Just because it’s snowing doesn’t mean you need to break out your full-size snowblower, especially for those early and late-season lighter snowfalls. For those times when you just need to clear walkways or give the driveway a quick once-over, the Masterforce 20V cordless snow shovel might be just what the doctor ordered.

Editor’s Note: We’re still waiting on our first snow accumulation… since 1977. But just because we live in Florida doesn’t mean we’re completely snow-ignorant. We’ve got plenty of experience in Pennsylvania and Connecticut on our crew, so enjoy this walkthrough and don’t hate us too much for shooting photos on a bright 80° F day.

Masterforce 20V Cordless Snow Shovel Performance

Auger

Masterforce’s brushed motor turns the snow shovel’s 4.6-inch auger up to 2800 RPM. Its intake covers 12 inches of width and can handle snow depths up to 4 inches and throw it as far as 20 feet depending on the conditions. A rear scraper helps get packed snow near the bottom moving, though it’s not going to clear layers of ice.

This model uses a brushed motor and while it’s not as efficient or strong as a brushless motor, it keeps the price down (more on that shortly).

Masterforce 20V Cordless Snow Shovel Design Notes

Masterforce 20V Cordless Snow Shovel

Rather than going with a string trimmer head the way most attachment system snow shovels do, Masterforce has a rear-handle design. That makes it a bit easier when you need to apply some force behind it to get packed snow moving.

Just in front of that is a secondary handle that rotates 360° around the shaft and pivots forward or back. Combined with a telescoping shaft that’s adjustable for a total length of 46 to 54 inches, nearly everyone can find a comfortable working fit.

Telescoping Handle

The shaft has a split design and there’s an electrical connection at the attachment point rather than using a wire to run from the battery down to the motor. It also allows you to completely separate the two pieces instead of leaving them connected at a joint and gives it a smaller storage footprint if you want to break it down between uses.

If you don’t want to break it down, the base allows the shovel to stand up on its own on hard surfaces.

Masterforce 20V Cordless Snow Shovel

Without a battery, the tool weighs 7.4 pounds. Adding a 4.0Ah battery brings the total working weight up to 9.0 pounds.

Additional Highlights

  • Compatible with all Masterforce 20V FlexForce and Boost batteries

Masterforce 20V Cordless Snow Shovel Price

You can find this electric snow shovel at Menards for $179.99 as a kit. It includes the snow shovel, a 4.0Ah battery, a charger, and a storage bag. There’s no kit option available. One thing is different about this tool, though—it’s only in-store and not available online as we’re writing this.

When you look at premium options, such as EGO’s Multi-Head system with a snow shovel attachment ($399.99 for the kit, $189.99 for the attachment), Masterforce’s price tag is very attractive for value-minded shoppers.

The Bottom Line

Masterforce’s cordless snow shovel is a good choice to supplement your full-size snowblower for light snowfalls or to clear smaller areas such as walkways after heavier snowfall. While it doesn’t have the performance of premium brushless models, it doesn’t have a high price tag either. Grab it if you’re looking for a high-value cordless snow shovel.

EGO Snow Shovel Attachment Makes Light Clearing More Convenient

If you are like many others and use a bristle brush or rubber broom attachment to clear snow from patios, decks, and walkways, then EGO has the attachment for you! I had the opportunity to get an early look at the EGO Multi-Head snow shovel attachment in time for this year’s snow-clearing season.

Why Consider the EGO Multi-Head Snow Shovel Attachment?

EGO Multi-Head Snow Shovel Attachment Review

Powered snow shovels fill a need that is in between the big jobs and the small ones. You probably wouldn’t use one on a small set of stairs with a light dusting, or a long driveway with heavy snow. But there is a sweet spot where this type of tool really shines, and that’s on patios, decks, walkways, and driveways with light to moderate snow. That’s also how EGO is marketing it.

With a small profile of 14 inches of total width and 12 inches of clearing swath, this snow shovel can fit on single-tile walkways around the house. If you have the larger single-stage or two-stage snowblower, by the time you lugged it out of the shed, you could have the job done with this in your hands.

EGO Multi-Head Snow Shovel Attachment Performance

EGO Multi-Head Snow Shovel Attachment Review

The EGO 56V system is known for its high quality and handy features when compared to competitor models, and my experience with the snow shovel is no exception.

The powerful brushless motor translates to throwing pillowy plumes of snow 25 feet if you are hitting several inches of powdery snow. There’s an anti-stall system to keep you throwing snow. Instead of hitting a chunk and coming to a jarring halt, the motor slows down, grinds through it, and then revs back up. Only by moving fast through thick layers of icy snow did we actually get it to stall and stop entirely. If that happens, you need to release the trigger and pull it again to spin it back up.

