General Equipment BittyBreaker Reduces Cost And Footprint

Breaking is a tough, loud, dirty job that’s uncomfortable for both the operator and bystanders. But what if you could get some of those jobs done with a lighter, quieter tool? The General Equipment BittyBreaker is one option worth considering.

General Equipment BittyBreaker Manual Impact Breaker: The Big Deal

General Equipment BittyBreaker

When we think about breaking concrete, we have several tools in our arsenal we turn to. They’re all power tools, and they’re all bulky and relatively heavy. The General Equipment BittyBreaker moves in the opposite direction. It’s a manual tool that one person can easily carry and wield.

Despite its small size compared to standard breakers, it packs an impressive 1450 ft-lbs of blow force using a solid steel piston and barrel. To put that in context, the Hilti TE 3000 heavy-duty electric jackhammer produces 62.7 ft-lbs. The difference is that the rate of those impacts is much faster with a power tool than the BittyBreaker’s manual operation. Once you get used to it, it’s possible to have a work rate of 10 – 20 blows per minute, though.

With the tool weighing 21 pounds, it’s about 1/3 the weight of the TE 3000.

Here’s the other piece of the puzzle: you don’t want to use the General Equipment BittyBreaker to take out an entire foundation. It’s far too slow for that scope of work. But breaking up a channel you cut for plumbing in your shop floor? That and other small jobs are what this tool is designed for.

Additional Highlights

  • Accepts 1.125 x 6-inch jackhammer bits (not included)

General Equipment BittyBreaker Manual Impact Breaker Price

We’ve seen pricing for this tool range from around $199 to $299 depending on where you buy it. At the time we’re writing, Lewis Contractors Supply has it on Amazon for $262.55 with $52.62 shipping. Tools4Flooring has it for $199 with free shipping.

Note that we’ve never shopped at Tools4Flooring, so we can’t vouch for them, but they had the best price we could find.

Final Thoughts

Laser Distance Measurers are great tools for any professional who is estimating distances or working out how much material they might need. They’re quick and relatively easy to use, the range of distance exceeds the capability of the tape measure, and you don’t need a second person to help grab a measurement.  When you can get the accuracy to within the +/- 1/16″ range, the LDM is a great tool for most measurements.

The problem with laser distance measurers—even ones from DeWalt—is that they can be thrown off by the color or material of the surface. They also need an actual surface to bounce a laser off of.  It also can’t grab hold of the end of a board, so “pull” measurements won’t work. Professionals use these tools for their primary strength: estimating. If you need to measure actual material, you likely still need a standard tape measure when accuracy is critical.

All that said, the DeWalt Laser Distance Measure seems helpful for many applications, especially the 100-foot model.  Bluetooth connectivity and online measurement storage seem like a great way to stay organized, and the Tool Connect App has some other neat features, such as battery readings and tool location.

These LDMs are priced pretty well for what they do. In the case of the 100-foot model, you might get better range for the $100 price point, but you don’t see a whole lot of other LDMs with Bluetooth connectivity at that price. For the 40-foot model, the short range and +/- 1/4″ accuracy probably limit it to DIY applications, though for under $30, the professional might find it useful in some capacity.

Reduce Waste And Save Time With The Hilti Nuron Cordless Adhesive Dispenser

Inefficient consumable use can be a big contributing factor to unnecessary overhead costs and wasted time, especially in the realm of construction. The Hilti Nuron 22V Cordless Adhesive Dispenser houses some interesting tech that helps ease that pain point and we’re taking a closer look at how Nuron is changing this tool.

Using The Hilti 22V Nuron Cordless Adhesive Dispenser

Hilti’s Cordless Adhesive Dispenser promises to save time, help prevent waste, and reduce clean-up time when setting anchors into concrete. One major way it accomplishes that is with the combination of a milliliter-accurate dosage dial and the Hilti Volume Calculator App to help you know exactly which setting to use.

Hilti Volume Calculator App

Once you determine the correct setting, simply twist the dial to match and pull the trigger. The tool delivers your adhesive and then backs off to relieve pressure and avoid spillover.

