tested) and barrel grip options are available
  • Includes splinter guard, dust shield, and vacuum port attachment
  • Available onboard dust collector

Cons

  • Bevel adjustments require a tool
  • No onboard tool storage

Hilti Nuron Cordless Jigsaw Performance

Power Plant

Not every tool on the Nuron platform is brushless. The Hilti Nuron cordless jigsaw is among the brushed models, but don’t let that make you shy away from it. Considering professional corded models tend to be in the 7-amp range, this is a tool that doesn’t need a brushless power plant to reach the same performance.

It’s able to churn out up to 3000 SPM with a 1.1-inch stroke length. Combine that with the three orbital action settings and you’ve got an extremely capable and competitive jigsaw.

Hilti Nuron Cordless Jigsaw Review SJD 6-22

Under the handle, there’s a variable speed dial to control your maximum speed. There’s also a lock-on button for the trigger. When you’re making long cuts, it’s a very handy combination to have.

Speed dial

There’s plenty of power for jigsawing, even when you’re cutting material on the fringes of what most people consider “typical” use. Here’s are Hilti’s cut capacity recommendations:

  • Wood: 5.9 in.
  • Mild Sheet Steel: 0.39 in.
  • Aluminum: 1.0 in.

As part of Hilti’s Nuron lineup, this jigsaw uses 22V Nuron batteries. While all of them are compatible, some are a better fit than others. We recommend the 4.0Ah B 22-85 for the best performance and runtime. The 2.5Ah B 22-55 is also a good option for a bit less weight and size.

Vibration

Active Vibration Reduction technology helps to reduce handle vibrations compared to traditional models. When we put it to the test out in the shop, we couldn’t believe how little vibration we felt in our hands. There are several cordless models that do a great job in vibration control, and Hilti tops them all in our opinion.

Hilti Nuron Cordless Jigsaw Review SJD 6-22

Visibility and Dust Collection

Hilti has a very good sight window to the blade while the cutline blower and LED light do a great job of keeping your line visible.

Dust shield

Visibility is still excellent when you add the splinter guard. Like every jigsaw we’ve tested, when you add the dust shield, it’s more challenging to keep as good an eye on the line.

Vac Attachment

Hilti offers a couple of ways to collect dust. They include a dust port attachment that pulls air from both sides. Low-CFM vacs don’t do a lot good with this (but it is better with the dust guard on). Stick with a vac that has at least 100 CFM for the best results.

Hilti Nuron Cordless Jigsaw Review SJD 6-22

We didn’t get a chance to test it, but there’s also an attachable onboard dust collection system. The SJD 6 DRS installs where you see the electrical connections on the base of the motor housing. It has an automatic on/off function tied to the trigger pull and it eliminates the need for a hose dragging behind you.

Hilti Nuron Cordless Jigsaw Design Notes

Ergonomics

Hilti Nuron Cordless Jigsaw Review SJD 6-22

As a bare tool, the jigsaw weighs 4.9 pounds. Using a 2.5Ah battery brings it up to 6.1 pounds and the 4.0Ah pack puts it at 6.6 pounds. That’s heavier than some of the options out there, but some additional weight isn’t a very big deal. In fact, the weight working with the low-friction shoe can help stabilize your cut and give you more control.

The contoured D-grip top handle, low weight, and slim profile make this cordless jigsaw more comfortable to guide through complicated cuts. Looking at it from the side, it’s not quite as tall as some other jigsaws and that lets you get a little closer to the cutting surface.

If you prefer a barrel grip, Hilti has you covered. Just look for the SJT 6-22 instead.

Bevel Adjustments

Hilti Nuron Cordless Jigsaw Review SJD 6-22

Hilti sticks with a standard bevel adjustment system, however, it’s not tool-free and the tool doesn’t store on the tool. You need to use a hex wrench to loosen the bolt before sliding it to your desired angle.

The only detent on the shoe is at 0°. However, there are markings on the shoe at 15°, 22.5°, 30°, and 45° to help you dial in angles for your bevel cuts.

Blade Changes

Blade changes are super-easy thanks to Hilti’s spring-loaded design. To install a blade, just push it into the clamp. You don’t even need to flip the lever. When it’s time to remove the blade, pull the lever out and a spring actively ejects it.

Additional Features

  • Compatible with T-shank blades
  • Tether-ready using the handle

Hilti Nuron Cordless Jigsaw Price

This jigsaw retails for $269 as a bare tool. Hilti allows you to customize your kit by selecting your batteries and chargers based on your needs. If you happen to be on Hilti’s Fleet Management service, the tool is only $8.50 per month and includes regular maintenance, no-cost repairs, and world-class customer service.