On that note, knowing what to expect out of this powered snow shovel will make or break the experience. Clearing 2-3 inches of dry, powdery snow from the driveway and deck was a breeze, put a smile on my face, and got the chores done in record time!

However, clearing the 5-6 inches of heavy packed snow and ice from the driveway is doable with the SSA1200, but it’s more difficult than using a larger single-stage or two-stage snowblower.

The power isn’t necessarily the problem when compared to something like the Snow Joe iON 40V single-stage paddle blower, since I had them both chewing on and bogging down the same snow. But the form of the single-stage model supports the weight of the unit rather than the person holding it (AKA, me). It’s a considerable difference in terms of the physical energy you use (and subsequent back soreness the next day). Of course, that’s something you’re going to experience with any attachment system snow shovel.

Pro Tip: For clearing heavy snow, the snow shovel is easier to push when bracing the battery against your body and pushing forward with your legs rather than relying on your arms and back to do the work.

Runtime

The convenience of this highly portable snow-clearing power usually comes with a price, which is how much area you can clear on a charge. EGO claims that the SSA1200 will clear 4 inches of snow from a 4-car driveway using a 4.0Ah battery.

Lucky for us, we received 5 inches of snow with ice layers along with it, so it was a good test of battery endurance. After clearing our entire 4-car driveway, I still had 1 bar of a 4.0Ah battery left and no distinct loss of power.

I was also able to clear my sidewalks, patio, and deck before I needed to put the battery back on the charger. My entire snow-clearing needs were met on just one charge, which is a win in my book. My lower back felt it the next day, but we will discuss that later.

EGO Multi-Head Snow Shovel Attachment Design Notes

Changing Directions

You can change the direction of the throw 45° right or left by using the knob on the top of the unit, which rotates the guide fins in front of the auger.

The knob only has locking detents in the full left or right position, with several smaller detents in between. So there is flexibility with throw direction, and it will stay put until some harsh transitions work it one way or the other, but this was never an issue since I only threw snow full left, right, or straight.

The adjustment of the throw is a notable feature over some of the other brands with no guiding fins, such as the Ryobi 40V and the Hart 40V Powered Snow Shovels. The EGO SSA1200 boasts a farther throw than the Hart 40V and Brushed Ryobi 40V, but has the same throw specs as the Brushless Ryobi 40V Powered Snow Shovel.

Weight

The hard plastic auger, brushless motor, and guiding fins are all great features, but there is a cost that comes with it, which is weight. The entire system with a 4.0Ah battery, Powerhead, and the SSA1200 shovel attachment came in at 22.8 pounds on my scale. For comparison, the Ryobi 40V and the Hart 40V Powered Snow Shovel entire systems came in at 17 pounds and 18.4 pounds, respectively. That may not seem like much in terms of barbells, but most of that weight is from the snow shovel itself, which is 12.8 pounds for EGO.

The weight on the snow shovel is actually good for keeping the auger into the snow and getting down to the pavement. But since there are no wheels on this unit, anything the auger doesn’t eat up will cause an abrupt stop, such as sidewalk transitions or cement breaks. Picking up the unit every so often gave me a decent amount of lower back strain, and was quite a workout by the end of the job. You can mitigate some of this by adding EGO’s shoulder strap. If you’re planning on using the SSA1200 as your primary snow-throwing tool, then I’d highly recommend it.

EGO Multi-Head Snow Shovel Attachment Price

If you already have EGO’s Multi-Head system, you can add the snow shovel attachment for $189.00. If you don’t, you can get it as a kit with the powerhead, a 4.0Ah battery, and a charger for $399.00. Both the powerhead and attachment carry a 5-year warranty.

Note: EGO attachments are not compatible with other attachment systems.

The Bottom Line

Based on our tests, the EGO Multi-Head snow shovel attachment did great at knocking out several chores, like cleaning off sidewalks, decks, and patios with ease.

With the power, quality, and features that we come to expect from EGO, the SSA1200 has a sweet spot of utility that fits a need where your broom or blower isn’t enough and a full-size snow blower is overkill. It outperforms its competition, though that performance comes at the cost of additional weight.

If those first snowfalls of the season or a false spring cover your outdoor spaces with a white blanket, you can recover them easily with this attachment.

Ryobi Has A Snow Shovel For Every Application On A Battery System That Helps You All Year

If you live in a climate that gets snow in the winter, you know the “joys” of having to shovel snow manually. With Ryobi’s impressive range of homeowner tools, it’s no surprise that it’s tapped into the winter cleanup market. We’ve covered Ryobi’s 40V Snow Blowers in the past, but you may be looking for something for lighter snow-clearing jobs. That’s where Ryobi cordless snow shovels come in. We’re giving you an overview of each model to help you sort out the options.