Hilti Nuron 22V Cordless Adhesive Dispenser HDE 500-22

An LED indicator gives real-time feedback to confirm whether the adhesive dispenses correctly or if your cartridge is almost empty.

When it’s time to swap in a new cartridge, there’s a plunge release button at the back that’s easy to hit with your thumb.

One of the biggest benefits of this cordless adhesive dispenser is that it takes the strain off your hands. Whether it’s a thicker adhesive or you’re setting anchors in 100 holes, manual dispensers take a toll on your hands. Employing Hilti’s cordless advantage reduces the fatigue you have to deal with.

Hilti Nuron Cordless Adhesive Dispenser Design Notes

Ergonomics

From tip to tail, the Hilti Nuron cordless adhesive dispenser measures 17 5/8 inches and stands 10 1/2 inches tall. Designed to apply two-part adhesives, it’s significantly wider than your standard caulk gun, measuring right at 4 1/2 inches.

The grip is a bit on the larger side with a smooth texture and feels comfortable and secure in my medium-size hands. Sweat or grease/oil can introduce some slipping, but a good pair of work gloves will take care of that.

Hilti Nuron Cordless Adhesive Dispenser

Weight enters at 4.3 pounds bare and 5.5 pounds with a B 22-55 battery. That might seem heavy, and it is compared to a standard dispenser. However, in addition to the battery, motor, and electronics, it’s also a well-built machine. Take the plungers for instance. Not only are they full metal, but they’re also beefy and clearly designed to withstand the demands of applying adhesives over long days on commercial jobsites.

Plunger arms

What’s New?

There are several upgrades compared to the previous cordless dispenser and we’re going to key on three specific ones.

First of all, it has Nuron technology built-in. It gives you the ability to track tool maintenance schedules, inventory, location, consumables usage, and much more. Read more about Nuron’s advantages here.

There are a couple of new smart settings on the dial. Should you run out of adhesive mid-cycle, replace the cartridge, run a discard cycle, then turn the dial back to your previous setting and double-tap the trigger. The smart memory will automatically dispense whatever is remaining from the last application.

There’s a repeat function to use with the continuous flow mode. It also works with measured modes but is a little redundant with those. To make it work, turn the dial to continuous mode and fill the hole to the level you’re targeting. If you got the correct amount, flip the dial to repeat mode and it will dispense the same amount on each trigger pull after that.

Hilti Nuron 22V Cordless Adhesive Dispenser Price

This Hilti Cordless Adhesive Dispenser retails for $250 as a bare tool and $457 as a preconfigured kit which includes two B 22-55 Nuron batteries and a single-port charger. If you’re taking advantage of Hilti’s Fleet Management pricing, it’s $8.50 per month for the bare tool and $16 per month for the kit.

Hilti backs the dispenser with its impressive 20-year warranty as well as a 2-year free service agreement and 1-day turnaround on service and repairs.

The Bottom Line

Hilti made a couple of helpful upgrades as it shifted the Cordless Adhesive Dispenser from the 22V platform over to Nuron. In addition to Nuron’s platform-wide advantages, new smart modes make the tool more efficient both in its use of adhesive and your time. Despite an internally complex design, Hilti has made the HDE 500-22 very easy to use and nearly any member of your crew can be up to speed in a matter of minutes.

It is no exaggeration to say that Tapcons and other concrete screws have changed the world. The first art gallery I worked in had brick walls and it was my job to hang the exhibits every month or two. It was such a huge pain drilling holes and installing anchors. I would have killed for Tapcons back then. Plastic anchors also didn’t help with the look of the museum walls after we removed the exhibit. Now we not only have concrete screws, but we also get to use a concrete screw installation kit to easily install them.

Using a concrete screw installation kit like the ones pictured below, you save a lot of time switching between drilling and fastening.

