Milwaukee M12 Fuel High-Speed Extended Reach Ratchets: The Big Deal

These ratchets come in both 3/8-inch and 1/4-inch models. Both versions feature 35 ft-lbs of max torque. This matches the torque output of the M12 Fuel High-Speed ratchets but drops 20 ft-lbs off the capabilities of the standard extended ratchets. Additionally, they achieve speeds of up to 450 RPM. That’s ~200 RPM faster than the DeWalt Xtreme 12V extended ratchet and the Ryobi 18V extended ratchet. The Makita XRW01 ratchet still holds the top spot in speed with a crazy 800 RPM.

The advantage of these newer models really seems to be their slim, compact profiles coupled with high speed. Their extended neck design provides 20% more reach than competitive ratchets, according to Milwaukee. Additionally, that compact head profile and recessed forward-reverse shift knob allow for an access area of just 0.76 inches!

To ensure comfort and usability in any position, Milwaukee designed these ratchets with a variable-speed long-reach paddle trigger.

It’s hard to leave tools behind that we know to perform well—even when they provide some disadvantages like being tethered by a pneumatic hose. Greenworks 24V Cordless Inflator Fills Up To 160 PSI

One of the joys of a well-developed cordless platform is what you can run with the batteries that aren’t typical power tools, such as inflators. We got our hands on the Greenworks 24V cordless inflator as an example of what they’re doing to expand into lifestyle products.

The Greenworks 24V cordless inflator gives you both flexibility and functionality. It has an operating range of 0-160 PSI and can top off your tires from 28 to 35 PSI in under 2 minutes.

This inflator is pretty straightforward when it comes to the controls. Start by hitting the power button and from there you press the + or – button to set your desired pressure on the backlit LCD display. Once you’re set, just hit the “play” button to start inflating.

A great example of this inflator’s excellent functionality is the auto-fill shut-off function. With it, you set your desired PSI without fear of over-inflation. Once the inflator reaches the target pressure, it shuts itself down.

Realistically, most of us will never need to inflate anything to 160 PSI. Most passenger vehicle tires are in the 40s, mountain bike tires can handle 50 PSI, larger trucks might need 100 PSI, and road bike tires can be 120 PSI. If you happen to have something that requires more pressure, it’s nice to know Greenworks can get you there. Plus, there’s the confidence in knowing it’s built well enough to handle those high pressures.

Low-Pressure Filling

There’s also a mode selection button that lets you alternate between the high and low-pressure functions. On the front side, you have a detachable low-pressure hose connection. You can use this for anything from filling air mattresses, pool inflatables, inner tubes, and much more.

By inserting the hose onto the intake on the side, you can also use this mode as a fast deflator.

The big difference between this and the high-pressure hose is you don’t have PSI readings or targets. You need to monitor the filling and shut the inflator off when it’s complete.

Dual Power Sources

Roadside emergencies happen and so do dead batteries. Fortunately, you can use any Greenworks 24V battery or plug the inflator into your vehicle’s 12V outlet for power. The 9-foot cord stores in the base.

Size and Weight

As far as inflators go, this one is mid-sized. It weighs 4.9 pounds with a 2.0Ah battery and it doesn’t take up too much room at 8.5 inches tall and 9.5 inches wide. It’s a great option to keep in your trunk or toolbox for emergencies and has a comfortable flexible handle for carrying.

Hoses and Accessories

Greenworks did a great job of hose and accessory management on this inflator. They utilize a side wrap system that houses the accessories and neatly stows the high-pressure hose. The detachable low-pressure hose wraps around the base of the inflator body when not in use.

Another bonus is they included a brass Presta adapter rather than a cheap plastic version. Greenworks also includes a pinch valve adapter and sports ball needle.

LED Light

Next to the accessories, there’s an onboard LED light. It’s very helpful when you’re inflating in after dark. To use it, press the light button on the left side of the control panel. It’s not super-bright like you’d want from a flashlight. Rather, it’s designed to light up the close-range work you’re doing.

Note that you need to turn the inflator’s power on to use the LED light.

2-Speed Motor

The lower speed is best for applying the buffing product while the high speed is for buffing it away.

Application Bonnets

Using The Mac Tools 4V Cordless Screwdriver

The controls are about as easy as they come. A simple thumb-activated forward and reverse button sits right on top of the tool, controlling its constant 300 RPM speed. One subtle touch you might miss is the forward arrow sticks up and the reverse is recessed. It’s a little thing that helps you focus on the fastener without having to look at the switch each time you press it.