Ryobi 40V 12-Inch Wheeled Snow Shovel (RY408130VNM): The High-Performance Specialist

Ryobi Cordless Snow Shovel Ultimate Buyer's Guide

The RY408130VNM Ryobi snow shovel gives you a 12-inch clearing path in snow up to 6 inches deep. It has a throwing distance of 25 feet to tackle areas you don’t want a full-size snow blower for. There’s also a 2-speed trigger that lets you customize the speed based on your clearing needs.

As a compact, lightweight shovel, this 40V Ryobi snow shovel gives you a break from manual shovels and scrapers. It weighs just 16.6 pounds and features a 2-wheel design that reduces fatigue even further and makes maneuverability much easier.

This one retails for $249 as a bare tool. There’s also a kit, including a 4.0Ah battery and charger for $329. Ryobi backs your purchase with a 5-year warranty for the tool and a 3-year warranty for the battery.

Considerations

This is the highest-performing snow shovel in Ryobi’s lineup and the wheels are very helpful in offsetting the tool’s higher weight. With its 4.0Ah battery, you’re going to get longer runtime than 18V options.

High performance always comes at a higher price, and as the flagship of Ryobi’s line, it’s also the most expensive.

  • Model: Ryobi RY408130VNM
  • Clearing Width: 12 in
  • Clearing Depth: 6 inches
  • Max Throw: 25 ft
  • Weight: 16.6 lbs

Ryobi 18V One+ Snow Shovel (P2706BTL): The Lightweight Option

Ryobi Cordless Snow Shovel Ultimate Buyer's Guide

The smallest of the Ryobi cordless snow shovel lineup, the P2706BTL has a 10-inch clearing width. It keeps the same clearing depth of up to 6 inches, however. This shovel is also the lightest in the lineup at 12.3 pounds, making it a good option if strength or back pain is a concern.

Even though this tool isn’t as mighty in terms of size and performance as the rest of the ones on this list, you’re not sacrificing much in the way of snow-throwing distance. It throws snow up to 20 feet away, which is only five feet less than Ryobi’s top models achieve.

This is a more compact solution than Ryobi’s other snow shovel options and the price reflects that. It retails as a bare tool for $139. There’s also a kit option that includes a 4.0Ah battery and charger for $199. You can find both options at The Home Depot starting in November 2022. Ryobi backs your purchase with a 3-year limited warranty.

Considerations

The 18V system is the same one that runs the entire 18V One+ line of power tools, OPE, and lifestyle products. In terms of the number of compatible tools, none of the 40V models come close. It’s also lighter and less expensive than the higher-voltage models.

The big trade-offs are going to be a slightly narrower clearing width, shorter throw distance, and significantly lower runtime thanks to the lower-capacity battery.

  • Model: Ryobi P2706BTL
  • Clearing Width: 10 in
  • Clearing Depth: 6 inches
  • Max Throw: 20 ft
  • Weight: 12.3 lbs

Ryobi 40V HP Brushless 12-Inch Snow Shovel (RY408120VNM): Brushless Attachment-Capable Snow Clearing

Ryobi Cordless Snow Shovel Ultimate Buyer's Guide

The Ryobi RY408120VNM gives you the ability to clear a 12-inch path in snow up to 6 inches deep. Like its bigger brother, it features a brushless motor that throws snow up to 25 feet.

This Ryobi snow shovel has a 2-speed switch, as well as a variable speed trigger. Unlike the wheeled model, it’s compatible with Ryobi’s Expand-It tool attachment system, featuring a 180° lock/unlock coupler that lets you remove the snow shovel head to attach another one of the tool heads in this system.

This shovel clocks in at 17 pounds, and although it’s tied for the heaviest model in Ryobi’s snow shovel lineup, it’s still a lot lighter than a walk-behind snow blower.

As far as pricing goes, you can find it as a kit retailing for $299. It includes a 4.0Ah battery and a charger. As with all Ryobi tools, you can find it exclusively at The Home Depot. Ryobi backs your purchase with a 5-year warranty.

Considerations

This model was Ryobi’s previous flagship until the wheeled design came out. Arguably, it still is with performance that matches its brother in capacity and throw. It also enjoys the longer runtime of a higher-capacity battery and brushless motor.

It’s a little heavier and doesn’t enjoy the easy maneuverability that wheels offer, though it is a little lower in price.

This model’s biggest advantage is its attachment-ready powerhead, making it a useful tool to have year-round.

  • Model: Ryobi RY408120VNM
  • Clearing Width: 12 inches
  • Clearing Depth: 6 inches
  • Max Throw: 25 feet
  • Weight: 17 lbs

Ryobi 40V 12-Inch Power Snow Shovel (RY408110VNM): Brushed Attachment-Capable Option

This snow shovel is very similar to the RY408120VNM model, but this one uses a brushed motor. Taking off that HP Brushless designation, you lose about three feet of maximum throwing distance (up to 22 feet). It has the same clearing path of 12 inches in up to 6 inches deep of snow, though.