Pro-tip: Buy two installation kits. Install the bit for the large Tapcons (1/4-inch screws) in one hammer drill and the small Tapcons (3/16-inch screws) in the other. Leave the bulky cases at home. All you need are these two cylinders and two extra tips for the ends. This also saves you from having to swap the bits back and forth. Several companies make these concrete screw installation kits and you can get them for use with rotary hammers, hammer drills, and impact drivers.

Using a Concrete Screw Installation Kit

To use a concrete screw installation kit or tool, chuck the tool in your hammer drill, then set it to hammer mode and high-speed drilling. Remove the outer sleeve which exposes the bit. Drill your hole, making sure you are using the correct size bit for the screws you are using. Next, slip the sleeve over the installation tool and use it as a driver to drive your screw. No need to remove the drill bit. This is what makes the system so fast to use. The end of the sleeve fits the smallest hex head screws and it comes with two additional bits, a number three Philips and a larger driver. I store one bit on one sleeve and one on the other making it easy to carry in a toolbox. It is a fantastic system.

Bosch concrete screw installation kit

If you use a rotary hammer, you will need a different set of drill bits since the shanks of them use SDS Plus bits. Fortunately, Bosch makes a universal kit that includes both the bits and the installation tool for hammer drills and rotary hammers along with the sleeve and drivers. As I mentioned above, I recommend you buy two kits.

Final Thoughts

While not inexpensive, these kits can really save you time (i.e. money) if you tend to do a lot of Tapcon or concrete screw anchoring. Look for pricing between $20 and $50 depending upon which set you buy.

DeWalt 20V Max Cordless Universal Dust Extractor Kit Cracks Down On Jobsite Airborn Hazards

The dangers of silica dust are no secret in the construction industry. OSHA has taken great measures to warn of the risk associated with loose concrete dust and its effects years down the road. This DeWalt cordless universal dust extraction kit and tube kit aim to increase workplace safety by reducing dust inhalation hazards.

DeWalt DWH161 Cordless Universal Dust Extractor

To get an idea of the performance and convenience of this vacuum system, we paired the DWH161D1 with the DWH200D dust extractor tube kit as we tested DeWalt’s 12V brushless rotary hammer.

Right away, we enjoyed the lightweight and wearable design along with its 20V Max battery power supply. These factors make it more convenient than lugging around a full-sized extractor or shop vac, especially for small jobs or working at height.

Multiple shoulder sling connection points allow you to position the dust extractor wherever is most comfortable with the strap that comes in the box.

The collection box houses a HEPA filter and has 45% more capacity than the tool-mounted DeWalt DWH302DH for a total of 210 cubic centimeters of volume.

DeWalt 20V Max Cordless Universal Dust Extractor Kit

Aside from its size and compact design, the feature we like the most is DeWalt’s wireless tool control capability. If the tool you’re using isn’t already wireless-ready, you can grab DeWalt’s key fob-style remote to easily turn the vac on or off. The tool’s brushless motor already extends the runtime significantly, and wireless activation keeps the vac from running when you don’t need it on.

We spent our time drilling test holes in concrete for our rotary hammers, and the cordless extractor quickly cleared away the loose dust leaving little to nothing left behind. Meanwhile, its onboard HEPA filter pulled out the impurities and expelled nothing but clean air.

DeWalt 20V Max Cordless Universal Dust Extractor Kit

You can use the extractor with a wide range of tools and applications, not just rotary hammers. In fact, it reduces dust when drilling, chipping, using a percussion hammer drill, making drywall cutouts, and sanding. If the tool you’re using has a 1 1/4-inch vac port (or you use an adapter), it’ll work.

DeWalt Cordless Universal Dust Extractor Price

You can snag this 20V cordless dust extractor for $199 as a bare tool or as a kit with a 2.0Ah battery and charger for $249 online at Acme Tools. Additionally, both options carry a 3-year limited warranty, 2-year free service contract, and a 90-day money-back guarantee.

