The Werner Aero Extension Ladder Aims To Take Safety To The Next Level With BoxLok Technology

When you’re working at height, having confidence in your ladder is a must. It eases your mind and helps you focus on the job at hand. Werner wants to make ladder confidence more commonplace with its Aero extension ladder. Find out how its BoxLok technology can benefit you the next time you take the climb up.

Werner Aero Extension Ladder With BoxLok: The Big Deal

The Werner Aero has some notable safety features that make it stand out from other ladders on the market. It’s a Type 1AA ladder that supports 375 lbs, including the user and their equipment, yet it’s 25% lighter than standard ladders with the same weight rating.

This ladder incorporates a BoxLok design, which uses interlocking box rails as opposed to the C-channel design present in many extension ladders. This means that while you need less material to build the ladder, it’s structurally reinforced, making it both lightweight and durable. This design also means you can expect a reduction in deflection, twist, sway, and bounce.

  • 16-Foot: 31.3 pounds
  • 20-Foot: 42 pounds
  • 24-Foot: 43.6 pounds
  • 28-Foot: 54.1 pounds
  • 32-Foot: 64.1 pounds

Dialing things in for the telecom industry, the ladder has an available factory-installed cable hook with a rubberized V-Rung (10-inch max diameter) or a strand grab. It’s also compatible with Werner’s Ladder WalkThru extension.

Additional Features

  • Weather-resistant
  • High-visibility green rails
  • Non-marring traction caps
  • Slip-resistant Traction-Tred tri rungs
  • 19-inch clear width
  • Open and close without external brackets
  • Non-conductive fiberglass rails
  • Built-in bubble level to check for even ladder footing

Werner Aero Extension Ladder With BoxLok Price

The ladder is available in various sizes and the prices range from $649 to $1,049 depending on the size and model.

Werner Glidesafe Extension Ladder Makes Extending and Lowering Easier with More Control

Werner isn’t new to climbing the ladder…get it? But seriously, professionals that depend on quality know that Werner is a prime contender when they’re in the market for a new ladder or looking for the latest innovation. We got our hands on the Werner GlideSafe extension ladder to see what the hype is all about.

Pros

  • Easy to extend and retract
  • Dual locking system to help prevent ladder extension during transport
  • Pre-pierced holes for accessory installation
  • Pivoting feet shift for use on a variety of surfaces

Cons

  • Heavier than some fiberglass options
  • Pricey

Werner Glidesafe Extension Ladder Design Notes

Werner Glidesafe Technology

Werner’s lift-assist technology is the key feature on this ladder and is what we were most interested in learning more about.

The lift assist technology does more than just lighten the load when extending the ladder, it also helps prevent slamming and rope burns when you’re lowering the extension.

The Glidesafe mechanisms offer resistance to assist in raising and lowering the extension. A pair of small cables run on the inner channel of the ladder rails. These cables extend and retract from tensioners that provide resistance.

Glidesafe strays from the more traditional dual-pulley which simply employs a simple mechanical advantage and it really does work to make raising and lowering the extension easier and safer.

Build Materials And Duty Rating

Werner’s non-conductive fiberglass construction makes it ideal for electricians or anyone working around electricity. The aluminum rungs and Alflo rung joints help to mitigate any twisting or flexing while you’re on the ladder. Two aluminum guides on either side at the top provide support and prevent any lateral shiting.

With the initial GlideSafe series, all of the options have a Type 1A/300-pound duty rating.

TypeWeight RatingDuty Rating
1AA375 poundsSuper Heavy Duty
1A300 poundsExtra Heavy Duty
1250 poundsHeavy Duty Industrial
2225 poundsMedium Duty Comercial
3200 poundsLight Duty Household

Foot Design

Aside from the Glide Safe tech, there are a couple of other features to point out about this model. First, the feet on this Werner extension ladder are a bit different than you might be used to. They flip down to create a pivoting foot that’s great for gripping hard surfaces like concrete. You can also flip them up to get spikes that dig into softer ground and improve the stability.

When the feet lock in place for soft ground, they’re not the easiest to kick back out. That’s good in the sense that they won’t slip while you’re on the ladder. You need to pull the feet toward the bottom of the ladder before you can make them pivot. We find it easiest to lay the ladder on its side to make it happen.

Dual Locking System

The Werner T6228-2GS features a dual locking safety system that prevents accidental extension while you’re transporting the ladder. Step one is a buckling nylon strap that connects a parallel rung from each of the sections in order to prevent any vertical shifting. Step two is a thumb lever on the left side that you press before you can raise the extension.