It’s also lacking a two-speed switch, making it a little lighter on features as it targets a lower price point. Besides that, this model is almost identical to the HP Brushless shovel. It has the same weight of 17 pounds, and it features a variable speed trigger. It also features Expand-It compatibility with a 180° lock/unlock coupler.

The RY408120VNM 40V 12-inch snow shovel retails as a kit for $269. It includes a 4.0Ah battery and a charger, as well as a 5-year warranty from Ryobi. You can find it at The Home Depot.

Considerations

As we already mentioned, the big difference between this model and the one above it is the switch to a brushed motor. You won’t get as much runtime and the throw is a little shorter, but you save some money and the powerhead is still attachment capable.

  • Model: Ryobi RY408110VNM
  • Clearing Width: 12 inches
  • Clearing Depth: 6 inches
  • Runtime: 15 mins
  • Weight: 17 lbs

Ryobi Expand-It Snow Shovel Attachment

If you already have a Ryobi Expand-It powerhead, you can save some money by simply adding the attachment. It’s the same one as the two options above with a 12-inch clearing width and 6-inch maximum depth. Since the Expand-It system uses a universal connection design, you can also use it with other brands that have the same connection type, whether it’s a battery or gas unit.

Get it for $149.00

Specifications

  • Model: Ryobi RYSNW00
  • Clearing Width: 12 inches
  • Clearing Depth: 6 inches

Clear Snow More Comfortably With EGO’s 21-Inch Auger-Propelled Snow Blower

Way back in 2017, we had the opportunity to review the initial dual-battery EGO 21-inch snow blower. It was good, rating an overall 9.0 on our 10-point scale. However, EGO has continued to develop its battery and motor technology along with how it can apply it to snow blowers.

Editor’s Note: We received an early sample, so the sticker package isn’t on our model. Oh, and we didn’t have any snow in the forecast—just a hurricane. The second one to come through this year, actually. Just pretend that nice green grass and 80° F weather is really snow at 20° F.

EGO 21-Inch Auger-Propelled Snow Blower Performance

Controls and Capacity

The control center and start-up procedure for this snow blower are pretty similar to that of EGO’s cordless mowers. To get started, press and hold the large power button and then pull down on the presence bar to activate the heavy-duty rubber auger.

The auger doubles as the drive to make it a self-propelled machine. Using the lever at the handle’s center, you control the auger’s RPMs, in turn controlling the throw distance and forward speed.

The EGO SNT2125 features a 21-inch wide intake and can comfortably tackle snow up to 13 inches deep in a single pass. EGO tells us that it is capable of throwing that snow as far as 45 feet—not bad for a single-stage system! That’s 10 feet further than the SNT2103 was.

It’s also a Peak Power system. While the machine can operate with just one battery, using two allows it to extend the runtime and use a more efficient power draw. Both ports are active and the electronics take care of switching packs so you don’t have to think about it.

Adjustable Throw

With a simple lever on the right side of the handle, you can direct the throw 200° from the left to right and anywhere in between. This lets you stay at the helm and redirect the snow discharge on the fly with one hand, ultimately saving you time as you switch directions.

You can also adjust the chute’s throw pitch to deal with different conditions (or avoid making your neighbor mad). Like most snow blowers, this adjustment happens at the chute itself rather than at the control deck on the handle.

EGO 21-Inch Auger-Propelled Snow Blower Notes

Creature Comforts

EGO also added a few helpful creature comforts to this snow blower. A pair of bright LED headlights cast about a 5-foot wide beam that can easily illuminate a dark sidewalk or driveway if you’re working in low- or no-light conditions. Turn them on or off with a simple button press on the control deck.

Additionally, there are integrated hand warmers on either side of the grip to keep your hands and fingers nice and toasty while you work. Press the button on the control deck to turn them on.

You can turn both the LED lights and the hand warmers on without engaging the auger.

Additional Features

  • Scraper bar behind the auger
  • Folding handle for easy storage

EGO 21-Inch Auger-Propelled Snow Blower Price

Look for this EGO 21-Inch snow blower in stores this season. Expect to pay $999 for a kit that includes two 7.5Ah batteries and a charger or $599 for the bare tool if you’re already on the EGO 56V platform. It comes with a 5-year limited tool warranty as well as a 3-year battery warranty.

The Bottom Line

If you’re dreading the process of firing up your gas snow blower after it’s been sitting all summer and fall, the EGO 56V 21-inch electric snow blower is a great candidate to kick those pains to the curb. It’s dramatically quieter and lighter than a traditional gas model, plus, you have instant power at the touch of a button. If you live in an area with noise ordinances or just don’t want to wake your sleeping neighbors, this is the one for you.

