Metabo HPT Launches Its First Cordless Random Orbital Sander
Metabo HPT is no stranger to the woodworking sector, making excellent miter saws among other things. However, they’ve been lagging behind when it comes to cordless sanders. That’s beginning to change with the Metabo HPT 18V cordless 5-inch random orbital sander.
Metabo HPT Cordless 5-Inch Orbital Sander: The Big Deal
In the past, Metabo HPT has had several models of orbital sander, but this one stands as Metabo HPT’s first cordless dedicated sander to date (technically, an oscillating multi-tool is a sander and Metabo HPT has had cordless models for a while). As a result, it’s the first brushless model in Metabo HPT’s sander lineup and is suitable for sanding tasks on both metal and wood. Perhaps more importantly, Metabo HPT tells us this model leads its class in performance and dust collection.
It achieves no-load speeds from 7,000 OPM to 11,000 OPM with an orbit diameter of 3 mm. A variable speed dial lets you control the speed with settings from 1 to 6.
The sandpaper attachment system has a hook-and-loop design (or more commonly, Velcro). To attach a piece of sandpaper, simply align the holes in the sandpaper with the holes on the hook-and-loop pad and press firmly.
Metabo HPT went for a lightweight and compact design with this sander. As a bare tool (including the dust bag) it weighs just 2.6 pounds. It’s also compact enough for one-handed use.
