Crescent Lufkin Shockforce G2 Tape Measures Deliver Tough Performance

The Crescent Lufkin Shockforce G2 Tape Measures include some crazy durability claims. How crazy? How about 100-foot drop-testing crazy! It comes in both regular and Nite Eye versions (remember the Lufkin Black Widow tape?) and we put it through more than just our standard tape measure tests.

Pros

  • Incredibly durable design
  • Diamond abrasive on the hook grips better than slick coatings
  • Redesigned belt clip
  • Reinforced holes are ready for tethering

Cons

  • On the expensive side
  • Tough blade to throw

Editor’s Note: Think you know everything about tapes? Check out our article on how to read a tape measure and we promise you’ll learn something new!

Crescent Shockforce G2 Tape Measure Durability

The Crescent Lufkin Shockforce G2 Tape Measure boasts its durability over everything else. In the hand, it’s certainly impressive. Four screws hold the tape together (the 5th in the center just holds the belt clip).

Crescent Lufkin Shockforce G2 Nite Eye

Lufkin also uses four rivets to hold the clip in place instead of the standard 2 or 3. The blade gets a standard nylon coating to prevent scraping off the print. It’ll still happen, it just takes much longer than with cheap tapes.

Rubber overmold covers the majority of the housing and metal roll bars protect the lock. It’s a tough enough build that Lufkin claims you can drop it from 100′. We’ll presume that’s on compacted soil and not concrete or asphalt. In our testing of the first-generation Shockforce tapes, they survived several falls onto concrete until we finally managed to break the tape. These have the exact same build quality.

durability

So yeah, this is a tough tape.

Standout and Throw

Crescent Lufkin claims a 14′ standout for these measuring tapes. We didn’t quite get that far, but we did manage to eke out more than 12 feet. Looking back at our last best tape measure review article, that’s pretty competitive! Even without trying hard, you’ll repeatably get around 11′ 8″ of standout every time—at least until the tape breaks in a bit.

The throw is a bit different, and arguably not as important. The internal spring lets the tape spin faster inside than it comes out, creating a backlash effect. As with the first-generation Shockforce tapes, these are stiff. In fact, I could only get these to consistently throw between 55-64″. That’s well short of the 96″ length of sheet materials.

I’m not all that worried about the throw, personally. Just know that it’s tough to use that way if it’s something you expect your tapes to do.

Crescent Lufkin Shockforce G2 Tape Measure Accuracy

The printed marks are 1/16″ and you have your standard bold stud highlights every 16″ and truss diamonds every 19-3/16″. Read our article on tape measure markings if those don’t sound familiar to you.

Things started off well on our Lixer Master measuring tape calibration. Both the standard and Nite Eye versions of the Crescent Lufkin Shockforce Tape Measure were dead on at 6″.

Additional Crescent Shockforce G2 Tape Measure Features

Blades

If it’s not already obvious, you have two choices when it comes to your blade. There’s a standard black on yellow and the Nite Eye hi-viz green on black we saw with the Black Widow. I personally like the Nite Eye printing, but both are easy to read.

Crescent Lufkin ShockForce Tape Measure

Using red for the regular Shockforce G2 and hi-viz green for the Nite Eye, stud points get a large highlight every 16″ and the truss marks use standard diamonds.

Hook

Crescent Lufkin keeps the 360º hook from their Black Widow measuring tape, and it does a nice job of grabbing on the top, bottom, and both sides. They also put a diamond abrasive grip on the bottom half that helps it grip better than slick coatings.

Crescent Lufkin ShockForce Tape Measure

Clip

Crescent Lufkin reinforced the stamped steel belt clip on the Shockforce G2 tape measures. They also added a handy tab at the top that lets you apply pressure when sliding it on and off your belt or favorite tool rig. This marks a huge improvement over the original model which we found difficult to clip onto our belts.

revised belt clip
Crescent Lufkin Shockforce G2 tape with redesigned belt clip and Auto-Lock

Tether Ready

Reinforced holes at the back are ready to receive a tether when working at height.

Lock

The lock is a standard design, bringing its plastic shield down to hold the tape in place. It holds as well as anyone else’s. They also have an Auto-Lock model that automatically locks the tape in place until you release it with the front-mounted button.

Price

On our 25′ models, the standard Crescent Lufkin Shockforce G2 Tape Measure runs $30 and the Nite Eye version is $28. That’s a premium price, but well in line with other premium brands. The DeWalt premium XP measuring tape retails for a similar $28, and it’s among the most expensive for major brands, though others like Tajima can go higher.

The Bottom Line

These are some of the most durable tapes we’ve tested and they have a satisfyingly long standout. With two blade patterns and multiple lengths to choose from, they’re definitely in the conversation with the top names. If there’s any hesitation, it’s in the stiffness of the tape and whether you want to pay a premium price.

I like the Crescent Lufkin Shockforce G2 Tape Measure for Pros and DIYers who value durability. However, if you have a hard time keeping track of your tapes, you might consider something with a lower cost of entry.

Hilti 12V Green Cross Line Laser Level Targets Jobsite Tough Design

We’ve been super-excited about Hilti Nuron cordless tools, but today we’re shifting our attention to the 12V line. The Hilti 12V green cross line laser level is on our radar, and we wanted to see how the PM 20-CG A12 compares to other lasers we use.

Pros

  • Excellent accuracy
  • Higher visibility and longer range than most green lasers
  • Durable IP54 construction
  • Rechargeable lithium-ion power source

Cons

  • Cost is a bit high for price-sensitive buyers

Hilti 12V Green Cross Line Laser Level Design

Power Source

As you take a tour of this laser, one of the first things to note is that it runs on a Hilti 12V battery. That makes it more expensive than models that use alkaline batteries on the front end, but there are some very real benefits.

Hilti 12V Green Cross Line Laser Review PM 20-CG A12

For one, you’re not throwing away a set of batteries every day. Plus, the cost of those alkalines starts to add up over time.

Using a 4.0Ah battery, one Hilti 12V battery has up to 33 hours of runtime—enough juice to get you through multiple days on the job. It’s far more convenient and less wasteful than using AA or AAA batteries.

Lines and Points

The Hilti PM 20-CG A12 is a cross line and point laser. The vertical line covers 200° and the horizontal beam offer 160°. A simple press of the V/H button on top cycles between both, horizontal only, and vertical only beams.

Hilti 12V Green Cross Line Laser Review PM 20-CG A12

In addition to the center point you get where the beams cross, there are also top/bottom plumb spots and left/right spot at 90° to the laser.

Like most lasers we work with, you can lock the diode to work with slopes or let it self-level up to 4°. The beams blink if you’re outside the self-leveling range.

Accuracy

Hilti dialed in the accuracy to ±0.12-inch at 33 feet (1/8-inch). That’s dead on the professional standard we expect from our lasers, though we have tested ones that are slightly more accurate.

Visibility and Range

Thanks to the green laser, you get more visible range than red lasers. In optimal conditions, expect to see the beam up to an impressive 131 feet. You can extend that out to a full 328 feet using Hilti’s PMA 32 laser detector.