Available Accessories

  • Padded Fixed V-Rung
  • QuickClick Ladder Stabilizer
  • Cable Hooks
  • Adjustable Pole Lash

Additional Features

  • Polypropylene rope
  • Mar-resistant moulded end caps

Werner Glidesafe Extension Ladder Price and Options

Werner’s Glidesafe extension ladder is a Pro-level product and unsurprisingly carries a premium price. At $399.99 for the 28-foot model we tested, it’s more than homeowners are typically willing to spend, but Pro’s know quality is worth shelling out a little extra especially when safety is a concern.

Here are the other lengths and prices available:

  • 20ft – $279.99
  • 24ft – $339.99
  • 28ft – $399.99
  • 32ft – $469.99
  • 36ft – $525.99
  • 40ft – $659.99

The Bottom Line

The Werner Glidesafe extension ladder offers noticeably lighter and smoother extension along with a controlled descent for safer operation. While it is a bit on the heavier side than some fiberglass options, the lift assistance makes it feel like you’re working with a much lighter ladder.

It wasn’t too long ago that we had the pleasure of safely climbing around on the corner-friendly and easy-to-use Werner LeanSafe X3 fiberglass ladder. We’ve also learned recently that Werner has extended the LeanSafe line into the aluminum realm. It still provides the feature set that makes it so safe and easy to use, but now it comes in a lightweight and rugged aluminum frame.

Werner on the Aluminum LeanSafe X3 Ladder

Non-conventional stepladders continue to gain traction in the industry because of their focus on ladder versatility and convenience. The Aluminum LeanSafe X3 is incredibly easy to use, aids in productivity, and helps worksites stay safe and compliant in a wide range of use cases. It’s a product that will help pros accomplish more at a great value!

Kelly Markle, product manager at Werner

What’s the Big Deal?

Really, the big deal surrounding the Werner Aluminum LeanSafe Ladder is that it features an aluminum frame, as opposed to the fiberglass frame of the previous edition. While this doesn’t give you the shock resistance of the fiberglass, the aluminum offers similar strength and durability but with even less weight. In this case, it weighs just 22.8 lbs. compared to the 24 pounds of the original LeanSafe X3 ladder.

Of course, the Werner LeanSafe Series also has a lot going for it whether you opt for the aluminum or for the fiberglass. The 3-in-1 design lets you deploy it as a step ladder, straight ladder, or leaning ladder. It features a one-handed adjustment that lets you swap positions seamlessly.

The Werner Aluminum LeanSafe ladder can also be used against corners, studs, poles, and other vertical surfaces. It has non-marring rubber feet and leaning pads to make sure you don’t scratch up any of your work surfaces. It even comes with a magnetic tool tray and paint hook to keep your important materials secure.

Features

  • Seamless position change
  • One hand lock adjustment
  • All in one top, no adjustment needed
  • Non-marring rubber top protects work surfaces
  • Compact rear rails fit between framing studs

Werner Adjustable Pro Work Platform is a Must-Have for Any Contractor

I have to admit that it’s taken us longer to get our review of the Werner Adjustable Pro Work Platform than I expected. The problem? We couldn’t get it away from Clint DeBoer long enough to do our testing!

Now that he’s done with all of the projects around his house, the rest of our team has had a chance to use it and weigh in on this incredibly useful support platform.

Pros

  • Wide platform is easier on your feet and more stable than ladder rungs
  • Step-friendly adjustable height
  • Lightweight enough to easily carry with one hand (21.5 pounds)
  • Easy setup and adjustments
  • Legs lock in both open and closed positions

Cons

  • No significant drawbacks

Recommendation

Considering how useful the Werner Adjustable Pro Platform is (and how many times we had to get Clint to bring it back so we could finish testing it), it’s hard to image doing our jobs without it now.

You still need quality extension and A-frame ladders, of course. However, you should really consider adding this platform to that list of must-have support items as well. When you’re working at heights of roughly 9 feet or less, including on stairs, it’s simply safer and more comfortable.

Werner Adjustable Pro Work Platform

For a lot of our reviews, the features are a nice aside while the performance is what really drives the tool’s usefulness. For the Werner Adjustable Pro Platform, it’s the design features that make it so doggone useful.

Step Up to Foot Relief

The number one reason to go with a work platform over a ladder is simply to have a longer, wider base to stand on. With Werner’s design, it’s 46 inches long and 14 inches wide. It’s more stable, gives you room to move around some, and is sooo much easier on your feet than ladder rungs.

