I’ve used a lot of LED job site lights, but it’s been a long time since I pulled out a halogen light to illuminate an area. There’s simply no reason to have to deal with the cool-down time and fragile nature of halogen lamps now that LED has matured enough to be practical and affordable. The Maxxeon Workstar 5000 Lumenator LED light is a simply-designed solution for lighting up a large work area with 1800 lumens of cool white light. When testing out a work light, I look for several things including how bright it is and how evenly it throws light. In the case of the Maxxeon Luminator, it’s got ample light output, and I loved the even dispersion that fills the entire workspace without any hot spots. You don’t always find this to be the case with a traditional halogen work light. You also don’t find many work lights that have a protective rubber surround and which can handle 2-meter drops and typical job site dust.
The Workstar 5000 also has a High and Low mode which is activated by the red weatherproof pushbutton on the rear of the light. In Low, the Lumenator LED light puts out 600 lumens, but in High, you get around 1800 lumens. That’s on par with most portable single panel and multi-chip LED lights we’ve seen. What sets the Maxxeon Workstar 5000 Lumenator apart is its metal construction and durability. The heat sinks are built right into the metal frame of the work light, and the user-replaceable battery is accessed by removing four Allen screws from the rear side. The light also includes a bracket which lets it easily affix to the optional telescopic tripod.
That telescoping tripod can take the Maxxeon Lumenator light from about 2-1/2 feet in height to 5 feet 8 inches. One additional accessory that we liked was the powerful Neodymium magnetic base which can attach to the nylon handle and let you attach the WorkStar 5000 to any ferrous metal surface. The magnet is extremely strong and is a great accessory if you work around I-beams, the walls in steel buildings, or construction equipment.

Using the Maxxeon Workstar 5000 Lumenator
We charged up the Maxxeon Workstar 5000 Lumenator LED work light by plugging in the included charger. The charger is a small DC model that delivers a slow charge, taking three to five hours to completely recharge the pack depending on how low it was depleted. We used the Maxxeon light to illuminate our work area while rebuilding the engine on a Chevy Trailblazer. It not only provides a ton of light, but it also did so with a nice, even wash of white light that allowed us to see everything more clearly. It gave us a great way to continue working in the evening with some specific light directly right on the motor.