Hilti Laser Detector

To put that in context, most of the green lasers we use are visible to around 115 feet and roughly 260 feet with a detector, so you’re getting some range extension with Hilti’s beam.

Mounting

On its own, you can set the laser on the ground or mount it to a tripod with 1/4-inch threads. Hilti also packs the PMA 89 bracket in the box that includes magnets, a keyhole, 1/4-inch tripod threads, and 5/8-inch tripod threads along with some elevation adjustment, making it more versatile.

Hilti Laser Mounting Bracket

Environmentally Friendly

Most of what we’ve covered so far has been very good, but not necessarily above and beyond what other brands have to offer. Where Hilti raises the bar compared to the competition is with its jobsite readiness. Both the battery and laser have overmolding to offer some protection against bumps and falls.

What’s more impressive is the IP54 ingress rating the PM 20-CG A12 earns. According to the IP rating scale, that means dust can’t get in on a level that affects operation and splashing water won’t hurt it. Can your cross line laser do that?

Additional Highlights

  • Beams blink when the battery is nearly out of juice
  • Class 2 laser (no precautionary measure required)
  • Receiver mode for longer distance measuring with a laser detector

Additional Options

We really like this model as a go-to laser level for Pros who need reliability and the longer runtime of a lithium-ion power source. However, there are a couple of other options to if this isn’t quite what you need.

  • PM 20-CG: Identical specifications with a AA-battery power source
  • PM 20-CGE: Increases the accuracy to 1/16-inch over 33 feet

Hilti 12V Green Cross Line Laser Level Price

If you already have batteries and a charger, the laser with the mounting bracket and soft case is $460.80. You can customize your kit from there, and Hilti recommends a pair of 2.6Ah batteries and charger to go with it. That configuration runs $577.30.

If you’re using Hilti’s fleet services, that’s $18.00 per month for just the laser or $22.25 per month for the kit.

The laser is part of Hilti’s 20-2-1 warranty program, including calibrations for the first two years. Hilti Fleet Services include unlimited calibrations.

The Bottom Line

Hilti has taken an excellent foundation and applied their reputation for tough, jobsite-ready tools to create the Hilti 12V green cross line laser. While the PM 20-CG A12’s price may be higher than some of the competition, so is its survivability, and it only takes one of the other guy’s lasers failing to make Hilti’s quality worth the price.

Hilti 12V Green Cross Line Laser Level Specifications

Expect Longer Line Life With the OX Tools Kevlar Line Aluminum Chalk Reel

You may think there’s not much to chalk reels—simply apply some chalk to a piece of string and snap it onto your working material for an instant, straight guideline. OX wants to change how you think of these tools and the convenience they provide. The OX Tools Kevlar Line Aluminum Chalk Reel features some upgrades from previous iterations, making it as convenient as possible for every Pro to use. We got one in our hands to find out how this version stands out.

OX Tools Kevlar Line Chalk Reel Design

Kevlar Line

This chalk reel features a material upgrade to the string line itself. It uses genuine DuPont Kevlar as line reinforcement, making it stronger and more abrasion-resistant than standard chalk reels. In fact, the braided Kevlar string featured on this model is up to 20 times stronger than previous models, according to OX.

Hook

OX also made improvements to the non-slip ox-horn hook, providing more leverage on your material’s edge.

As for the rest of the build, OX the housing withstands tough jobsite conditions. Its aluminum case provides durability and holds up to drops and bumps, keeping the internals from taking damage during everyday use.

It features a 6:1 gear ratio for quick reel-in action. We found reeling the line back in to be remarkably fast and easy. Even with the full 100-foot line length out, you can reel it back in just a few seconds.

Additionally, there is a push-button clutch that preserves the gears during line extraction. This allows the line to be let out more quickly and comes in handy especially if you know you’re going to need a longer string length.

Additional Features

  • Steel crank
  • Matte black coating keeps outer casing cool, even after sitting in the sun
  • Ergonomic grip designed for all-day comfort

OX Tools Kevlar Line Chalk Reel Price

This chalk reel retails for $14.98 for the bare tool and you can find it at several retailers. OX doesn’t pack it with chalk, so you’ll have to purchase that separately. OX Tools backs your purchase with a 90-day warranty.

In nearly any construction-related trade, one of the most universally used tools is the tape measure. The Stanley FatMax Tape Measure is among the most popular tool we see on the jobsite bar none. With an 11-foot unsupported stand out thanks to a wider and thicker blade, one person can measure what sometimes would require two people. The folks at Stanley also designed this tape measure to take real-world jobsite abuse.

Editor’s Note: Think you know everything about tapes? Check out our article on how to read a tape measure and we promise you’ll learn something new!

Stanley FatMax Tape Measure Features

Having used and reviewed the best tape measures, I’ve pretty much seen it all. Everything from battery-operated, motorized versions to simple inexpensive tapes. In my personal tool collection, however, I keep going back to my Stanley FatMax tape measures. My two favorite sizes are the 16-foot and my 25-foot tapes. The 16-foot model comes in handy for doing smaller projects like trim and building things in my shop. I use the larger, 25-foot model when building decks and framing homes or additions.

I picked up some new Stanley FatMax Tape Measures the other day to replace one that got concrete all over the blade. That’s what I get for lending my tools to a mason!

What is the Standout on the Stanley Fatmax Tape Measure?

The Stanley FaxMax tape measure has an 11-foot unsupported blade standout. That may be one of its best features.

A long standout matters—particularly when working alone. Using a tape measure like the Stanley Fatmax with a long standout means you can quickly and easily take measurements without someone needing to hold or place the “dumb” end of the tape.

Stanley Fat Max Standout

Stanley Fatmax Tape Measure Features

Durable Blade Coating

Stanley coated the entire length of the blade with a Mylar polyester film which helps to protect the blade and helps it last longer. The first 5 inches or so of the blade, closest to the tip, has an extra cover. Stanley used to call this BladeArmor. This industrial thermoplastic layer covers the most-abused portion of the blade and strengthens this section to help reduce breakage. It works similarly to the Milwaukee Tool nylon blade coating on their tape measure line.

Blade Lock and Wide Body

The blade lock is a simple push-pull thumb switch that is a little tight to engage when the tape is new; but after some use, it really gets easier to operate. The outside shell of the tape is made of ABS plastic with at least 85% of the outside covered with black overmold rubber to give grip and also cushion the tape should you drop it on a hard surface – and you will.

One thing quickly jumps out to folks not familiar with the Stanley FatMax line of tapes. They are FAT! Since the blade is a full 1-1/4” wide, it makes the body of the tape measure wider. Should you have small hands, it might take a while to get used to the larger size. We are pretty sure though, that once you do get used to the size, you will never go back to your old tape measure.

Testing and Use

Stanley 33-725 FatMax 25 foot Tape Measure application
Stanley 33-725 FatMax 25 foot Tape Measure

Testing the Stanley 33-725 FatMax 25-foot Tape Measure was easy. For one of my recent projects, I whipped it out to measure some studs for a wall framing project. FatMax tapes have been a part of my tool collection for a long time. I consider them old friends. We have seen some users gripe that the overall curvature of the extended blade is a little excessive. This holds especially true when compared to other 3/4″ and 1″ wide tapes.