Werner Adjustable Pro Platform

The side edges have a non-marring bumper. In addition to protecting surfaces, it’s also give your feet a little bit of tactile feedback so you know you’re close to the edge.

Simple Step-Friendly Setup

Setting up the Werner Adjustable Pro Work Platform is super-easy. Squeeze the two yellow tabs just underneath the platform to release the legs. They’re made of plastic with no hard edges, so they’re really easy on your fingers even if you’re not wearing gloves.

Leg lock

There’s a little stiffness to the pivot and that’s a good thing. When you release either side, gravity doesn’t take over and swing the legs down. While that makes it a two-hand operation, it prevents them from slamming against the stop and causing undue wear.

Height adjustment

In its base configuration, the platform, gives you an additional 20 inches of reach. By squeezing the button under the side step, you can adjust it in 1-inch increments up to 30 inches.

Between using just one set of legs and being able to adjust both sides, you can easily work on any steps or stairs without having the platform off balance.

Werner Adjustable Pro Platform

Easy Transport

Thanks to its 21.5-pound weight, the Werner Adjustable Pro Work Platform is easy to carry around with one hand. There’s a center handle that Werner dubs “Easy-Grab” to help you out.

Werner Adjustable Pro Platform

Carrying in the center, the platform wants to balance out top-side up. That’s helpful when you’re adjusting the legs, but tough to carry around. You can carry it to either side of the handle so it’s sideways, though it’s not as comfortable on your hands.

When you’re in the middle of painting or nailing trim, the handle makes it easier to move the platform along quickly as you go.

Tough Build

For an adjustable design, the platform feels really well-built. It’s nice and stable with no wobble in the joints. Even the locks for the pivot and height adjustments on the legs seem solid.

Locked Leg

It carries a 300-pound load rating, so it should cover most people and the tools they’re carrying or have on a tool belt.

Price

The Werner Adjustable Pro Work Platform is available for $109 and Lowe’s is the best retailer to find it. Given its built quality and versatility, we think that’s a fair price.

Werner Adjustable Pro Work Platform: The Bottom Line

Considering how useful the Werner Adjustable Pro Platform is (and how many times we had to get Clint to bring it back so we could finish testing it), it’s hard to imagine doing our jobs without it now.

You still need quality extension and A-frame ladders, of course. However, you should really consider adding this platform to that list of must-have support items as well. When you’re working at heights of roughly 9 feet or less, including on stairs, it’s simply safer and more comfortable.

Experience Next-Level Luxury with Savaria Vuelift

Sometimes you see something so cool you just have to show it to others. For us, the Vuelift elevator fits the bill. Designed and built using quality materials and components, the Savaria Vuelift Residential Elevator provides a smooth and scenic ride that puts climbing stairs to shame. Seriously, why would anyone take the stairs? Well, possibly because of how expensive it is to install this elevator. How much does it cost? Well, if you have to ask—you probably can’t afford it! Seriously, though—prices start around $50,000.

Savaria Vuelift Residential Elevator

  • Round or octagonal design
  • Driven by energy-efficient winding drum drive train system using two aircraft cables
  • Cab fitted with 24 low-friction guides
  • Available in 840-lb capacity acrylic or 950 lb. capacity glass models
  • Services up to 6 stops over a max travel distance of 42.5′
  • Black, silver, or white powder coat as standard, custom colors available

Use Vuelift to Class Up the Joint

The Savaria Vuelift advertises an “extraordinary lift for those who appreciate luxury on the next level.” We can’t disagree. These panoramic elevators feature an integrated hoistway and come in either round or octagonal profiles.

Savaria Vuelift Residential Elevator

An energy-efficient winding drum drive train system uses two aircraft cables to drive the Vuelift. Meanwhile, Savaria has fitted the elevator cab with 24 guides made from low-friction material. The end result is a residential elevator model that gently glides up and down to a maximum of 6 stops and 42.5 feet.

The Vuelift is More Than a Play on Words

The Savaria Vuelift, if the name isn’t enough of an indication, prides itself on the quality of the view from within the elevator. You can choose between an acrylic or glass model. The Vuelift glass models feature crystal-clear low-iron silica glass for the best clarity with no green hue. The acrylic models are constructed from premium clear acrylic panels that exceed code requirements for strength and avoid discoloration over time.

Safety and reliability are also paramount for the Savaria Vuelift. These elevators comply fully with ASME A17.1 section 5.3 codes, which outline the criteria for avoiding deflection, entrapment, and other safety risks. The winding drum drive system offers reliable and consistent speed under load while operating at a max 67 dB(A). The acrylic model supports up to 840 lbs., while the glass models support up to 950 lbs.

