Thermal cameras can be a lot of fun to play with, but for some of us, they’re valuable pieces of diagnostic equipment that make our jobs easier. We got our hands on the AGM Glory G1S Thermal Camera Smartphone to see what kind of potential it has for professional contractors and tradesmen.

AGM Glory G1S Thermal Camera Smartphone Powerplant

AGM starts with a Snapdragon 480 processor that boasts 5G 8nm Octa-core 2.0 GHz performance (whew, that’s a mouthful!). Backing that up is 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of onboard storage. You can extend the storage with a micro SD card up to 512 GB. It’s also sporting a Qualcomm Adreno 619 GPU to boost the graphics performance.

As far as cards go, you can choose between using two nano SIM cards or one nano SIM and a micro SD card. If you’re going to expand the storage (which we highly recommend), you only have one SIM card slot available, but that’s not a big deal for most people.

The phone comes pre-loaded with Android 11, so that’s a little behind considering Android 12 launched in October of 2021.

Keeping you in the game is a 5500 mAh battery.

All of that matches up solidly with mid-range phones. Of course, in 2022, mid-range is still so much further ahead than the mid-range phones of just a few years ago that it feels like the term undersells its capabilities.

Rugged Smartphone Build

Like other jobsite-ready smartphones, the G1S is a beefy phone and weighs 11.2 ounces. It boasts IP68/IP69K and MIL-STD-810H ratings. It doesn’t need a separate case and it comes with a pre-installed screen cover.

By the time it’s all said and done, it’s drop-tested to 1.5 meters and can survive 1.5 meters underwater for up to 30 minutes. So yeah, feel free to shoot some underwater photo/video on your next vacation.

Video

The screen is 6.53 inches diagonal and with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels, there are enough pixels to see some very fine details. The color accuracy is excellent as well, making this a very pleasant phone to catch the latest Pro Tool Reviews videos on YouTube.

Unsurprisingly, the speakers have plenty of room for improvement. Especially at the highest volumes, it’s pretty muddy. That’s not unusual for a phone, particularly a rugged smartphone. A good set of headphones or earbuds is a must to get the audio quality that better matches the video playback.

Traditional Cameras

Without a doubt, the camera array is the main selling point of the AGM Glory G1S Thermal Camera Smartphone. There are a total of FIVE cameras onboard.

It starts with the main camera—an impressive 48 MP auto-focusing Sony AMX582 with a top f-stop of f/1.79. It’s capable of taking some impressive photos, but its color temperature isn’t always accurate. Fortunately, onboard photo editing can make the adjustment very easily.

Then there’s the selfie camera. Leaving behind the days of 2 MP and 5 MP front-facing cameras, this one is 16 MP and presents a nice, clean image.

There’s also a macro camera. While this one is only 2 MP, you can get incredibly close to your subject and an optimal range of just 3 cm.

Thermal Camera

AGM’s thermal camera has some excellent features to help you capture photos and videos. First of all, it has a 256 x 192 resolution that’s tough to beat with other smartphones and add-on accessories. There are a lot of options that could become an entire standalone review on its own. From color palettes to different modes and parameters, it has more versatility than we expect from a smartphone thermal camera.

Several things stand out, though. We love the measurement overlay. It marks the centers of the image and automatically tracks the highest and lowest temps on the screen. For MRO and diagnostic purposes, it makes the job that much easier.

The fusion mode is interesting. It takes the visual image and overlays it with the thermal image. It’s not as effective as FLIR’s MSX technology because it doesn’t highlight object edges, but it can still be helpful when you need to see more object detail.

We also like that you have two temperature ranges to offer better temperature accuracy. By default, it’s set to -4° to 302° F and there’s also a range of 212° – 1022° F for higher temperature ranges.

Infrared Camera

Finally, there’s a 20 MP Sony IMX 350 infrared camera, allowing you to take true night images and see what’s there when there isn’t enough light for a standard camera. It shows up like a black and white image, but it doesn’t need any ambient light. It uses an infrared LED on the phone to give the sensor what it needs. That limits its effective range compared to a night-visions system that costs thousands of dollars, but it’s great for inspection in dark areas.

