Stihl Zero-Turn Lawn Mower Options Launch With Focuses On Pro And Homeowner Markets

Stihl joins forces with Briggs & Stratton for a line of zero-turn lawn mower models to add to their outdoor power equipment arsenal. The collaboration between these two companies aims to expand product offerings across the country. This mower lineup will even be made in the USA using global materials, bringing more jobs and opportunities to U.S.-based manufacturers.

Stihl makes some of the best chainsaws and other handheld equipment and manufactures a ton of products for lawn care and landscaping. With the introduction of zero-turn mowers to the company’s roster, Stihl will have what we consider to be one of the most robust ranges of outdoor power equipment in America.

Made in the USA

These mowers will be manufactured in the USA to keep them consistent with Stihl’s production and quality standards. Stihl is understandably enthusiastic about working with Briggs & Stratton and its long history in the lawncare/landscape industry.

“The introduction of zero-turn mowers allows our network of authorized local STIHL Dealers to offer an even greater breadth of product solutions for our customers who turn to STIHL for world class products and support to meet their garden and landscape needs.

“Working with Briggs & Stratton, a well-established leader in this product category, allows us to bring a superior product to market for both demanding professionals and discerning homeowners.”

Terry Horan, Stihl CEO and President

“We take great pride that STIHL has seen in Briggs & Stratton what we have known for years… We design, engineer and manufacture the best zero-turn mowers on the market.

“With a 114-year legacy of power application and manufacturing expertise, Briggs & Stratton is a trusted leader in this industry… We look forward to applying our superior product and manufacturing capabilities to produce STIHL zero-turn mowers.”

Steve Andrews, Briggs & Stratton CEO and President

Bracketing the Market

Stihl zero-turn mowers are launching with 5 separate lines and a total of 19 individual models on the Briggs & Stratton system. These include a variety of engine options from Kawasaki, Vanguard, and Briggs & Stratton, as well as a suite of accessories.

Stihl is also including models for every ZT mowing application— from Pro-grade reliability to farming and ranching models, and even down to homeowner-targeted machines.

Stihl Zero Turn Lawn Mower: 700 and 900 Series

Stihl Zero Turn Lawn Mower: 700 and 900 Series

Beginning with the more high-end, professional-grade lineup, the Stihl 700-series and 900-series ZTs cover the meat of the lineup with a total of 12 models.

Deck widths range from 52 to 72 inches. While lines from other brands often include 48-inch options for their ZTs, it looks like Stihl is leaving that one out for now. Perhaps we’ll see a stand-on range in the future that covers the smaller deck widths.

There are a variety of high-performance engine options, including Vanguard or Kawasaki EFI engines, or a Kawasaki carbureted engine.

Both series mowers have four-wheel suspension with mowing deck height compensation. Additionally, they feature independent front suspension with upper and lower control arms reminiscent of the ISX mower series from Ferris (a Briggs & Stratton brand). This system uses four steel control rods and a coil-over shock suspension. In our experience, you get a smooth ride from mowers that use this system.

The Hydro-Gear ZT transaxles give you a top speed of 12 mph in the 900-series and 10 mph in the 700-series. Both go up to 5 mph in reverse.

With the 700-series, you get a deluxe seat with armrests. The 900-series takes it a step up, giving you a premium suspension seat with armrests and an adjustable backrest.

Stihl Zero-Turn Lawn Mower Financing and Warranty

There will be several financing plans to make it easier for professional landscapers to include these ZTs in their fleets. Qualified customers can get 0% financing, as well as low APR programs. Stihl sweetens the pot by offering professionals financing through a Stihl dealer the option to include Stihl handheld tools in the same purchase for financing.

All Stihl zero-turn mowers are eligible for financing.

Stihl includes a 3-year limited warranty with all of its zero-turn mowers. Consumer models carry 3 years or 500 hours, whichever comes first. For professional models, that number goes up to 3 years or 1500 hours. Expect to see them at authorized Stihl dealers starting in January 2023.

Greenworks Commercial Launches OptimusZ Zero-Turn And Stand-On Lawn Mowers

Highlighting the 2022 Equip Expo (formerly GIE), the Greenworks Commercial OptimusZ line of zero-turn and stand-on lawn mowers turned a lot of heads. The design team set out to make the best ride-on lawn mowers, period. In doing so, they addressed every pain point they could think of.

This is a developing story. We’ll update this article as we learn more, so check back often for more details.

Greenworks Commercial OptimusZ Lawn Mower Power Source and Runtime

Stand-On Mower

Greenworks Commercial moves away from the 82V batteries they use in the handheld tools to a much larger battery style. There are 8kWh, 18kWh, and 24kWh battery banks. Using an LFP lithium battery system, these high-density packs have been put through serious tests, including drop testing from 30 feet. Overall, the lithium/iron/phosphate cathode creates a safer, more stable high-density pack than the NMC (lithium/manganese/cobalt) cathode packs.

At the beginning of the design phase, the product team put the battery directly under the seat and built the rest of the mower around it. This gives the mower a lower center of gravity than other battery or gas options, helping it safely mow slopes up to 25°. It also makes for a more compact mower with less length in the back where an engine would normally go.

For most commercial battery-powered zero-turn mowers, all-day runtime is tricky. That’s not the case for the Greenworks Commercial OptimusZ. It’s capable of mowing up 8 hours—that’s 8 actual mowing hours—and cutting up to 21 acres on a charge.