Savaria Vuelift Residential Elevator

The Savaria Vuelift features a streamlined installation process. Once electricity and a phone line are in place, the elevator can be set up by a single team. This eliminates the need for calling in multiple trade Pros and avoids the contractor domino effect. The Vuelift also requires minimal ongoing maintenance, reducing the expected number of times you might need to call on your installers.

Savaria makes all of its Vuelift Residential Elevator models in North America. They come in virtually any color you can imagine to match your preferred decor. If you have the money to look twice at this elevator, then quit walking up and down your home stairs like some sort of uncultured Philistine and get one!

Werner Leansafe X3 Ladder Simplifies a Useful Design

The Werner Leansafe X3 ladder is a 3-in-1 design that acts as a leaning, A-frame, and extension ladder that’s corner-friendly. It’s functionally similar to Little Giant’s King Kombo. However, Werner made some intelligent changes in its design that make it much easier to use.

Pros

  • Type 1AA 375-lb load rating
  • 3-in-1 leaning, A-frame, and extension ladder
  • Built-in top cap nestles on inside and outside corners, secures on studs
  • Super-easy adjustments
  • Relatively light at 24.1 pounds
  • Rear rails fit between studs
  • Design puts you closer to walls in A-frame position

Cons

  • Highest A-frame height doesn’t let you reach volume ceilings
  • Only one size available right now
  • Extended position doesn’t allow for corner/stud benefits

Recommendation

The Werner Leansafe X3 is the perfect ladder for everyday tasks for both professionals and homeowners. It’s limited to single-story heights and there might be a few times you wish the corner/stud feature was accessible in the extension position. However, those are very minor considerations.

Thanks to its 3-in-1 positioning, electrical-friendly fiberglass frame, and easy use, it’s one of the most versatile ladders you can buy. It’s our new go-to ladder and we only reach for something else when we need more height or a podium ladder for extended work.

Multiple Positions, Easy Adjustments

For a ladder, we actually have quite a bit to talk about on the Werner Leansafe X3. Like other 3-in-1 multi-position ladders, it can lean in, stand alone as an A-frame, or flip around to an extension height.

Werner leansafe X3

Folded it’s 6 feet tall and extends out to 9 feet when you swing the rear rails around. For an average person, that’s a 10-foot reach for the first two positions and 13 feet as an extension. I’m 6 feet, 2 inches tall, so my reach is a bit higher.

Werner leansafe X3

It took about 5 minutes to fall in love with the Werner Leansafe X3 ladder and it’s all about how you make those position changes. Other ladders we use have spring-loaded pins on the outside of the rails. Werner uses a pinching system in the middle of the rail that lets you release both sides with one hand and it’s SOOOO much easier!

The other systems force you to change your position around the ladder as you release, adjust, and sometimes pop the pins back in place if they don’t slip in on their own. Werner’s design doesn’t have that kind of issue.

But Wait, There’s More!

We’d have been sold just on the adjustment, but there are several other design features worth pointing out.

Werner leansafe X3

In the leaning position, the contact side of the top has a non-marring material covering it. It’s also in a shape that contours to sit nicely on inside corners, outside corners, and even against exposed studs. Unlike Little Giant’s version, there’s nothing to flip out. It’s just there when it’s needed and doesn’t get in the way when it’s not.

You lose the corner/stud benefit when the ladder is in the extension position, though. It’s not something that affects a lot of what we do, but you might run into a spot you wish it had the option on warehouse jobs, in large shops, or other high-ceiling structures.

Most A-frame ladders pivot at the top, but Werner moves the X3’s down one step. Doing that gives you the stability you need while moving the top over the rear rails and closer to the wall or surface you’re working next to.

The rear rails are also narrower—just 14-1/4 inches. The width lets you put the ladder between studs while you’re running wire, cable, pipe or other material in the pre-drywall phase.

Additional Features

  • Slip-resistant foot pads
  • Werner Edge360 bracing
  • Electrical-friendly fiberglass frame
  • Certifications: ANSI A14.5 (2007), OSHA
  • Yellow and orange color scheme makes it highly visible while standing out from your other ladder types

Werner leansafe X3 Werner leansafe X3

Pricing

You can pick up the Werner Leansafe X3 ladder for $169 which is right around Little Giant’s pricing. Little Giant gives you its Ground Cue feature on the bottom step. It’s helpful, but I like Werner’s adjustment system so much better that it puts the Leansafe in the win column for me.