The reason for the complaints is that when you need to make very accurate cuts, you need to twist the tape blade slightly. This lets the edge rest against the material being cut. With other narrower tapes, this is not quite as noticeable. With most, the blade lacks this extreme curvature.

Fat Max, Fat Body

Also, they are quick to point out how fat the tape measure body is too. But then they quickly realize the trade-offs that come with the fatter blade too. Like how the extra curvature actually makes the blade stiffer when it is extended out to its limits and how it is not floppy at all. What we found interesting is that even though the packaging claimed 11 feet; we actually got it out to nearly 12 feet with no support.

We suspect that after some break-in time this length will diminish some. The retracting spring is plenty powerful enough too, and if you are not careful, it will whip the metal tape in at a rather fast rate. The packaging suggests not letting the tape slam into the body to help extend the life of the tool. We found that the tip is easy to latch onto the end of most of the materials that we measured thanks to its shape.

Conclusion

All in all, the Stanley FatMax Tape Measure lineup still proves itself a staple of the jobsite. While not perfect, it combines some of the most important qualities that a tape measure needs. We like the long stand-out and extra stiffness of the blade. The simple blade lock and easy-to-read measurements also prove a consistent advantage. It tops our performance scales as a great rugged jobsite measuring tool.

About the only negative comes with the price. Unless you land a sale, the Stanley Fatmax tape measure typically comes at a premium cost vs the competition. Expect to pay between $17 and $35 depending on the model you choose.

Milwaukee Cross Line Laser Levels Will Leave Others Green with Envy

BOOM! Just like that, Milwaukee broke into the line laser sector with gusto and we’ve got everything you need to know about the Milwaukee cross line laser level lineup!

Pros

  • Green beams in all laser levels
  • Two power sources to choose from—M12 or RedLithium USB
  • Seven designs to choose from
  • Full-day runtime in each model (8-hour minimum)
  • New micro-adjust dials in positions easily and quickly
  • Laser pivots on the plumb spot so it doesn’t move while you adjust
  • 1/8-inch per 33 feet accuracy

Cons

  • More expensive than some of the competition if all you need is the basics

Milwaukee Cross Line Laser Visibility

Every Milwaukee cross line laser uses a green beam to get the best visibility. The design team also worked up a new form of the standard target card to make seeing your line easier when you’re dealing with a brighter area.

It has better visibility with a high-contrast design that makes it easier to see when you’ve hit the center. It’s also magnetic and has standard and metric measurements.

Milwaukee Target Card

Green beams come with a couple of trade-offs. For starters, they’re more power-hungry than red, so your runtime is lower given the same battery sources. They’re also more expensive to produce, so you’ll notice a bit of a premium compared to red lasers.

But they’re so much easier to see that we’re willing to accept those trades to get better visibility.

Milwaukee Cross Line Laser Accuracy

Milwaukee cross line laser

Milwaukee dialed in the accuracy of the diodes at 1/8-inch for every 33 feet. That’s dead-on what we expect from professional laser levels in this class. Some models drop to 1/4-inch over 33 feet or worse, giving Milwaukee better accuracy than entry-level models.

Power Sources and Runtime

Milwaukee is targeting two types of power sources: alkaline and lithium-ion. The irony is they’re doing it solely with lithium-ion power.

Milwaukee RedLithium USB Laser Levels

Milwaukee RedLithium USB cross line laser models are designed to replace the ones Pros use with alkaline batteries. Using up to 4 AA batteries for power, heavy line laser users might go through two or three sets of batteries a week.

Milwaukee Laser Level

Even though these Milwaukee laser levels run $50 – $100 more than alkaline, there’s a value proposition worth considering.

Let’s say you’re on the conservative side and use just one set of batteries a week. A pack of 48 Energizer batteries runs a little over $20 on Amazon. That’s enough to get you through 12 weeks. You’re going to need four of those over the course of the year (plus a little, but we’ll give you some vacation time), costing you $80. Your return on investment for going lithium is about a year or less.

If you’re that heavier user running through three sets of batteries a week, you’re in it for $240 a year. You’ve almost paid for the whole laser by the end of year 1.

So what about that runtime? Milwaukee’s RedLithium USB batteries will run for more than 8 hours in the cross line lasers and 15 hours in the 3-point model.

Thanks to USB charging and the ability to run while charging, you can easily use an M18 or M12 battery with a USB adapter as a power source. That will extend your runtime significantly.

M18 Battery Adapter

Milwaukee M12 Cross Line Lasers

For compatibility with Milwaukee’s compact cordless tools, go with one of Milwaukee’s M12 models. These line up more closely with the lithium-ion competition out there in terms of runtime.

Milwaukee M12 Cross Line Laser

Using a 3.0Ah battery in the cross line/point laser or a 4.0Ah battery in the 3-plane model, you can expect 15 hours of continuous use.

Setup Simplified

One of the major highlights on each Milwaukee laser level is a micro-adjust for the vertical beam. We’ve used plenty of lasers with a micro-adjust on the mount for horizontal height, just not on the vertical plane.

Milwaukee Cross Line Laser Level Review

Most of the time, you make adjustments by hand and there’s a lot of wobble along with simply overshooting your mark from across the room. With Milwaukee’s adjustment, it’s much smoother and more precise so you can get it right more quickly.

The other issue that pops up from adjusting most lasers by hand comes from the using the plumb spot to dial in a starting position. As you make your side-to-side adjustment, the plumb spot moves, too. The design team put their pivot right on the plumb spot, so you can make that vertical line adjustment without shifting your floor reference.

Jobsite Ready

Sensitive diodes, jobsites, and less-than-careful crew members don’t necessarily get along. However, Milwaukee designed these laser levels with 1 meter (3.3 feet) drop protection and with an IP54 ingress rating.

Milwaukee Cross Line Laser Level Options

There are currently seven laser levels to choose from. Here’s a quick breakdown.

Milwaukee M12 Green Cross Line and 4-Point Laser

Milwaukee M12 Green Cross Line and 4-Point Laser

The newest laser in the lineup is the 3624. It takes the cross line and plumb spot laser concept and adds two additional horizontal squaring spots to the left and right. You get the micro-adjust dial and plumb spot pivoting and the 3.0Ah battery runs the laser for more than 9 hours.

  • Power Source: M12 battery
  • Beams: Horizontal, vertical, plumb spots, and horizontal spots
  • Runtime: 9+ hours
  • Range: 125 feet visible, 165 feet with detector
  • Accuracy: ±1/8-inch at 33 feet
  • Self-Leveling: ±4°
  • Ingress Rating: IP54

Milwaukee M12 Green 360° Single Plane Laser Level

Milwaukee M12 Green 360° Single Plane Laser Level

The other of the new 2022 lasers in the line is the M12 3631. It’s a 360° horizontal single-plane laser that gets up to 30 hours of runtime with a 4.0Ah battery. With a visible range of 125 feet from the laser, you can cover a diameter of 250 feet without a laser detector.