So you’ve settled on a Greenworks snow blower, or maybe you’ve put them on your shortlist and want to take a closer look at the line. With more than a dozen to choose from, which one should you buy?

Our team of experts did the homework for you. Whether you’re looking for a Greenworks cordless snow blower or a corded electric model, our goal is to help you narrow down the field by offering our top recommendations.

Greenworks Commercial 82V Dual Stage Snow Blower: Best of the Best

The top-of-the-line for Greenworks unsurprisingly comes from the 82V Commercial series. The Dual Stage snow blower (or snow thrower) has a 24-inch clearing width, can handle up to 20 inches of snow depth, can throw up to 50 feet, and has power equivalent to a 253cc gas engine. Thanks to three active battery ports, you can have the runtime onboard to clear more than 3000 square feet.

But that’s not all by a long shot. This is a ZTS, meaning that it’s self-propelled and has a zero turning radius. Plus you get three forward speeds along with a reverse speed. With such a muscular build, it’s really helpful when you’re clearing larger or longer areas and you’re wasting effort turning the machine around.

Keep in mind that as part of the Commercial series, this snow blower is built to handle professional applications. Here are some more details:

  • Brushless motor
  • Independent hub wheel motor with traction control
  • 15 x 5-inch tires
  • Adjustable drift cutters
  • Non-marring skid shoes
  • Top-mounted LED headlights
  • Adjustable chute direction
  • 14-gauge steel intake
  • 12-gauge steel auger
  • Steel shave plate

This isn’t a cheap snow blower and the bare tool runs $1299.99. From there, you can choose the battery and charger loadout you want.

Also Available

Greenworks Commerical 82V 22-Inch Snow Blower

If you’re looking for a single-stage option for professional use, Greenworks Commercial has a 22-inch model that can suit your needs. It clears snow up to 12 1/2 inches deep with the ability to throw it up to 30 feet. It has two active battery ports to extend your runtime and is capable of running on just one battery.

You can pick this one up as a kit with an 8.0Ah battery and charger for $799.99. It’s also available as a bare tool for $505.99.

Worx 40V Snow Blower Ditches Gas-Powered and Corded Hassles

According to Worx, the 40V Power Share Snow Blower is lighter and easier to use than both gas-powered and corded snow blowers on the market. With their battery-powered model, you get plenty of power without the hard start-ups and emissions of gas power or the hassle of keeping up with the extension cord that corded power requires. With the Worx model, clearing snow is as simple as pressing down the lock-off button, pulling back the bail handle, and getting to work.

What’s the Big Deal?

The Worx 40V Snow Blower operates on the Power Share battery platform. The cool thing about this particular platform is that this 40V tool uses the same 20V batteries that power a variety of Worx 20V, 40V, and 80V power tools and outdoor power equipment. In this case, two 20V Power Share batteries combine to provide the snow blower with 40V of power.

Worx has also designed the 40V Snow Blower with a brushless motor that the brand claims runs 50% longer while providing 25% more power than a brushed motor. This single stage snow blower has a no-load speed of 2300 rpm and can launch dry snow up to 20 ft.

This snow blower features a maximum depth capacity of 10 inches. The auger measures 20 inches wide and 10 inches high to churn up and lift snow from its path. The discharge chute rotates up to 180º to give you a lot of directional control over where you’re throwing snow.

After the job is done, you can pick up and store away the 41.9 lb. snow blower easily. It features a built-in carrying handle on the base of the unit while the fully collapsible handle folds over to provide a smaller footprint for storage.

Other Features

  • One-touch snow deflector allows for quick adjustment of throw height and distance
  • 8 inch wheels
  • Dual LED lights provide greater visibility in low-light conditions
  • Sealed battery compartment
  • Onboard charge-level indicator

Pricing

You can find the Worx WG471 40V Power Share Snow Blower either at the Worx website or from Amazon. It retails for $419.99 and includes two 20V 4.0Ah batteries and a 4-amp dual-port charger that can recharge both batteries in two hours. Worx backs their snow blower with a 5-year warranty.

Worx 40V Power Share Snow Blower Specs

  • Model: Worx WG471
  • Voltage: 40V Max (2 x 20V)
  • Capacity: 2 x 4.0Ah batteries

Thumb Your Nose at Old Man Winter with the EGO 2-Stage Snow Blower

We’ve been waiting for some good snow to test out the EGO 56V 2-Stage Snow Blower with Peak Power and Ol’ Jack Frost finally delivered!

Pros

  • Outstanding power comparable to similar-sized gas models
  • 24-inch clearing swath
  • Excellent runtime with kitted 7.5Ah batteries
  • 5 auger speeds
  • 5 chute vertical angle stops
  • 200° chute rotation
  • Lighter than similar-sized gas units with much better balance over the wheels
  • More durable design than other battery-powered snow blowers

Cons

  • Chute drifts during use
  • Price may be too high for some shoppers

EGO 2-Stage Snow Blower Power Source

The EGO SNT2405 2-Stage Snow Blower showcases what cordless can do in snow blowers. The company claims to go after both muscle and durability—all while making the system easy to use.