Speaking of charging, using the latest battery and charger technology, your mower can be back up to full charge in as little as 3 hours.

Greenworks Commercial OptimusZ Lawn Mower Performance

Greenworks Commercial OptimusZ Lawn Mower

Battery-powered lawn mowers keep gaining performance with some models claiming 25HP gas equivalence. However, the OptimusZ pushes the envelope much further, boasting the equivalent of a 65 HP (1040cc) gas engine.

Using direct drive electronically controlled brushless motors, the blade tip speed is dialed in at 19,000 FPM. Thanks to its impressive battery technology and what Greenworks calls its PowrTraq Smart Drive System, the mower is able to maintain that blade speed, even in thick grass which slows the blades on gas engines. The result is a high-quality cut in just about any condition.

Greenworks Commercial OptimusZ Lawn Mower Models

There are several zero-turn and stand-on options available. Here’s the skinny:

Small Stand-On Models (8kWh Battery)

  • 32-inch deck
  • 36-inch deck

Large Stand-On Models (18kWh and 24kWh Battery Options)

  • 48-inch deck
  • 52-inch deck
  • 60-inch deck

Zero-Turn Models (18kWh and 24kWh Battery Options)

  • 48-inch deck
  • 52-inch deck
  • 60-inch deck

Automated Models

In addition to the zero-turn and stand-on models, there are also automated Greenworks OptimusZ zero-turn lawn mowers in the works for late 2023. Relying on RTK GPS, these are accurate to 1 inch. Even better, they are 2-in-1 mowers, capable of running autonomously or with a human operator.

Additional Highlights

  • Industry-first low-profile hub drive motors in the rear wheels
  • Halo lighting system allows operators to see and be seen, even after dark
  • Folding ROPS bar
  • 80% fewer moving parts compared to gas models
  • CAN bus system

Greenworks Commercial OptimusZ Lawn Mower Maintenance

The OptimusZ deal with the maintenance of your mower fleet with just two regular needs: sharpening the blades and greasing the front casters. Aside from that, there are no pulleys, belts, filters, or other concerns. It’s just 2000 hours of hassle-free operation that avoids downtime.

That’s not to say that issues can’t ever happen. It’s lawn care, and stuff happens. Greenworks Commercial created a Fleet Connect system that delivers diagnostic information directly to you and your Greenworks service team. The goal is for it to identify service points proactively before they become issues that create downtime. When it comes to things like a branch blocking a blade, you can see in the app where the problem is, making it quicker to deal with it and get back to work.

Additionally, the system allows for 4G/GPS theft protection and OTA (over-the-air) software upgrades.

Greenworks Commercial OptimusZ Lawn Mower Price

We’re still waiting for official pricing on the full line. Early numbers suggest the 60-inch zero-turn will run close to $26,000.

Each mower is designed to ensure that you save money, usually by the end of the first year. Keep your eyes open for our detailed breakdown of how much you can save.

The Bottom Line

There are more players than ever in the battery-powered zero-turn market, creating serious competition as the industry continues its shift away from gas. The Greenworks Commercial OptimusZ zero-turn and stand-on lawn mowers are so well-developed that they are the most effective way for professional crews to transition away from gas. Even hard-core gas crews owe it to themselves to give these mowers a demo and feel what battery power is capable of.

Exmark’s Electric Mower Lineup Adds A Stand-On Commercial Mower

By now, most Pros in the landscaping industry are well aware of electric solutions for lawn care. Whether you use them or not, there’s no question that electric mowers are carving their way onto the scene. Adding to the list of options, the Exmark Vertex V-Series electric stand-on mower aims to give landscaping professionals an alternative to gas power without sacrificing performance.

Exmark Vertex V-Series Electric Stand-On Lawn Mower: The Big Deal

The Vertex V-Series certifies itself as Exmark’s first stand-on electric mower to date. Its electric design reduces the need for maintenance and eliminates the fumes produced by gas-powered machines. Belt maintenance and replacement are also a thing of the past thanks to the mower’s electric spindle motors.

Exmark designed this mower with the professional in mind to deliver commercial quality cuts with the long runtimes needed for a day on the job. Its HyperCell electric system uses 8 HyperCell batteries to provide you with up to 7 hours of runtime per charge. These batteries also run cooler and can give you a longer overall service life.

The Vertex V-Series uses commercial-grade wheel motors with a planetary transmission to deliver high-torque power, with ground speeds up to 10 MPH.

Additionally, this mower features Horizon360 Connect smart equipment, which provides app-based connection to monitor your machine in real-time. Using the Horizon360 app, you can monitor your mower’s equipment data, battery charge status, and location information.

Additional Features

  • LED lights
  • Manual deck lift
  • Fuel indicator
  • Side discharge

Thoughts On The Exmark Vertex V-Series Electric Stand-On Lawn Mower

The first question we always have when we see a new electic ride-on lawn mower is… what power source does it use?

In this case, Exmark goes with an 8-battery configuration, totalling 18.4 kWh of capacity. That’s a lot, and it’s what makes the 7-hour runtime claim plausible. If those batteries are easily swappable, it opens up even more possibilities than battery-powered commercial mowers with an integrated power source.

We’re waiting to see this for ourselves at GIE (now called the Equip Expo) in October, and there are still some questions we have about voltage, charging, comfort features, pricing and much more. However, the mere fact that Exmark is launching this product in spring 2023 is a big deal and it won’t surprise us one bit to see a matching 60-inch zero-turn when we visit Kentucky in a few weeks.