Laser Pointer

Does a phone really need a laser pointer? Probably not, and there are plenty of people who don’t need access to one. However, when you’re using the AGM Glory G1S Thermal Camera Smartphone in the trades, it’s helpful. You’re going to carry your phone anyway, so it eliminates having to carry a separate one or shop for other test and measurement devices that integrate one.

Available Charging Dock

You can charge the AGM Glory G1S Thermal Camera Smartphone with a standard USB-C plug or you can get your hands on the charging dock. It’s as convenient as a wireless charging pad with the advantage that the phone stands up vertically so you can keep reading or watching easily.

Speaking of wireless charging, note the G1S is not compatible with wireless charging systems.

The charging rate on the dock is slower (10W compared to 18W plugged in). Even so, it’s incredibly convenient on your desk and for just $20 more, we recommend grabbing it.

The Bottom Line

Not everyone needs thermal and infrared imaging, but they’re incredibly useful in a variety of trades and other jobs. What sets the AGM Glory G1S apart from other thermal imaging smartphones is its image quality. Its higher resolution and infrared camera to go along with a durable build make it a very compelling option.

The DeWalt DW0330S Tool Connect 330 ft. Laser Distance Measurer lets you take and store measurements. You can also mark up photos using the Tool Connect app as well as create and export projects.

Powered by a single AAA battery, the DeWalt DW0330S Laser Distance Measure features a large backlit color LCD screen. While maintaining a high contrast design, the LCD features helpful color icons to let you know the current mode and measurement settings.

Distances can be displayed in feet, inches, and meters. It also lets you calculate area, volume, and more. Combined with the app, you get a lot of functionality for estimating, remodeling, and trade work.

Final Thoughts

Laser Distance Measurers are great tools for any professional who is estimating distances or working out how much material they might need. They’re quick and relatively easy to use, the range of distance exceeds the capability of the tape measure, and you don’t need a second person to help grab a measurement.  When you can get the accuracy to within the +/- 1/16″ range, the LDM is a great tool for most measurements.

The problem with laser distance measurers—even ones from DeWalt—is that they can be thrown off by the color or material of the surface. They also need an actual surface to bounce a laser off of.  It also can’t grab hold of the end of a board, so “pull” measurements won’t work. Professionals use these tools for their primary strength: estimating. If you need to measure actual material, you likely still need a standard tape measure when accuracy is critical.

All that said, the DeWalt Laser Distance Measure seems helpful for many applications, especially the 100-foot model.  Bluetooth connectivity and online measurement storage seem like a great way to stay organized, and the Tool Connect App has some other neat features, such as battery readings and tool location.

These LDMs are priced pretty well for what they do. In the case of the 100-foot model, you might get better range for the $100 price point, but you don’t see a whole lot of other LDMs with Bluetooth connectivity at that price. For the 40-foot model, the short range and +/- 1/4″ accuracy probably limit it to DIY applications, though for under $30, the professional might find it useful in some capacity.

You probably know a guy that tests the limits of well-worn jokes by holding a stud finder to himself and saying, “beep!” Maybe you are that guy…or maybe I am that guy. The Ryobi Whole Stud Detector won’t cut down on the bad (Dad) jokes, but it could help you quickly locate studs behind drywall. Having used the Franklin Prosenser T6 and other similar products, we wanted to see how the Ryobi ESF5002 stud finder stacked up against the best stud finders.

Ryobi Whole Stud Detector First Impressions

The Ryobi Whole Stud Detector (or Ryobi Stud Finder as I’m sure some will call it) uses 7 green LED lights to indicate the entire width of a 2×4 stud. We find this much more accurate than stud finders offering a single LED. Those tools leave a lot of ambiguity regarding exactly where the stud begins and ends. When you want to drill and drive a 1/4-inch fastener to hold up a TV mount or wood storage rack, you don’t want to end up right on the edge of a 2×4.