  • Power Source: M12 battery
  • Beams: 360° horizontal
  • Runtime: 30+ hours
  • Range: 125 feet visible, 165 feet with detector
  • Accuracy: ±1/8-inch at 33 feet
  • Self-Leveling: ±4°
  • Ingress Rating: IP54

Milwaukee M12 Green 360° 3-Plane Laser Level

Milwaukee M12 Green 360° 3-Plane Laser Level

Milwaukee’s 3632 is the way to go when you need three 360° lines for layout. Similar to the single plane laser, its two vertical beams and single horizontal beam are visible up to 125 feet from the laser, giving you a visible 250-foot diameter to work with. This model pivots on the top and bottom plumb intersections, making layout baselined on those points easier and faster.

With all three lasers running, the runtime is still more than enough to get you through the day at 15 hours with a 4.0Ah pack.

  • Power Source: M12 battery
  • Beams: 360° horizontal and two 360° vertical
  • Runtime: 15+ hours
  • Range: 125 feet visible, 165 feet with detector
  • Accuracy: ±1/8-inch at 33 feet

Milwaukee M12 Green Cross Line and Plumb Points Laser Level

Milwaukee M12 Green Cross Line and Plumb Points Laser Level

Of all the Milwaukee line lasers, we use the 3622 the most. With its vertical and horizontal cross line combing with plumb spots, it’s versatile across a wide range of trades. The micro-adjust knob pivots on the plumb spots and even though the kit comes with a smaller 3.0Ah battery, it still gets more than 15 hours of runtime.

  • Power Source: M12 battery
  • Beams: 360° horizontal, 360° vertical, and plumb spots
  • Runtime: 15+ hours
  • Range: 125 feet visible, 165 feet with detector
  • Accuracy: ±1/8-inch at 33 feet
  • Self-Leveling: ±4°
  • Ingress Rating: IP54

Milwaukee USB Rechargeable Green Cross Line Laser

Milwaukee 3521

Switching over to the RedLithium USB battery system, Milwaukee’s 3521 is your go-to choice for a horizontal/vertical cross line laser. With the USB battery, the visible range is a little shorter at 100 feet but you still get more than 8 hours on a charge. While there are no plumb spots to pivot on, the micro-adjust mechanism is the same.

  • Power Source: RedLithium USB battery
  • Beams: Horizontal and vertical
  • Runtime: 8+ hours
  • Range: 100 feet visible, 165 feet with detector
  • Accuracy: ±1/8-inch at 33 feet
  • Self-Leveling: ±4°
  • Ingress Rating: IP54

Milwaukee USB Rechargeable Green 3-Point Laser Level

Milwaukee 3510

When all you need are the points, go with Milwaukee’s 3510. It has two plumb spots and a horizontal point that are visible out to 150 feet. Because of how 3-point lasers are used in the field, the base doesn’t have a pivot or micro-adjust knob. However, it gets an impressive 15+ hours out of its RedLithium USB battery.

  • Power Source: RedLithium USB battery
  • Beams: Plumb spots and horizontal spot
  • Runtime: 15+ hours
  • Range: 150 feet visible
  • Accuracy: ±1/8-inch at 33 feet
  • Self-Leveling: ±4°
  • Ingress Rating: IP54

Milwaukee USB Green Cross Line and Plumb Points Laser

Milwaukee 3622

For the same cross line and plumb spot functions as the M12 3622 on the RedLithium USB system, look for the 3522. The visibility is a little lower at 100 feet but your detector range is still 165 feet. The battery is capable of more than 8 hours of runtime and you have the micro-adjust knob and plumb spot pivoting action.

  • Power Source: RedLithium USB battery
  • Beams: 360° horizontal, 360° vertical, and plumb spots
  • Runtime: 8+ hours
  • Range: 100 feet visible, 165 feet with detector
  • Accuracy: ±1/8-inch at 33 feet
  • Self-Leveling: ±4°
  • Ingress Rating: IP54

Available Accessories

Milwaukee Cross Line Laser Level Review

In addition to the lasers, there are a couple of handy accessories worth pointing out.

First is what appears to be a fairly standard magnetic/hangable mount. In reality, the design allows you to attach the laser in 360º, making it easier to find a quick mounting point in nearly any environment.

There’s also a track clip to help you out when you’re working on a drop ceiling or something similar.

The Bottom Line

Milwaukee cross line laser levels have the accuracy and visibility we demand and help speed up the setup process. We like the fact that every model is lithium-ion powered with the runtime to make it through a full 8-hour day. Overall, there’s genuine innovation to be excited about and we expect Milwaukee is going to make a significant impact in the line laser market.

Irwin Strait-Line Tape Measures Promise High Durability And Reach

Tape measures might be consumables, but that doesn’t mean we want to replace them frequently or use junky ones. Many tape measures can’t hold up under the demanding applications of professional work for long. Irwin is challenging this idea with its Strait-Line tape measures. With three different lengths in the lineup, here’s what makes these tape measures a good fit for hardworking tradespeople.

Irwin Strait-Line Tape Measures: The Big Deal

Irwin tells us that you can expect all three models to survive up to an 80-foot drop onto surfaces as hard as packed soil. For blade durability, these tape measures also feature tear protection to further maintain the life of the blade in tough applications.

When you’re on the job, especially working independently, it’s important for your tape measure to have the right reach. Irwin’s Strait-Line tape measures achieve reaches up to 17 feet made up of about 14 feet of standout plus 3 feet additional with your hand supporting the blade. As far as reach goes, 17 feet is fantastic.

One of our favorite features is a finger stop brake and we’re excited that Irwin includes it on these tapes. If you haven’t used one before, it’s an opening in the housing that lets you use your finger to stop or slow down the blade instead of having to use the lock. We use it a ton!

Finally, extra-large printed numbers printed on both sides of the blade ensure added visibility. We prefer double-sided print when we can get it, and on any premium tape measure, it’s a must.

Additional Features

  • Extra-large dual-sided hook grab from multiple directions
  • Balanced retraction for smooth control and comfort
  • Belt clip

Irwin Strait-Line Tape Measures Price

There are three lengths coming with Irwin’s initial launch. The 16-foot model retails for $19.99, the 25-foot model goes for $24.99, and the 35-foot model will cost $29.99. You also have the option to purchase a two-pack of the 25-foot tape measures for $39.99. Irwin backs them all with a limited lifetime warranty.

Klein Compact Laser Distance Measure Offers Simple Operation And Affordable Price

The Klein compact laser distance measure (93LDM100C) has quite a few differences when compared to the discontinued 93LDM65 model and the laser measure built into the NCVT-6 voltage tester. Is simpler better? Let’s take a look.

Using the Klein Compact Laser Distance Measure

Klein 93LDM100C

Range

The red class 2 laser splits the difference between most entry-level and mid-range laser measures and reads from 2 inches up to 100 feet. Considering Klein’s other options, the NCVT-6 voltage tester reaches up to 66 feet and the 93LDM65 hit 98 feet.

Laser Accuracy

The Kelin 93LDM100C is really handy for taking quick measurements on the fly. It’s accurate to within 1/16-inch inside 30 feet and 1/8-inch all the way out to 100 feet. While there are laser measures with higher accuracy, it’s tough to complain about 1/8-inch accuracy for the kind of work most of us use these for.