Specifications

  • Model: DWH161D1
  • Power Source: DeWalt 20V battery
  • OSHA Table 1 Compliant
  • Wireless Tool Control Enabled
  • Weight: 4.06 lbs (bare), 4.87 lbs (with 2Ah battery)
  • Noise Level: 67 dB
  • Warranty: 3 years
  • Price: $199 (bare tool), $249 (with 2Ah battery)

DeWalt Dust Extraction Tube Kit DWH200D

The DWH200D dust extraction tube kit is an OSHA-compliant solution for both SDS plus rotary hammers and hammers drills. The system allows you to safely contain concrete dust. Heavier, non-airborne particles simply fall into the tube and lighter dust gets sucked up by your vac.

Even without a vac, the dust stays in containment until you move the tube away. Vacless operation is best when you’re drilling straight down. Drilling into walls or overhead makes it tough to keep at least some dust from floating away.

The three accordion-style clear tubes in the set work with bits up to 10 inches. Just match the tube to the length of the bit you’re using.

This kit is pretty user-friendly but there’s a little break-in period for the tubes before they get easier to switch. Once you have a good fit, just tighten the handle by rotating it clockwise as you would with other fore-grips.

What’s In The Box?

  • Adjustable Side-Handle
  • Depth Rod
  • Stop Bit Tube
  • Standard 6-Inch Tube
  • Extended 10-Inch Tube
  • Two Adapter Spacing Rings

DeWalt Dust Extraciton Tube Kit Price

The DeWalt SDS Plus Dust kit prices out at $91.99 and includes a variety of fittings and accessories that make it compatible with most of DeWalt’s hammer drills and rotary hammers.

Specifications

  • Model: DWH200D
  • Warranty: 3 years
  • Price: $91.99

The Bottom Line

DeWalt’s universal dust extraction kit is an excellent solution when the situation calls for a more compact collection system. Designing it with a brushless motor gets more out of your battery and giving you an option to carry it off of the tool puts the weight somewhere else. You trade-off capacity compared to larger vacs, but the convenience in confined spaces, overhead drilling, and working at height makes it totally worth it.

DeWalt DCH416 60V Max FlexVolt Rotary Hammer Opens Up 1 1/4-Inch Class

DeWalt is expanding its FlexVolt rotary hammer portfolio with the DeWalt DCH416, a 1 1/4-inch SDS-Plus model. As the least powerful of the 60V Max line, why is it worth your consideration? We got our hands on one to find out.

For your reading consideration: Rotary Hammer Vs Hammer Drill

DeWalt DCH416 SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer Performance

Power And Class

Interestingly, this is the only 1 1/4-inch rotary hammer in DeWalt’s portfolio, even among its corded units. There are plenty of 1 1/8-inch models on the 20V Max platform and several FlexVolt ones that extend the range up to 2 inches.

DeWalt DCH416 60V Max FlexVolt 1 1/4-Inch SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer

As the least powerful of the 60V Max platform, this DeWalt FlexVolt SDS-Plus rotary hammer cranks out a maximum 4.5 Joules of impact energy, or 3.3 ft-lbs if that’s the measurement you prefer. With its variable speed trigger, it can produce between 0-725 RPM and 0-4200 BPM.

As you likely guessed from the name, this rotary hammer handles up to a 1 1/4-inch SDS-Plus bit. Its best performance is with 5/8-inch to 1 1/8-inch bits.

In terms of performance, it has some competition from other cordless 1 1/8-inch models from other brands that top it in both impact energy and speed. It’s also a little lower in impact energy and speed than corded 1 1/4-inch models from other brands.

Anti-Kickback Protection

The tool features an E-clutch to protect you from sudden bit bind-ups. Rather than wrenching your arm out of its socket, the clutch kicks in and slips the gear as an anti-kickback mechanism. It’s a feature you’ll really appreciate when you encounter the need for it and one that we prefer on rotary hammers.

E-Clutch indicator

Vibration Control

As with many other high-power rotary hammers, the FlexVolt DCH416 has vibration dampening technology built into the rear D-handle. It incorporates a mechanical cushion that keeps the handle independent from the body of the tool. The adjustable foregrip also has some flex which provides your hands with a little isolation from the percussive vibrations.

When it comes to ratings, DeWalt measures the vibration at 6 3/10 M/S².