Ryobi replaced their former wide-oriented stud finder with this new detector. Just as light, it now ergonomically fits your hand with an upright orientation. Where the last stud finder felt like a two-handed tool—the Ryobi ESF5002 definitely works one-handed.

Using the Ryobi Stud Finder

The side-mounted button both calibrates and activates the stud finder. Place the stud finder on the wall, press the button, and slide it left to right to find the nearest stud underneath drywall. The green LEDs both direct you to, and confirm, the center of a stud.

With this model, Ryobi did something really cool. While the top-mounted green LEDs direct you left or right to the stud, a center button lights up when you find the exact center. With this feature, you never have to worry about sliding too far to the left or right. The Ryobi whole stud sector removes all of the guesswork from the process.

Reviewer’s Note: Because these stud finders use capacitance, you want to keep your hands off the wall while detecting. Also try and keep your hand low on the tool to avoid interfering with the sensor.

Ryobi ESF5001 vs ESF5002 Stud Finders

The Ryobi ESF5002 whole stud detector marks the company’s second smart tool in this area. The first one, a horizontal model really took two hands to operate. It also included AC detection. While the new model lacks AC detection, the ergonomic improvements make it a better tool. We also have very little success with AC detection as false positives make the feature less than useful (or consistent).

Marking the Stud Once You Find It

We needed to hang our new Youtube award—given to use for passing 100,000 subscribers on the Pro Tool Reviews Youtube Channel. It was the perfect opportunity to test the Ryobi Whole Stud Detector. We could also easily gauge the accuracy of the tool since we had a pretty good knowledge of the exact stud locations (having recently drywalled the entire shop).

Once you roll the Ryobi whole stud finder across the wall you quickly begin to see the LEDs direct you to continue or retreat in a direction. It navigates you until the center LEDs light up and the side arrows do not. At that point, a ring of light around the center marking button lights up as well.

At this point, you simply press that button. This pushes a sharp plastic tip into the drywall, making a mark so that you can know where to drill and/or drive your fastener.

Accuracy Concerns

This Ryobi stud detector, along with just about any electronic stud finder, measures capacitance. Since it uses this method, it can have difficulty getting accurate results with wallpaper that has metal foil or fibers in it. Plaster backed with metal mesh also presents a problem.

You should also note that Ryobi only mentions the detector’s ability to find studs behind drywall. While they don’t specifically rule out other materials, it’s clearly been designed with drywall in mind.

The Bottom Line

The Ryobi Whole Stud Detector (or Ryobi Whole Stud Finder, if you prefer) has the helpful design of seven green LEDs that indicate both boundaries as well as the center of the stud. Many stud finders simply offer an audible alert or an ambiguous stud area. There’s no guesswork with this detector. It shows you both the left and right edges and lights up clearly upon locating the exact center of the stud.

It’s easy to mark the center of the stud on the wall by pressing the center button. The Ryobi ESF5002 stud finder works simply and quickly to locate studs behind drywall. Felt pads help it slide easily across the wall, though it gets bumpy on some rougher textures. It’s also light, compact, and runs on two AAA batteries. At $30, we think you get a truly accurate and reliable stud detector.

At around $39.99, you might find a cheaper laser distance measure, but this is our pick for the best laser distance measurer for DIYers and home use. It helps you estimate carpet and tile, or measure a wall for paint without breaking the bank.

Best Laser Distance Measurer for the Money

Skil ME9821-00 Laser Distance Measure

The Skil ME9821-00 65-foot laser distance measure really impressed us with its array of features. It brings a no-nonsense measuring solution to DIYers and even entry-level professionals. Between the price, ease of use, and accuracy, the Skil ME9821-00 stands out. It’s a compelling choice in a sea of “me-too” products.

We also can’t fail to mention the simplicity and innovation of the wheel measure. For curved surface measurements, the Skil Laser Distance Measure features a wheel measuring mode. You can drag the wheel on the bottom of the unit forward or back across your surface to get an accurate measurement. If you change directions while dragging, it just subtracts the distance from the current measurement.