Measurement Memory

This unit automatically saves the last two measurements on the LCD display screen so you quickly compare past measurements. Some models may store 10 measurements while more advanced models can store hundreds and even use Bluetooth to transmit them. However, when you keep in mind the design intent to simplify the laser’s use, we’re not disappointed.

Single Button Control

Single Button Function

This latest model has a single multi-function button to make adjustments and toggle between settings. Press and hold to turn the unit on. Press once to get a continuous measurement reading and press again to save it. Repeat the process to get second and third measurements. Once you have three measurements on the screen, any new ones will kick the oldest off and replace it.

To change settings, press and hold for about a second and the unit settings come up. Press again to cycle through feet and inches, inches, and metric units.

Press the button two times and you can cycle between measuring from the top of the housing and the base.

There’s an optional sound you can turn on to confirm button presses. You get to that by pressing the button three times.

Press and hold the button for about 3 seconds and the unit shuts down. Any measurements that were on the screen will not be there when you turn it back on. Alternatively, it automatically shuts down after 3 minutes of inactivity.

Size and Weight

Klein Compact Laser Distance Measure

At just 1 3/16 inches wide and 4 5/8 inches long, Klein got the name right in calling it a compact laser measure. It only weighs 2.3 ounces with batteries. With its built-in belt clip, it’s easy to store on your belt or in your pocket, and it won’t take up much space in your tool bag.

Additional Features

  • Reverse contrast display
  • IP54 rating
  • Lanyard anchor (lanyard sold separately)
  • Uses 2 x AAA battery for power

Klein Compact Laser Distance Measure Price

The Klein 93LDM100C retails for $34.97 and comes with a 2-year limited warranty. As laser measures go, that’s pretty inexpensive.

The Bottom Line

Sometimes less is more and we really like the simplicity of Klein’s compact laser measure. It doesn’t have the complex functions, Bluetooth connection, or rechargeable battery that some do and that can be a relief when all you want is to take a quick measurement. If you’re looking for a laser measure with a simple interface with a low price tag, we highly recommend you consider Klein.

Bosch GLM165-27CG Laser Measure Reaches New Heights

Bosch is definitely no stranger to the laser measure scene and they’ve recently introduced a few newcomers to their Blaze lineup. Bosch’s 165-foot laser measures have come a long way since the GLM165-40 we reviewed back in 2018. Today, the Bosch GLM165-27CG 165-foot laser measure boasts impressive technology upgrades for Pros who want more than the basics.

Bosch GLM165-27CG Laser Measure Performance

Accuracy

Tape Measure Display

The Bosch GLM165-27CG has a remarkable degree of long-range accuracy and offers measurement increments of 1/32 of an inch. Even at its max measuring distance of 165 feet, your accuracy can be as good as 1/16 of an inch. That primarily depends on the material you’re bouncing the laser off of, but it’s darn good and matches up with some of Bosch’s top laser measures.

Bosch includes an inclinometer in the design and it shows up while you’re taking measurements. When you need accuracy beyond simple estimates, it helps ensure you’re measuring as straight horizontal or vertical as possible.

A Note About Stakeout Accuracy: Units with date codes from 3/21 and earlier have a 1/2-inch stakeout accuracy deviation instead of 1/16-inch. That has been corrected in model manufactured from 4/21 on.

Green Laser

Green Laser Beam

Bosch equipped this model with a vibrant green-beam Class II laser and it’s all about visibility. The major benefit is that it’s 4x brighter to your eyes than standard red beams and produces a highly visible dot on most surfaces.

Bluetooth Connectivity

This compact laser measure has integrated Bluetooth Smart 4.2 technology that can automatically transfer measurements to your smartphone or tablet using the free Bosch MeasureOn app. If you’re the type of Pro that wants to integrate more technology into your data collection, reports, and estimates, it’s an easy way to put those measurements to digital paper.

Expanded Measurement Set

The Bosch Blaze Laser Measure has a slew of features along with what you have come to expect. It obviously takes standard measurements, including real-time distance, but it also takes adds and subtracts measurements, calculates area and volume, and takes indirect measurements using its 360° inclinometer.

Standard and real-time measurements are displayed in traditional fractions for folks who prefer tape measure style readings.

A non-standard feature that’s worth noting is a built-in level function. By setting the laser measure on any of its sides, it displays an angle in degrees. Set it with the display facing up and you get a bullseye-style level.

Bosch GLM165-27CG Laser Measure

Switching between modes is simple and they’re easy to read on the backlit color LCD screen. With the power on, simply press the function button in the center, then hit the left or right buttons until you get to the mode you want.

Haptic Feedback

One great feature we certainly didn’t have back at the beginning of our laser measure use is haptic feedback. As you make each part of your measurement, the unit vibrates to confirm it has recorded it.

Bosch GLM165-27CG Laser Measure Design

Size and Weight

Bosch GLM165-27CG Laser Measure

As with most laser measures, this model has a light weight and compact profile, though it’s a little bulkier than more basic options. From end to end it measures just over 4.5 inches and weighs just 6.37 ounces. It’s easy to carry in a toolbox and there’s a metal clip to keep it close at hand on your belt.

Dual Power Options

Bosch GLM165-27CG Laser Measure

The Bosch Blaze Laser Measures can run off of either standard AAs or the rechargeable Bosch GLM-BAT lithium-ion battery pack. Having two available power sources is very convenient but keep in mind that the rechargeable battery is sold separately from the GLM165-27GC.

The lithium-ion battery option not only increases the runtime of the laser measure but also gives you better performance in colder weather over AA batteries. Plus, you can charge and operate the laser measure at the same time.

If your work calls for a lot of measuring, do yourself a favor and go with the lithium-ion pack and just keep a set of AA’s on hand as a backup. With the green laser and Bluetooth functions, this model uses energy more quickly than some of the basic lasers you may be used to.

One minor negative if you’re using the belt clip is that you have to remove it to access the battery. If you’re using the lithium-ion pack, the charging port sits just out of the way, so you don’t have to take the clip off with the rechargeable pack.

Improved Durability

Bosch GLM165-27CG Laser Measure

Compared to past models, this laser measure generation broke the mold concerning durability. The updated models in the lineup feature a full rubber overmold housing to better withstand drops from ladders, counters… you name it. Additionally, these laser measures now also come with an IP65 rating against water and dust ingress, further extending their useful life.

Additional Features

  • Battery save mode
  • Onboard data storage retains measurements during intermittent work
  • Rounding to 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2-inch increments
  • Selectable and standard and metric units
  • Nylon carrying pouch and wrist strap included

Bosch GLM165-27 Series Comparison

There are actually three members of the GLM165-27 series and they share most of the same functions. Here’s a quick look at how they compare to one another.

Basically, you’re choosing between red and green beams, and at the highest price the green laser gets includes the lithium-ion battery pack. The other functions and features are exactly the same.

Bosch GLM165-27CG Laser Measure Price

With a pair of AA batteries in the package, this laser measure runs $169. We recommend going ahead and stepping up to the GLM165-27CGL package that includes the lithium-ion battery pack for $199.

If you prefer the red laser instead, it’s $149.