Until then, be sure to let us know any questions you have in the comments below so we can get answers to those as well.

DR Power Battery-Powered Zero Turn Mower Boasts Higher Quality Construction

From the moment our local dealer rolled the DR Power ZT5E electric battery-powered zero-turn mower off the trailer, we could tell it was different than most of the battery ZTs we’ve reviewed. The longer we used it, the more it proved it’s in a different class.

DR Power Zero-Turn Lawn Mower Cutting Performance

Controls

Touch Screen Controls

When you press the power button on the driver’s left side, there’s a click, and then the control panel on the right kicks on. Before you can use the mower, there’s a passcode you need to enter. There will be a default one from the dealer and you can reset it to whatever you like.

The control panel is a touchscreen and the primary settings you’ll use are for the blade and drive speeds. We mowed with both settings in high, but if you’re mowing particularly bumpy ground or need to extend your runtime, you may want to change them.

Additionally, you have control over the screen brightness, a section to view any faults the computer detects, the position of the lap bars, and the presence of an operator in the seat.

Once you have the mower on and you disengage the parking brake, the mower operates almost exactly like a gas ZT with lap bars and pull-up blade engagement button. The steering and acceleration are very natural and responsive.

Cutting Power and Quality

DR Power Battery-Powered Zero-Turn Lawn Mower Review

The combination of the rainy season and a teenager who wasn’t exactly motivated to get the mowing done left us with plenty of high grass testing areas. When we first started cutting, we were prepared to baby the mower a bit the way we normally do with battery ZTs when the grass gets this high, but it wasn’t necessary. The mower was able to handle more than we expected.

We did find some patches where we were able to stall the blades, though. When that happens, you need to shut off and restart the mower. One thing we noticed is that when you hit thick patches that begin to slow the blade RPMs down, the drive wheels seem to slow in response as well.

The side discharge throw wasn’t as far considering how strong the cutting was, though it was certainly effective. The three direct drive brushless motors run the blades at tip speeds up to 14.9 fpm, and it seems that they’re dialed in to give you the best cutting power by trading off a little bit of clipping throw compared to a gas mower.

On the other hand, the evenness of the cut was excellent. If you happen to experience an uneven cut, DR has instructions in the manual to get it back to that fresh from the factory quality.

ZT5E Runtime

DR Power 48V batteries

DR Power uses suitcase-style 48V batteries to run its zero-turn mowers. Each one has a 2.5kWh capacity (2500Wh) and you can put up to three of them in both mower versions. Our test model was the 48-inch and DR told us to expect 45 minutes out of one pack, 1 hour and 30 minutes from two packs, or 2 hours and 15 minutes from three packs.

We actually got a little more than those estimates. We started with two batteries, cut the lawn down to 5 inches, and then cut it a second time down to 3 inches. By the time we were done, we ran for 1 hour and 50 minutes on those two batteries—20 minutes longer than DR’s estimate.

Based on our testing, we believe DR’s estimate of 5 acres max with three batteries is on the conservative side. Your specific conditions have an effect on how fast you can mow, of course, but given you’re mowing maintained lawn, you can get between 6 and 7 acres in optimal scenarios.

It’s really nice to have equipment exceed your expectations.

Charging

Charging isn’t quite as simple as “plug it in and let it go” but once you know the process, it’s not too bad. First of all, charging happens onboard, so there’s no reason to lug those big battery packs around.

Start by turning the mower on (yes, that sounds counterintuitive). Plug the charger into the mower next and then plug the charger into a 110V wall outlet.

There’s a “No Charger Power Detected” message that comes on the display briefly. Once the charger finishes powering up, it goes away.

Especially if you’re using the three-battery configuration, plan on letting the charger run overnight. And don’t plug your Tesla into the same circuit. Also, avoid using an extension cord. The charger’s full cord length is generous and you don’t want to starve it by using too small of an extension cord gauge.

DR Power Zero-Turn Lawn Mower Design

Build

DR Power Battery-Powered Zero-Turn Lawn Mower Review

On top of the cutting power, another major difference we noticed about DR’s build is how sturdy the mower feels when you’re on it. The beefiness of the overall build feels like DR took a gas mower and swapped out the engine for brushless motors and batteries. With its solid frame and 12-gauge steel deck, it doesn’t feel as stripped down for weight as most of the residential ZTs do.

Seat Comfort

DR Power Seat

The DR Power zero-turn mower has a very comfortable seat. There’s a tensioning knob to help you find the right amount of spring support for your weight and it has a generous amount of front-to-back adjustment. The only catch it the seat adjustment lever is somewhat easy to bend out of shape if you try to push it in the wrong direction.

Additional Highlights

  • 8 MPH top forward speed, 3 MPH reverse
  • 1/4-inch deck height adjustment from 1 1/2 to 5 inches
  • HydroGear EZTe transaxles
  • 2 x anti-scalp wheels
  • 20 x 9.5-inch drive wheels
  • 11 x 5-inch front caster wheels
  • Adjustable lap bars
  • 2 x USB charging ports
  • 2 x cup holders (one on each side)
  • Phone holder

DR Power Zero-Turn Lawn Mower Price

You can get the DR Power ZT5E as the 48-inch model we tested or with a 60-inch deck. The 48-inch retails for $12,699.99 and the 60-inch is $13,799.99. However, both mowers were on sale at the time of writing with $1200 off on the 48-inch and $1300 off on the 60-inch.