Isolated handle

3 + 1 Modes

The standard three modes of operation allow you to switch between drilling only, rotary hammer, and hammer only functions.

There’s no official angle adjust mode on the switch, but we were able to rotate bits with the dial indicator pointing down and lock them in when switching over to any of the other three modes.

DeWalt DCH416 SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer Design Notes

Size And Weight

The DeWalt 60V Flexvolt rotary hammer sits in the middle of the pack between models such as DeWalt’s 12V Max Xtreme and their big 2-inch SDS-Max. It weighs 9.06 pounds as a bare tool and jumps to 12.25 pounds when using a 3.0/9.0Ah FlexVolt battery.

It’s 20 inches from tip to tail and stands 10 inches tall so it fits comfortably in the mid-size category.

DeWalt DCH416 60V Max FlexVolt 1 1/4-Inch SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer

Size and weight are two of the main reasons this rotary hammer exists. It’s 3 pounds lighter than the next closest FlexVolt model and that makes a huge difference.

Ergonomics

In terms of the physical design’s ergonomics, I’m not sure how much more I can ask for. The vibration and kickback controls work the way they should so we didn’t feel like we have to fight the tool as much to get the work done.

DeWalt DCH416 60V Max FlexVolt 1 1/4-Inch SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer

The rear handle is very comfortable and matches well with the natural contours of my hands—a common theme among DeWalt tools.

The foregrip rotates 360° around the chuck, although you need to be mindful of the depth rod’s position when you’re using it.

Overall, this rotary hammer is very easy to maneuver and control, making it a great “all-day” option for Pros.

Depth Rod

When you need to control your drilling depth, there’s a tool-free adjustable depth rod integrated into the foregrip. The spring-loaded depth adjustment button eliminates any of the loosening issues that knob-based systems can have.

Milwaukee Concrete Pencil Vibrator Offers No Setup and Less Hassle

Joining the existing MX FUEL Backpack Concrete Vibrator in the Milwaukee line of mason’s tools, the M18 FUEL Concrete Pencil Vibrator offers a compact, handheld solution to concrete consolidation. This tool looks especially helpful when working in tighter spaces where a backpack might prove too bulky.

What’s the Big Deal?

The new pencil vibrator generates up to a 1.8 peak HP which Milwaukee claims delivers up to three times more power than comparable cordless products. That means they plan to take on the Makita 18V XRV02 and the DeWalt DCE531 among others.

The brushless motor on both the 4-ft (2910) and the 8-ft (2911) delivers continuous maximum power with 12,500 VPM. This Pencil Vibrator uses a 1″ square head and lets users consolidate up to 20 cubic yards of concrete per charge when using a High Output 6Ah battery pack. That equates to a 6-inch slab roughly 30 x 35 feet in size…or ten light pole bases.

Other Features

  • Square head design delivers greater amplitude than round heads
  • Press fitted head and shaft is one unit integrated with the motor

Milwaukee Vibratory Screed Smooths Out Concrete Work

Milwaukee Tool announced a new product that should bring some more mobility to concrete pouring and finishing tasks. The Milwaukee MX FUEL Vibratory Screed expands the company’s already-impressive MX FUEL line of equipment with a concrete tool that the brand claims will bring consistent starts and more reliable pours with no gas headaches or maintenance.

What’s the Big Deal?

When you level concrete, you have to make sure the slab is perfectly flat and properly graded. That’s where the Milwaukee MX FUEL Vibratory Screed comes in. It has enough power to pull a 16-foot bar and consolidate up to six inches of concrete. Plus, the compact CP203 MX FUEL battery nets you two hours of run-time per charge at partial throttle when using a 12-foot bar. That equates to roughly 10,000 square feet of concrete.

What we like about this product is that it provides a concrete leveling solution that removes the need for a gas-powered screed in certain situations. We can only imagine this marks just the beginning of Milwaukee Tool’s foray into battery-powered concrete finishing equipment solutions.