When it comes to Pro features, we look for a combination of accuracy, durability, and features. The Milwaukee 150-ft Laser Distance Measure has a nice combination of each. The laser is built around standard tool plastic and has a protective overmold on each of the four side edges. This should protect it in most drop situations.

For most interior work where a laser distance meter is a useful tool, the 150 ft Milwaukee Laser Distance Meter finds a nice middle ground between range, accuracy, and feature set while keeping the price around $105. The Side Shot button and corner measurement lever are nice additions over standard measures and Milwaukee keeps the interface from being overly complicated.

We find plenty of times where documentation is key. Pairing a phone with an LDM solves these problems. However, for longer-range applications, you often place the laser so far out that you can no longer easily track it. For that, you can make a case for integrating a zoom camera right into the tool. The Bosch Blaze GLM400CL does this with an adjustable zoom camera that helps you find the laser spot in bright conditions.

Measuring up to 400-feet, the Bosch Blaze lets you take and spot your measurement and then transfer the measurement documentation directly to a smartphone or tablet. It uses Bluetooth connectivity to its MeasureOn app. This outdoor laser measure hits all the basics and also adds a built-in inclinometer to help determine the angle of pitch. It even confirms when the tool is level for free-hand use.

Rounding everything out is a backlit color LCD display, reinforced screen glass, and the ability to see the last 50 measurements on the tool. It also stores up to 600 images. You can get more range from Leica, but at just $299, this nails our pick for the best laser distance meter for long-range use.

How Far Do Laser Distance Measures Measure?

The first question you need to ask is: How far do you typically need to measure? Do you work mostly indoors or outside (in the sunlight)? Do you mostly focus on residential projects or commercial ones?

Using Laser Measures Outdoors: Keep in mind that laser measures do work outdoors. Even though you may not be able to see the laser, it’s accurate if it falls within its range of use. Still, you do need to be certain you hit the right target! (See the “What is a Digital Viewfinder” section below)

If you’re working on residential jobs, 50 feet of range often covers your needs for indoor measurements. If you estimate fencing or other outdoor products, you may want to go with a tool capable of greater distances.

Commercial applications usually require larger distance measurements, so a longer range tool makes sense. The further a laser distance measure can measure, the more powerful the laser and sensor need to be.

Make the Call: Consider the longest measurements you need a laser distance measure for. Get a model that will extend a little beyond that.

How Much Memory or Storage Do I Need?

A basic laser distance measure doesn’t have any memory storage. The best it will give you is the ability to hold a measurement. Others might give you storage for up to 200 measurements or more. Decide how comfortable you are recording measurements in a notebook or on your phone. If you’re a good note-taker or don’t want to trust technology, memory might not be a big deal. On the other hand, storing those figures right in the tool makes for a potentially quicker workflow.

Make the Call: This is a judgment call. I like a laser measure with at least 50 data points of storage so I can have an entire house’s worth of measurements. I still record them in a notebook, though.

Best Kind of Screens for Laser Distance Measures

The two major screen types you’ll find are LCD and LED. LED is much brighter and easier to read. This really helps in bright sunlight. Many LCD displays have a backlight that helps in low light conditions, but can be tough to read in direct sun. “Inverted” colors also help as white text on a dark background is easier to read in the sun than black text on white.

Make the Call: Both screens work just fine, but we prefer LED and the option for inverted screens if we have a choice.

Are Color LCD Screens Necessary?

We keep seeing new-fangled products with full-color LCD displays. So far, this hasn’t proved terribly helpful. There are, however, some specific instances where a full-color screen may help. In particular, models with built-in cameras make for much more impressive estimating documentation at the end of the job. Still, other models serve as long-distance rangefinders, helping you find that dot that might be as far as several hundred yards away.

Can Laser Distance Measures Give You Real-Time Measurements?