Batteries are sold separately and run $1599.99 each.

For residential customers, there is a 3-year/500-hour warranty on the mower and 5-year/1000-hour warranty on the batteries.

The Bottom Line

The DR Power electric battery-powered zero-turn lawn mower is clearly a step or two up from any of the pure residential options out there. From the build to the performance, DR finds itself creating a Prosumer class for electric ZTs, filling the gap between residential and more expensive professional models. It does its best work on larger lawns and properties with 1 – 6 acres of mowing for owners that demand higher quality than entry-level mowers offer.

EGO Introduces A New Style Of Steering To Its Zero Turn Mower

EGO’s original Z6 zero-turn lawn mower changed what we thought a battery-powered model would be. The team followed it up with a 52-inch version, upping the power along with the deck size. So what’s next? A 60-inch deck? Nope. The EGO eSteer zero-turn lawn mower is targeting a different aspect of user experience.

EGO Power+ eSteer 42-Inch Zero Turn Mower: The Big Deal

EGO Power+ eSteer 42-Inch Zero Turn Lawn Mower Steering Wheel

It’s clear from the photos that this zero-turn mower is special due to its steering technology. The eSteer technology allows it to be driven like a car using the mower’s racing-style steering wheel, while still giving you the tight turn radius you would expect with a zero-turn mower.

Then there’s the steering wheel itself. The controls shift from the driver’s right side the way it is on the original Z6 models and puts them all at your fingertips. From the looks of things, all the same controls appear to be there.

Lacking lap bars to push forward and back, you now have an accelerator pedal that defaults to forward with a pair of thumb bars on the wheel to shift into reverse.

Combining the ease of a lawn tractor’s steering wheel with the turning radius of a ZT and adding controls and tech at your fingertips is something we haven’t seen before on a residential riding mower. Let us know in the comments if you’re excited about the concept or if you prefer traditional ZT controls.

Exmark 2022 Radius X-Series Features Major Power Upgrade Plus Other Bonuses

Geared toward professional and commercial lawncare workers, the 2022 Exmark Radius X-Series Zero-Turn Lawn Mower includes a number of new features. We dug deeper to explore what updates the 2022 model has and how they affect lawn care Pros.

2022 Exmark Radius X-Series Zero-Turn Lawn Mower: The Big Deal

There are quite a few notable new features with the update of the X-Series Radius. The main talking point is the bigger, more powerful engine. This mower features a 31HP Kawasaki twin-cylinder engine, which Exmark says makes it the most powerful Radius model to date. For comparison, the 2021 model featured a 23.5 HP engine, so the 32% power increase is impressive.

There’s an update to the cutting depth of the 60-inch deck, too. The E- and S-Series models included a 5-inch deck depth, while the Radius X-Series features a larger 5.5-inch deck depth. The extra 1/2-inch increase and higher-power engine let you mow heavier grass at faster speeds.

Speaking of speed, you can expect variable ground speeds of up to 10 MPH with the Radius X-Series, compared to the E- and S-Series’ 9 MPH maximum speeds.

Another new upgrade to the Radius X-Series is the inclusion of Exmark’s premium full-suspension operator’s seat. You can adjust the seat based on your size and ride quality preferences. Exmark tells us the seat’s design also helps reduce vibration with an Elastomeric Vibration Control foam base.

Diving into the performance features, the 2022 model features Exmark’s Flow Control baffle technology to improve the cut quality. Additionally, Lazer Z-style deck strut insolation technology eliminates sway, eases deck height adjustment, and reduces vibration.

Additional Features

  • Side-discharge design
  • Larger 24-inch Kenda drive tires and front caster wheels
  • Heavy-duty unibody steel frame
  • Improved balance by housing heavier components at the mower’s base
  • Maintenance-free sealed bearing blade spindles
  • Digital hour meter
  • Window-style fuel gauge
  • Integrated hitch and jack receiver (jack sold separately)

EGO Zero Turn Riding Mower Line Adds A 52-Inch Option

The team at EGO whet our appetites about a ZT they had in the works a while back. After a successful entry with their 42-inch EGO battery-powered zero turn riding mower, there’s now a 52-inch option for larger lawns.

Check out our video review of the EGO Z6!

Pros

  • Uses the same 56V ArcLithium batteries as other EGO lawn care products
  • Onboard fast charging system
  • LED lights cover both safety during the day and low/no-light mowing
  • Adjustable seat is comfortable and fits a wide range of heights/weights
  • Eyes-forward LED charge status indicator
  • 5 drive and cutting speeds
  • Powerful cutting matches the experience of cutting with a gas-powered residential ZT
  • Easily cuts 1-1/2 acres on a charge with 2 acres possible on the stock battery set

Cons

  • Unconventional 1/3-inch deck height increments

EGO 56V Battery-Powered Zero Turn Riding Mower Power Source

Perhaps most importantly to current EGO users, they’re keeping their riding mowers on the same battery platform as the rest of their 56V lineup. Each mower holds up to six batteries.

The 10Ah batteries that come with the 42-inch model give it a potential capacity of 3360 watt-hours. Four batteries come with the kit, so you have 2240 watt-hours to work with out of the box.