The Milwaukee Vibratory Screed features a push-button start—another advantage over gas—and requires no regular maintenance. Any tool that produces less noise, eliminates mixing gas and oil, and has zero emissions gets the nod in our book. While you can certainly use this tool outdoors, this tool definitely makes the workplace safer when working inside.

Constructed from magnesium, the screed is both rigid and lightweight. The double triangle design helps transmit consistent vibrations across the entire length of the bar. Utilizing a clamp design, Milwaukee’s Screed Bar allows users to quickly attach the bar at any point on the machine. Milwaukee also designed the MX FUEL Vibratory Screed so that it can run two motors on a single long bar for increased mobility. You can currently use any of seven screed bars ranging from 4- to 16-feet in length—and each of those is available separately.

Finally, Milwaukee integrated ONE-KEY technology into this system so you can track, manage, and secure the screed by locking it remotely if it’s ever lost or stolen.

Other Features

  • Compatible with MBW Screeds
  • Clamp design for easy bar attachment and removal
  • Includes two MX FUEL CP203 battery packs

Pricing and Availability

Milwaukee is planning to ship the MX FUEL screed in Q1 of 2022. Pricing is $2499 for the kit with two compact CP203 batteries. Screed bars are sold separately and we’ll add pricing on those when we get it.

DeWalt 12V Rotary Hammer Makes A Strong Case For Compact Tools

Many Pros tend to make a beeline right to the 18V/20V Max models when looking for new power tools. However, 12V tools can do a lot of the same work and they’re getting even more capable with today’s technology. The DeWalt 12V Max Xtreme Rotary Hammer is out to prove a point about just how much you can do on a more compact platform.

DeWalt Xtreme 12V Max Rotary Hammer Performance

We took to the shop to get a feel for this rotary hammer while drilling a series of holes in our 4000 PSI concrete test block. The combination of the two handles made it easy to control while drilling with a 3/8-inch masonry bit. This model delivers up to 910 RPM with 4280 BPM and 1.1 Joules of impact energy (0.81 ft-lbs).

You’ll see the DeWalt DCH072 hit its peak performance with SDS-Plus bits between 5/32 and 3/8 inches, making it a great option for lighter duty work. It’s rated to a maximum of 9/16-inch bits if you need to go a bit bigger.

When you find yourself needing a little more muscle on the job site, consider the DeWalt 20V Max DCH273 which offers a bump in both capacity and power.

Pro Tip: Why not just use a hammer drill? Rotary hammers have higher impact power and stronger builds. Check out more on the differences in this article.

Table 1 Compliance

When it comes to OSHA Table 1 compliance, combine this rotary hammer with the DWH200D dust shroud to collect concrete dust. It’s DeWalt’s universal dust extraction kit that works on just about every corded and cordless DeWalt rotary hammer.

For the kind of work we expect to do with this particular model, the DWH161 is an ideal pairing to actively vacuum the dust, even when you’re working at height.

DeWalt Xtreme 12V Max Rotary Hammer Design Notes

Size and Weight

The biggest deal surrounding this cordless rotary hammer is how incredibly compact it is. It’s small in stature, standing 8 inches tall and measuring a little under 10.5 inches long.

On top of that, it weighs just 4.25 pounds with a 3.0Ah battery.

Even compared to other cordless 9/16-inch hammers, this is as compact and lightweight as it gets. With these figures, tight spaces and overhead work become much easier. For electrical, HVAC, and other trades that primarily use smaller concrete fasteners, it’s a great fit.

Mode Selection

A 2-position knob on the side lets you alternate between hammer drill mode and rotary drilling mode. Unlike some other high-powered rotary hammers, DeWalt’s 12V rotary hammer doesn’t have a dedicated chipping mode for use with SDS Plus chisel bits. That’s not a slight against this tool, it’s simply not designed for chipping.

Ergonomics

DeWalt’s handle designs are usually pretty favorable, and this one is no different. With rotary hammers in general, a comfortable grip is important especially considering the amount of pressure you’ll apply during use.