No matter which way you go, Bosch warranties its lasers for 2 years if you register after your purchase.

The Bottom Line

If you’re looking for a combination of accuracy and simplicity in a 165-foot laser, Bosch has other options you should consider. The Bosch GLM165-27CG is a full-featured, connected laser for Pros who want more versatility from their laser

The post Best Bubble Level Buying Guide for Pros 2022 appeared first on Pro Tool Reviews.

]]>

Finding the best bubble level doesn’t have to be an exercise in frustration in spite of the vast number of options out there. In general, there are plenty of reputable choices. Sometimes, you just need to know what other Pros are using to validate your thoughts. Known also as a spirit level, here are some of the most popular models along with some things to look out for.

Best Bubble Level Features to Look For

  • Accuracy – a bubble level is only as good as its ability to give you a truly level measurement. We prefer to use levels with 0.0005″/1″ accuracy or better. On a 48″ level, that gives us a maximum error of +/- 0.024″, or 3/125″. However, less expensive and smaller levels like torpedo and pocket models often fall short of that mark.
  • Visibility – the most accurate bubble level in the world doesn’t mean diddly if you can’t see the bubble. Different colors and high contrast help a lot.
  • Durability – bubble levels do most of their work on jobsites where the environment isn’t as forgiving as the living room where you’re trying to hang a picture. You’ll want to avoid plastic.
Comparing Empire True Blue Vial

Optional Features

  • Magnetic – magnets are great for acting as a third hand when you’re working around steel.
  • LED lights – battery-powered lights really help the visibility of a spirit level when you’re working in low light or varying light conditions.
  • Digital levels – some Pros enjoy the convenience of a digital readout rather than just a vial, especially when you’re working toward specific grades like on wheelchair ramps.

Best Bubble Levels for Professional Users

We cover all sorts of levels, looking at each type and application for the best performers. Some recommendations attach to quality while others have to do with particular features.

Best Premium Box Level

Milwaukee Redstick MLBX48 – $95

There are only a few players in the premium level class and our favorite is the Milwaukee Redstick level. Their Sharpsite vials give the level excellent visibility compared to standard vials. But it’s what you can’t see that sets it apart – an all-metal backbone. The backbone has multiple ridges moving along the interior of the box which gives it outstanding durability compared to other box levels.

Milwaukee Redstick Level

There’s no compromise in accuracy with an Excellent 0.0005″ rating. Like its competitors in the class, the additional innovations also drive up the price. Fortunately, you can grab a case to protect your favorite bubble level. There are also multiple level sets in the Redstick line to help save some money if you need more than one size.

Best Bubble Level Set

Stabila Type 80 AS-2 Levels Set – $130

The Stabila Type 80 AS-2 bubble level set includes a 12″, 24″, and 48″ spirit level. We love this kit because it provides three boxed aluminum levels that resist slipping. Stabila has excellent accuracy—±1/32″ out to 72-inches in normal position.

Stabila Type 80 AS-2 Levels Set

We like the integrated wall grips and have always loved Stabila acrylic vials with fluorescent fluid for easy readability. Rubber end caps, an electrostatic powder coating, and an included special-edition zippered case round out the reasons why we think any Pro would love this kit. We almost forgot to mention it only costs $130!

Best Box Level

Empire Level E105.48H – $50

Empire LED lighted vial

If you’re willing to give a little on visibility and strength, a standard box level is where you turn. For a 48″ model, you’re looking right around $50. In this class, we turn to Empire Level and their True Blue vials. The blue coloration gives you a bit better visibility than standard yellow vials and their levels are pretty tough. Bump up in price point another $10, and you’ll get even better visibility with Empire’s UltraView LED lights on your level. For the 48″ class, we recommend going with the EM105.48 to get you excellent accuracy and durability with outstanding visibility.

Best Bubble Level Buying Guide for Pros

Best I-Beam Level

KaPro 13-62-24 Project I-Beam Level – $10.99

I-beam levels don’t have the same durability as a box level or billet aluminum bubble level. Still, they’re less expensive and weigh less. Case in point: The KaPro 13-62-24 Project I-Beam level. This 24-inch level cost just $11 and you get the same excellent visibility and accuracy as most box levels.

KaPro 13-62-24 Project I-Beam Level

You can pay more and get better durability…but why? KaPro makes much more expensive levels—including digital models. For a great I-beam for rough leveling on the jobsite, you really can’t beat this tool.

Best Budget Level

Stanley 42-480 I-Beam Level – $15.99

For the budget-minded Pro, you might have to give up a little accuracy to save money on a bubble level. That’s the case with the Stanley 42-480 I-Beam level. You get Good durability with lightweight aluminum construction and protective end caps. The traditional three vial system gives you Good accuracy at 0.0015″ and visibility is Good as well. There’s also a groove for working on pipes.

Best Bubble Level Buying Guide for Pros

What sets this level apart for us is that it’s only $15.99 – pretty much a steal for a Pro 48-inch I-beam level.

Best Torpedo Level

Klein Lighted Billet Torpedo Level – $39.97

You typically store torpedo levels in one of two places during the workday: your tool pouch or your pocket. We love that the Klein 935RBLT torpedo level has an angled nose to help it slide into both more easily. Aside from that, Klein gives you level, plumb, and 45° vials with LED lights for low light situations. You can easily see the bubbles in these level vials at night. And since this is a go-to tool for plumbers and electricians, those low-light jobs are more frequent than many other trades.

Klein Tools Spirit torpedo level

There’s also a V-groove cut into the top to ensure you can work with pipe easily and magnets for work around steel. The Klein Lighted Torpedo Billet Level gives you Excellent durability, Outstanding visibility, and Very Good accuracy.

Also Consider: Empire Level EM71.8 Magnetic Billet Level

If you want another excellent option, go for the Empire Level EM71.8 magnetic billet torpedo level. You get graduated markings for slopes of 0.125-inch, 0.25-inch, 0.375-inch, or 0.5-inch per foot. The build quality is superb and we love the readability of the True Blue vials. You can pick up this bubble level for around $19.89.

Best Pocket Level

Milwaukee 4-inch Pocket Level (48-22-5102) – $19.99

Pocket levels are great for quick checks or work in really tight spaces, but the single vial system has some significant limitations. The Milwaukee pocket level handles that with a rotating, lockable vial. You can dial in a specific angle working in 2° increments or find the common angles of 15°, 22.5°, 45°. and 75° on the opposite side of the dial.

Best Bubble Level Buying Guide for Pros

You get excellent durability, very good visibility, and good accuracy in this small package. For less than $20 you really can’t go wrong.

Also Consider: Kapro 246M Handy Level

If you can forgo the rotating dial, we also like the compelling Kapro 246M Handy magnetic level. It features a compact aluminum frame with shock-absorbing end caps. Pick up this tiny level for around $11.99.

Best Basic Mason’s Level

Kapro 930 Smartcast – $42.90

Mason’s levels have to be tougher than most. It’s not just the concrete, it’s the way masons tap them to level brick and block during construction. For a basic mason’s level that’s flat-out tough, check out the Kapro 930 SmartCast. It’s a cast aluminum non-standard I-beam style that gives you gradient measurements up to 2° and has rubber strike pads on each end. Excellent visibility, durability, and accuracy give masons confidence in their work.

