DeWalt Continues Electric Lawn Mower Line with the 21.5-inch Self-Propelled Model
We love watching battery-powered lawn equipment mature each year as more and more manufacturers create new products and improve others. DeWalt is tackling the runtime issue with two new lawn mowers. The DeWalt DCMWSP255Y2 and DCMWSP255U2 21.5-inch self-propelled lawn mower each come with two different battery options. Will these options prove significant enough to deliver just the right amount of runtime to suit your yard?
DeWalt 21.5-inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower – The Big Deal
This is a rear-wheel drive self-propelled lawn mower with auto-sensing technology. That adjusts the brushless motor driving the blade so that the speed (RPM) varies based on the thickness of the grass.
No matter where you live, the DeWalt DCMWSP255 should let you cut the grass to your preferred height. The lawnmower has a variable cutting height range of 1.5 to 4-inches. As with many lawn mowers, you can choose to mulch or bag your grass. DeWalt also offers a true side discharge option (with chute) as well.
Another notable feature is the fold-over handle. While almost standard on consumer-level mowers now, it makes it easy to transport and store your tool when you put it up for the week (or season). With the handle folded, you can store the mower upright. In that position, it takes up roughly 70% less space.

Coming from the front wheel drive DCMWSP244 to this rear wheel drive DCMWSP255, there are a couple differences. With the FWD 244 model, the belt/pulley system is on top of the deck, while with the RWD 255 version, it is actually below the deck. This causes the grass clippings to build up a bit against the plastic housing of the belt/pulley system, and also makes the clippings kind of bounce around under the deck, creating a choppy noise when mowing. Not sure if they updated the electronics, but the RWD seems to switch into the “high speed” mode more often/under… Read more »