The side handle can rotate into 12 positions around the chuck and locks securely in place on a series of molded stops, similar to the teeth on a cog. This design virtually eliminates any grip movement while you’re working.

The main handle has the foundation of DeWalt’s drill and driver designs with comfortable contours and a generous serving of comfortable overmold.

Depth Rod

To adjust the depth rod, you need to loosen the handle which releases the rod at the same time. We prefer a separate release. It’s not a big deal, but something you should know about before you buy it.

If you’re planning to add the universal dust extractor, its depth rod has a push-button release.

Additional Features

  • Variable Speed Trigger
  • Integrated LED Light

DeWalt Xtreme 12V Max Rotary Hammer Price

This DeWalt 12V rotary hammer is available for $299 kitted with two 3.0Ah batteries, a charger, and a soft carrying case. It’s also available as a bare tool for $179. It carries DeWalt’s standard 3-year limited warranty with a 1-year service agreement and 90-day money-back guarantee.

The Bottom Line

If you’re on the hunt for a lightweight, compact rotary hammer to handle your smaller concrete fastening jobs, the DeWalt Xtreme 12V Max rotary hammer is for you. While its 12V power source limits its runtime compared to 18V/20V Max models, it’s a great solution for overhead or tight space work with impressive performance you might not expect on a 12V platform.

At the 2020 World of Concrete, we saw something that really caught our eye. Red Art Technologies had created a programmable concrete CNC Pro machine that could quickly and efficiently create graphics, custom logos, and text in a multitude of materials. It was a show-stopper, and it didn’t take long for us to see the potential of such a tool. In fact, we included it in our Top 10 Tools of World of Concrete video for the show.

Fast forward a year or so and we partnered with Red Art to explain more about how both this product and process works. But first, it helps to understand a little bit more about the company behind this innovative concrete CNC machine.

Read our article on the Top 10 Best Tools at World of Concrete.

Red Art Technologies Invents a Concrete CNC Machine

RedArt Technologies was created by Henry Ashworth of Bountiful, Utah. After a year of research and development, Henry patented the world’s first truly portable CNC engraving machine—the Red Art CNC Pro. It could customize surfaces with any typeface, logo, pattern, graphic, or image you could imagine—largely because the system removed the engraving deck. The target market was businesses, entrepreneurs—even non-profit organizations.

The Red Art Concrete CNC Machine links to the software on a laptop which transforms virtually any image from the computer into a precise engraving on any desired surface. Specifically, the CNC Pro utilizes standard G codes to operate and Vcarve serves as the principal vector design software. Using Vcarve also enables CNC Pro operators to engrave wood, HDPE, aluminum, and other soft metals.

The product—in addition to having a revolutionary design, boasts durability, versatility, and portability. The design has remained the same milled aluminum frame for the past 6 years. Red Art has made some improvements like using beefier step motors which now allow the machine to engrave vertically onto walls. These motors also allow engravings to get down to .006-inches of precision. The Red Art CNC Pro is designed to advertise, commemorate, brand, or customize any sign, landmark, bridge, walkway, or building. Basically…if you can imagine it, this thing can help you make your mark.

Cool Concrete CNC Machine Engraving Projects

Some of the most impressive are these larger engravings that require much more space than you find within the confines of the CNC Pro. This concrete CNC machine accomplishes this via a process called “tiling”. Tiling is where you pick up the Machine and position it relative to the adjacent tile or engraving area. Red Art has training videos that take owners through this entire process.

Carving a Periodic Table of Elements

The largest tiled job we’ve seen this system tackle was performed by an owner out of Baton Rouge, LA. He engraved a large Periodic Table of Elements into the Science Plaza at the Episcopal School of Baton Rouge. The project took around 5 days to complete.

Baton Rouge LA table elements made with a concrete CNC Pro machine

Each of the Elements was sponsored. As the school auctioned off each element to donors, it engraved their names alongside their element.

Engraving Poems in Walkways and Fundraising Opportunities

Another cool project happened when the city of Las Vegas contacted Red Art. They wanted them to use the CNC Pro concrete engraving machine to help improve the historic Artistic District by engraving poems into area walkways.