The tool carries a 20-year warranty and a 2-year free service agreement.

Compatible Batteries

  • 2.5Ah (B 22-55): $99.75 each (best for the lightest weight)
  • 4.0 Ah (B 22-85): $136.00 each (best for balancing size and weight with performance and runtime)
  • 8.0 Ah (B 22-170): $207.00 each (compatible but not recommended due to size and weight)
  • 12.0 Ah (B 22-255): $243.00 each (compatible but not recommended due to size and weight)

The Bottom Line

Hilti does so many things right with the Nuron jigsaw’s performance and design that it’s easy to give it a pass on the minor areas for improvement. If you’re looking for a strong cordless jigsaw that offers low vibration and outstanding control, the Hilti SJD 6-22 is for you!

Tackle Your Weekend Punchlist With The Skil 4 1/2-Inch Compact Circular Saw

While 4 1/2-inch circular saws aren’t new, they can be useful for a variety of projects and repairs around the house. The Skil 20V 4 1/2-inch compact circular saw is one of the latest additions to the PWRCore 20 lineup and we got to run it through its paces.

Skil 20V Compact Circular Saw Performance

Skil PWRCore 20V Brushless 4 1/2-Inch Compact Circular Saw Review

The saw comes equipped with a 4 1/2-inch 24-tooth thin kerf blade. Its brushless motor spins this compact blade up to 6,000 RPM which helps it confidently power through materials with ease. While you cut, an LED light and cutline blower keep your cutline visible. There’s also a vacuum port if you want to collect dust on the fly.

The speed is more than you typically see from larger saws. With that small blade diameter, it needs a higher RPM to keep the tooth speed up. The tooth count is significant as well, with 24 teeth on that small of a blade leaving a finer finish to your cut than the same count on a larger blade.

The magic of this size saw is that it gives you the ability to make quick one-handed cuts on the fly. Even compared to compact 6 1/2-inch saws, the inline design of this model makes one-hand cutting easier and more maneuverable.

The cut capacity is 1 1/2 inches, which is right on the edge of 2x material. We actually measured the tip of the tooth at 1 9/16, so there’s a little extra room there. One thing to look out for is slightly swollen or warped boards. We ran into a couple of 2x boards in our shop that prevented a full through cut because of those issues (thanks, Florida humidity). If that’s a concern for you, consider stepping up to one of Skil’s full-sized models.

Ergonomics

Skil PWRCore 20V Brushless 4 1/2-Inch Compact Circular Saw Review

This saw has a very unique shape and balance for a circular saw because of its elongated inline design. It weighs in at 5.2 pounds with a 2.0Ah battery, making it significantly lighter than traditional circular saw designs. It measures 15.5 inches from tip to tail.

The grip is slightly on the smaller side compared to other PWRCore 20V tools and has a comfortable feel, even if you have smaller hands.

One feature this saw lacks is a front pommel for two-hand use. While we were able to make accurate cuts just fine, it would be helpful for folks that aren’t as confident.

Cutting Adjustments

height Adjustment

Despite having a non-traditional look, the bevel and height adjustments function in a similar way to the saw’s big brothers. The big difference is that they use bolts a thumbscrew-style knob rather than a clamping lever.

Bevel Adjustment

To make either adjustment, start by loosening the knob then pivot the shoe to your desired angle or depth. It has a depth gauge molded into the back of the blade cover for depth. They can be a little tough for some folks to easily read, though (I’m looking at you, Kenny Koehler). Additionally, it has a max 45° bevel with markings at 15°, 30°, and 45°.

Additional Features

  • On-board wrench storage
  • Battery charges from 0% – 25% using a PWRJump charger

Skil 20V Compact Circular Saw Price

This compact circular saw is available as a kit for $123.95 from Amazon and includes a 2.0Ah battery, PWRJump charger, and a 5-year limited warranty.

The Bottom Line

Skil’s 4 1/2-inch compact circular saw gives DIYers a lightweight, one-hand option that’s less intimidating to use than a full-size model. It’s a confident-cutting saw thanks to its brushless motor and an outstanding value considering its price and performance compared to its competition.

Hilit Nuron Metal Cutting Circular Saw

The Hilti Nuron release introduces some innovative tools to the professional scene over the last few months. Along with them, we’re seeing some of the tried and true favorites hitting the market with a fresh technology update. Among this group is the Hilti Nuron 6 1/2-inch metal cutting circular saw that promises the same great performance now with the Nuron advantage.