This marks only the second battery-powered two-stage snow blower ever to hit the market (the first came from Snow Joe back in 2018 and had mixed reviews).

This kit comes with a pair of 56V, 7.5Ah ArcLithium batteries, which power twin brushless motors. One of the motors drives the variable speed steel auger and steel impeller, while the other drives the power to the wheels.

EGO 2-Stage Snow Blower Battery Bay

Using the 7.5Ah (or 10Ah) batteries is key to getting the best experience. There’s quite a bit more power to this unit and using smaller packs might not give you enough juice to finish the job.

EGO 2-Stage Snow Blower Performance

Editor’s Note on 2-Stage vs Single-Stage Snow blowers
Two-stage snow blowers have both an auger that collects the snow and a fan that discharges the snow through a chute. These combined actions tend to throw snow at a faster rate—and thus farther away.

Hi Kevin!

When it comes to power, the SNT2405 can throw snow up to 50 feet away while clearing a 24-inch swath across your driveway. With several power settings, this snow blower can make quick work of what used to be a back-breaking chore to reclaim your driveway from mother nature.

The 24-inch wide steel deck reduces the number of passes you have to make compared to other battery-operated snow blowers. It’s 26 inches at the widest point, but with everything else tucked behind the 24-inch deck.

EGO 2-Stage Snow Blower 24-Inch Swath

Drive System

Every storm is different, so there are many control options to fit your situation. Whether you are clearing heavy, wet snow, just transporting from the shed to the driveway, or something in between, EGO has you covered for drive speed.

The fastest setting is a brisk walking speed, which is likely a bit faster than you would be using while actually snow blowing. The lower speeds are better in terms of control during operation. As with all snow blowers, if you catch a rough concrete joint or sidewalk crack under the snow, you can come to an abrupt halt.

EGO equipped this unit with a reverse gear, which is very nice to get out of some slippery situations. In both forward and reverse, the knobby tires seem to grab anything and just go.

Thar She Blows!

This unit glides effortlessly through soft, powdery snow like it’s not even there. If the snow is wet or frozen, you’ll notice the difference, but nothing seems to stop the auger. This thing even eats through the frozen clumps left from the snowplows, chews it into pieces, and spits it out wherever you want it.

It avoids bogging down in heavy snow better than the similarly sized gas-powered versions we have used. The gas-powered versions have more delay when the throttle is opening up to deal with the extra load, whereas EGO’s brushless motor responds quickly to access its higher torque.

EGO 2-Stage Snow Blower

Comparing it to other battery-powered options, this unit never got clogged with the wet snow that easily brought my Snow Joe 40v single-stage snow blower to a stop. The EGO team is definitely proving it’s possible to fill the power gap without losing the benefits of a lithium-ion energy source.

Now That We’ve Had More Snow…

After a level 2 winter storm, we had about 8 inches of snow to blow as another test. The first 2 inches were compacted ice, and the other 6 inches were wet powder, so more strain than previous tests. This beast of a snowblower still just chewed up the wintery mix and got right down to the pavement!

EGO 2-Stage Snow Blower Runtime

EGO claims that this unit has enough runtime to clear an 18-car driveway’s worth of 8-inch high snow on a single charge. The snow we got wasn’t quite high enough to validate that. However, that seems about right based on our experience.

I was able to clear 6 different 4-car driveways with 4 inches of wet, slushy snow, including the sidewalk in between and the frozen snowplow drifts at the end of each driveway. That amount of work did drain the batteries entirely, but my neighbors and I were happy with clean driveways.

EGO 2-Stage Snow Blower POV

You can hear the motor working harder when hitting wet snow, ice, or frozen drifts and that affects the runtime. To see how much, we did this test again on 4 inches of soft, powdery snow on the same 6 driveways.

With the lighter snow, we kept the auger speed lower to avoid shooting snow into a neighbor’s house or sending it high into the air. The same 6 driveways with powdery snow and low auger speed only used 20-30% of the battery! Obviously, results vary based on the snow conditions, but this test impressed our team, especially when comparing it to other battery-operated units.

With A Heavier Load

It became clear about the auger speed’s impact on battery life during my second test with the extra snow and ice. Eating the 6 inches of wet powder on top can be done in “Eco” mode, which is the lowest setting for the auger, but digging into the bottom layer of ice required a bit more power.

To start, I picked up the snowblower a bit to point the bucket down into the ice and get under it. Once I was under it, then I set the wheels back on the ground and let the drive motor do the work. Working through the extra thickness of the ice, and the higher auger speed, drained the batteries faster, and I was only able to do 4 different 4 car driveways, including the sidewalks and embankments.