The Mac Tools SBD4V has a low-torque motor that produces 8 inch-pounds of torque (0.9 Nm), so it doesn’t have the torque you might find in something like a drywall screwdriver. Once you reach the screwdriver’s torque limit, you can still operate it manually in forward or reverse.

Pro Tip: Stick with fasteners smaller than #8 diameter and less than 2 inches, or use a pre-drilled hole if you’re working with longer screws.

This one is perfect for working with delicate materials such as molded plastic. Around our shop, it’s incredibly useful for removing/installing vehicle panels, hose clamps, installing switch plates, and assembling tools with plastic parts.

Standout Features of the Mac Tools 4V Cordless Screwdriver

A couple of things stand out from most of the cordless screwdrivers we’ve used in the past.

First is the ergonomics of the design. To make room for a battery, many designs bulk up the handle and aren’t very comfortable for small and medium-size hands. Mac Tools’ design is much slimmer, though it is still a little thicker than a standard screwdriver.

There’s some give-and-take on the handle overmold. On one hand, its smooth design is very comfortable. On the other, it can get slick if your hands are sweaty or greasy.

The second thing is an IP54 rating. In addition to the water and dust resistance we normally think of with IP ratings, this screwdriver is also able to resist some of the common solvents you come across.

Milwaukee M18 FUEL 15mm and 21mm Random Orbital Polishers Offer Power, Runtime, and Ergonomics for Professional Detailers

Milwaukee Tool now has two full-size M18 FUEL random orbital polishers in 15mm and 21mm configurations sufficient for both polishing and heavy-correction applications. They consider both polishers a true replacement for corded tools. The M18 FUEL 15mm and 21mm random orbital polishers clearly focus on both power and ergonomics—two characteristics critical for automotive detailers.

Ergonomics really plays a huge role with these tools since detailers can spend hours per day holding a polisher. The Milwaukee M18 FUEL 15mm and 21mm random orbital polishers look well-balanced and have a nicely-designed front and rear grip. Milwaukee Tool also claims low vibration and noise.

The backing plate on each tool is designed to stay cool—even with all-day, heavy-duty use. This helps minimize the risk of surface or paint damage due to heat buildup. Milwaukee also turned the battery 90-degrees, giving the tools 2-inches of clearance between it and the work surface. That’s going to help keep you from inadvertently bumping the battery into the vehicle while you polish. It’s great when you can ditch the cord—but no one wants to substitute one problem for another.

Ryobi Introduces the World’s First 18V Cordless Right Andle Die Grinder

The Ryobi 18V One+ HP Compact Brushless 1/4-Inch Right Angle Die Grinder (PSBDG01) promises a convenient cordless alternative to its pneumatic counterpart. Considering it’s the world’s first 18V cordless right angle model, we wanted to know if it’s time to ditch the air hose and compressor.

Need for Speed

Ryobi HP Brushless motor tops out at 22,000 RPM which is nothing to bat an eye at. In fact, that’s a little higher than many pneumatic models. There are a few high-end professional-grade die grinders that top out a few thousand RPMs higher, but this one should perform well in most situations.

The 4-mode speed control lets you dial in the exact level of speed you need for the job—anywhere from 10,000 to 22,000 RPMs. The trigger is variable speed, so you have some additional control in each mode.

At these speeds, you can confidently tackle polishing and sanding projects or even sharpen your dull mower blades without breaking out the compressor. As an added bonus, it’s also quieter than the pneumatic models we’ve used.

Ryobi Cordless Right Angle Die Grinder Design Notes

Size and Weight

The profile of this cordless die grinder is a bit larger than its pneumatic counterparts, but it’s not outrageously bulky considering it’s a cordless tool.

Bare, it stands 7.69 inches tall and 9.75 inches tall with a 4.0Ah battery. That’s really not bad considering you don’t have to worry about an air hose dragging behind the tool.

They also managed to keep the weight to a minimum. At just 3.25 lbs. with a 4.0Ah battery, it’s incredibly maneuverable and easy to handle. It’s even better if you make the switch to a more compact 2.0Ah battery.

Profile

The right-angle design accommodates the Ryobi stick pack battery design in a similar fashion to their drills and impact drivers. The head tilts up at a slight angle to accommodate the protruding battery. When the head is parallel to the ground, the entire collet extends beyond the battery and we didn’t have any issues with clearance.

Trigger Design

The paddle-style trigger traces its roots to traditional pneumatic die grinders, including the spring-loaded finger safety. It adds a little extra measure of safety as well as a degree of familiarity if you’re coming over from the pneumatic world.