Hilti Nuron Inch Metal Cutting Circular Saw Performance

Hilti Nuron Metal Cutting Circular Saw

The Hilti SC 5ML-22 is a cold-cut metal saw that cuts nearly spark-free. It’s fully capable of cutting through mild and stainless steel with ease. Being a cold-cut saw, the 6 1/2-inch blade’s 3500 RPM top speed is slower than abrasive options such as grinders and chop saws.

As you cut, there’s an integrated spark catcher on the rear of the blade guard that catches chips and slag to help contain the mess.

You’ll notice Hilti’s blade brake when you take your finger off the trigger. It stops the blade in just seconds and a layer of safety in combination with the blade guard.

This metal-cutting saw is well-suited for making straight cuts on sheet goods as well as pipe and conduit. Hilti includes an adjustable fence that fits directly into the stainless steel shoe to help you make more accurate and consistent cuts. It’s also compatible with an optional guide rail and pipe adapter if you like.

  • Cutting channels, pipes, conduits, and profiles
  • Cutting openings in sheet metal for HVAC applications
  • Cutting sandwich panels, mesh, and corrugated sheet metal
  • Corrective cutting and trimming of sheet metal
Cutting Angle Iron

Hilti doesn’t specify a particular thickness limitation, but the max cutting capacity is 2 1/4 inches. A quick look at the rated applications above tells us that the saw does its best work on sheet goods. Just for kicks, we tried cutting on some thicker materials and were able to successfully cut 3/8-inch angle iron. You have to cut slow, but the cold cut speed left a nice, clean finish.

Hilti Nuron 6-1/2 Inch Metal Cutting Circular Saw Design Notes

Ergonomics

Hilti Nuron Metal Cutting Circular Saw

The Hilti SC 5ML-22 tips the scales at 7.31 pounds as a bare tool and right at 9 pounds with the recommended 4.0Ah battery (B 22-85). It measures 14 inches from tip to tail and stands just 9.5 inches tall.

In terms of comfort, this saw checks off some important boxes for us. The main handle is a bit on the thicker side and offers a secure grip thanks to rubber overmold.

Even though compact saws tend to make your hands feel too close together on the handles, Hilti’s spacing doesn’t feel as cramped as some saws we’ve used.

These factors make this saw very easy to control and even make one-hand cutting a possibility when you need to stabilize material with your other one.

Cutline Visibility

Maintaining a clear line of sight as you cut is a must. The saw has a bright LED work light that illuminates your work surface so you can maintain an accurate cut, even with lower light conditions and shadows. Combined with the integrated dust blower, it does a nice job of making sure you can track your cut well.

There’s also a clear plastic shield on the side of the blade guard which amplifies the light and protects you from loose metal shards while making cuts.

Cutting Depth Adjustments

Adjusting the cut depth is pretty standard, just flip the lever at the back and set your desired depth. There are no depth indicator markings so you’ll want to double-check your settings with a measuring tape if you need absolute precision.

Additional Features

  • Integrated dust blower
  • On-board tool storage

The Benefits of Nuron Technology

While we’re happy with the performance and design of this saw, what exactly does Nuron technology add to the mix?

For starters, there’s a tangible benefit to Nuron batteries. Their combination of cell selection, resistance reduction, and cooling allows it to work harder without affecting the life of the pack.

Then there’s the smart side The batteries have the ability to automatically store and transmit data about the tool and battery, giving crib managers a leg up in tool management duties. Even if you’re using multiple tools with one battery, the pack stores the data for all of them and can transmit it via the charger.

Click here to take a deeper dive into the Nuron technology story.

Hilti Nuron Inch Metal Cutting Circular Saw Price

You can get the Hilti SC 5ML-22 from Hilti for $339.00 as a bare tool. Hilti gives you the ability to customize your kit’s configuration by letting you choose the batteries and chargers that best suit your needs.

For the tool crib managers out there, Hilti offers Fleet pricing which includes no-cost tool maintenance, fixed monthly pricing, and loaner tools to keep you up and running. On the fleet pricing program, this saw is $10.25 per month.

Battery Recommendations

  • Nuron B 22-55: Not recommended due to lower runtime and performance
  • Nuron B 22-85: Best combination of balance, size, weight, and performance
  • Nuron B 22-170: Recommended for when you need extra performance and runtime
  • Nuron B22-255: Not recommended due to excessive size and weight

The Bottom Line

The Hilti Nuron 6 1/2-inch metal cutting circular saw is an excellent cutter considering its compact size. For sheet metal, metal pipe, and even the occasional venture into angle iron, it’s a handy saw to have on hand and well worth it for fabricators and commercial construction contractors.