Typically, yes. Real-time measurements give you instant feedback as you move the laser rather than waiting for you to press a “measure” button. It gives you the ability to find an exact distance away from a wall or ceiling so you can make a mark before punching a hole through it. None of our Pro team is interested in a laser distance meter that doesn’t have this feature.

Make the Call: In our opinion, the real-time measurement function is a must-have feature.

Does it Support Addition/Subtraction?

Addition and subtraction are handy features to have when you need to combine two lengths that you can’t measure in one shot. They also help when you need to exclude part of a measurement. It works in conjunction with distance, area, and volume as well. If you’re doing an estimate for painting, it’s an easy way to take out the area of garage doors and other large non-paintable areas as you go.

Make the Call: This is a function you’ll find on all but the most basic laser distance measures, and it’s pretty helpful on area calculations in particular.

Can It Calculate Area and Volume?

Chances are that if your laser measure has addition and subtraction, it will also have area, volume, and indirect measurement (see below). This simply allows you to take two (for area) or three (for volume) measurements and automatically get the result. When estimating for paint, drywall, flooring, airflow, and more, we consider this an essential function.

Make the Call: Aside from making a basic measurement, area and volume functions are among the most helpful. You probably want it on your laser distance meter.

Can You Take an Indirect Measurement (use the Pythagorean Theorem)?

Indirect measurement goes hand in hand with area and volume functions. The difference is that you measure straight to the base of the material (the leg of the right triangle) and from the same point to the top of the material (the hypotenuse) to get a height that you can’t measure directly.

Make the Call: This one’s not a make-or-break feature for most of our team, but you’ll probably get it along with area and volume. It’s actually a really cool feature if you find yourself needing it. An advancd version of this also integrates an angle measurement. This lets you measure various heights at a distance—even off the ground.

Is a Wireless Connection (Bluetooth) Helpful?

Getting data off the tool is almost as important as getting it in if you do estimates and bids. If you’re on the tech-savvy side of things, a Bluetooth connection can help you transfer data from your laser distance measure to your phone, tablet, or computer.

There’s likely an app to go along with it as well. Some apps even give you the ability to overlay measurements on pictures or drawings of the work. When putting together a bid or quote, this lets you show your client visuals and bring an extra layer of professionalism to your proposal.

Make the Call: There’s a learning curve that comes with adding this layer of technology. Those who learn to use it can save tons of time and produce much more data-rich proposals and estimates. While  Bluetooth is helpful in laser measures, it’s not an industry standard, so it’s completely up to your comfort level if you want it.

What is a Digital Viewfinder and How Does It Help?

A digital viewfinder is most helpful on a long-range laser distance measure where it’s difficult to see where the laser dot lands. When you’re measuring distances closing in on 400 feet, being off by a couple of degrees can make a big difference in your results.

Make the call: You can only see red lasers out to so far before you need to bounce it off a target card and possibly have a second person helping. The digital viewfinder is really helpful for longer range outdoor applications.

Should I Get a Model with a Camera?

Some laser distance measures add a camera to their digital viewfinder. This can make it easier to generate a photo with measurement layovers. This works alongside a Bluetooth connection to transfer the results into an app. This feature appears on high-end laser measures and comes at a premium price.

Other systems featuring camera integration function as rangefinders. These help you “zoom in” on far away objects you’re trying to hit with that little red dot.

Your Choice: This is most helpful on commercial sites where there’s a lot of technology in place to get information where it needs to go quickly. However, using technology like this as a residential contractor will definitely set you apart.

Lithium-ion Rechargeable or Battery as a Power Source?

Many laser distance meters use AAA or AA batteries as a power source, though some have an integrated lithium-ion battery. Standard alkaline batteries are relatively inexpensive and easy to find. Rechargeable batteries make sense for some of the larger, more powerful models and keep you from having to carry around spares…as long as you remember to charge it!

Make the Call: There’s not really a bad call here. Alkaline batteries will keep your initial cost down and lithium-ion is more convenient. I like lithium-ion, but the majority of our laser distance meters are alkaline.

How Much Should I Pay? What’s a Good Price?