The 52-inch model comes with six 12Ah batteries for a total capacity of 4032 watt-hours.

Let’s not overlook the importance of EGO’s design. By using their 56V battery and Peak Power technology, they use the same batteries as the rest of their tools. You can pop them out to use in other EGO 56V tools or use the batteries you already have to extend your mower’s runtime. You can also swap the batteries out if you have a larger area to cover than what you can get from a single set.

If you want to swap in other packs, there is a minimum capacity you need to hit. We tested it with 10Ah, 7.5Ah, 5.0Ah, and 2.5Ah batteries and any combination of at least 15Ah brings the mower to life.

Charging an EGO 56V Battery-Powered Zero Turn Riding Mower

Another impressive part of the system is the charger. It’s capable of charging up to six batteries simultaneously and charges them while they’re on the mower.

Four 10Ah batteries take 2 hours, and a full load of six takes 3 hours. For the 52-inch model, expect it to have all six 12Ah batteries back to 100% in 4 hours.

After just 15 minutes of charging, EGO tells us you get enough juice to cover a 1/4-acre of grass for those times when you need to finish up but don’t want to wait for a full charge cycle.

We ran the mower down to 6% battery which is where it kicks into limp mode and encourages you to head back to the charger. From there, the four 10Ah batteries took 1 hour, 53 minutes to get back to 100%—slightly faster than EGO’s estimate.

The charger is pretty substantial. However, there are keyholes on the back so you can hang it on a wall and you have a generous 15-foot total reach with the cords.

EGO 56V Battery-Powered Zero Turn Riding Mower Additional Highlights

Traditional Design

The mowers maintain a traditional ZT profile with independently-controlled 18-inch drive wheels on the back and 11-inch 360° caster wheels on the front to help you make those tight turns using the lap bars.

Like most ZTs, the long wheelbase of the mower becomes noticeable when you’re mowing around objects. It’s certainly capable of tight zero-radius turns, but getting the cutting deck to hug smaller trees, buried tank covers, and other obstacles is a challenge.

LEDs for Sight and Safety

Looking at the front, you can see the LEDs. These are always on when the mower is powered up, but hit the light button on the control panel, and you’ll activate even more to help you mow in low or even no light.

LED Lights

There’s another set of LEDs on the rear that blink when you’re in Reverse to get the attention of anyone who might walk across your path.

Height Adjustments

Moving around to the driver’s right, you’ll find the manual deck height adjustment bar. It adjusts the 42-inch steel deck between 1-1/2 and 4-1/2 inches with 10 levels.

Deck Height

Those levels end up being at 1/3-inch increments. It’s a little odd and but isn’t a big deal once you find the height you want to stick with.

It’s a similar story for the 52-inch model. Aside from the width difference, it’s also a fabricated deck instead of stamped.

Device Storage and Charging

The EGO battery-powered zero turn riding mower gives you a handy storage area with a magnetic closure and interior USB charging. It’s big enough to store your phone, wallet, and keys if you like.

Next to that is a welcome cup holder with two sizes that hold a water bottle, malt beverage, or even an oversized mug from your local corner store.

If you want to have quicker access to your phone, there’s a slot on the right side by the control panel that you can put slide it securely into.

Seating Arrangements

At the center of it all, EGO placed a comfortable seat with pivoting armrests. In fact, it’s the most comfortable among the residential battery-powered ZT’s we’ve tested.

Clint was able to find a good setting for his considerably lighter frame but did bottom it out in bumpier areas. A few turns to tighten it up and he was good to go.

On the other hand, my 6-foot, 2-inch, 200-pound build needed to increase the tension and set the seat back some. However, I was also able to find a good fit with room to spare.

Most of EGO’s competitors use a non-adjustable spring system that’s not as comfortable for notably light or heavy riders.

Eyes Forward Charge Indicator

Looking forward from the driver’s seat, an LED indicator sits between your feet to let you keep an eye on your charge levels without taking your eyes off of what’s in front of you. It’s brilliant and we LOVE it!

More LCD Info

There’s plenty of other information on the control panel, including connecting to your mower with Bluetooth and calibrating for left or right drift. It’s by far the most advanced control system we’ve seen so far. Check out your manual for more details on what’s in there.

EGO Z6 Zero Turn Lawn Mower LCD Control Screen

Deck Wash

EGO includes a deck wash hose connection on the driver’s left. Aside from that and blowing off any dry grass that collects around the mower, there’s not much else to worry about before putting it away.

Starting the EGO 56V Battery-Powered Zero Turn Riding Mower

For their first ZT, EGO went with a 42-inch steel deck that uses a pair of 21-inch blades. Its four independent brushless motors give it the gas equivalent of a 22 HP engine and a top transport speed of 8 MPH.

The 52-inch model steps up to a 3-blade design with a 25 HP equivalent performance level.

Power and Blade Switch

To turn the mower on, make sure the key is in first. Pressing the power button gives you a charge status. Press and hold the power button to bring the mower to life.

Push the parking brake on the left with your foot and you’re ready to roll.

Control Freak

The EGO battery-powered zero turn riding mower has separate drive and blade speed controls. Each has four modes plus a bonus you can jump into by holding the button down at its highest level.

EGO Z6 Zero Turn Lawn Mower Controls

Drive speeds while cutting range from 3 to 7 MPH and you get to the top 8 MPH travel speed by pressing and holding the button when it’s in high.