Vegas poems walkway

So how else do we see the SNS Pro being used? Many individuals want their favorite team engraved onto their driveway, garage, pool deck, or shop. Businesses tend to make requests for street signage or to have their logo engraved onto the lobby or in recreational areas. Educational institutions and nonprofits often utilize engraving services for fundraising such as engraving donor names.

The Red Art CNC Pro Concrete Engraving Process

No matter the application, the design process for creating custom engraved artwork is pretty straightforward. The turnaround time from when a customer walks into a CNC Pro shop and when they get to take home or have a design engraved is anywhere from a few minutes to 24 hours. The process, if you want to call it that, entails a customer bringing in a photo, text, or design they want engraved. With Vcarve, you can trace any logo, text, or design and send it to the machine for engraving. The software accepts virtually every image or vector format including JPEG, PNG, Illustrator, EPS, and CAD. The CNC Pro operator drafts a design and gets the customer to sign off on it. Lastly, they engrave the design and optionally add pigment or epoxy to make it pop.

Creating a Business Model

But how would you create a business around the CNC Pro? Well, in this case, the project not only raised money for the school but also brought in a secure source of income for years to come. It ended up being one of the most exciting jobs Red Art has ever seen completed with the CNC Pro—and it also did something really great for the community.

Red Art ships the CNC Pro in a waterproof, high-density plastic case secured in customized foam lining. It makes it a very transportable CNC solution that can handle going on location and making it safely back to the shop. And that’s the point—while you can use this system in your workshop—it’s designed to go boldly where no CNC machine has gone before…to coin a phrase.

So here’s where it gets interesting, Red Art Technologies makes it so that you don’t have to have any CNC knowledge to buy and use this concrete engraving machine. The reason is that they include in-depth training materials with every CNC Pro. Red Art even offers one-on-one training with every CNC Pro purchase. While most owners are ready to go with only the training videos, if you need more, the company provides 24/7 support with an actual real-live CNC Pro engineer.

Red Art concrete CNC Pro machine police engraving

For some, that makes this a business investment opportunity. That’s true whether the CNC engraving machine becomes your main source of income and opportunity or it supplements the concrete work you already do for your clients.

Four Compelling Aspects of Owning a Red Art CNC Pro

Red Art gives four reasons why you might want to add the CNC Pro to your professional tool arsenal. First, it lets you generate long-term income on existing surfaces. That comes from the potential to market your services to facilities and organizations interested in commemorating donors or contributors. Colleges, businesses, municipalities, private industries—the possibilities seem endless.

class of 2021 memorial

Second, you could really make an impact in your community. Imagine beautifying a downtown art district or commemorating fallen heroes at a central park or memorial. From schools to community centers, you could literally make a lasting impression in the cities where you work and live.

The third reason has to do with the nature of the business a concrete CNC machine generates. This market is largely untapped—so you have the potential to offer a valuable and unique service. With no deck, the CNC Pro travels wherever you want it and engraves on both horizontal and vertical surfaces for nearly endless applications. Currently, Red Art Technologies says less than 200 CNC Pro owners exist worldwide. Between them, they’ve logged over 30,000 hours netting over $10,000,000 in sales.

multicolor concrete artwork

The fourth reason? Well, that goes back to where we started. This CNC engraving machine and technology are simply cool. It’s rare that a tool contains an entire business model—but this one does. Aside from concrete, the right bits and techniques also give you the potential to engrave wood, stone, tile, brick, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and even glass. On top of that, it’s built to last, with components milled from solid aluminum and backed with a 2-year warranty and support. Add to that the self-paced training program and owners group, and you’ve got something you can build on for years to come.

Final Thoughts

CNC machines used to take up entire warehouses and airport hangers. Now you can carry one in the back of your pickup. Is the Red Art Technologies CNC Pro Concrete Engraving Machine right for your business? Hit the link in the description below and find out. You might be surprised at what you can accomplish with this tool. At the very least you can leave your mark in your community. You see what I did there?