My recommendation for conserving battery life is to keep the auger speed as low as possible, and only turn it up if hitting heavy stuff or you see that snow is getting pushed around it rather than into the bucket and out the chute.

Not So Long Walk Home

Once the batteries were dead, my trek back to the shed wasn’t too bad on the level sidewalk. However, without the drive wheels assisting the climb, going up a mild hill was quite a chore.

Even so, it’s easier than what you would expect from a gas-powered version since they are heavier than this unit. On the other hand, if the gas-powered version runs out, you can go grab a gas can and refill on the fly. Of course, the same goes for grabbing another battery if you have other EGO 56V products to pull from.

Storing the EGO 2-Stage Snow Blower

The control handle has four hand knobs to remove it, and the chute is removable as well, which reduces the disassembled height. These features allow it to fit somewhat compactly for those that don’t have much space for storage, although it does not compact down as much or as easily as the smaller SNT2114.

Outside of the torque advantages, the battery-operated units have a distinct benefit over comparable gas-powered versions in terms of serviceability. Basically, there isn’t much! Despite working on small engines for many years, I have been switching over to battery-powered everything because I got tired of winterizing, un-winterizing, cleaning, and tuning small engines, not to mention pulling a starter cord till my back hurt. This unit was a welcome addition to replace another gas-powered outdoor tool in my shed.

EGO 2-Stage Snow Blower Build and Weight

EGO ramped up the durability of this snow blower. It features a 21″ tall steel box with retractable drift cutters (sold separately). EGO also tells us that everything that isn’t steel is made from ballistic grade polymer to extend its service life. It even features beefy 15″ x 5″ wheels and a limited-slip differential to keep you firmly planted on the job at hand.

Rear Wheel

Even though the build is clearly an upgrade, it’s not overly heavy. At 150 pounds, it’s still lighter than similar gas-powered versions.

As long as we’re on the subject, a big difference is that the balance of this unit is remarkable compared to gas models. It takes very little force to lift up the front end and maintain lift when you’re blowing over soft ground or taking it back to the shed.

Obsessive Control

EGO knows that even the burliest snow blowers need to appeal to the user, so they’ve tightened up the controls to make it more comfortable to operate. With the EGO 2-Stage Snow Blower, you can use one hand to keep the blower in motion while the other controls the aim of the chute. Once you kick in the power sequence to spin up the auger, the same hand that engages the drive handle also holds the auger handle in the active position, freeing up your other hand for chute control.

Control Deck

With a 50-foot throw distance, you need to be aware of your surroundings. If your neighbors live close, then you might be able to throw your snow on their driveway! 5 auger speed settings, 5 chute nozzle stops, and 200° chute direction allow you to throw the snow right where you want it, so it’s not really an issue once you get over the sheer joy of shooting snow that far for fun.

Aw, Chute

The chute rotation was the only area we felt needed some improvement. When blowing heavy, wet snow, there is more vibration in the unit overall. Although you don’t feel it much in the handles, it does knock the chute around. When you’re going downhill and hitting heavy snow, the chute will slowly swivel from one side to the center.

EGO 2-Stage Snow Blower Chute

This can be problematic if you end up throwing snow where you don’t want it. The chute design is free-floating with 1 anchor point, is solely controlled by the chute lever, and has no positive detents.

We also found the chute to jostle toward the center when hitting a sidewalk crack or concrete joint, but this is true on just about every snow blower I’ve used, depending on how hard you hit it.

While we haven’t received one yet, we have seen reports of EGO offering a component fix through their warranty service.

Additional Features

  • Handle adjust to 3 heights
  • Selectable front LED levels
  • Onboard cleanout tool

EGO 2-Stage Snow Blower Price and Warranty

Lowe’s and other EGO retailers have the 2-stage snow blower for $799 as a bare tool and as a kit with two 7.5Ah batteries and a dual-port charger for $1299. EGO backs it with a 5-year limited warranty.

The Bottom Line

The EGO 2-Stage Snow Blower raises the bar for what you should expect from a battery-powered snow blower. If you’ve been waiting for a gas replacement, it has the power to make that transition.

Combined with their outstanding line of compatible lawn care equipment that now includes a legitimate zero turn mower, EGO can take you from spring to winter without ever filling a gas tank.

Ryobi Launches 40V Snow Blower Lineup for Fall 2021

The current Ryobi 40V Cordless Snow Blower lineup includes four products from two-stage snowblowers to a compact 18-inch model—and everything in between. Powered by the 40V HP battery platform, these Ryobi OPE snowblowers look like they have the muscle required to effectively dispense snow buildup around both small and large properties.