For the blade speed, the bottom two speeds are good for light cutting in dry conditions and the top two speeds are better for thicker, wetter grass. There’s a turbo mode for the blades if you press and hold the button after getting to the top speed. It’s great for particularly tough patches, but we didn’t find it necessary for any of our cutting.

There are three drive modes to work with: Control, Standard, and Sport. These define the aggressiveness of the acceleration and turning.

EGO Z6 Zero Turn Lawn Mower Rear

Control mode is great if you’re new to zero turn mowers or need to be careful around landscape obstacles. Standard mode feels very much like most residential zero turns we’ve used while Sport mode gets you into the quickest accelerations and turns. We were even able to spin the tires slightly in Sport mode.

We recommend sticking with the Standard mode unless you’re an advanced ZT veteran or need to outrun a summer thunderstorm.

EGO 56V Battery-Powered Zero Turn Riding Mower Performance

Cutting

Cutting a combination of Bahia and St. Augustine grasses, the cut quality was excellent—taking our test yard from 5 inches down to 3-1/2 inches. At least that’s what we presume the height was considering those 1/3-inch increments.

EGO Z6 Zero Turn Lawn Mower Cutting

With both mowers, there was plenty of power behind the blades. We could cut at the lower two speeds, but the lift and side ejection were much better at high speed. That’s where the mower cuts most like a quality gas model. That’s also the setting that should give you the best mulching if you add the optional plug.

EGO 52-Inch Battery-Powered Zero-Turn Lawn Mower

EGO 56V Battery-Powered Zero Turn Lawn Mower Runtime

We had about an acre of yard to cut and the runtime was more than enough to cover that. We ran our runtime test in Standard mode with both the drive and blade speeds set at level 4. That gave us enough juice to mow right at an hour using the 42-inch model and just the four batteries that came with it.

EGO Z6 Zero Turn Lawn Mower Overhead

With the same settings and similar lawn conditions, you should be able to easily cover 1 1/2 acres. 2 acres isn’t an unreasonable assumption for properties where you’re making long runs between turns. Filling out the battery capacity with two more 10Ah packs, EGO claims you can cut up to 3 acres and we believe that’s a realistic estimate depending on your specific conditions.

With a larger deck and bigger batteries, you should expect to cut more area. Setting the mower the same (Standard mode, setting 4 for the blades and drive), we cut for 1 hour and 15 minutes. If you could mow at the top speed the entire time, that would cover more than 4 1/2 acres. At a more realistic 4 – 5 MPH average, you’re looking at 2 1/2 to 3 acres.

EGO Z6 Zero Turn Riding Mower Price

As a full system with the new charger and four 10Ah batteries, the 42- inch EGO Zero Turn retails for $5499. Given what else is available currently, that’s a pretty attractive price for a lithium-ion ZT with the design they’re offering.

If the 52-inch model fits your needs better, it retails for $6999 with six 12Ah batteries.

Register your purchase and EGO covers the mower, charger, and batteries for 5 years.

The Bottom Line

The EGO 56V battery-powered zero turn riding mower shakes up what you can expect from a battery-powered rider. It’s more expensive than some of the other options, but it’s also a step up in design. In our opinion, the design team clearly did their homework, and EGO has delivered the top-of-the-line options for battery-powered residential zero turns.

HART Enters the Battery-Powered Riding Lawn Mower Game With 30-Inch Model

When HART invited us to Anderson, South Carolina for an OPE event, we knew we were going to see something brand new. We didn’t know that the Walmart exclusive brand was jumping into the riding mower segment, though. We were able to spend some time cutting and discover who the HART battery-powered riding lawn mower is a good fit for.

HART Battery-Powered Riding Lawn Mower Performance

Power Source

One of the big deals for HART is this mower jumps up to a completely new voltage level for them: 80-volt. Twin 15-inch blades handle the cutting while three brushless motors take care of driving them and the rear wheels.

Cutting

Hart Battery-Powered Riding Lawn Mower | Jen from Belts and Boxes

With acres of grass to test on, we got to work. The size and overall design remind me of the old Snapper rear-engine model I used to use as a kid. Even at 6 feet, 2 inches, I was able to find a reasonably comfortable fit by putting the seat all the way back.

You control the speed with an accelerator pedal on the right. To reverse the mower, there’s a secondary pedal right behind the main one rather than having a forward/reverse switch on the control deck.

Even though I wasn’t able to GPS test it, the forward speed is impressive. Full throttle is more of a traveling speed than a cutting speed, as there was some clear loss of cut quality with the pedal to the metal.

All of the cutting we did was in grass well over what we expect on a normal weekly cut. The mower’s motors did an excellent job of keeping the blade RPMs up and I didn’t experience any blade stops due to clogging. I even dropped the mower deck down to its lowest position and was able to effectively keep cutting, though I did slow down to maintain good cut quality.

Runtime

There are two internal 80V batteries powering the mower. Expect to run up to an hour and cover an acre on one charge. HART includes a super charger that plugs directly into the mower and gets your batteries back up to full in two hours.

HART Battery-Powered Riding Lawn Mower Design Notes

Controls

Controls

HART uses a mercifully simple control system. Just turn the key to the “on” position, release the parking brake, and you’re off. The blades engage by pulling the red button up.

If you shift into reverse, the blades automatically stop. If you want them to keep running, hit the “Reverse Mode Option” button. You only have to hit it once and it will stay in that mode until you shut the mower off again.