Get it at Acme Tools

The Bottom Line

The Werner Leansafe X3 is the perfect ladder for everyday tasks for both professionals and homeowners. It’s limited to single-story heights and there might be a few times you wish the corner/stud feature was accessible in the extension position. However, those are very minor considerations.

Thanks to its 3-in-1 positioning, electrical-friendly fiberglass frame, and easy use, it’s one of the most versatile ladders you can buy. It’s our new go-to ladder and we only reach for something else when we need more height or a podium ladder for extended work.

Fresh on the heels of the Werner Leansafe ladder announcement, the Werner Multi-Position Pro Ladder offers sixteen positions over five configurations with a focus on lightweight durability and safety. It’s among a raft of premium ladders competing to be the Pro tradesman’s climbing equipment, so it fits the bill for handy DIYers and homeowners, too. See if it’s a step above your current ladder in this review.

Pros

  • Single and double-sided step, extension, wall, and stairway ladder that separates into scaffolding base
  • Strong J-lock locking mechanism and hinges
  • Wider top and bottom for stability
  • Powerlight rail technology keeps ladder weight to 23.5 pounds while offering a 375-pound load capacity
  • Compact for easy storage and transport
  • Rubberized feet

Cons

  • Caveat, not a con: you might find the slack angle of the wall ladder configuration to be awkward

Recommendation

The aluminum Werner Multi-Position Pro series allows you to send your other ladders packin’ because you can get the job done with its 5 configurations and 16 positions. The Powerlight rail system keeps the weight down while offering a 375-pound load capacity. That means two average-sized people can use the double-sided step ladder at once. The stair configuration lets you negotiate uneven surfaces, the wall configuration puts you in close contact with your work, and the scaffolding position lets you work in a bigger area. The flared legs also provide a great deal of stability. Four excellent J-locks and two beefy hinges let the moving parts of the ladder work smoothly while securing them in the desired position. It has a great price and a compact footprint when collapsed. It’s simply a solid piece of climbing (and safety) equipment.

Can a Ladder Be Both Sturdy and Flexible?

Around 100,000 people per year fall from ladders. Some of those falls are undoubtedly operator error. Still, a sturdy ladder in the right configuration can improve safety. Knowing how to choose the right ladder can save you some hassle. The aluminum Werner Multi-Position Pro Ladder offers five types of ladders and sixteen positions to keep you as safe and as productive as possible.

First, it’s a single- or double-sided step ladder. One or two people can use it at once in the A-frame position but it doesn’t mean that one person can simply lean the folded ladder against a wall. Always unfold it to the A-frame position for use as a step ladder. If the ladder remains folded and leaned against a wall, there’s a tendency for it to tip backward when you’re on the bottom rung.

The Werner Multi-Position Pro Ladder transforms into an extension ladder using the oversized push knobs.

Werner MT-14IAA ladder adjust

Four flared legs make the base and top wider than the rest of the ladder. This stabilizes the ladder as your weight shifts on ascent and descent. It also affords you a little leeway if you accidentally (and dangerously!) get a shoulder outside the main rail.

Using the Werner MT-14IAA Ladder Against Walls

By extending one side of the Werner ladder farther than the other in the A-frame position, it becomes a wall ladder with the short side flush against the wall and the climbing side angled toward it. This configuration gets you close to your work without leaning over or away from the ladder. However, it angles the rungs downward by about 18°, making for less secure footing than the normal ~0°.

Werner Multi-Position Pro Ladder wall

As the name implies, the stairway ladder configuration allows you to negotiate steps. This is particularly helpful for cleaning gutters above a porch, painting, changing stairwell light bulbs, and more.

Werner Multi-Position Pro Ladder stairs

Finally, the inner and outer rails separate to form both sides of a scaffolding base with no extra tools required. While not unique to Werner ladders, I find this feature remarkably handy and efficient.

Werner ladder scaffolding

The ladder weighs a fairly light 23.5 pounds. It fully collapses into a very compact package that stores and transports easily.

A <25-lb Ladder with a 375-lb Load Capacity

The Werner Multi-Position Pro Ladder achieves its excellent performance with its new Powerlite Rails, improved J-locks, and telescoping design. Powerlite keeps the aluminum ladder to 23.5 pounds while allowing its 375-pound load capacity. The four aluminum J-locks are spring-loaded, passing through the inner and outer rails and securely holding the ladder in position. Its telescoping design easily extends and collapses as you lock or release the independently-moving J-locks. Just be sure you’re holding the inner rails when you release the last J-lock to protect your hands.