How much you’re willing to spend is another first thing to consider. Laser measures can cost as little as $20. Commercial units might run more than $1,000. The latter will deliver longer ranges. They might also connect to a laptop and provide the ability to estimate roofing, enter data into CAD files, etc.

You want to find a laser distance measure that checks off all your needs and stays within budget. Any of the bonus features you can get for the same price are, well, a bonus!

What’s the Big Deal?

Though Klein has a growing collection of self-leveling lasers, the Green Planar Laser Level is their first that can tackle 360º of hi-vis laser coverage across the X, Y, and Z planes. Upward and downward plumb spots also mark the intersection of the Y and Z planes to help you keep your layouts straight and squared-up.

What’s also pretty helpful with the Klein Green Planar is the rechargeability. Rather than horsing around with AA or AAA batteries, you can recharge the Li-Ion battery via the included USB cable. Klein tells us that the level can run for around 9 hours on a charge.

In addition to the Green Laser Level, Klein has also released a lightweight aluminum tripod that works with all of their levels as well as any camera that uses a 1/4-20 mounting thread. The adjustable legs and non-skid feet give you stability even on uneven terrain, while the pan and tilt handle lets you adjust quickly and easily. An integrated bullseye level helps you keep the laser level on a flat plane. When the job’s done, you can collapse the tripod and store it away in the travel case.

Kapro Measurement Tools Span The Trades

This tape measure features a double-printed blade for horizontal and vertical quick reading and marking. Triple-colored and oversized gradations also provide clear readings in any lighting conditions.

Kapro 500 Steel Power Tape Measure

The Kapro 500 Spring-Loaded Return Tape Measure offers a compact and readily visible approach to taking measurements in carpentry, drywall, construction, and home improvement projects.

These tape measures feature a steel blade with a spring-loaded blade return and a one-touch locking mechanism. The tape itself is easy to read at a glance.

Kapro offers the 500 Series in 3m, 5m, and 8m lengths. As of right now, Kapro hasn’t offered us price points for these models, and it doesn’t look like there’s a way to order these models through the Kapro website…yet.

With measuring 1500V DC solar panel installations, electricians have come across a new question: Most current AC/DC clamp meters carry a safety rating of CATIII 1000V. Can you use these tools to measure a 1500 V DC solar panel installation? The answer has some caveats. Fortunately, Fluke plans to bypass the problem with the Fluke 393 FC CAT III 1500V True-RMS Clamp Meter.

The Fluke 393 FC CAT III 1500 V True-RMS clamp meter does something very new and necessary. It’s the world’s first test tool with a CAT III 1500 V rating. That means it can safely test solar installations operating at 1500 volts DC under a variety of conditions. It goes way beyond something like the Fluke T6-1000 clamp meter.

Other Great Fluke 393 FC CAT 3 1500V Clamp Meter Features

The Fluke 393 offers a thin jaw for easy access to cables in crowded combiner boxes. You get the expected Fluke build quality and an IP54 rating to protect against the elements. The tool provides DC power measurement (kVA), audio polarity, and visual continuity features. It also records test results to your smartphone (and uploads them to the cloud) using Fluke Connect software.

Why It Matters

Admittedly, we don’t do a ton of solar panel installations personally, but we see them going up all around us. You may wonder why a product like the Fluke 393 FC makes any difference. These larger “solar farms” use higher voltage lines. Many electricians use AC/DC clamp meters that carry a safety category of CATIII 1000V. Since the solar panel installation isn’t categorized into any particular category due to its floating voltage, you can use these CAT III 1000V clamp meters to measure 1500V DC between the terminals without any issues.

The problem arises if and when the power conditioner is connected and grounded. Then, the solar panel installation falls under the CATIII and CATIV category. At that point, you need to take care to use the proper products (like the Fluke 393 FC) when taking measurements during the installation process.

Unfortunately, we’re still waiting on pricing and availability for the Fluke 393 FC clamp meter, but we’ll update this page when that info becomes available.