Side Discharge, Mulch, or Bag

Side Discharge

Like most riding mowers, the default cutting mode is side discharge. HART includes a mulch plug and there are a couple of optional baggers. One is a traditional bag and the other has a blower assist. The assisted bagger adds a 700 CFM blower that clears the tube if it gets clogged with wet grass or high volume. Just press the “Clear Bagger Chute” button on the control panel to open it back up.

Comfort

Hart Battery-Powered Riding Lawn Mower Seat

HART’s seat is cushioned and sits on springs to deal with the natural bumps in your lawn. There are no armrests and there are more comfortable seats out there. However, that’s not too big of a deal considering this mower is designed for smaller lawns than many of the other riders on the market.

Additional Highlights

  • LED headlight for early morning or late evening cutting
  • 1 1/2 to 4 1/2-inch deck height with single-point adjustment
  • Fits through 42-inch gates
  • Maintenance-free design

HART Battery-Powered Riding Lawn Mower Price

HART is putting its riding lawn mower in select Walmart stores and online for $3999 starting May 1, 2022. Both the mower and the battery have a 5-year warranty.

The Bottom Line

The HART 80V battery-powered riding lawn mower does its best work on lawns from 1/4 to a full acre. It’s an easy mower to learn and use, and it’s not as intimidating as moving all the way to a zero-turn mower. If you’re a homeowner who wants to make your weekly lawn chores easier than using a walk-behind mower and leaving gas behind sounds appealing, this is a good fit for you.

Greenworks 60V CrossoverZ Zero-Turn Lawn Mower Launches at Tractor Supply

Greenworks is tossing its hat into the battery-powered zero-turn ring. We initially saw prototypes for the Greenworks Pro 60V zero-turn lawn mower and its lawn tractor cousin a couple of years ago. Now we have a final production model to test and we’re excited to see how it’s all come together.

Pros

  • Confident cutting
  • Cuts up to 2 acres on a charge
  • Has gas-like acceleration characteristics
  • Charges get all six batteries back to 100% In 90 minutes
  • Simple controls are easy to get used to
  • Uses the same batteries as other Greenworks 60V tools
  • Additional app-based features are available
  • Bagging kit available

Cons

  • No onboard charging option/requires three dual-port chargers

Greenworks 60V CrossoverZ Zero-Turn Lawn Mower Performance

Cutting

Greenworks has been in the battery-powered zero-turn space for years, starting with commercial-grade models. That experience trickles down to the development of the homeowner-focused 42-inch model.

One of the big differences is that the Greenworks 60V zero-turn mower starts with a completely different power source: 60V batteries. They’re the same 60V batteries that power their 60V string trimmers, chainsaws, and other lawn equipment. Even though you can run with one battery (we strongly discourage this), the kit comes with six 8.0Ah batteries and that’s the best way to run this mower.

Greenworks 60V batteries

With the gas equivalent of a 24 horsepower engine, the twin blades turn confidently at 3000 RPM and do not bog down as easily as battery-powered walk-behind mowers. It is possible to get the blades to bog, though, and the mower is best for lawns that you regularly mow rather than constantly tackling overgrowth.

Greenworks 60V CrossoverZ 42-Inch Zero-Turn Lawn Mower Review

Runtime

Greenworks rates the runtime at 1 hour. To test the claim, we kicked the drive and blade speeds to high and started cutting. Thanks to recent rain, it was a medium-heavy cut, taking 2 – 4 inches off in most sections. After 52 minutes and 5 seconds of continuous cutting, the mower went into limp mode when the batteries hit 5%. In our conditions, we mowed 1.5 acres.

Greenworks 60V CrossoverZ 42-Inch Zero-Turn Lawn Mower Review

Based on the deck size and what speed you’re able to run (bumpy ground and overgrown areas are going to be slower), Greenworks’ estimate of 2 acres is on point and some folks might even be able to cut a little more than that. Driving and running the blades at low speed can help extend your runtime if you need more.

Charging

Charging your batteries has some give and take. We prefer onboard charging, but that’s not the direction Greenworks is going right now. They include three dual-port chargers in the kit. You might raise your eyebrows at that, however, it actually gets all six batteries back to a full charge in just 90 minutes. That’s significantly faster than your other options.

Keep in mind these are 10-amp fast chargers. If you plug all three into one power strip, it’s not going to work.

Greenworks 60V CrossoverZ Zero-Turn Lawn Mower Field Notes

Transitioning to Battery Power

Greenworks is conscious that the switch from gas to battery power is a big step and they’re doing a couple of things to make it feel more natural.

They added a spring-loaded key start that acts just like the spring-loaded ignition on your gas model. It’s a little odd not hearing any startup sounds the way you do on an engine, but it’s helpful to have that action built in so you know you’ve turned it on.

The design team also dialed in the acceleration in the lap bars to feel similar to a gas residential zero-turn mower. You can typically get faster acceleration if you want from electric (ever ride in a Tesla?), and we like the extra attention here.

Greenworks 60V CrossoverZ 42-Inch Zero-Turn Lawn Mower Review

Overall, it took about 5 minutes to get used to driving. Once you get a feel for the lap bars and turning, it’s a very easy transition.

There’s an App for That

You can operate the mower just fine without the app, but for the complete experience, there are some added features. Start by scanning the QR code on your quick start guide, download the app, create an account if you don’t already have one, and pair the mower using the serial number and pairing code. It sounds more complicated than it is and takes less than 10 minutes to get started. There’s a step-by-step guide in the manual if you need more details.

