Metabo HPT 10,000-Lumen Work Light Delivers Incredible Output And Durability

Whether you’re working in unlit spaces or during the shorter days of winter, having a quality work light is essential. We’ve been using the Metabo HPT 18V 10,000-Lumen LED Work Light and there’s a ton to talk about. Take a closer look and see if it’s a good fit for your jobsite.

Metabo HPT 10,000 Lumen Work Light Performance

10,000 Lumens

First of all, this light produces a ton of output—10,000 lumens worth on the high end using 216 LED chips. As cordless work lights go, that’s about as bright as you can hope for.

You don’t always need that much light and thankfully, Metabo HPT put more than just a high, medium, and low on this one. The power button on the back doubles as the output dial with 15 settings to dial in the amount of light you need. It can dial all the way back to 1000 lumens, meaning you don’t necessarily need to carry as many lights to cover different working distances.

The dial doesn’t have stops at the top or bottom of the range. When you hit either one, the light blinks to let you know you can go no further.

The throw is broad and lights up a large area at full brightness. It’s also a very clean, neutral light, showing off colors exactly as they are. Our friend, Gregory Mills might even be impressed enough to use it on some of the works over at the Polk Museum of Art.

Runtime

The runtime you get depends on the battery you use. It’s an 18V product, so you can use either Metabo HPT 18V or MultiVolt batteries for power. Here’s an idea of what you can expect for runtime:

10,000 Lumens

  • 18V 3.0Ah: 36 minutes
  • 18V 5.0Ah: 1 hour, 6 minutes
  • MultiVolt 8.0Ah: 1 hour, 48 minutes

1,000 Lumens

  • 18V 3.0Ah: 5 hours, 30 minutes
  • 18V 5.0Ah: 9 hours
  • MultiVolt 8.0Ah: 14 hours, 30 minutes
AC cord connection

If you have access to power, this is a hybrid light, so you can also run indefinitely if you like. The connection uses a snap lock design, so you need to keep the cord that comes in the box handy. The cord is a little over 10 feet long, letting you avoid an extension cord in some cases.

Metabo HPT 10,000 Lumen Work Light Design Notes

Size and Weight

Metabo HPT 18V MultiVolt 10000-Lumen LED Work Light Review

For its output, the footprint of this light is smaller than you might expect. It’s 12 1/4 inches at its widest point near the base and 12 5/8 inches from top to bottom. With the foot in, it’s 5 3/4 inches deep with the majority of that as battery housing in the center.

It’s 9.0 pounds without the AC cord or a battery. That may seem heavy for a work light, but when you’re pushing 10,000 lumens on the top end, you need heat sinks to keep the temps down near the LED chips. LEDs do run at lower temperatures than halogen bulbs. However, this kind of output gets pretty toasty, even with LEDs.

Works When Others Can’t

Battery Housing

Thanks to the AC connection and a battery housing that includes a gasket, the Metabo HPT 10,000-lumen work light earns an IP56 rating. With that kind of protection, this light can work in conditions that others can’t.

Bonus Charging Port

USB Charging Port

We live in a world where we’re constantly connected and in need of charging options. There’s a USB-A port on the back of the light you can use to charge your phone or tablet. Just keep in mind that it will reduce your runtime when you’re using a battery for power.

Mounting

The base clicks into multiple positions and the battery housing can even let you point the light straight up. If you’re using the light at floor level, you can get light anywhere you need it.

From there, mounting is a bit different than most light. Metabo HPT provides two holes on the outsides of the base stand along with a 5/8-inch tripod mount in the center of it. Most of the time, the tripod threads are directly below the light so it can balance the weight. With this design, the weight sticks out from the mounting point. That’s one reason why there are no 1/4-inch threads.

In the box, there’s a 5/8-inch adapter. If you’re using a tripod with threads less than 20mm long, pop the adapter on it before mounting the light to make sure it stays put.

Additional Highlights

  • 5-bar LED battery level indicator on the back
  • Top carry handle

Metabo HPT 10,000 Lumen Work Light Price

The Metabo HPT 10,000 Lumen Work Light retails for $239 for the bare tool. There are no kit options available at the time of writing. Metabo HPT backs your purchase with a 2-year warranty.

Makita has the only real competition for Metabo HPT with its DML809. Considering it runs $284 as a bare tool, Metabo HPT’s price is pretty attractive.

The Bottom Line

If you need a bright work light, Metabo HPT’s hybrid 18V 10,000-lumen LED work light is the best we’ve seen so far. Its output is strong with a super-clean throw. With 15 output settings and an IP56 rating, it’s also highly versatile and appropriate in a wide range of working distances and environments.