Best Bubble Level Buying Guide for Pros

Pick up this level in 16, 24, or 36-inch lengths. Pricing falls between $42 and $47.

Best Adjustable Expandable Level

Milwaukee RedStick Expandable Level – $209

Some jobs require flexibility—like placing tubs or windows. We love the flexibility and features of the Milwaukee RedStick Expandable Level. It provides rock-solid accuracy and stable measuring and marking. We also love the magnetic model for steel studs.

RedStick Expanding Level opened

Grab the size you need and you can leave several other levels behind. The 48-78″ version of this costs $209. It’s worth every penny.

Best Concrete Screeding Level

Milwaukee MLCON48 Concrete Screed Level – $99.97

Some mason’s levels move beyond simply checking for level construction and taking some trowel tapping abuse. Milwaukee’s Redstick concrete level lets you take care of screeding and smoothing duties. The square edge on the base acts as your screed while the round edge lets you smooth concrete.

Milwaukee RedStick Screed

Milwaukee also designed this level with materials that clean off easily at the end of the day…or even the next day. Sharpsite vials give you excellent visibility to see level, 1/8″, or 1/4″ grades. Less than $100 gets you tons of durability and accuracy at 0.0005″.

Best Digital Level

Empire Level E105.48H – $129

Empire Level Digital Box Level: 48-Inch e105.48

If you’re one of the Pros looking to make the jump to digital levels, you’ll love the Empire Level E105.48 (or Empire EM105.48 if you want the magnetic version). Moving from $60 standard box levels to the $170 price point is what it will take. You maintain Empire’s Excellent accuracy with a digital readout. The best part is that it’s an auto-calibrating system – just turn it on and get to work.

Dual digital displays are backlit to all but negate the need for checking bubbles. However, batteries die and you can rely on Empire’s Excellent visibility with standard level and plumb vials if you need to. Wrapped in an IP65-rated housing with Excellent durability, this is our favorite digital level to turn to.

Empire 48-Inch e105.48

Also Consider: Johnson 1760-4800 Digital Level

If you’re in the market for a digital level, we liked the 48-inch 5700-4800D Johnson digital level. The 1760-4800 is the updated version. This tough and accurate tool has hi-tech features that function as an apprentice. Our reviewer used it to rebuild the roof of a carport, set a new door in an old house, and much more. Pick it up for $184.

Why a Bubble Level?

Bubble levels have been around for a long time. Even though cross line lasers are a sexier option, the bubble level still trumps them in several areas. Lasers lose visibility as soon as you step into the light, limiting their usefulness outside. And while a laser is more accurate, it’s better for longer distances than what you’ll use a spirit level for. There’s also the convenience factor – you usually go for your spirit level when you’re making frequent checks for level and plumb work. Cross line lasers take more time to set up.

What Are the Criteria?

There is a wide range of classes for levels out there. Admittedly, we didn’t cover every single option (post levels, for example). To make our list, each level had to hit our base accuracy standard of 0.005″/1″ (1/2000″), have high visibility, and durable metal construction.

Rating Key

  • Outstanding – best in this class
  • Excellent – not the top, but close
  • Very Good – solid, nothing to be ashamed of here
  • Good – It’ll work, but we wouldn’t want to go any lower

See Some Brands that are Missing?

We reached out to more manufacturers than are represented here, but some declined to participate even though they make excellent bubble levels.

Disagree With Our Choices?

That’s okay! We know personal preferences take a front seat in determining the best spirit level for you, and every Pro is different. Do Pro Tool Nation a favor and tell us what your top pick is and why you love it. Feel free to put it in the comments below or on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!

Tape measures are a staple in everyone’s toolbox from the most seasoned Pro to the greenest DIYer. Ranging in length and price, most cost less than $30. But are all tape measures created equally? Of course not. We’re breaking things down into the categories our Pro team says are most important when they’re looking for the best tape measure.

Editor’s Note: Think you know everything about tapes? Check out our article on how to read a tape measure and we promise you’ll learn something new!

Best Tape Measure Overall

Crescent Lufkin Shockforce Nite Eye G2

Best Tape Measure | Crescent Lufkin Shockforce Nite Eye

When we went looking for the best tape measure, we wanted it all: durability, standout, accuracy, visibility, hook grip, ergonomics, and features. While there are several great options, it’s the Crescent Lufkin Shockforce G2 Nighteye that stands out above the rest for us. It’s not the best in every single category, but it does everything well and it has a fantastic blade color for those of us with less-than-ideal vision.

25-Foot Price: $27.98 (L1225B-02)

Best Heavy-Duty Tape Measure

DeWalt Tough Series Tape Measures

Best Heavy-Duty Tape Measure | DeWalt Tough Series

There have been some outstanding heavy-duty tape measures to hit the market in the past several years. Milwaukee’s Stud, DeWalt’s XP followed by its Tough Series, Crescent Lufkin’s Shockforce, and others have been pushing the durability expectations to new levels. So which one is the best?

In our opinion, it’s the DeWalt Tough Series tape measures. Solid housing construction combined with a generous layer of overmold to protect it stands up to just about anything we’ve been able to throw at it, including chucking as high as we could and letting it fall to the asphalt. With nothing more than a scratch for our efforts, it’s one tough measure.

25-Foot Price: $28.97 (DWHT36925S)

Best Magnetic Tape Measure

Milwaukee Stud Magnetic Tape Measures

Milwaukee Stud tape measure Gen 2

Crescent’s Shockforce and DeWalt Tough Series both have magnetic options we heartily recommend. However, the one we pick up most often in our shop is Milwaukee’s second-generation Stud. It starts with a durable Exo360 nylon blade coating that resists cracking well and houses it in a durable frame. The magnetic hook grips steel surfaces solidly and our team loves the finger stop brake feature both extending and controlling the recoil on the way back in.

25-Foot Price: $30.97 (48-22-9725M)

Best Laser Tape Measure

Skil 65-Foot Laser Measurer with Wheel

Skil Laser Distance Measure

There are plenty of great laser distance measures to choose from, but not all of them have a tape measure function. If you want to measure traditionally without having an object to bounce the laser off of, you need a wheel to roll across the surface instead. For that feature, look to Skil’s laser distance measure.

When you need more than just the tape measure function, you can measure in real-time out to 65 feet or calculate area for quick estimates. You get it all with an accuracy of ±1/8-inch.

For a deeper dive into laser distance measures, check out our recommendations here.

Price: $49.99 (ME9821-00)

Best Tape Measure Value

Stanley FatMax Tape Measures

Best Tape Measure Value | Stanley FatMax

Value is more than just price. It’s what you get for your money and that takes into consideration the whole package: function, durability, readability, standout, and more. Over and over again, we hear from Pros in the field and from our readers that Stanley FatMax is the only tape measure they’ll use. Why? Because it’s accurate, reliable, and affordable.

The classic 25-foot tape measure is still under $20, it’s Made in the USA using global materials, and we believe it’s the best bang for your buck.