Once you’re dialed in, here’s what the app adds:

  • Fault codes (codes also appear on the mower’s LCD screen)
  • Speed
  • Battery power
  • GPS location the last time the mower was connected

Additional Highlights

  • Reinforced stamped 12-gauge steel deck with hose adapter for cleanout
  • 1.5 to 4.5-inch deck height
  • Rear bucket can haul up to 200 pounds in addition to rider weight
  • Tows up to 300 pounds
  • 7.5 MPH maximum forward speed, 3 MPH maximum reverse speed
  • 20-inch rear wheels and 15-inch front wheels
  • Suitable for hills up to 15°
  • Simple LCD screen readout with battery charge status and fault codes
  • Dual LED headlights offer additional light for mowing in dark conditions or additional safety

Greenworks 60V CrossoverZ Zero-Turn Lawn Mower Price

Tractor Supply carries this Greenworks zero-turn lawn mower (and its lawn tractor cousin). The kit includes six 8.0Ah batteries and three dual-port chargers for $4999. The warranty period is the shorter of 4 years or 200 hours of operation.

The Bottom Line

Greenworks’ strengths are in the simplicity of its controls, the ease of helping you transition from gas ZTs, the cross-compatibility of its batteries, the speed of its charging, and its bonus rear hauling bucket. There are some trade-offs to consider compared to other options, but our overall impression of the Greenworks Pro 60V CrossoverZ Zero-Turn Lawn Mower is that it’s a success.

DEWALT Zero-Turn Mower Line Targets Professional Landscapers

You may be aware of DEWALT’s extensive line of battery-powered outdoor equipment products, but what about gas? DEWALT has a line of zero-turn lawn mower options designed specifically to meet the needs of professional crews. We’re teaming up with DEWALT to tell you more about them!

DEWALT Commercial Zero-Turn Lawn Mowers and Pro Support Hub

Whether you’re starting your own lawn care business or looking for a mower built for long hours on large properties, DEWALT commercial zero-turn lawn mowers are designed with you in mind. The line covers stand-on options up to 54 inches and ride-on models up to 60 inches. We’ll get into more specific details on those in a moment.

One big advantage is DEWALT’s Pro Support Hub. Using the website or app, this service experience takes commercial ownership to a different level. You can call, text, or use the online platform to get experienced one-on-one support for your maintenance and troubleshooting needs. There’s even video call capability so your support tech can see what you see.

In addition to guidance, you’re able to get help with part recommendations and purchases. The Pro Support Hub also lets you keep track of your purchases and store product information for future reference.

Of course, sometimes it’s more convenient to visit a local dealer or service center. The Pro Support Hub can help you find those closest to you and help provide priority service once you arrive.

From the Pro Support Hub to your local dealer, it’s all about reducing your downtime and keeping your equipment running.

DEWALT Z260 60 in. Commercial Zero-Turn Lawn Mower

DeWalt Zero Turn Mowers 60 inch

DEWALT’s flagship model in the commercial zero-turn lawn mower lineup is the Z260. It’s designed to tackle 4 to 10 acres with professional results.

It starts with a 24 horsepower Kawasaki® FS Series V-twin engine paired with a ZT-3400™ hydrostatic transmission that delivers up to 500 ft-lbs of output torque and tops out at 9 MPH (3.5 MPH in reverse).

The deck is 60 inches with 17 height positions (1 – 4.75 inches) and is constructed from reinforced fabricated 10-gauge steel. You can also grab the same mower with a 54-inch deck as the Z254.

For comfort and fit, an impact-absorbing seat, wide foot pan, and adjustable lap bars help tackle long days.

If you need another reason to pull the trigger on the Z260, DEWALT builds them in the USA using global materials.

Additional Highlights

  • Electronic PTO (power take off) switch
  • 1.5 x 3-inch tubular steel frame
  • 23 x 12-inch rear wheels
  • 13-inch offset front caster wheels
  • Rollover protection bar

DEWALT X554 54 in. Stand-On Commercial Zero-Turn Mower

DeWalt commercial stand-on zero-turn mowers

When you need the quick mounting and dismounting of a stand-on with a large mowing deck and a smaller trailering footprint, take a look at the DEWALT X554. It features a 26 horsepower Kawasaki® FT730v EFI Series engine with an electronic throttle, 12cc Hydro-Gear® pump, and Parker® Wheel motor transmissions for precise control through turns. It boasts an impressive up to 10 MPH forward speed and up to 5 MPH in reverse.

The X554 is the largest in the stand-on line, with a 54-inch 10-gauge fabricated steel deck. It’s capable of mowing from 1 to 5-inch heights and 2 – 4-acre properties are in its wheelhouse. There’s also a 48-inch version (X548).

To improve your comfort level, there’s an oversize, thick hip pad with two inches of height adjustment. A wide platform also gives your feet plenty of room to find a comfortable ride.

The wheels are worth noting because of their size. The rear wheels are a beefy 24 inches and the front caster wheels are 13 inches, helping you manage bumpy terrain.

Like the Z260, this model is also made in the USA using global materials.

Additional Highlights

  • Electronic PTO (power take off) switch
  • Tool-free access to key maintenance areas
  • 5-gallon fuel tank

Price: $10299 MSRP
