Skip Conventional Thermal Imaging Devices For Klein’s Mobile-Compatible Thermal Imagers

Nowadays you would be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t have a smartphone. With that being said, it makes sense for many of us to incorporate the technology we use every day into our work. Klein is making this possible with the device-compatible thermal imager, which can be used with both iOS and Android devices. We took a closer look to see what makes the Klein thermal imager for phones useful for electricians and other tradesmen.

Klein Thermal Imager For Phones: The Big Deal

Klein thermal imager

Similar to the FLIR One Pro LT, the imager has a thermal sensor on the unit and connects to the charging port on your phone. The big thing to get used to is the camera position on the bottom of your phone instead of the top.

The imager delivers a total of 10,800 pixels. Klein doesn’t mention the exact sensor size, but that resolution matches up with 90 x 120 pixels at a 3:4 ratio. Regardless, that resolution is high enough to easily detect and troubleshoot hot or cold spots. It’s useful for diagnosis behind paneling, in wiring, and a number of other applications.

The Klein thermal imager for phones picks up temperatures from -4° to 752° Fahrenheit (-20° to 400° Celsius). You also have three different color palette display options. You can view images in rainbow, ironbow, or greyscale. Additionally, screen indicators help you differentiate between high and low temperatures and differential temperature readout.

Along with capturing thermal images, you can use the Kein’s imager app on your device to store and share video, including time-lapse video. The app and the thermal imager itself are compatible with iOS 11 or higher and Android 6.0 or higher. Just keep in mind that there are two model numbers. iPhone users need the Klein TI222 and Android users need the TI220

Devices dependent on a phone or other gadget are limited life products and for something like this really make no sense. Why buy something with a finite life which is what happens when the manufacturer stops keeping the software up to date. Software takes a financial commitment that most companies whose primary business is not software may be very reluctant to continue to fund. Why support a 3 year old scanner when you are selling a new one and the old one requires code base modifications in order to work with the updated development software.