Werner Multi-Position Pro Ladder adjust

The Werner ladder is literally capped off with mar-resistant feet. Just be sure to brush them off when moving from outside work to inside work in case there’s rough debris that could damage floors or stairs.

How Much Does the Werner Multi-Position Pro Ladder Cost?

The Werner Multi-Position Pro Ladder is available in 14 (reviewed), 18, 22, and 26-foot models. Our version, the MT-14IAA, will set you back a very reasonable $124. Here’s a look at some of the competition (some with less than a 375-pound load capacity).

  • Gorilla GLMPX-13: $119
  • Tacklife 17-ft Multi-Use Ladder: $159.97
  • Louisville Ladder L-2098-13: $142.15
  • Werner MT-14IAA: $124
  • Little Giant, 15413-001: $149.98

The Bottom Line

The Werner Multi-Position Pro Ladder series functions flawlessly as five ladders in one with sixteen height adjustments. You get a step ladder that two people can use at once with its 375-pound load capacity, an extension ladder, a wall ladder, a stair ladder, and scaffolding bases. Its flared legs, aluminum J-locks, and beefy hinge system give you stability on ascent and descent. For Pros and DIYers alike, we find this an indispensable climbing and safety tool at a reasonable price.

Clearly, not every ladder can or should be replaced by a telescopic model. Still, it’s hard to deny that we love telescoping ladders around here. Why? Portability, weight, and convenience make the top of our list. The Lionladder telescoping ladder arrives at a decent price and has the build quality to make for a convenient tool to keep in your work vehicle.

Lionladder Telescoping Ladder Portability

The Lionladder telescoping ladder comes in three heights (8.7. 10.5, and 12.5 feet). We chose the 12.5-foot version, and it promises a truly compact design that still fulfills the ANSI Type 1 rating (250 lbs capacity). The models break down as follows:

  • Lionladder 8.5 ft. ladder – 17.4 lbs – Price: $69.99
  • 10.5 ft. Lionladder – 22.5 lbs – Price: $89.99
  • Lionladder 12.5 ft. ladder – 28.4 lbs – Price: $129.99

Our 12.5 foot telescoping ladder collapses down to just 2.8 feet in height when not in use. Other models are very similar. And we thought the 3-piece 6 foot 4 inch Werner D6216-3 16-foot ladder was impressive! A cinch strap with clip ensures the ladder doesn’t open up accidentally during travel.

Lionladder telescoping ladder clip

Because it stores in such a small space, the telescopic Lionladder can fit in the trunk of your sedan, or the back seat of your small SUV. You don’t need a ladder rack, and you don’t need to lower your back seat and feed it through the trunk. That never ends well, anyway…trust us.

Weight

This particular Lionladder model features aluminum construction and weighs just 28.4 lbs. Compare that against some other similarly-sized ladders:

  • Little Giant 13-foot Velocity Multi-use Ladder – 25 lbs – Price: $149.98
  • Toprung 12ft. 2IN1 Aluminum Extension Ladder – 21.4 lbs – Price: $129.97
  • Louisville FE3216 16 ft. Extension Ladder – 30 lbs – Price: Price: $235.00
  • Giantex 12.5 ft. Multi Purpose Folding Step Ladder Platform – 28 lbs – Price: $82.99

While not the lightest ladder in the group, it beats a 16 foot fiberglass model. It also packs up considerably smaller than the rest of these extension and multi-use models.

Features and Warnings

One thing to note—the ladder collapses completely. No spacers or bumpers exist between the steps. While you get some additional space-savings here, it also presents a pinch hazard. If you do bungle the close, or the ladder somehow allows for a more rapid collapse—either over time or due to an event—you could conceivably pinch a finger or toe between the steps.

Lionladder telescopic ladder roof

This ladder indicates—with an anodized red aluminum step—its maximum step height. This is put in place so you ensure enough of the ladder rises above the work platform. OSHA requires portable ladders to have their side rails extend at least 3 feet above the upper landing surface to which the ladder is used to gain access.

Using the Lionladder Telescopic Ladder

While the portability and weight of the Lionladder telescoping ladder equate to convenience, more can be said. You raise up the ladder rung-by-rung and each step locks in place as it goes up. More than that, however, Lionladder did something smart with their release mechanism. The ladder doesn’t drop quickly and pinch your fingers when you release each step. Instead, when you press the red buttons to lower each segment, they close gently as air escapes from the tubular legs.