In preparation for reviewing the next-generation Kobalt 24V cordless reciprocating saw, I went back and read Clint’s review of the original from back in 2016. Back then, Kobalt was ahead of the game with genuinely impressive performance and was one of the first to adopt a brushless motor at a high-value price. For the price, it was tough to beat. As we started working with the updated model, we wanted to know if it still has those characteristics.

Kobalt 24V Cordless Reciprocating Saw Performance

Kobalt 24V Cordless Reciprocating Saw Review

Unsurprisingly, Kobalt sticks with a brushless motor. Using the tool’s variable speed trigger, you can run the blade up to 3200 SPM. Combined with a 1 1/4-inch stroke length, that’s a very solid number, keeping up with the best names in the business.

Compared to the previous model, it’s 100 SPM higher with an extra 1/8-inch on the stroke length. How much of a difference does that make?

In terms of linear blade movement, the original model covered 291 feet per minute. The next-gen model covers 333 feet per minute. What you’re cutting has a lot to do with the actual cutting speed, but in general, you can expect nearly 15% faster cutting speeds.

Another change is the shift to a 2-speed design. The original just had one and the update gives you a low-speed option that tops out at 2800 SPM and is great when you’re cutting metal.

Speed Selection

The speed is a big deal, but pay attention to vibration control, too. Kobalt added a counterbalance system to this model that drops the amount of vibration you feel by as much as 45%—that’s significantly better!

Kobalt 24V Cordless Reciprocating Saw Design Notes

Size and Weight

Kobalt 24V Cordless Reciprocating Saw Review

Considering the performance level, this is a compact saw. It measures 17.1 inches from tip to tail (18.3 inches when you have a battery installed). Bare, it weighs 6.1 pounds and a 4.0Ah battery brings the total weight to 7.8 pounds before you add a blade.

Blade Changes

Blade Release

The only change we’re not crazy about is the shift of the blade release. The original model had a lever on the housing and the new one switches to a more traditional blade-mounted release. It’s still tool-free and the access is better than some models we’ve tested, though.

Shoe

Shoe

As we expect on any reciprocating saw designed for serious DIY or professional work, the shoe pivots and has an adjustable length. To adjust the length and use a different part of your blade, press the button toward the front of the housing and adjust the shoe in or out. We really like that Kobalt designed it so that the shoe doesn’t come all the way out. It’s a small change, but it solves a minor pain point we have with some saws.

Additional Highlights

  • Rafter hook
  • LED light
  • Compatible with all Kobalt 24V batteries, including Ultimate Output

Kobalt 24V Cordless Reciprocating Saw Price

While it’s come down in price some over the years, Kobalt’s original 24V cordless reciprocating saw launched at $129 for the bare tool. The updated version? $129 for the bare tool. Considering the boost in performance, we’re not complaining. As usual, Kobalt has a 5-year warranty on the tool. It’s a great fit for serious DIYers and value-minded Pros, though some may want to consider stepping up to the stronger XTR model for heavier use.

The Bottom Line

The next-generation Kobalt 24V cordless reciprocating saw improves its cutting speed and makes serious gains in vibration control over the previous model. Perhaps most importantly for fans of the 24V line, it’s once again an excellent value with performance that punches above its price tag.

Metabo HPT 18V Cordless Circular Saw Targets More Power and Lighter Weight

One of the most common complaints—even among the best circular saws—is that they’re a bit on the heavy side. Most of the Metabo HPT circular saws favor a more lightweight approach, and the Metabo HPT C1807DAQ4 18V circular saw is no exception. Find out how this tool stays nimble without sacrificing power.

Metabo HPT 18V Circular Saw: The Big Deal

Although this circular saw is lightweight for its class, its brushless motor delivers up to 40% higher torque than other circular saws, according to Metabo HPT. With a maximum speed of 3,800 RPM, it employs a lower overall speed in order to deliver additional torque when needed. This should end up helping the tool cut with more power and without dropping the RPMs.

As for the cut capacity, you can expect to cut up to 5 layers of 1/2-inch, or 4 layers of 5/8-inch OSB/plywood. Being on the MultiVolt battery system, you can power it using either an 18V or 18V/36V MultiVolt battery. Using an 18V Compact 3.0Ah battery, it can make up to 200 2×4 cuts per charge.