Ryobi 40V Brushless 24″ Two-Stage Snow Blower

The top of the Ryobi 40V Cordless Snow Blower line looks ready to tackle the most serious snow-blowing applications. It features dual brushless motors and four active battery bays to increase both runtime and power. This is the first snowblower we’ve seen with that many battery ports. It speaks to the potential for extended runtime when clearing larger properties and areas.

This two-stage snow blower features an all-metal variable speed auger to clear a path 24″ wide and up to 21″ deep. A metal 180º directional chute lets you throw snow up to 55′ away. Heated hand grips keep your hands warm in icy conditions, while the electric push-button start means that you won’t have to spend time and energy trying to get up and running.

Ryobi 40V HP Cordless 21″ Whisper Series Snow Blower

If the Ryobi RY408100VNM is anything like the Ryobi Whisper Series blower, this snow blower should offer performance with significantly less noise.

It features a brushless motor that powers the snow blower through piles 21″ wide and up to 13″ deep. This snow blower can throw your snow up to 35′ away and in any direction within the 180º arc. It features two active battery ports and a variable-speed rubber-covered metal auger. Plus, when the job is done, you can fold the aluminum handles over to save space in the garage.

Ryobi 40V HP Cordless 21″ Snow Blower

It looks like the Ryobi 40V HP 21″ Snow Blower mirrors some of the features of the Whisper Series model. It may, however, forgo whatever baffling or noise reduction measures the Ryobi RY408100VNM employs to keep the decibel levels down.

With its brushless motor, it has the same dimensions, auger, and throwing capabilities as the Whisper Series model. It also features the fold-over aluminum handles, though this handle telescopes as well. The Ryobi RY40862VNM also makes departures with a larger 1.4-watt LED headlight and different handle mechanisms for drive and control. Also, while this model still features the two active battery ports, it comes kitted with smaller 5.0Ah batteries and the standard charger.

Ryobi 40V HP Cordless 18″ Snow Blower

The smallest of the Ryobi 40V HP Brushless Snow Blower line, the RY40890VNM seems ideal for homeowners with smaller properties to clear.

It features a brushless motor that’s powered by a single 40V battery, and it can clear an 18-inch-wide path up to 10-inches deep. You also get a 180º directional chute that, with the help of the rubber and metal auger, can launch snow up to 25-feet away. It also features an LED light for better visibility and fold-over handles for space-saving storage.

Toro Flex-Force 60V Snow Blower Stands Up To Winter

Two new Toro 60V Power Max Snow Blower models borrow much from the existing two-stage gas model. The company is hoping consumers start planning ahead for those blustery winter months by grabbing a powerful and convenient battery-powered solution for clearing walkways, driveways, and patios. At first glance, both the Toro e24 snowblower and the Toro e26 snowblower look like compelling two-stage models for those looking to ditch gas.

Toro on the Power Max Snow Blower

A two-stage battery-powered snow blower that could deliver just as much power as a gas model, was once a pipe dream — then we developed the 60V Power Max two-stage snow blower. This unit is identical to Toro’s gas two-stage model in every way, except it packs its powerful punch with our Flex-Force Power System, the most powerful battery in its class.

Tom Werner, senior marketing manager at Toro

Two-Stage Tough and Ready to Deliver

Two 60V models sit in the Power Max mold, the Toro e24 snowblower and the Toro e26 snowblower. Toro tells us that these are the only battery-powered snow blowers that offer three battery ports. Why is this a big deal? Toro claims that two 7.5Ah 60V Flex-Force batteries can clear 30 parking spaces on a charge. This is solid, but as you might expect, adding a third battery gets you another 15 parking spots of runtime in up to ten inches of snow.

The Toro e24 Power Max snowblower as well as the e26 were essentially built as carbon copies of the Toro gas model. These two-stage snow blowers showcase heavy-duty steel construction. The QuickStick chute control puts snow exactly where you want it, while handwarmers let you work in relative comfort.

Neither the e24 or e26 snow blowers require shear pins. They both feature a hardened gear and auger for years of durable snow pile domination. They can throw even heavy piles of snow up to 45 feet away. Additionally, Toro has engineered the 60V Power Max Snow Blower with an anti-clogging system.

Availability

Expect the Toro 60V Power Max Two-Stage Snow Blowers to start showing up in stores around the beginning of September. The e24 and e26 should both be available from your local Toro dealer as well as online. Home Depot is also a really viable option for many Toro products.

It looks like the e24 and e26 models will be available as a kit or a bare tool. As a kit, the e24 (24″) comes with two 6.0Ah batteries and two chargers (yeah, that seems kind of strange), and it should retail for $1,499.99. The e26 model comes with two 7.5Ah batteries and two chargers. It retails for $1,699.99. Toro warranties both Flex-Force Power Max Snow Blowers and their batteries for 3 years.