Lionladder telescoping ladder

In order to use the ladder at anything other than full extension, you need to extend starting from the top. This makes sense, and we found it intuitive. The reason for this is that once you begin the collapsing process, all subsequent steps below will also collapse as the step above hits the red trigger and activates it. We shortened the ladder by a couple of steps simply by leaving the bottom two rungs closed.

Lionladder Telescoping Ladder Review Conclusion

We used the Lionladder telescoping ladder to reach an aluminum roof for some pool-side gutter cleaning. It’s tall enough for any typical 8-9 foot wall. For anything larger, you’ll need an actual extension ladder. While it’s possible to make a longer telescopic ladder, I think 12.5 feet probably makes sense as the top size for this type of device. Any larger and it becomes unwieldy and defeats the purpose. Check out how easily it fits into the back seat of our work truck:

Lionladder telescopic ladder vehicle

The price on this telescoping ladder is about right at $129.99, though there are less-expensive brands online. So far, we can only speak to the quality of this model, which seems very well-built. It’s also one of the most compact designs on the market.

Are you going to replace all of your extension ladders? Absolutely not. Will it serve as a nice addition to your ladder collection? Unquestionably. If you want a super-compact ladder between 8 and 12.5 feet, we find it hard not to recommend this one.

Werner LeanSafe Ladder Loves a Good Stud to Lean On

You take your chances when you try to lean a standard stepladder against a wall, stud, pole, or corner. But the new Werner LeanSafe ladder laughs at these obstacles to your productivity. With its corner hugging design and no-mar pad, you don’t need to risk your neck trying to get the job done.

10-Second Summary

  • Designed to lean against walls, studs, poles, and corners or stand alone as an A-frame ladder
  • Single latch locks the rear to the front rail to keep the ladder in leaning mode
  • Non-conductive fiberglass side rails
  • 300 lb load capacity
  • Available in 4’–12′ heights (8’–16′ reach)
  • $109.99–$299.99

Werner LeanSafe Features

If you take a look at the design at the head of the LeanSafe, you’ll notice the main talking point surrounding this ladder. Werner uses a rubber no-mar pad along the face of the head, as well as a padded cut-out, that allows you to lean the ladder against finished walls, inside and outside corners, poles, and studs.

Werner LeanSafe Ladder

This isn’t just a leaning ladder—it’s also an A-frame. What makes it work both ways is moving the pivot point below the top so only the no-mar padding touches the wall when you lean into a corner and there’s no brace in the way when you lean into a stud.

Additional Features

AWerner LeanSafe Ladderdding to the overall security features, Werner fits this ladder with their Edge 360 footpads. These curved, no-mar pads maximize the surface contact with the ground, leading to a more stable laddering experience.

Werner has uses 7 layers of non-conductive fiberglass for the rails and full aluminum bracing. Every step is knee braced, and the Werner LeanSafe has rear horizontal braces every 12″. A dropped rail pivot point also adds to the overall stability.

It has a 300 lb max load capacity, so even a big guy with his gear can safely climb.

Final Thoughts

This isn’t the first wall- and stud-hugging ladder we’ve seen recently, but we appreciate the design because it’s really helpful around studs and corners. It’s kind of a wonder that this design wasn’t old-hat 20 years ago—it seems like a no-brainer.

Little Giant King Kombo Offers Lightweight, Highly Functional Design

The new Little Giant King Kombo packs 3 ladder styles into 1 lightweight design. They claim it’s the first of its kind and there’s little room for argument there. But is just a gimmick or did Little Giant make a giant step forward to expand what a dual-purpose ladder can be?

Pros

  • 3-in-1 design: A-frame, extension, and leaning ladder
  • Built-in V-bar grips for corners, studs, and poles
  • Type 1AA with 375 load rating
  • Hi-viz green fiberglass rails make for a lightweight design (24 pounds)
  • Ground Cue bar gives you an audible click when you reach the bottom step
  • Excellent value compared to what you get from Werner in a similar price range

Cons

  • Highest A-frame standing height won’t let you reach volume ceilings away from the walls

Recommendation

The Little Giant King Kombo’s lightweight 3-in-1 design with its V-bar grips for corners and studs makes this a fantastic go-to ladder for Pros and DIYers. Pros and some DIYers still need a larger A-frame ladder to cover work on volume ceilings and extension ladder access above 10-1/2′. The ladder meets or exceeds OSHA and ANSI standards in all three positions, so there’s no issue if it comes into question.

Capacity and Sizes

All of the Little Giant King Kombo models carry IAA ratings for 375 pounds. There will be multiple heights with the full line launching by the end of June.