25-Foot Price: $16.99 (33-725)

Best Tape Measure From More Brands We Trust

Best HART Tape Measure

HART has an impressive depth to its line of tape measures that includes keychain, standard, and chrome models. Our top choice is the Pro Grade model and it’s available in 16 to 30-foot lengths, though only the 25-foot is available in both magnetic and non-magnetic.

Sporting 11 feet of standout, easy-to-read fraction markings (single-side printing), and greater overmold protection than many tapes we’ve used, it’s also easy on your wallet in the sub-$15 class.

25-Foot Price: $14.35 (HHTMPN25)

Best Klein Tape Measure

Whether you’re an electrician or not, Klein makes some durable tape measures and its magnetic models hold stronger than most. Seriously, we’ve used a Klein tape measure as a magnetic grabber for dropped fasteners and small hand tools in the past. They have just one non-magnetic model (25-foot) while covering 16, 25, and 30-foot lengths along with a 7.5-meter model on the metric side for magnetic options.

Standout is excellent at 13 feet, the magnetic models feature a double hook that offers better top grabbing, and the nylon-coated blade has printing on both sides. Thanks to Klein’s focus on electricians, they also have a conduit bending table and a 3-phase layout guide on the backside of the blade.

25-Foot Price (Magnetic): $26.97 (9225R)

Best Komelon Tape Measure

Komelon tape measures are popular thanks to a price that’s very easy on your wallet. They’re great for around the house and people that tend to lose them often. They also have a Contractor series that’s more appropriate for typical jobsite use and that’s the line we recommend.

It covers 16, 25, and 40-foot lengths, and only the 25-foot is available with a magnetic hook. They have a nylon-coated blade that’s 20% thicker and a stainless steel spring to help them last longer than Komelon’s less expensive tapes.

25-Foot Price: $18.99 (M25LR)

Best Ox Tools Tape Measure

Ox Tools isn’t crazy-deep in the measuring tools category just yet, but we liked what we saw from its Pro Tuff tape measure. Its 13 feet of standout is solid and it felt better in our hands than the bulkier version from a few years back. What really opened our eyes is the improvement in durability for both the housing and the nylon-coated blade.

25-Foot Price: $19.98

Best Ryobi Tape Measure

Ryobi doesn’t do a whole lot in the hand tool department, but they do have a highly affordable 25-foot tape measure. Almost completely surrounded by overmold, it’s a compact model with a smaller blade and a somewhat tame 7-foot standout. Still, for less than $8, you can afford to buy several so there’s one everywhere you might need it.

Price: $7.98 (RTM25)

Best Stabila Tape Measure

Stabila is known for the quality of its levels and that might make its tape measures fly under the radar a bit. Between the BM 100 and the BM 300 lines, we prefer the more durable 300 series. Its strong housing benefits from plenty of overmold. The blade is nylon-coated with printing on both sides and capable of a 10-foot standout. Stabila also adds a unique hook grip on the lower side to help keep it from slipping. It’s available in 16 or 26-foot lengths.

26-Foot Price: $25.00 (30526)

Best Tape Measure Buying Guide

Accuracy

Before you worry about anything else, a tape measure has to be accurate. If it isn’t, nothing else matters. Nearly every name-brand tape measure is solid in this department. The ones that aren’t accurate usually have a bent hook that you can fix on a Lixer tape measure calibrating tool.

Best Tape Measure Shootout

Durability

Once you know your tape is accurate, durability is the next major concern. Most tape measures are capable of surviving dozens, if not hundreds, of drops onto concrete from workbench height. Drops from greater heights are where we begin to see the difference.

To get the best durability, look for a tape measure with at least four connection points on the housing and plenty of overmold to protect it. Also keep an eye open for at least three rivets holding the hook on, nylon coating over the entire blade, and additional coating over the first foot or so.

Best Tape Measure Shootout

Length

The best tape measure length is completely dependent on your needs, but we find a 25-foot tape is the best all-around. If you’re looking for something more compact, go with a 16-foot. Go with a 35-foot if you’re consistently measuring more than 25 feet at a time.

Clip Design

Having a good clip can make or break your tape measure experience. After all, when they’re not in our toolboxes or on a workbench, we usually clip tape measures to our belts. The strength of the clip is part of the equation, a design that slides on and off your belt without too much difficulty is the other.

You can test the clip strength in the store by simply pulling on it while it’s in the package. The ease of sliding on and off is a little trickier, but we find that clips with a flare out at the bottom tend to work the best.

Best Tape Measure Shootout

Visibility

If it’s accurate and it’s tough, you just need to be able to read the markings. In searching for the best tape measure, there are some interesting ways to improve visibility. You can go with bolder markings, reverse contrast, or even buck the trend of traditional black and yellow colors. Everyone’s eyes are different, and fortunately, you can easily see the difference for yourself in the store.

Best Tape Measure Shootout

Standout and Throw

Manufacturers love to tout the standout of their tape measures and there are plenty of jobsite jokes that go along with it. For our team, standout is important – up until 9′ or so. As long as the standout gets you beyond the length of sheet material, we’re pretty happy. You can definitely make the argument for 10′ – 16′ lumber that you might work with, but you’re sliding the hook over those longer pieces most of the time.

Best Tape Measure Shootout

Closely related, but rarely discussed is tape measure throw. Since the goal is to not have to walk from one end of the material to the other, the farther you can throw the tape’s blade, the better. Many Pros throw it out there, then continue extending the blade across the top of the material until it reaches the end. The downside of throwing the blade is that you often give up standout length because of the action.

Best Tape Measure Shootout

Ease it out for better standout or throw it out for quicker work? It’s your call. The best tape measure will have a balance of the standout and throw and our Pros like 8 feet as a minimum standard for both. The more the better, though.

Hook Design

A tape measure absolutely has to hook easily on the top and bottom. The best tape measure will give you solid hooking on the sides and even naturally turn so the edge of the blade is flush on your material. For the most part, the larger the hook the better, but you can overdo it. Too much mass will make the hook flip when you’re trying to grab on the side.

Best Tape Measure Shootout

Ergonomics

Ergonomics on tape measures are less about the weight and more about how naturally they fit in your hand. Since everyone’s hand is different, there are a lot of different opinions about which size feels the best.

Best Tape Measure Shootout

Price and Value

It wasn’t all that long ago that paying more than $20 for a tape measure was a lot. Now, premium tapes can cost $30 or more. You certainly get better durability and features at those higher price points, but it’s up to you to decide what’s worth it.

Best Tape Measure Shootout

Bonus Features

Magnetic Hook

A magnetic hook helps when you’re doing layout or measurement around steel. But there are also times when you might not want it.

Nylon Blade Coating

Nylon coating on the blade helps reduce the amount of wear that eventually starts rusting and peeling away.

Finger Brake

Some of the springs in these tape measures will give your finger a pretty good pinch if you’re not careful.

Dual Side Blade Printing

Printing on both sides of the tape is helpful as you’re working around different scenarios.

Best Tape Measure Shootout

Auto Lock

Love it or hate it, auto lock mechanisms stop the tape as you extend it rather than forcing you to use the thumb lock.

Bonus Markings and Scales

Some of these tapes give you a little more bang for your buck with additional scales for certain applications.