With a bevel range of 0° to 55°, you have some additional flexibility when making compound cheek cuts for rafters and complex blocking. To help with safety, this saw also features an electric brake that stops the blade when you release the trigger.

Additionally, this circular saw includes a Silent mode, which lowers the tool’s speed to 2,000 RPM. This enables you to work with less noise output. When the load increases during Silent mode, the saw will automatically switch to normal mode and revert back once the load decreases.

Moreover, clear site lines and an integrated LED work light ensure faster and more accurate cuts.

Additional Features

  • Kickback protection
  • Dust collection adapter
  • Soft startup
  • Battery power level indicator

Metabo HPT C1807DAQ4 18V Circular Saw Price

This saw retails for $149 as a bare tool and you can find it at your favorite Metabo HPT retailer. At the time of writing, we don’t see any kit options available. Metabo HPT backs this saw with a lifetime tool body warranty.

Kobalt Updates Its 24V Cordless 6 1/2-Inch Circular Saw And Adds A Surprise New Feature

As Kobalt refreshes its initial run of 24V cordless tools, the next-generation models aim to offer a more compact package without sacrificing performance. Today, we’re taking a closer look at the Kobalt 24V cordless 6 1/2-inch circular saw to see how it compares to the original.

Kobalt Cordless 6 1/2-Inch Circular Saw Performance

Kobalt 24V Cordless 6 1/2-Inch Circular Saw Review

For starters, you can find the updated saw under the model number KCS 124B-03 and it’s a replacement for the KCS 6524B-03. It doesn’t compete with or replace the XTR 7 1/4-inch version (KXCS 124B-03) that maintains its status as Kobalt’s top-of-line cordless option.

The brushless motor turns the 6 1/2-inch blade at 5500 RPMs. The previous model ran at 5400 RPM, so there’s a bump in overall speed that results in faster cutting.

On the other hand, you lose a little bit of capacity. The first generation model cut up to 2 7/16 inches at 90°, matching some 7 1/4-inch saws. The updated model has a max capacity of 2 3/16, dropping about a 1/4-inch from what we had previously. At 45°, the capacity is 1 5/8 inches.

In terms of consequences, it’s a minor difference. The saw still has enough to cut through 2x material in one pass at both 90° and 45°. It’s also enough to rip cut three stacked sheets of 3/4-inch (technically, 23/32-inch) OSB subfloor or plywood.

Kobalt Cordless 6 1/2-Inch Circular Saw Design

Ergonomics

Handles

While we didn’t have any complaints with the size and weight of the original saw, the latest Kobalt cordless 6 1/2-inch circular saw manages to drop about a 1/4-pound. Bare, it weighs just 6.5 pounds and a 4.0Ah battery makes it a very manageable 8.3 pounds. Kobalt could have shaved more weight by going with a plastic blade guard the way many saws in this class do, but we prefer the greater durability of metal and we’re willing to have the slightly higher weight that comes with it.

The handle design doesn’t stray much, maintaining its inline positioning from the main handle to the front pommel. The pommel is agreeably large enough to fill your hand and the entire handle section has a generous covering of rubber overmold.

Adjustments

Height Adjustment

The bevel adjustment uses a standard clamping lever, though there’s no stop for the 45° angle as there is on some saws.

Blade depth adjustments are very different and we love the design. Instead of a clamping lever, you pinch a release to adjust the depth. There are plenty of detents to lock the depth into for even those of you who demand precision.

As for measuring the depth, you’ll find marks just above the adjustment mechanism that expose as you change the depth.

Dust Control

Vac Port

Rather than having a removable vac adapter that connects to the back of the blade cover, Kobalt sticks it on the front section pointing away from you. It has about 45° of rotation to help you manage your hose or adjust for any wind you’re dealing with. If you’re using the saw without a hose, we recommend pointing the nozzle down to help keep the dust off of you.

The adapter has a 1 1/4-inch diameter.

Lowe’s sells the Kobalt KCS 124B-03 as a bare tool for $129.00 in-store and online. There’s no kit option available at the time we’re writing, but there’s a better-than-average shot we’ll see some combo kits featuring this saw in the future. It comes with a 5-year warranty.

The Bottom Line

With the Kobalt 24V cordless 6 1/2-inch circular saw, the design team took a very good saw and made it even better. Its performance bump along with a solid design, compact size, and that fantastic new depth adjustment makes this a winner for serious DIYers and value-minded Pros.