  • Professional: 5-8′ available now, 6-10′ available now, 8-14′ available June 2019
  • Industrial: 6-10′ available now, 8-14′ available June 2019
  • Technical: 6-10′ available April 2019, 8-14′ available June 2019

Our Industrial 6-10 model weighs just 24 pounds with its fiberglass rails. I’ve been knocking out a ton of projects on my to-do list all over the house. With so many little things to do, the lighter weight makes moving from one project to the next a lot easier. It’s also that much easier to put in the truck and move from site to site.

Little Giant King Kombo Ladder

If there’s a trade-off here, it’s in reach. With a max standing height of 3’9″ on the 6-10 (5’8″ on the 8-14), most of us can’t reach the top of a volume ceiling. You can still use the extension to work around the walls with your feet at 6’9″ (10’7″ on the 8-14), but the center of those rooms are out of reach.

Feature Set

3 Ladders in 1

The Little Giant King Kombo 3-in-1 Extension Ladder is useable in 3 positions. Collapsed, you can lean it against a wall. Push the orange button on either side to swing the legs apart and they’ll pop back into place to give you an A-frame ladder.

Little Giant King Kombo Ladder

Push them in again and keep swinging the legs around to get an extension ladder.

Little Giant King Kombo Ladder

One of the things I really like about the design is that it’s simple in the way it swings and locks. There are no sliding parts that become potential pinch points.

We’re using the 6-10 Industrial model, so it’s a 6′ A-frame ladder and a 10′ extension ladder.

Ground Cue

On the bottom rung, there’s an orange piece that gives an audible click when you step on it. It’s loud enough that it might annoy your wife while she’s trying to read, but it’s really helpful for letting you know you’re on the last step on the way down.

Little Giant King Kombo Ladder Little Giant King Kombo Ladder

I’ve been using the ladder for more than a month with no issues so far, but I’m curious how this moving, clacking part will hold up over a longer period of time.

V-Bar

Near the top step is a wall pad that helps protect finished surfaces when you use it as a leaning ladder. Flip that 180º and the V-bar presents itself. The design allows you to securely lean on inside or outside corners, studs, or poles.

Little Giant King Kombo Ladder Little Giant King Kombo Ladder

There’s a second V-bar on the extension side for the same purpose.

Little Giant King Kombo Ladder

It’s something that you might not realize you want until you use it. Standard practice is to set your ladder up on one side of a corner and turn into to do the work. The V-bar lets you work straight on like you do on any other work surface and a feature I really like.

Stud-Friendly Design

When you’re using the ladder as an A-frame, the back side is narrow enough to fit between 16″ studs. Of course, you can always use the V-bar and lean into one of the studs, but you have the security of all four feet on the ground this way.

Additional Features

  • Little Giant King Kombo LadderHeavy-duty, field replaceable feet
  • Replaceable wall pad feet
  • Rail shields
  • Shock-absorbing braces
  • Flared sides improve stability
  • Hi-viz green is easier for coworkers and drivers to see onsite
  • Fiberglass has a compound to resist weather and UV rays

3 Styles

The model we’re reviewing is the Little Giant King Combo Industrial. The only difference between it and the Technical is that the Technical gets swivel feet and the Industrial’s are fixed.

Moving down to the Professional model, you lose a few features. You don’t get:

  • Ground Cue
  • Field replaceable feet/swivel feet
  • V-Bar
  • Extension Stud Grab
  • Rail shields
  • Shock-absorbing braces

Pricing

Each style and size differs in price (no shock there). Here’s what you can expect to pay:

  • 5-8 Professional: $139.99
  • 6-10 Professional: $160.99
  • 6-10 Industrial: $184.99
  • 8-14 Professional: $232.99
  • 8-14 Industrial: $262.99

Note: many online retailers have a special handling charge for ladders.

Little Giant claims this is the only 3-in-1 ladder like this, so they don’t have much direct competition. Werner’s DP6206 is similar in size with an A-frame extension combo for $179.99. However, it’s only a Type 1A (300 pounds) and doesn’t have anything like the V-bar. For another $5, you get all the bells and whistles of the 6-10 Industrial, which is a pretty sweet deal for that little of a price bump.

The Bottom Line

The Little Giant King Kombo’s lightweight 3-in-1 design with its V-bar grips for corners and studs makes this a fantastic go-to ladder for Pros and DIYers. Pros and some DIYers still need a larger A-frame ladder to cover work on volume ceilings and extension ladder access above 10-1/2′. The ladder meets or exceeds OSHA and ANSI standards in all three positions, so there’s no issue if it comes into question.
